The whole 'pictures can capture the soul' thing reminds me about the old superstitions about cameras/photographs.
I was gonna be all 'aww, Frithuswith and Calimab, cute!' but her assessment here is perfectly logical.

Yay for Erchirion vocalizing annoyance at Eomer's persistent whining (prejudice) about Winfrid's height!
The letters from Eowyn and Faramir are a good touch, too. We know that Eomer and Eowyn have a great relationship, but her writing to him is so... direct and abrupt that it really indicates how they're both leading different lives. Eomer's ignorance about Theodred, while Eowyn knew because she was in Edoras. There's something about how you portray these characters that's a nice and subtle way of highlighting their different experiences through their gender roles. Eomer being surprised at Faramir knowing (but then again, Faramir was very close to Boromir and also very observant) and then reflecting on it... I somehow feel that your Eomer is maturing even more.
Was eager to find out what kind of picture Calimab drew and your description did not disappoint! It's wonderful and brilliant and I'm glad that Frithuswish likes it :)

I really like your Lothiriel! She's intelligent (observant) and yet is naive in a way that fits the context of her time and environment. The eloquence of her letters, and the way she reveals more about herself is very fitting. She's reasonable and mature, especially when it comes to matters of state (as she has been trained), but her letters also reveal her youth/innocence (despite growing up with those brothers...)
And regarding the oranges and the end... hah, men ;)

So... I have been lurking for a while (and what I mean by that is I have read "Through Shadows" and "Choppy Waters") and now I feel compelled (or motivated by guilt) to write a review. After being absent from the world of fanfic for a couple of years, I stumbled on "Through Shadows" and the rest of your fics and logged in to my extremely old account (seriously, the last time I logged in was probably 8 years ago) just to review! First off - your writing is excellent and runs very smoothly. Each chapter is a good length yet concise, where each sentence contributes to the overall picture (without being verbose). Although there was a moment where I felt that there was an almost formulaic and deliberate introduction of Rohirric customs (or Rohirric/Gondorean differences), the pacing has reached a point where I just really enjoy the detail you add to Rohan. I'm actually surprised at how much I'm appreciating this almost peaceful "daily life" portrayal of Eomer and the Rohirrim, which is a compliment to your (realistic) vision of this world.
I really like the different new characters that you keep introducing, the politics they bring, and the mixed relationships (Gondorean/Rohirrim) which is just so realistic in a post-war world (especially on the borders). The cultural differences and the reluctance to change (by the older generation) is again a nice touch - and the repeated discussions about roads and trade seems well thought out. Frithuswith's vulnerability and Master Calimab's stumbling over the picture is just... great. I've already read "Through Shadows" so I'm eager to see how much of Theodred's life is explored here. I love the endings to so many of your chapters!

The end does compensate for the torture of the waiting you put us through. :) I'm glad they got a early start on the six..
| Anon chapter 43 . 1/2
I truly like your Lothiriel. :)
| Anon chapter 42 . 1/2
That last sentence was cruel! :(
| Anon chapter 40 . 1/2
The last line is pure gold.
| Anon chapter 39 . 1/2
The soup sounds delicious.
| Anon chapter 38 . 1/2
Peacock? They can still have use though they are beautiful and vain. I'm glad the wedding is still on.
| Anon chapter 37 . 1/2
That was a wonderful letter. Thank God women are more practical than men.
| Anon chapter 36 . 1/2
This is killing me. People in love are stupid and you right realisticly, but I don't like the uncertainty one bit.
| Anon chapter 35 . 1/2
How can he be so stupid! I doubt at this point Lothiriel will any other children except Eomer's.
| Anon chapter 34 . 1/2
NO! I don't want him to break the engagement!
| Anon chapter 33 . 1/2
How cruel Saruman was. :( This part definitely fits with canon.
