LOL...i absolutely loved the whole "Master Bates" thing...I can't wait to see what happens next. I like the fact that Hadrian is opening up more, and showing his Slytherin side more. Can we see more of Lord Slytherin and Hadrian?
| Eoin chapter 1 . 8/31/2012
This gave me the chills (of the pleasurable kind). I commend you on your genius. Now, to the all important catch; will you let me use this idea in real life, may the situation ever arise? *PLEASESAYYESPLEASESAYYESPLEA SESAYYES* Keep up the amazing work! Oh! Do you know of any other fics with the setup similar to this? You know, back in time, AU, including characters not alive yet (or still), and OoC Harry? Anyway, thank you for all your hard work! I get the just know that I'll love reading this! And when I finally get around to creating an account, this is definitely going on my favorites!
| Dragonanzar chapter 11 . 8/30/2012
I warn you now that this is probably going to be a long review considering that for the last six weeks I’ve only had enough internet access to download updates, so this is a combination of everything I’ve wanted to say on your story so far.
Right, first things first, I love it! I must admit I was a little dubious at first: I picked this up on AO3 so the long list of characters was slightly off-putting as it reminded me of some absolutely awful crossovers I’ve come across. Then, I saw the bit in the Author’s note part which was a quote from a reader recommending someone to at least read the beginning, or some such statement. I thought ‘well, they’ve enjoyed it. Why not try?’ I did and I’m so glad I did! Hadrian’s revenge and continued outsmarting of his enemies was highly engaging and awe-provoking. I bet all your sorting hat quizzes come up with Slytherin! Maybe a bit of Gryffindor thrown in if you did actually do a similar scene in real life vilifying one of your professors, as you said. Slytherin is the last house I would ever be sorted in (this from about ten different quizzes) so I very much enjoy reading about these kind of cunning plots, but couldn’t actually create them myself.
There was one bit, however, that I really didn’t enjoy and that was when we got a look inside Dumbledore’s head. It wasn’t because of anything you did, but how his character has been constructed. His conduct and mindset enraged me on two levels: personal and professional. Professional because I’m currently training to be a teacher and so the thought that such an immoral, biased, blind, untrustworthy and completely unprofessional (I can’t think of enough negative adjectives to describe him with) person could become a teacher and headteacher is deeply offensive. Personal because surely, any right-minded, moral person who tries to help others would be righteously furious at Dumbledore’s misconduct. Of course, that’s no doubt the point. You’ve created a character whose many crimes would be against the moral code of the majority of people in the world. He is guilty of breaking the trust of others – the will – shady dealings with a young child – leaving Hadrian to mistreatment in the orphanage – theft from said child, use of the funds to create a good image for himself, rape of a minor – presumably when he was over the age of consent himself – and multiple overlooking of offences which would be worth a prison sentence. (I know he’s only a fictional character, but still…) In making Dumbledore – and the Potters – such contemptible figures, you make it so that when the fall and fall hard, no reader will be on their side. Instead, we will all be grinning vindictively at the screen and baying for more blood.
One question. Dumbledore is supposed to have gained his position through various manipulations, presumably from a position where he would be no more or less trusted than any other student. Surely that would mean that he would be practiced in both subtle and overt manipulations? If that is the case, then why are all his attempts to manipulate the situations that are arising now falling through? He seems unable to read what others are rather obviously feeling and is thereby unable to adjust. The only explanation I can see is that maybe he’s been in a position of power where he is the unquestioned paragon of the light and all things good that he’s lost his touch with finer adjustments to the situation. Unless, of course, he’s just going senile. Do you have another explanation?
