Oh! My god! I LOVE IT! Like you, I have not watched any of the other Star Trek movies, I have only watched the 2009 one and I LOVE IT! So imagine my gleeful happiness when I stumbled upon this :)

Lol, this was great! I love smart!jim fics.. Stories with him being a ditz and not understanding anything annoy me.
I'm looking forward to your original plots but I thought I'd mention a few things from TOS canon...
The writers meant for jim to be smart, even a bit of a geek/bookworm. For example, he played 3d chess with spock and won (spock was always fascinated). He had real paper books when everything was digital. He's friend gary mitchell from the academy would tease he about always having his nose in a book and always studying unless gary started dragging him out (he was also bullied by finnegan).
*he outlogicked a computer that ran an alien world (it was funny, you should watch that ep)
*he created a game called fizzbin (also funny... That ep was basically full of everyone acting like the mafia.. Just read the ep summary, lol)
* in naked time he wasn't affected as badly by the virus and was able to make spock help scotty save the ship and under his direction they were the first ship to travel back in time)
*in ... I think paradise syndrome... The ep with leila, everyone mutinied and left the ship - even spock - and went frocking in flowers as they were drugged by space pollen... Jim fought off the pollen enough to stay on board and come up with a plan with save everyone
*of course there was his great tactical skillls against the romulan commander (good ep)
*the corbormite manuver... He... Out bluffed them. It was really cool/smart of him.

I don't remeber example of him working through physical pain as he always got hurt... But here are some examples of working despite emotional/mental trauma:
*having the kill gary mitchell, his best friend, to save everyone
*having to fight a crazed spock, his best friend (thyla), to the death
*losing his son to khan
*losing his brother and sister in law and almost spock to flying parasites
*losing his wife and unborn child
*falling in love with edith and then ensuring she dies in front of him
*another wife dies in front of him in the first movie
*spock dies in front of him in a movie
*falling in love with a woman due to touching the chemicals in her tears (he was basically drugged/brainwashed) but still doing his duty
* on a prisoner rehab planet being brain washed a lot and forced to love a woman, he overcame it and did his duty
* he was the only one who didn't like tribbles and they ended up being a problem
* in the ep 'obsession' we learn he was i think the only survivor of this gas that hilled his friends and crew... And that it's now on the enterprise but no one beleives him so he has to deal with it
* he was on trial/court marshalled a few times - once he was framed and the other time an ex had switched bodies with him (he and spock held hands - the vulcan kiss)
* my favourite - tarsus IV.. We learn that he was one of only nine survivors who saw kodos' face and then the other survivors start dying and he meets kodos again... Sad because he went through hell and protected the kids and they died for nothing. There's lots of info on tarsus, and in my mind the reboot verse was 10 times worse.
It would be awesome if one of your chapters had flashbacks to tarsus and the pain etc he went through saving othe other children, and then showed how he had to deal with kodos again present time...
* in my head canon jim is just as good if not better at communcation/languages/tech as uhura as he's a computer geneius, plus hoshi sato died on tarsus and in my head she taught him everything she knew. He would be cool to have a chapter about him being unexpectedly good at languages

also, I love kirk spock slash - otp. Thyla is friend, brother, lover (soulmate), and according to one of the novels, that bond was deeper than any other type of relationship.

I really like this idea :) And the quality of your writing as well. I was wondering though, if we get to see Kirk go through faults in these shows of genius as well. Will he be able to save everyone? Just something to think about. Keep it up! I'll contribute ideas if I can think of them :)
