| Eienvine chapter 1 . 9/19/2012
Whoa, you made me kind of like Beni for a while. That takes some serious doing. And thanks for writing a story about a time in Rick's life about which very little is said in Mummy fics.

Well, that was interesting, to say the least. And, currently being in a history course focusing on the Global Wars, WWI being the first unit, this especially rings a bell.

First off, I love The Deer Hunter (you know, inasmuch as someone can "love" that movie. It's pretty jarring and very long). The Russian roulette scene is pretty incredible.
This story was brilliant. It wasn't written in your usual voice; there's something distinctive and rough and downright masculine about it, and it works remarkably well for the setting and the characters and the scene.
I love Legion stories as a rule (assuming they don't involve Rick's cross-dressing sister/cousin/BFF), but this has got to be my favorite. I like that Francois (briefly mentioned in Deadly, correct?) makes an appearance, and I think Wilcox is a brilliant character. You can almost imagine him as Daniels' more sinister cousin. He's very layered for a one-shot character, and it's obvious his PTSD from the trenches is a major player in instigating this "game."
It's wonderful how "in character" you keep Rick and Beni even though the setting is so much more grim than the movie. Nothing this dark would have happened in the film, but you make their personalities and nuances work perfectly. Beni is particularly fascinating in this story (isn't he always?) because he's too unnerved the entire time to make witty/funny comments.
Again, just a really great story. Possibly your new best (?)...I'm favoriting it, either way. :)
