I truly loved this when I read it in AO3. It's brilliant and evocative, and makes me feel sad and uplifted at the same time. The friendship between Esca and Cottia, their emotional bond, and their pride, are wonderfully expressed. Great story.
[I've read "The Eagle of the Ninth," of course, and also "The Lantern Bearers," but not "The Silver Branch." I should really make an effort to do so!]
