Nice work, and appreciate the plug for modestneeds dot org.
Depression can be lethal because it shuts down our brains, exactly when we most need new coping skills.
A group of churches got together and jointly run a homeless charity near my old home. Each congregation makes room in their homes for a week, for somebody homeless. Then pass the person on to a new home, the next week.
Because the volunteer effort isn't overwhelming, the hosts can welcome their guests, as guests. They're only staying a week.
The benefit to the homeless is huge. A lot of these folks never learned some basic social skills. Nobody taught them to discuss their needs. Or promote their talents. Or haggle and bargain. Folks who learned those skills can cope with distress, because they rebuild a community, out of whoever survived some calamity or other. Folks who missed learning those skills, don't have them.
Most of the homeless folks in the program, have found an income and a place to live, in 3-6 months.
Another promising program in Chicago, specifically targets homeless people who are mentally ill...volunteers provide them a room to stay in, for what Medicaid will pay.
In the end, the biggest problem with being poor and nuts, isn't the lack of money. It's the lack of knowing that one's life is worth sustaining. When we stop telling ourselves to keep going, some of us simply freeze up.
I think you've hit the nail on the head, with this LA homeless mom and child. She's shocked that anybody actually cares about her, after she had stopped taking care of herself.
The lesson that Americans still haven't learned about depression, is that it is curable.

Took me a while to re-find this story! Little gem was hiding from me... in any case I read this whole thing a long while back, and I'm probably going to be re-reading it soon! I just first wanted to make sure that I had it on my favorite's list. You'll see more reviews from me soon, I have a lot of non-stop praise to give you on the amazingness that is your characterization of Johanna.

This chapter was great! I mean, spiraling out of control isn't great, but you related it so vividly. I'm really enjoying the story.
| Loquitamacat chapter 3 . 6/24/2015
Ah, the Top Gun volleyball scene. I think my best friend and I wore out that section of the VHS tape in high school, haha. This is such a fun read, but I'm trying not to laugh or even smile for fear of having to explain what is so amusing to my kids!
| armsoftheoceans chapter 46 . 6/12/2015
WOW WHAT A RIDE! I cried, and laughed, and did both at the same time. I am so glad I randomly found this one day last winter and decided to pull an all nighter catching up on it. You are fabulous.

Ok so I started reading your humongous "one shot" story several months ago (last year)...seriously you have rivaled word count wise with a couple of the "a song of ice and fire" series (game of thrones) books ;). I think this was the first story I read in fanfiction where Johanna was the one telling the story. It has seriously been a pleasure to read this awesome grand tale of an adventure you have told. I plan on reading it again from beginning to end since it is complete. I laughed my ass off at some of your descriptions of scenes like Katniss and Peeta kissing and comparing it to the kiss in the princess bride. Some of the character descriptions if I recall correctly (brian looking like josh hutcherson)...which is funny, because josh hutcherson is who plays peeta in the movies. Though I totally never envisioned Peeta looking like josh, personally when I read the books. Anywho I am pretty happy with how your story ended, full of HEA's.
| Joidevie chapter 46 . 6/4/2015
Oh my goodness, this fic was so great! I waited until you finished it to read it in one go, and I stayed up and inhaled it in record time. I loved the premise to tell Everlark through Jo's perspective, I cried my eyeballs out along with Jo during the funeral, and loved the HEA ending for Jo/Brue. I also feel like I understand your Tumblr blog better now, with food porn and men in kilts (not that I didn't already appreciate it!). Sorry, I'm terrible at reviewing, but I wanted to let you know I thought you did a great job and I enjoyed your story immensely. Thank you for sharing your writing!

This was my all time fav FanFiction! I loved reading it from Jo's point of view and she was just as I imagined soo funny! I loved the way you brought all the characters together and the story was so well written that I laught and cried with each of them. Please write some an epilogue like 5/10years down the line! You are an amazing writer don't ever stop writing!

I started reading this story last night, and had a hard time putting my laptop down and leaving the story in order to go to work. I cried during the funeral scene. He was my favourite character, and I had truly felt his presence throughout the story. Although I realize the plot importance of his death, to bring brue and jo together, I really didn't want to believe he was gone. You are a brilliant writer. Keep up the amazing work.

It feels so weird that this is over; I really want to go back and read those first few chapters again. Congratulations, this was a wonderful fic that I always looked forward to reading. The character development was absolutely phenomenal, possibly the most detailed and intense within this fandom. Bravo, this was wonderfully written. Are there any hopes for a possible "In the future" type of drabble/one-shot? It's going to be hard let go of this story!

I found your story towards the last half and am so sorry I didn't discover it sooner. I really enjoyed Jo's personality and jokes. The puns and alliterations made me so happy as I read your chapters. I fell in love with Brue and Angus right along side Jo. Difficult times in RL led me to fanfiction, tumblr, and your beautiful story. Thank for taking all the time to research and write this gem. I miss it already and know when things are bad I will comeback and read it again.
| Norbert's Mom chapter 46 . 4/10/2015
Wow. That's a lot of research. Good luck on your original story.
| Norbert's Mom chapter 45 . 4/10/2015
What a great ending. Congratulations on completing your story.
| Court81981 chapter 45 . 4/7/2015
I have to say that I don't think whatever words I put here will accurately convey how perfectly and beautifully you brought together all the couples in this story for their HEAs. Each one was so fitting for the couples, based on the little we know from canon for some of them. (Well, and not killing finnick, thanks for that) I know this was more Jo's story than Everlark, but how you had Katniss overcome her commitment phobia was just brilliant. And for Jo and Brue to drunk-wed and then decide to give it a go…just, yeah. And I might be watching Outlander again. So…brava, my friend. Congrats on this amazing story and journey you took us on.

I can't decide if I'm ecstatic or distraught. Followed this from the beginning and loved every second. Squealed outloud with every update and read to the early hours of the morning. What I thought would be a lighthearted, comedy based fic turned out to be something touching and so in depth that I began applying and comparing it to my own life. Thank you for Girls Night Out and sharing your talent!
