Reading this has been such an amazing experience. I never imagined that I'd enjoy a fan fic so much. You took such a morbid concept and turned it into something so wholesome. I love your characterization of this version of Harry and the others. Everything that happens feels like it makes perfect sense given these version of the characters. Def one of, if not the, best fanfics I've ever read.

I don't know how you took such a dark concept and made it into something so wholesome. I really like your characterization of Harry and honestly, his life seems kind of better in a lot of ways than his cannon counterpart. I also really like how natural everything seemed. The way these versions of the character behave make a lot of sense. I really like that Harry is still as loyal as he was in the main story, while still being a lot more cautious and calculating (which makes sense given what he's been through). I also liked that Snape and Harry's more positive relationship wasn't just fanservice but instead made sense. It was little things like that kept me reading. Overall, great story, and I can't wait to read more.

I have known about fanfictions for a long time but I’ve never been a fan of them. I find that most of them are poorly written and I generally don’t find them to be that enjoyable. Because of this, I decided to look up what people considered to be the best fanfic of all time and I eventually stumbled upon a Harry Potter fanfic titled Fantastic Elves and Where to Find Them by evansentranced.
Fantastic Elves and Where to Find Them is an AU fanfic in which the Dursleys abandon a 6 year old Harry in the forest. Following this, Harry decides to live in the forest and mistakenly assumes that he is an elf. While the premise may seem very dark, the story itself is extremely humorous and rather wholesome. Harry’s character is very different from the main books and unlike most fanfics in the Harry Potter fanfic genre, the story really doesn’t have much in common with the cannon plot of the books. The events and villains of the books such as Quirrel, the Basilisk, and even Voldermort himself, are treated as an afterthought. The story is instead an excellent character study of a Harry that was abandoned at a young age and how he views the world as a result. Many characters are very different from their cannon counterparts and some aren’t even part of this story. For example, Harry’s closest friend is Draco and he has practically no interaction with Ron and Hermione. The biggest difference is Harry’s personality. As a result of being on his own from a young age, Harry is extremely cautious and untrusting. While he still possesses the same bravery that he had in the books, he is far more calculating and cunning. As a result, he ends up being placed in Slytherin rather than Gryfindor. However, this change feels very natural for this version of Harry and is just one of the many interesting risks that this fanfic takes.
While I’m still not a really big fan of fanfic stories, I’d highly recommend this one. The plot is very interesting, especially if you’re a fan of the books, it’s very well written, and the characterization of Harry is so unique and feels natural. It takes a rather morbid and dark premise and turns it into something very wholesome. Definitely a must read.
