I do believe that Dean helped Sam when he was younger and this was such a nice job of showing that. I don't know why they were so against Sam going to college. He could have done that and got a good job and been John & Dean's home base. And probably gone out with them some. But of course it wasn't meant to be...sigh.

First off, thank you for writing my request! I was not expecting that so soon, and seeing it really put a smile on my face! :D And now to address the chapter itself...
This was a wonderfully insightful chapter, and you did such a great job of exploring the way Dean viewed academia. I thought it was an excellent touch that you had Dean be a straight A student as a young boy (with the exception of the occasional 'C' in the 'works well with others' category" which was hilariously accurate), showing that Dean is in fact brilliant. But then he dedicated himself so thoroughly to educating Sam. John wasn't around to teach Sammy for him, and so Dean took on the responsibility. And though his grades slipped for it, his pride in Sam grew as Sam got smarter and smarter. It was sad, but also very sweet. I loved how you worked it all up to Sam letting slip that perhaps one day he would go off to college to be a lawyer, and Dean panicked. His first fear being that Sam would leave him alone, and his second being that he wouldn't have access to Sam to look after him. I think those fears came in the right order, though we know Dean primarily cares for his brother's safety, it makes sense that his knee-jerk fear would be personal. Then the ending just kicked my feels. The idea that Dean was proud of Sam, and comforting himself with the thought that surely his little brother would change his mind... *sigh* So heartbreaking. Anyway, this was just fabulous! As always, you've given me a great read, and I'm especially grateful you did such a fantastic job with my request. (Not that I'd anticipate any less with ANY of your chapters.) ;) Keep up the great work! :D
P.S. Your description of how good Dean was with cars was perfect. The idea that Dean was a mechanical genius, but Sam didn't understand/value that kind of skill, so Dean doesn't understand how impressive it really is when he compares himself to his sibling's book smarts. :P

Teddy Bear picnic in the motel room...how sweet. Poor sick, sad and overwhelmed Sammy. So happy that John was there for him too :)

Awww loved it! How sweet!

AWWW! This was full of so much sweetness that I literally couldn't contain myself. I "aww"ed out loud. :D I loved that Sammy just wanted to go to a teddy bear picnic with his stuffed bunny. (Kudos for naming it "Calico". It was cute, and sounded like something Sam might name his bunny.) When he was crying, I wanted desperately to give him a hug myself. Poor kid! But thankfully John was there. (And rarely do I get to say that, since he is rarely the comforting paternal figure. lol) It was really nice to see John be so kind to Sam for a change. Now, of course Dean made things completely better by giving Sam the teddy bear picnic he had missed out on...But it was very nice to see John taking care of Sam and being gentle with him...Concerned about his health, even. Basically, I loved this. Great job! :D

Lol, poor Sam. Love Dean's teasing. Great, fun chapter.
| deanstheman chapter 22 . 2/23
That was terrific! A perfect choice of hunt that would eat at Dean and have that strong of an effect on him. He always had a soft spot when it came to kids. Throw in a dead kid that looked like Sam and a fifteen year old Dean definitely would have melted. I also love the way you had Dean sit on it for a week, simmering and eating at him and only then did he break down. Thanks for writing this one - I loved it :)
