I love the fill in the gaps scenes too!
I can't imagine that everything would be hunky dory between them immediately after her confession, so I'm glad that you acknowledged that here, and I think this battle of wills chapter was very very necessary. They are both such stubborn characters and so it feels so natural that they would have butted heads over this matter - again, something that we never got to see in the show. I liked that Anna told him that it was time for one or the other, even if he wouldn't show his hand either way. The almost-confession was both sweet and frustrating.

I'm glad you chose to explore this moment, and that he acknowledged that his wording over "have been married" was very dicey. And him contemplating telling her the whole truth was great. We never got any hints over whether he had thought about telling her prior to when he did in the show, so that was a very welcome addition - and heartbreaking too, with him not wanting to see the love leaving her eyes despite everything.

Up until season 4 I always felt so bad for Molesley. I think 4 was his season to shine. We finally stopped feeling sorry for him.
I never thought of this as Bates' least noble moment, but I think you're right about that.
I can't wait to read about Anna and Bates' rendezvous and the concert ]

I don't think Bates is being "un-noble" (ignoble?)...I just think he is clueless, he is a man after all!
| Mishka67 chapter 90 . 20h ago
I love the Moseley moments! I always felt sorry for Bates in this scene though. It was as if he really didn't know what to say to Moseley, and so, as we all do, he said it badly.
| Latitude24 chapter 90 . 3/13
Hee. I think Bates' reaction is a little of both: helping Moseley save face and reestablishing his place at Downton as Lord Grantham's valet AND with Anna (he did make a move on Anna). A sort of "thanks for holding my place", passing the torch ceremony.
Of course, we don't know what Bates and Moseley's relationship is prior to the series. According to unfilmed canon, they knew each other in the war. I can't see Moseley being especially brave or having leadership qualities, especially compared to Bates.
| Paige M. Carter chapter 90 . 3/13
I think Lord Grantham should've told Molesley himself what was going on, not leave it to Bates. Love that Bates is home again.

Another great chapter!
I do feel sorry for Molesley, no one tries harder than he does. Things just don't ever seem to work out for him, but he always keeps his dignity. Let's all hope that it works our for him with Baxter next season!

Oh, yes... he was not kind or fair at all... I like how you wrote it and hopefully Bates DID tell Lord G it was from Molesley.

I had been waiting so long for this encounter and it did not disappoint. Beautifully written as always... loved that second to last paragraph.
| JamesLuver chapter 14 . 3/11
Anna's frustration was palpable at the beginning. I liked that she'd considered all possibilities, but this one was the one that hurt her the most. And her hoping that he'd still be her friend afterwards was so sad. But her determination at the end to carry on as she was because there was no other option is just so Anna-like; I like that she's practical and knows that she won't be able to stop loving him.
| JamesLuver chapter 13 . 3/11
Such a wonderful moment! I liked the way you contrasted their points of view throughout the chapter, with Anna only wanting to help and John thinking of it as pity once again. But my favourite part was Anna explaining to John where she thought the snuffbox was. I liked that it was the moment where John realised even more acutely just what wonderful qualities Anna had, and him telling himself that it wasn't the best moment for "mooning" made me smile.
| Awesomegreentie chapter 89 . 3/9
So sweet. I love this scene. You write it all so well.
| Latitude24 chapter 88 . 3/9
Ooops, I had my episodes mixed up. Mr. Bates and Anna do have a private reunion. But, they should have been kissing! They definitely would have been kissing!
| JamesLuver chapter 12 . 3/9
Wonderful take on this scene. The way that you contrasted the beginning and end of the chapter with Anna not envying and then envying Gwen worked really really well, and it added even more poignancy to the whole thing.
