This is really so sweet. I can totally see this as having taken place. I got a kick out of your describing Matthew's heavy breathing; I was so aware of that in Series 1. Such an endearing character he was. Quite confident and at-ease at times; bashful and a bit bumbling at other times. Always with a natural charm. Dan Stevens played the aspects of Matthew's personality so well. It was impossible not to have fond affection for Matthew, and also not to find him very sexy! Oh, Matthew...

Sigh...yes this is probably how it went down...why Matthew was so upset with Mary at the garden party. He felt strung along...with no clear reason for her hesitation except in his mind the baby and the title and the money. He did not know to ask if there was anything else...how could he have suspected anything else?