Something else, less of a criticism and more of an observation. You seem to be tarring certain figures with a very heavy oil brush and letting others go free. What I mean is, for example, the elder Weasleys are all intelligent and powerful and essentially good because they are not actually the sons of Arthur, but a follower of Lord Slytherin. The younger two Weasleys are bad and stupid because they are the son and daughter of a squib caretaker who, presumably, follows Dumbledore. It seems a bit of overkill to make the distinction between the ‘good’ ‘Weasleys’ and the ‘bad’ ‘Weasleys’ by having them be of completely genetic stock. Why not just explain it away by having them all be born of Arthur and Molly, raised in the same environment, but exposed to different influences when they reach school (or innate goodness/badness wins out)? Unless, you’re perhaps going somewhere with the whole situation. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
I’m interested to see where you go with the Hadrian/Marvolo bit. I particularly hope Hadrian’s heritage from the founders comes up soon so that he’s on a bit more of an even keel with Lord Slytherin. Otherwise he’s a bit swamped. Then again, his fight against being swamped could be very interesting (like in ‘Death of Today’ by Epic Solemnity (or Dark Cyan Star: I can’t remember which penname it’s posted under)).
I noticed your comment about escaping the guilt complex of the Catholic church. Funny that I was actually having a conversation about the whole origins of the church with my mum earlier and we were discussing the way the Celtic church split away from the Roman Catholic church early on. The result was that there is a fundamental difference between the two traditions. The Catholic church seems to presuppose that humans are inherently bad and so need to be constantly working and going to church and praying etc just to become neutral, let alone good. The whole guilt complex resulted in the church being able to control everyone because if they were disobeyed, there was the threat of eternal damnation. Mum raised the point that the New Testament never actually mentions Hell in the way the Catholics would have us believe it exists. Somewhere it talks about a place where there will be darkness and gnashing of teeth (I think), but no fiery pits of damnation. Instead, the Celtic church puts forth the principle that we are beloved of God as we are, that all of creation is fundamentally good because it is all of God in some way or other. Because of that belief, there is no guilt. We follow God’s path because we trust in him and trust in his omniscience, omnipotence and omnibenevolence. Like a child with a loved parent, we try to obey him because we know we are loved and want to do what is right, rather than out of some fear of punishment or some desire to somehow ‘earn’ His love.
Ah, sorry if that seemed to be a bit forward or pushy. It was meant to only be a throwaway comment, but turned into something a bit more. I think I’ll leave it in though.
Last thing, because this review is really becoming much too long. It’s really been warming to find someone of your age and life experience writing online. Because neither of my parents are particularly keen on fantasy, I’ve always viewed it as somehow worth less than non-fiction or fiction grounded in reality. Fantasy has always been a slightly guilty pleasure of mine, a harkening back to my childhood more than something that as an adult I can enjoy. So, for just being in the fandom and writing a wonderful story, thank you.
I hope the troubles you’re currently having will start smoothing out a little. I can empathise with the migranes: I get them reasonably regularly myself. Not fun. I hope you won’t be offended if I say that I’m sending you my best wishes and my prayers.
I look forwards to the continuation of the story,

| NightAngel99 chapter 11 . 8/28/2012
Uhm, can I say that I love you and it be understood in the context that I mean it?
I absolutely love this fic and, believe this when I say that, I have passed over it many times. I don't normally enjoy stories that take so much leeway with the Harry Potter stories and as such never planned to read this fic. My sister actually told me a few of the points in the first three chapters and so I just had to read it.
I laughed so much that my 4 year old daughter began laughing with me and had no idea what she was laughing about. I cannot wait for your next update.
| White-Witch-Sakura chapter 11 . 8/28/2012
I love it, can't wait for the next chapter. This is one of the few VM/HP stories that I like.
| disneypenguin chapter 11 . 8/27/2012
I loved it. It is nice to see a story that is willing to mix elements from different AU's. I can't wait to see the next chapter. Hope the Potter's get what is coming to them.

| Nanashi-Blue chapter 1 . 8/26/2012
There is a Mr. in the front of that by-the-way.
Have patience, I'm old.
As for your migraines: Chamomile tea, Spearmint, Green w\Honey(oh yes, we loves the honey), try also lowering your salt intake as well as limiting you daily sugar intake.
don't take them out completely, just have either a diet soda or a low cal\low sodium power-aid instead.
Take my word for it! I'm currently ninety six and this (trolling the fanfic sites(great grandchildren, don't ya love 'em?)) is just about all I do all day.
| choirbandgeek chapter 1 . 8/25/2012
Wow that gives new meaning to a "revenge is a dish best served cold". That was pure evil, and I loved it! Keep up the good work, I look forward to reading more.
