No lie... I missed Gandalf (or Bilbo for movieverse) confusing the trolls. But it worked, and good thing it's not going to have too many implication on the quest... or will it?

Oh, I forgot something:
I especially like the parts written in italic where Bilbo remembers for example the dead bodies of Kili and Fili or where he thinks about all the things that really frighten him contrary to the trolls.
It's a great way to show this flashbacks into his memory.
Love it!
Can't imagine how painful it must be to be around friends of whom you know they'll die if you can't prevent it from happening again.

I 've thought about this myself: what would Bilbo do if he could start the journey again, but with all the knowledge he had as his old self.
I must admit I'm not too happy about the Thorin/Bilbo relationship-part, but I think your story is up until now so well written and so intense and funny that I'm more than willing to overlook this one thing :-)
It's so funny to read how Bilbo speaks to Thorin in such a way and how he always reacts so totally different than any of them - especially Gandalf - would expect.
I'm more than looking forward to their encounter with the Orcs under the mountain and Thorins battle with Azog and of course the part in Mirkwood!
I hope you'll update soon because I'm really sad I can't read more of it right now! :-)

This story is so well thought out! I love that you've given such detail to Bilbo's memory of specific scenes and memories, as well as parts like with Ori and Dawlin ('Never thought a hobbit could make me feel like a dwarf again.'
I loved it!). I am eagerly looking forward to the next chapter.

...um, quick question. forgive me if i'm wrong, but in the time since the adventure in the original timeline, didn't bilbo learn elvish? some of it, i think? i'm not sure if i'm right, but why i bring it up is, for some reason, i keep seeing him slip up in rivendell and say soemthing to an elf in their language. that would certainly cause problems, especially if he snaps somehting to elrond, lol.

Whoa. Your writing is... brilliant. Truly. This story is something else, amazingly put, and I'm feverishly looking forward to its next chapter.
Just one small thing - although I would never wish for Bilbo to be a Mary Sue kind of character, you wouldn't be so cruel as to write a story like this only to have either Thorin, Kíli or Fíli killed, right? Right?

The encounter with trolls is lovely and well-thought. Who saw a dragon, wouldn't be afraid of the trolls, and Bilbo saw more than that.

However, every time says something like 'Kili is too important for such a task' I have a fit of disbelief. People normally do not talk like that, or, if they do, they don't say it so dispassionately. This makes Bilbo look much older and odder than he should. Or was it intentional?

Also, the phrase 'For all I know you could be as skilled in battle as an orc is at knitting' after Balin told them a story of the battle of Azanulbizar is a downright insult. I doubt Thorin would let it go that easily.
