first train home

The first time that Sakura restarted a heart, she was thirteen. She could still remember the horrifying stillness under her palms, sweat sliding along her too vulnerable flesh, and her knuckles trembling with the strain of too much, too much, too much.

It had taken that awful stillness, the feeling of clocks steadily cracking under the weight of a life, the wisp of death's fingers gliding under her arms to the body for her world to suddenly rewind, for her mind to clear and her palms to fire up to green so rapidly that tissue regenerated with a thump, thump, thump.

Unsteady and slow, but alive.

But she never presumed that she'd ever have to do it on Sasuke. Not with a hole going through his heart, not with too much blood gone, leaking out of his chest and mouth and soaking into the dehydrated ground.

"No," she choked out, eyes blurring with emotions she couldn't control. Her fingers pressed to his bare chest, and as the tears began to spill down, following the curvature of her nose, the diamond on her forehead pulsed and burst. "No, no, no—"

Deep plum lines drew themselves into her skin, skidding along her cheekbones, down her neck and shoulders, wrapping around her torso and legs and forearms and fingers, and all in that moment her hands burned so bright.

His body jerked, head lolling to the side as he violently coughed up blood, and her free hand went to cradle his jaw, wiping away the blood as best as she could, lips still tugged into a deep frown as she loomed over him, watery eyes staring down at him.

"Don't ever do that again," she managed hoarsely, desperately, ducking her head just low enough that her forehead was pressed against his, tears still slipping off of her face and onto his. "Don't ever—"

His hand curled over the top of hers, where it was resting on the scarred flesh over his heart.

"I know," he rasped.

The last time Sakura restarted a heart, she was sixteen and her lips were pressed against his, feeling the glorious rush of blood in the soft skin of his neck.

Her skin was sweaty, her fingernails had blood crusted under them, and she trembled.

Unsteady and slow, but alive.
