Wow! This story is SO amazing!
I wish it wasn't over :(
But I love it! Keep writing!

Interesting bit of work, to say the least.
Dean’s time hunting solo after the Apocalypse is one period of his life that I never considered until I found this story, and your exploration of it is excellent, beginning with a very dramatic opening scene and progressing from there to create avery interesting storyline.
The introduction of Noah made an interesting character, presenting us with a chilling vision of what the hunters we’re more familiar with could become if they didn’t have each other to serve as a human connection, and your exploration of his unusual nature was very well-handled, dropping us enough hints to realise that he’d not a conventional hunter without giving us any definite clues as to what he is instead until the time is right.
That said, the ‘Underworld’ fan in me definitely liked the final revelation; in a world with so many creatures inhabiting it, it’s almost tragic that we’ve seen so little information about how the different ‘races’ interact with each other, so it was fascinating to see how Noah and Luke’s conflict was exacerbated by their transformations, leading into a very dramatic and very bloody final confrontation as Dean witnesses an unpleasant example of what he and Sam could have become if circumstances had been less kind…
Plus, of course, Dean’s own thoughts were excellent; he might be harsh at times, but Dean’s major strength as a hunter has always been his resolve to save innocents over killing monsters if it’s a choice between one or the other, and it’s good to see him acknowledge the need to remain connected to avoid becoming someone who doesn’t care.
So… any chance of a sequel in the future?
Maybe you could do a case involving the Winchesters and Castiel having to team up with Noah and Lenore (I’d ask for Meg as well, but that might be pushing it); can you imagine the tension of having a vampire, a werewolf and an angel in the same place?
I don’t know whether it would result in the recipe for a bizarre supernatural sitcom or a straightforward high-stake threat, but it would definitely be fascinating either way…

This was such a terrific story, and I really appreciated how it was set during one of those terribly painful periods when Sam and Dean are separated. I was in knots over Dean's post-Hell torment, and how it made his encounters with the nosferatu worse. (They were unbelievably horrifying, by the way, your descriptions leaving me looking over my shoulder and turning on the lights.) Noah is a wonderful character and I wish he was really on the show. I like Benny a lot, but Noah's back story has got WAY more potential for angst that aligns with the Winchesters'. The whole parallel with his brother, Luke, going dark, themes of anger, hate, loss, forgiveness... confronting Dean as he struggles with the same... Add on top that Noah's got his own (werewolf) problem... A very engaging mixture of elements! But what got to me most throughout was your description of Dean struggling with having let Sam go, and if it was the right thing, and what to do next. You wove the events of the show in perfectly, including the horror of Lucifer showing up to let Sam know he was his 'one true vessel.' I was weak with relief by the time you reunited the brothers. Awesome job. :)
| Freya922 chapter 5 . 7/15/2013
Dean's descent into the vampire 'meat locker' was described so well, I was shuddering with horror. Jeez! What really killed me, though, was Dean's continuing guilt regarding Hell, his sense of shame and just plain badness, and his belief he deserves to suffer...as if he hasn't suffered enough. It's so unfair that someone so heroic and loving (when it comes to family) ends up feeling so worthless. Sob.

I don't usually review multi-chapter fics until the very end, but I just had to say something sooner in this case. I am completely hooked by this story! It is fascinating to follow Dean through a time when he is in such devastation and without his brother. Even though I love stories where the brothers are in harmony, I think it's even more challenging to capture the complexities when their relationship is shattered and they're not sure how to find their way back to each other. You have done a beautiful job of illustrating Dean living through the utter loneliness of hitting the road without Sam while coping with the aftermath of Hell and the prospect of the Apocalypse.
I also really admire the way you turn a phrase. I was especially struck by this one:
"Dean pressed his lips close. There was a reason he kept stuff inside where no one else could see it. When he let even a little of it out, the mass oozed, slipping through the cracks of his grasp like mercury, following paths he couldn't anticipate." What a great metaphor!
Anyway - off to read more. :)

I'm Gina. I'm a bit of a fanfic snob, having been online since the late '90's and read lots of stuff. I don't like poorly-written, poorly-betaed junk full of basic spelling and grammatical errors. That said, I LOVE YOUR WRITING! I stumbled onto the Winchester brothers in 2010 while recuperating from a broken back. I was reading 'Laramie' fanfic if you can believe it, and Jess and Slim, Dean and Sam happened to meet up. Being also and old S&H fan, I immediately 'got' the brothers and the show. Thank you for writing better stuff than most. Wish the show would hire you! eg. Okay, blah, blah. I should say more about your excellent pacing, OC, how you portray Dean as Jensen does better than any writer I've seen yet, the awesome h/c which I crave. Your stories are so perfectly balanced with plot, action, pain, healing and dialogue. Amazing job! Please forgive that I've been reading and rec'ing your stuff for years but have never reviewed. You do a wonderful job and do our boys proud.

