| ApprenticeofDoyle chapter 21 . 1/10
This story is utterly fantastic. I could write pages of exulted praise about it, but I'll restrain myself- but I have to tell you that this story has captured me! Without tedious purple prose or silly characterizations you've formed a stunning and ultimately ENSNARING plot with the characters following paths that warm and break my heart. Bilbo is AMAZING, sweet Mahal above, and I love the intimate connections with each and every one of the dwarves of the Company. Thorin is gruff and angry and kind and at the moment completely crude and off his rocker, and I appreciate your fearless description of how dark abuse and insanity can be, and how it can reshape a person in the worst ways. I love Bard, too, I hope he makes a recurrence (if that would do well) because he didn't interact very much with the company and I love it when friendships are made within stories that could change everything and increase love for the wonderful characters that already exist.

Every day I anxiously check to see if this story has updated. It is definitely my favorite Hobbit fanfic so far. I love it so much! The way you portray everyone really gives new life to all the characters, and I love how things have progressed and all the changes Bilbo has made. And this chapter was DELIGHTFUL. Well, I mean in the sense that it was a very good chapter, but Thorin going insane is not delightful. I think you did a wonderful job portraying his descent into madness, and I'm so excited for the upcoming chapter! Thank you for writing such a fantastic story!

You go! It makes me ill the way people want to dress up abuse. I'm really loving the story! Any other story I've seen like this has been untouched for a long while, so it makes me really happy to see one so recently created and continually updated! Thanks for the great work!

Good chapter! And I completely agree with your rant. I've never been abused but reading about it or seeing it in movies or series and seeing it romantasised is just wrong.
| Malo919 chapter 21 . 1/10
Quick question... the sexual abuse thing you mentioned in your ranty-rant. What do you mean by it? I mean, I know sometimes sex just hurts, but from what I understand, some people either like it that way, or go as gentle with it as possible... So, a bit confused. What kind of sexual abuse? Like, forcing someone, or going rough?
Like the chapter though. While I do think a dose of jealousy/possessiveness/jealousy is cute, true, threatening something is not the way to go. Neither is making stupid decisions like Thorin's, though sometimes that's inevitable.
And sorry for whatever abuse you had to go through. And I know I shouldn't be apologizing for something I didn't do, but it's more me sympathizing with your situation. No one should go through any kind of abuse for anything.

Great chapter! :D I think it's one of my favorite so far!
| GregsMadHatter chapter 21 . 1/10
And thus the madness begins...Thorin, get a grip! Bilbo is just trying to help so you don't get killed! Please update soon!
| Destructive Habit chapter 21 . 1/10
Thank you very much for your authors note at the end of this chapter. I very much love the story and your portrayal of all the characters but it really struck me the lengths you went to show that Thorin laying hands on Bilbo is not acceptable. I have seen the effects abuse has on people and how it affects everyone around it. I've seen people come into the hospital I work at black and blue and claim this happened because they did something wrong, and I've seen a lot of people on sites like this and others who romanticize it, as you said. It's good to see a character who has the common sense to not wait until things escalate for him to go seek help, and I think that sets a very good example. Jealousy is not cute, controlling behavior is not them looking out for you, and abuse is not their way of showing they care. Most people don't realize that abuse is more than just what manifests physically, that any type, be it physical, emotional, or verbal, leaves lesions on the brain that have very far reaching consequences that we barely scratch the surface of. So thank you for making it a point to inform those who read the authors notes, and who can pick it up through the text itself in how the characters respond to it, that abuse in any form or degree is simply not okay and should not be accepted or excused. It gave me a whole other level of respect for you beyond what I already had for your writing.

Wow. I truly love your story! Your attention to detail and in-depth characterizations are just awesome. I love the voice for Bilbo and I really enjoy reading the story from his perspective, although the times you gave the readers a break and switched the view to one of the dwarves was also a delight that helped us connect to the other characters as well as give us a closer look into their personality.
This chapter with Bard is an eye-opener and I'm glad we're seeing him play a role in the events despite not killing Smaug (I swear I cheered when Kili did his awesome bow and arrow thing!). His easy camaraderie with Bilbo is nice and a good foil to Bilbo's relationship with Thorin. Even though we don't see a more in-depth account of Thorin's perspective, what you show through Bilbo's eyes is enough to reveal the creeping madness. The King's reaction to Bard and Bilbo is enough to highlight that. I completely agree with your stance on abuse and the Thorin your portraying is definitely not mentally healthy or emotionally stable.
Thanks for the exciting update! Can't wait for the next chapter! :D

Oh my god, THAT is how you end it? Aghh this was a great chapter and I really, really hope that you can update again soon. :)
| Meg chapter 21 . 1/10
All hail Bilbo, the true heart of under the mountain. The One Ring might have a pull on Thorin as well, i imagine. It knows Frodo's fears well, and Thorin spends the greatest deal of time near the both of Bilbo and the ring. I cannot imagine it would not try to prey on someone so susceptible to a sickness of greed.

I look forward to the next chapter! I love how this story is going.
