Reviews for Mass Effect 2 AU: Lanius
Guest chapter 11 . 12/25/2021
This sudden gameover will severely piss players off. It's a big fuck you to them, especially after all the other plot armored narrow escapes. And the vaccine thing sounds way too fake as Shep points out, player has no reason whatsoever to trust this offer.

It might be neat to have a midgame twist with Cerberus becoming neutral but you can't have spammed Cerb enemies every five seconds or throw in something completely different from the left field. That's tricolor space magic level of writing. What you can do is to NOT spam your miniboss squad and their cutscene powers all game, have them beat Shep to IFF, then approach for a deal after a few more missions. If player refuses, Collectors grab the crew when the time comes (or whatever you planned for forcing the final rush). If player accepts, Cerbies help and crew isn't captured (or whatever and player can do all the side missions before starting endgame). You can't take such a big choice out of players' hands with surprise gameovers.

Having extra strong plot armor is what makes the Cereal Killer so laughable. Don't make the same mistake with your own super special rival character.
Guest chapter 8 . 12/24/2021
You're straying your miniboss squad into Cereal Killer territory with all these cutscene escapes, author. Harby spent the entire game shittalking Shep and getting its ass kicked repeatedly, so it's mocked as a stalking fanboy whereas Sovereign deigned to speak once and then appeared as the big finale setpiece, so nobody disses Sovereign. Familiarity bred contempt and the same fate would await your terrible trio if you spam cutscene powers this much.

Your ideas about mission themes are good, they just need to be executed without plot armors.
Guest chapter 7 . 12/24/2021
The miniboss squad appearing in every mission and getting away in a cutscene would get ludicrous, author.

Your ideas about Anderson and enemy notShep are objectively good (instead of just better than Cereal Killer, since an evil teletubby with a goatee would've been better than Cereal Killer).

Your proposed plot is miles better than the filler trash that passed for main plot in ME2. But a hypothetical ME2 where Shep is solving big galactic problems to prepare for Reapers (fixing genophage, peace with geth, batarians as a whole, etc) would result in a much better paced trilogy for when Reapers arrive at the BIG CLIMAX SEQUENCE of the last game (instead of right at the start and immediately facerolling everybody, followed by Shep fucking around for goddamn months while Reapers patiently wait for the literal deus ex machina that will defeat them be built). You already defeat a proper Reaper at the end of ME1, dealing with their remote controlled toys for a sequel is a serious letdown, Cerberus or not.
ME2 should have an air of anxiety as it's unknown when exactly Reapers will arrive that culminates in finding the answer to that, followed by a frantic fast paced ME3 where we must hurry with whatever DeM we discovered at the finale of ME2 before they arrive next week! Which will of course fail so there'll be a big epic space battle thing with Reapers and the united forces of galaxy before Shep personally pulls a victory out of his ass somehow. End it all with a party at the Citadel with all the surviving npcs and bob's your uncle.

Also let people play the whole game with Legion. There's no damn reason for them to be in a time gated level, meet with Legion instead of Tali at the start, being geth is a much better excuse to have seen and not be bothered by mosquito swarms. Legion is obviously the best squaddie after Mordin, whom you were wise enough to make the starter companion (well done with that, author). Tali can track Shep and join up wherever.

Speaking of starter squad, why Kasumi? She's cool and all but why not Liara or Tali? Mordin is explained by being the best but Kasumi doesn't have any interesting theme or plot reasons to be there from the start. Even Joker with a remote controlled mech or something would've made a more interesting starter companion.

Dunno why I bother commenting on such ancient stories, really.
Guest chapter 5 . 12/24/2021
So Miniboss3 would've been the hero background if playerShep was Butcher of Torfan? Neat idea actually. Would be even neater if the unmasked model was the other gender standard Shep.

Also Jacob is too damn lame to have a cooler villainous version. Should've replaced him with Wesley Snipes from Demolition Man or something. But anything would've been better than Jacob, even the sexbot from ME3.

Thank you for writing Lanius! Together with Renegade Reinterpretations, I think you’ve written the best and most realistic Mass Effect fanfics of all.
If you ever write another ME fic, you’ll have an eager reader here.
Volksbrot chapter 35 . 2/4/2021
Definitely an interesting read. I prefer Renegade Reinterpretations, but for the sake of changing things and making them interesting, this was excellent.
Guest chapter 11 . 3/16/2020
Butcher? Lmao, what a Mary Sue trash heap. He should be sodomized by big black batons.
dinadan256 chapter 35 . 7/18/2016
Interesting musings and kudos for a well thought out plot line. I think, however, that this story line would make for a poor 'Mass Effect' game. It reads more like a Sci-Fi version of Spec-Ops: The Line. And even that might not work out how you envision it. What works in a story may not work in a game.

Still, I really like this AU for its moral ambiguity.
Guest chapter 25 . 1/31/2015
So Chapter 25 and 24 are like alternate scenarios where you pick the cure first or fight Cereberus first? Would like some clarification. Sadly there isn't one about kicking the collectors. Hm.

Very well done though!

i never played the cannon dlc but i like you youve woven them into one cohesive arc

as for the butchers fate, hes going to be revived by miranda in an AU lasarus project
thepkrmgc chapter 27 . 7/15/2014
with a shepard unafiliated from cerberus the choice to save or destroy the collector base becomes a lot more interesting
thepkrmgc chapter 26 . 7/15/2014
im kind of disapointed that you didnt cover the "two teams" thing with the specialization stuff but its otherwise a decent resolution to the omega plotline
thepkrmgc chapter 25 . 7/15/2014
while this could be better developed, its got a solid foundation that makes you think about what more could be done with it
thepkrmgc chapter 24 . 7/15/2014
nice player punch, and its good to know that you can save cerberus for last and still fight them, im curious about how the allied assistance thing would work out
thepkrmgc chapter 23 . 7/15/2014
while im curious as to how the specialist thing will work, if it has plot impact beyond who lives and who dies then its capitol, the only thing that i would suggest is either making an attack on cerberus more morally ambiguous or by having political consequences for collaborating with them (which could be considered treason by the council)
