You did indeed make me think- well done!
| rthstewart chapter 5 . 8/8/2013
Welll... I've been avoiding this story. I don't read bromance usually and I tend to avoid any story with the NOT SLASH label as 1)it's invariably hate speech; 2)touchy feely bromance usually reads really m/m slashy to me, which I don't tend to read or write much of generally; and 3) Peter and Edmund in angsty co-dependent relationships are just not my favorite flavor of delicious cake.
But this was recc'd to me with a, "it's not what you think."
You surprised me. I thought D was a very well-fleshed out OC with an interesting and sad backstory. The story itself is well written. Peter is genuinely affecting and tragic and I was gladdened that he was slowly growing out of the unhealthy focus on Edmund (which fandom gives him but has no support in books or film) with the aid of a woman who loves him. Love can be transformative and so it is here. I was very amused with all the references to adult play between a married couple AND also have that exist as commentary on the tendency in bromance to tie up Edmund and injure the brothers so that they may tenderly tend one another's wounds (and strip off shirts and britches to linger on lean planes of chest - I died when Peter pulled off D's trousers because Peter undressing an injured Edmund, usually unwillingly, is such a trope in these stories. NO means No unless Peter is taking Edmund's clothes off!)
Everything in those stories that makes me wince and avert my gaze in embarrassment you incorporated here but put it in the context of a loving, married couple who are really trying to help one another to heal.
Your commentary about the scorn in which Lucy and Susan are held is also spot on and very sad to behold.
As a metafic, this was a really interesting exercise. I'd love to see you do something about the infantalized Lucy and the many troubling ways Susan is portrayed and the general lack of healthy agency of female characters in Narnia fic.
| Heliopause chapter 5 . 8/8/2013
Clever; this neatly skewers that unhappy tendency in this fandom to work which teeters on the edge of torture porn and of sublimated/coded/denied brotherslash. Teeters on the edge, and actually falls in, at times, sadly.
| you went there chapter 5 . 8/8/2013
The back story on D was heartbreakingly true and a terrible commentary of how women are devalued. You make that same point with the tales of the glorious kings and their absent sisters. You also called out a very uncomfortable practice in this fandom of abusing Peter and Edmund in fetishistic ways and take their extreme, intimate relationship to its logical conclusion. Peter's attraction to D begins because of subliminated attraction to his brother - probably not even something he was conscious of but that can certainly be inferred from the smarm bromance so popular here. It's amazing but not at all surprising that once we learn that D is Peter's wife and not his brother that readers flee because apparently Peter is only supposed to weep and paw over his brother and not a yucky girl. This is fascinating Narnia fandom meta and a very good and very sad story
| Ariyah chapter 5 . 8/7/2013
Peter has pulled the quilt over his head and is grumbling to himself. ..."Indisposed," he mutters, and I poke him in the side.
That part actually made me laugh out loud. :-D
The ending was great. It shows how this is not a replacement for the brotherly bond between Peter and Edmund, but it is its own relationship with its similarities. I liked how you built this up into a solid relationship based on the right things and also appreciated her backstory.
| lost-in-elysium chapter 5 . 8/7/2013
So much was thrown in my face it's taking me a while to comprehend all this. So Peter didn't return to England with his siblings? I feel so bad for him. Well, at least he has his wife and kids. It would be nice if you wrote another story that more closely examines Peter and Diamonda's relationship. However,I still find this pretty vague and think it could have been explained over several chapters instead of cramming it into a single one.
Regardless, I enjoyed this story. It really did make me think. The twist had me reeling. I do think some depictions Peter and Edmund's relationship are a bit too mushy to be realistic.I agree wholeheartedly with everything you stated in your second author's note. This story did leave an impression on me and I intend to read more of your work.
| songsmith chapter 1 . 8/7/2013
I'm amazed by how many people were startled that D wasn't Edmund. The relationship wasn't in the least brotherly or platonic. Which sort of makes me wonder how people view the brothers... but then, you were getting compared to one of the slashiest writers on the site (WillowDryad), so...
| burntoutlikeabrightlight chapter 5 . 8/7/2013
I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. I love the brotherfic thing, so I was pretty disappointed with the last chapter and now this. Oh well, I guess it was a nice thought here.
| TA DA chapter 5 . 8/7/2013
I loved your second author's note. More please.
| lost-in-elysium chapter 4 . 7/16/2013
Wow... I really thought I was starting to read an incest fic until the twist came in. I was extremely confused and shocked. So it wasn't Edmund after all? Then where is he? I thought the brothers were abnormally... close and affectionate and suspected something was going on, but this explains everything. That was a really good plot twist - it caught me off guard, and I never would have expected it. I am looking forward to the next chapter; I want an explanation behind all of this!
| Ariyah chapter 4 . 7/15/2013
"my heart beats so fast I think it might pound right out of my heart" - do you mean her heart will beat out of her /chest/? 'cause what you've got there doesn't make sense. :-P
I believe Su and Lu are majesties, not highnesses. Unless it's as AU as that...?
And I was going to say something about how dangerously sensual the two were getting... and then I saw the name and decided to drop it.
You delivered on the twist, I'll give you that! (no wonder you wanted to make sure I'd seen that you updated! :-P)
| WillowDryad chapter 4 . 7/14/2013
Okay, I'm quite puzzled now. But I'm glad you didn't go where it looked you were going.
| Bethany chapter 1 . 7/14/2013
Wow. Did not see that coming. :D Please update soon! On pins and needles over here!
| Blue chapter 4 . 7/14/2013
what? wait? whoa. You reall fooled me. great stuff. kinda weird that I couldn't tell the difference between Edmund and Diamonda. Need to think about that.
Is there more? I'd like more an explaination in the story about what happened. So Peter's all alone in Narnia and he marries D?
