|Reviews for Stolen Smile|
| InSilva chapter 32 . 2/4
So much loneliness. Sigh. The need to keep on the run, keep them chasing him and that would be enough but he's also got to raise the cash they're after and still there's the worry about Tess and the extended worry about Danny and the very real thought that he could die and neither of them would really know why. Nose is wrinkling at the cheap motel and the stained nylon sheets. Can see it. All the plate spinning and living day to day and the weariness and really, really he could do with a friendly face and someone else doing the thinking.
Which is why he responds to Casey. Even though I am certain he wouldn't have enjoyed the encounter because feel certain Casey is all about his own needs rather than pleasing a partner. And Rusty knows it but doesn't care. Sigh again. And because he's gotten Casey involved, he has to save him. Feel Amos is very lucky there's the distraction of a shotgun because that feels like that's all that saves him from being killed. No inner voice to talk Rusty down.
And with death so much in the air, am pleased and unsurprised that he spoke to Frank. See "Tell Him" for details. And the Bulgari Job and Isabel and Rome and Rusty won't be involved with any of it. More unhelpful sighing.
Very glad that this is six months earlier and that I am lazy reviewer. Huh. You know what I mean. ;)

First off: HA! Like I'll believe you when you estimate the chapters left. No, my friend... I'll let myself be surprised.
And poor Danny. What a situation to be in. Trying to bury the jealousy and the longing, because he knows that's not what he should be focusing on, because he knows the love and the care and the *safe* are way more important, more prominent. But it's not so easy to manage feelings, is it?
But they are together. And they have a plan. And yes, it's risky, and yes Banks is dangerous, but the three of them together? Darn if it doesn't give me hope.
Thanks for the update.

Feel the drama! Wow, the relationship dynamics in this one have gotten complicated. But, fortunately, at the heart of it, they all just want to protect each other, so everything else will work out eventually, right? I'm glad that Danny and Tess made it clear that Rusty staying behind was absolutely not an option. I think, really, once they explain the situation, the guys will be willing to help.
I gotta say, though, pulling Willy Bank into it was a twist I didn't expect. I am intrigued.
I was super slow reading this one, sorry about that. The notification disappeared to the nether regions of my email inbox, haha.

Oh, hey, we caught up with the present. That's kind of fun. And Rusty made it! I have to say, creating a fake burned corpse of a business associate (friend?) would be seriously disturbing, so kudos to Roman for doing it and doing it well.
Also, I kind of love Frank in this story. He's never been my favorite, but he is really coming through for Rusty here, and I can't help but approve. It's pretty great.

Ugh, man, Rusty's depression is really hard to read. It's clear that he's floundering, even while he keeps handling everything that comes at him fairly well. I'm glad that he could talk to Frank, even if he didn't actually tell him anything real because he just needed a connection to an actual person. It's what he was looking for with Casey, but Casey was the wrong person to try with. Especially when he has all those people looking to talk to him. I understand why he's distancing himself, but that's honestly a bad idea.

Awww. Sorry, that was a reaction to the ending. But I did love the chapter, and how thorough Rusty was, making sure he cut off loose ends. But I also caught how very tired he was, how alone, despairing. Poor thing.
And then Danny walks in. Everything is always better when there's Danny, isn't it? Like he belonged. Perfect.

Oh, man, poor Rus can't catch a break, can he?
I did like the action in this one. It was very frantic, but understandable.
I also like that the feeling of tiredness, bleakness, despair run through the whole chapter. But am also glad he picked up Frank's call. Yes, Rusty, there is a life out there.
Wonder how he get out of this whole thing.

Having very productive morning. ;)
Ah, Rusty. So quick thinking and so clever at misdirection and so determined to protect and so full of self-sacrifice. Noble *idiot*. And Bloody Amos does not sound like a nice person to be on the wrong side of even before he shows how he earned his name.
Ow, ow, ow for the torture and for Rusty having to manage the pain enough to play the part of Vinnie, to convince Amos and co that Tess knows nothing, to get them to focus on him. And sighing for the escape and the pursuit and what it means: "They had to chase him. They couldn't catch him." Leading them after him on a merry dance across country, never stopping while he makes the money so that they'll stop.
And shivering for the "He could kill them." For him thinking about how easy it would be to carry out and how simple a solution it would be and I'm thinking of Havana verse and of swirl and Ghosts if it comes to that. Also Golden Opportunity, I suppose. Because he could and he'd be effective and efficient and deadly.
Final line is sad and sweet and painful as anything. He's so lonely and that's of course what we've seen in this fic. Sigh.

Oh, Rusty. I don't even know what to say about this. He's so isolated right now, out of necessity, but still. And drowning in guilt, understandably, but with no one to help him carry it. I did love the bit at the end where he tried to figure out what to do. Because Danny and Rusty have neve really been about easy. They're all about right (for a given con artist value of right) and as a side note, about having as much fun as possible. And murder is neither of those things - right or fun.

Hurray for reconciliation! And also, for not brushing things under the carpet and acting like there aren't a lot of emotions going on. There are things that need to happen right now, and they can wait to deal with the emotional difficulties until after everyone is physically safe. Good job, everybody.
I thought you handled Danny's reaction really well. He still loves Rusty, and he understands his actions and he can appreciate his helping Tess, but he can still be angry about how some of it went down. And Rusty accepts that Danny's angry, but doesn't really regret anything he did because Tess's safety was more important. Everybody's so emotionally mature! It's great.
| light at last chapter 29 . 5/7/2013
Yay, go Tess! This is absolutely perfect. Tess may not have the strength to stand up for herself, but she has the strength to defend Rusty. I think that happens with a lot of people, like mothers who won't leave their abusive husbands until he starts hitting the kids. Tess has finally chosen a side, and now she's got sneaky plots. This seems more like the Tess we see in Ocean's Twelve, who jumped in on Danny and Rusty's con and impersonated Julia Roberts in the face of Bruce Willis - which takes some moxie. I'm glad she's finding her way back to the Tess we love.
| Maia2 chapter 31 . 5/5/2013
Awww, poor, poor Rusty... He's always so darn quick on his feet. Too bad that quickness always leads to him getting hurt! How sad is it that while he's getting hurt what he is thinking is of what Danny and Tess would think, feel, if they knew...
Thanks for sharing.

I knew I liked where this was going. Rusty and Danny being honest with each other: that's what we were all waiting for, I think. This reminds me of Django (okay everything reminds me of Django since I've watched it for a second time) , but you know... The moment when you think they're finally out and free and then gigantic unforeseen shit happens. I feel we're at that point right now?