Such a great story. I love re-reading this one over and over.
I wish you would do another Dean and Noah story. Great combination.
| missmyshow chapter 10 . 5/15/2013
If only the show runners/writers understood the boys as you do! If only the interactions between Benny and Sam could have played like this. If only, if only. But, what we DO have is writers like you, who give us what the show has been lacking. I never thought I would like a story that focused on Dean without Sam, but I very much did. Thank you.

Apologies for how short this review is going to be. I've been reading mostly in the mornings before I go to work, so I scribbled down some notes but not a huge amount :)
Night of the Hunter is the perfect theme song to this story, I love the song
I love the beginning in the cave, very creepy atmosphere
"Okay, take a breath before you choke to death," Bobby ordered. "He just…took off?" - hee, I love Bobby
I wasn't expecting Noah to be a werewolf, I was expecting some sort of vampire-type creature, or a half vampire. I loved his character, I liked the chapters from his point of view and I loved him and Dean working together, showing how similar they are.
Thank you for another great story :)
| G chapter 10 . 4/4/2013
Loved it, admired it felt it! This was so much more than a usual ff story with depth of character you don 't often see. I did not think that I would enjoy a story so much with out " the boys" together, but I sure did, I have a sneaking suspection that I would not have felt quite the same had the main protagonist not been Dean. Sister, you write a complete, complex Dean. I will not beg for more, but simply say Thank you

I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed this. I really enjoyed Noah and the way you portrayed his relationship with Dean. I'll look forward to reading the next story with him.
Also, interesting reading Sam's reaction to Noah in light of this season's reaction to Benny. You must be psychic. :) Too bad he wasn't as reasonable on the show as he was here.
| Jester's Tear82 chapter 10 . 3/1/2013
Hey G! This review is SOOO long overdue.. as I finished reading this wonderful tale some time ago. But with RL taking over most of my time (don't you hate when it does that?) I somehow forgot to tell you how much I've enjoyed the ride. & yes, I've had my doubts about reading an almost Sam-less story at first, but you've managed to spin such a good, thrilling story it kept me entertained - also you didn't forget Sam completely, he was always on Dean's mind even when not physically present. The whole ancient vampire versus werewolf brother theme was well played too - especially in those moments of comparison to our own brothers. I actually have a song for the Nosferatu & for Luke:
You've made me care for Noah & I would definitely like to read more about him in the future.. & of course how can one not compare his relationship with Dean to canon Benny? Noah despite being a werewolf was very human & vulnerable, & I loved seeing him & Dean develop a strong friendship & an unique trust.
There are so many good sentences I want to quote back to you, like:
"And something inside of Dean had shifted since meeting Noah…a scarring over of a wound that had been so raw it had been bleeding out for months. The fact that Noah was walking away from them - and not in a grave with a silver bullet through his heart - gave Dean a kernel of faith that the world wasn't all tunnel. There was light." Such a defining moment for Dean I think, witnessing Noah's survival & knowing he did manage to save someone.
In the end though? It all comes back to this (because I'm a sucker for Sam appreciating Dean):
"Dean smiled weakly. "You're a good brother, Sammy."
"So are you, Dean," Sam replied sincerely.
*rubs heart* He really is.
This was written before season 8 & now we're at the point where Sam wants to show the light DOES exist to Dean, so all the pieces fit so perfectly (it's like you're a mind reader ;) I'm currently enjoying your SOA fic (slow.. slow reader I know!), then onward to your 8.14 SPN tag.. As long as you keep writing, I'll keep reading because your style captures me every time. Thanks as always!

I'm collecting clues... Noah's fight scene was great. I'm interested to know how he dealt with the injuries he got, as well as his hypersensitivity and how he calls Dean "kid". Love how Dean's emotions and behavior are affected by Sam and by the lack of Sam. Great chapter :)
| Guest chapter 1 . 12/24/2012
Oh, good start - intriguing... You captured dean's complex emotions so well, from the rest area to the light bulb. And I'm so glad I know who to picture Noah as;)
Mmm, those lashes... I fear that I won't make any progress in GoT until I finish this story!
Can't wait to continue, but the gifts aren't going to wrap themselves...
| Samantha V chapter 10 . 11/8/2012
Great ending to a truly wonderful story! Noah is a wonderful character and I look forward to reading the story with him. I miss the boys being brothers and getting along, so far this season it's like they can't stand each other... :(
