Gave this a reread after many years. Such wonderful characters for mature readers giving hope to those from broken families that HEAs can exist. This was just a great story.

I loved reading a story from Edward's point of view.

My husbands a doctor. We got married when he was an undergrad and me and our children that we had along the way followed him across the country for a years. Nothing was stable for a while and I slowly resented how my husband was being able to do all these things to accomplish his dream, people looking up to him, being a VIP in so many different areas. So with this past that I have, I understand Bella. But at the same time, when I’m looking at it from my husbands point of view, I understand edwards point of view, too. He was never a bad husband or father. He was just absent, a lot. Neither of them were wrong, and neither of them were right. Bella could have gone to Kentucky with him. Edward could have not re-upped. It also feels like there was a breakdown of communication because Bella should have been telling Edward for months, if not years, that at 15 they needed to be done. For their marriage sake, and their kids sake. It’s a convo that should have been had long before Edward for that call.
And I understand Edward being with other women. Hate it. So much. So I’ll just pretend it sucked. Ha.
I do wish Bella had been able to have a good relationship. Her choosing between a good boyfriend and Edward would have been more poignant. As would it have been if Edward had sacrificed something career wise.

I’m surprised it took the kids this long to show any sort of animosity toward their father! Like, most teenagers would be so posed at their parent for abandoning them like he did! I’m glad that JC finally said something. They all seem to be letting Edward off the book super easy! He keeps crying when people point out how bad it was- and then Bella comforts him. But really, he needs to man up. He has zero reasoning for leaving them for Kentucky and leaving them for the army. But there had to be something? Right? Right? You don’t just blow up your family because instead of 15 years in the army you had a goal of 20.

Just found this story :) ten years too late. I like how it shows the nuances of marriage. I also haven’t ever been in or in a relationship with someone in the army. But I can’t even imagine how hard it would be.
I kinda hate how Edward finished his dream- his twenty years- and then decided he wanted Bella back. I think it would have been more poignant if he had sacrificed something, career wise.
I also am slightly over the trope of, when they split Edward had more sexual partners and good sex, while Bella has crappy sex and either only one partner or none. I wonder why, in the fandom, this seems to be a running theme?
Other than that, the writing is great. I love that you call rose posey. And I love how it shows that, when marriages aren’t taken care of, they can definitely break down. I just wish it hadn’t taken Edward so long to put in an effort. It does seem like Bella’s like, oh, you finally accomplished your goal so now we are your priority. :(
The story definitely makes me think, though!

I love Sarge! I'm glad JC and Alice will have their kid with them, and be a family. I didn't like the prior arrangement. It was sweet of Sarge and Bella to offer to care for the baby, but it really is JC and Alice's responsibility! Glad they were able to help TJ! I love this story, and these characters.

Good story. Edward was so different.. I don’t know more blue collar. Different but in a good way. Kind of funny how the cycle of teen pregnancy continues.
