pretty much how I figured it. then she acts all hurt when he finally gave in to Nandi, even though she never told Mal anything.

Especially sad because of why she feels like she has to be so strong and dignified. :(

Oh, I think both have more than average amounts of pride, but Inara's is a little less deserved in some ways. Mal's had to change who he is more than once before the series began and said changes were in reaction to having his life torn away from him by the Alliance, forcing a rebuild each time; Inara's pride is related to her status as a Companion, where she's been presumably taught to never be vulnerable and to always be in control of her emotions and thoughts. She's not ready to change and that's a fight Mal would need to carefully plan to win to have Inara in his life permanently...
