Of course they won't. Because by the time he does something that they would recognize, he will have to cover it up with incompetence so they don't realize anything about him. It's a downward spiral...
Bravo! *claps* I realize I am contributing to thine ego, but this is a wonderful story, and I look forward to the next chapter!

I'd also venture to say that-at LEAST seven times out of ten-Smith is also correct in his accusations.
Granted, he also typically tries to finagle a good deal out of the situation too, but he's still often correct.
