While he had a good sense of command, he seemed robotic, as if he were merely going through the motions. - this particular part sounds really weird, did they have an idea of what robot us in late 16th century? Most likely not, I'd rephrase with something related to lack of life spirit or something.

The remainder sounds really good, can't think if other improvements right now but will get back once I come up with any.
