Disclaimer: I do not own Twilight. I do own a kick ass pink Kitchen-Aide Mixer that I used this morning to make banana bread.
The halls were empty as I approached the chemistry lab.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Edward asked me for what had to be the hundredth time. I wasn't sure of anything. I just knew I needed help and I had trusted Jake once. He hadn't failed me then so why would he fail me now?
"Just stop," I hissed before noticing how the sound echoed around me.
"Fine, but I want to make it clear that I think this is a huge fucking mistake and I am completely opposed to this," he bitched as I stopped in front of the closed door.
"Duly noted," I whispered as I grabbed the door handle to pull the door open only to find the door locked.
"What the fuck," I mumbled while trying the door again while Edward let out an exasperated sigh.
"I told you the guy was an asshole," he groused as I looked around the empty hall to see if Jake was near-by, but no such luck.
"What's the password?" a voice bellowed out from behind the locked door.
"What the fuck?" I mumbled as I tried to door again.
"No password, no entrance," the guy's voice yelled in a somewhat official sounding tone.
"This is fucked up," Edward bitched as he turned away from the door as if we were leaving. I was about to follow him when the door flew open. A muscular blonde boy with a rat face greeted me with a leering grin.
"Well, hello there doll face," he smirked as he leaned against the door frame like he was striking some pose. I had no doubt that he was trying to impress me, but it didn't work. He just looked like a douche bag instead.
"Who the fuck is this?" Edward demanded as he appeared at my side while I stared at the boy in front of me.
"James, stop fucking around and let her in," I could hear Jake call out. The irritation in his voice made me grin.
"Not until the babe tells me what her name is," the guy named James teased as a red head appeared at his side.
"You're right, baby, she is hot," she stated as she appraised me with her ice blue eyes. "Nice tits, good hair, her face is ok, but I really need to see her ass before she ask her to join us for a three-some."
"What the fuck did he invite you to?" Edward demanded as I stared at the couple who slowly began to grope each other in front of me.
"Get out of the way," Jake bitched as he shoved the idiots out of the doorway.
"Good to see ya, Bee," he grinned as he motioned for me to enter. I glanced towards Edward who growled in response.
"Come on," he whined as I walked into the room behind Jacob.
"James and Vickie, this is Bella Swan," Jacob called out as I trailed behind while Edward stuck to me like a shadow. "Bees, that asshole is James DuPuis, resident creeper, and his girlfriend Vickie Hall, she's into chicks just so you know."
"Oh, this is precious," Edward chuckled in a low sarcastic tone that caused me to grin as the couple eyed me carefully. There was no doubt that he was hating this and that was ok since so was I.
I stepped into the room and noticed Mary Alice sitting upon the black granite counter tops. Her pink baby doll dress with black tights and combat boots made her look like a murderous doll as she stared at me.
"Al, you remember Bella," Jake comment as the girl stared at me.
"Is he dating Wednesday Adams?" Edward asked with a giggle that caused me to laugh along with him. I had never thought about the striking resemblance Mary Alice had to Wednesday Adams until he had mentioned it.
"I told you he was," I whispered to Edward as he continued to laugh at the odd couple.
"No, you didn't. I'm pretty sure I would have remembered that interesting bit of information," he countered with a slight laugh as I felt his hand settle into the small of my back once more.
"Bell, we want to welcome you to the Muscatine Paranormal Society," Jake continued on with pride as he waved his hand towards the weirdoes that formed this club. "We are at your service."
"Wait a minute," Edward laughed boisterously as he motioned towards the living that could not see him. "Are you to tell me that this is the brain trust that has been formed in my honor?"
His words were mocking and ripe with laughter as we looked around at the collective group of outcasts that had gathered to help him.
"I may just be better off here," Edward chuckled as I shook my head at him.
"He's with you," Wednesday Adams announced causing the others to look at me skeptically once more. "He's always with you."
"I told you Al…" Jake began cuing me in that he had told her about our conversation.
"Mom said she could see him on you," Alice continued on as I stood before her. "She said the connection between you two was something she had never witness before."
"So Madam Cleo noticed us. Big fucking deal," Edward scoffed but one except me could hear him.
"We've tried to contact this spirit before and he was a total dick," James commented with a pointed look as if I had something to do with Edward's attitude problem.
"Edward hates it when the living are being dildos," I shot back and then listened to Edward laugh over my summation of what happened between them.
"Dildos?" James barked back as if I had offended him while the others snickered along with Edward.
"Yes, dildos," I repeated as I motioned towards the Ouija board in the middle of one of the tables closest to Vickie. "Really, is this the best you can do to contact him?"
My words caused a low grumble through the cast of characters. It was enough for me to believe I had the upper hand even if that feeling was fleeting.
