I think you really captured what might've happened, sadly. I don't know who to feel more sorrowful for...Haley or Aaron. As always, a great story!

Well...she tried to tell him & he still chose his job. She was smart to bring it up and, probably, end it. He thinks he is absolutely needed on the job - no one can take his place & there are still places to go up the ladder - so he will never back down. Sad but not that unusual.
| VanInBlack chapter 2 . 8/1/2012
That was fantastic!
| EmmaSimone chapter 2 . 7/31/2012
Very angsty. Very good.
| Ezrasleo chapter 2 . 7/31/2012
Quietly sad…. like the silence of a candle as it reaches the end of the wick and goes out.
This is a cohesive blend of an all too common real-life scenario and seamless characterization of Hotch. This is one of the very few places where he could be caught unawares and have to play catch up, instead of his usual position of being completely in control from the start. I think this piece highlighted that beautifully.
As far as the partner goes, I was struck by the line “Latching onto the one qualifying word in his statement…”. That is exactly how a woman thinks during a confrontation - every word choice has significance. This is magnified even more so as he has the skills of a seasoned attorney.
The conclusion was absolutely believable. I wasn’t sure myself how she would ultimately respond in the end. Sometimes a title is a specific descriptor of one character’s point of view, but I’ve seen it also be a commentary on the situation in general, and therefore not set in stone. In this case perhaps, as an optimist at heart, I imagined it might be a darkest-before-the-sunrise kind of situation, but I was by no means disappointed. A dose of reality, albeit unknown to him at the end, is equally satisfying.
As I said before, I have a huge soft spot for short stories - they demand a high level of honesty from both the author and reader. This, for me, is an amazing example of one. ;-D
Thank you for sharing it with us. Take care!

Just a beautifully written story. You captured the true essence of what was happening in the Hotchner household. A very well thought work. Thank you for sharing.

Loved this. It was angsty and good, and a great insight into what might have went on before the end of their marraige. Great job!

So sad. This happens frequently in relationships where the job is more important than the family.
| delia cerrano chapter 1 . 7/31/2012
I guess it would be normal to think there must be another woman because no normal man would spend all his waking time with no time off as devotedly as he does on a job not even on a career. It's obsessive & unhealthy...& exactly what Hotch does.
| Wiggle34 chapter 1 . 7/31/2012
WOW intersting start i do hope he isn't sleeping around