"What does he want?" Alice asked breaking up the bitching with her question. "Besides you, that is."
Her accusation was pretty damning as I bristled beneath her bitchy comment.
"Who said he wanted me?" I questioned with a laugh as the girl eyed me with a cold grin.
"My mom said that she has never seen anything like you and him, that your bond is almost too strong. She says it dangerous," Alice continued on with a wicked smile like she was sharing some dark secret about me. It was unnerving.
"You know, I don't need this," I shot back at her as my cold tone did nothing to wipe the smile off the girl's face.
"Bella, just…" Jake began before turning to tell his girlfriend to shut her mouth.
"He's going to kill you. Mom said so. She saw it," she announced in a loud voice, talking over the top of Jake and the others while I turned to leave. The voices were loud and distracting as I made my way towards the door before the first glass beaker shattered against the wall.
The others scattered across the room, away from the flying glass that Edward had used to defuse the situation.
"Edward, just stop it!" I barked as I turned to find him across the room, arm raised in a pitcher's stance with another glass flask in his hand. He dropped the glass; letting it shatter by his feet before moving faster than what I could see so that he was standing before me.
"I would never hurt you," he pledged with a pleading look upon his handsome face.
"And I would never allow anyone to hurt you," he tried to assure me, but it was all for naught. I didn't need him to tell me that he would never do. I could feel it. It wasn't possible. Edward Cullen was many things, but a killer was not one of them.
"I know you wouldn't," I assured him while taking his hand in mine. The moment we touched I could feel the tension in him ease as sense of peace settled in the air between us. I waited and watched as the worried look melted off of face before turning back towards the others.
"No big deal," I stated as I took in their silence and stunned expressions.
"So," I continued on as they stared at me with stunned expressions. "What's next?"
Edward hovered close by as Jake pulled Alice aside to talk to her. I didn't know what they were saying, but I knew it was about Edward and me.
"So, you think you have to solve his murder?" James asked me as Vickie and he sat down at the table in front of me.
"I think so. I mean, the angel told us that he had to save someone in order for him to go home," I rambled as I thought back to Jasper and his cryptic way of talking.
"An angel?" James questioned with a skeptic look, but Vickie seemed unfazed at all by the angelic reference.
"Is this what he wants?" she asked me curiously as she pulled out her note book as if she was going to take notes over our odd conversation.
"Who? Edward?" I questioned as Edward shook his head as he placed our entwined hands upon his thigh. "No, he has no interest in this at all, but his brother does."
"Oh, yeah," James groaned in agreement while Vickie regaled a story of Emmett Cullen and his odd behavior. He was part of the town folk lore with his rantings about Edward. Most felt sorry for him, but some were cruel.
"So, what have you done so far?" she asked in s serious voice that made me smile.
"I did an internet search of his name," I replied as Edward's head shot up in response.
"When did you do that?" he questioned as I watched Vickie shake her head at me.
"I came up with nothing but the scholarship in his name," I continued on, ignoring him for the moment.
"Yeah, the Muscatine Journal is really behind on uploading old stories. They maybe have gone twenty years back, but this falls out of that scope," she agreed as she continued to scribble in her notebook.
"Does he know who killed him?" James asked with a curious look before Vickie swatted at him as if his question was somehow insensitive. "What? Why do we have to do all the leg work if the guy knows?"
It was a good question, and one I had asked him before.
"Uhm, his memories of that night are pretty chaotic, so no," I explained as they both nodded as if that made sense to them.
"What about his brother?" James asked as he played with the extra pen that Vickie had left on the desk top.
"I think Emmett has a theory as to who did this, but I can't find the folder that he gave me to hand over to my dad," I explained as he shook his head at me.
"No, I meant do you think it's his brother?" he asked earning a response an immediate response from Edward.
"No way," he shot back in a growl as I shook my head no to both guys.
"Edward actually saw my dad in the memories of that night," I confessed and then watched as both of them sputtered for words.
"Holy shit," James sputtered as Vickie stared at me with an unreadable expression.
"Yeah," I mumbled while Edward shook his head in disagreement.
"I told you I don't think it was him," he reminded me in an exasperated voice.
"Edward doesn't think it's him, but…" I trailed off as Vickie chimed in immediately.
"But you do?"
"I don't know what to think," I confessed as the girl nodded her head as if what I felt made sense.
"Okay. Well, what do you think?" James asked abruptly as he turned towards Vickie as if she were the brains between them. Maybe she was. I couldn't tell yet. I just knew I needed some input from someone since I was lost as to what to do next.
"I think we need to go to the library and do some research," she stated with a firm nod of her head. "I also think that we need to see what your mom can do."
"I don't know, babe. I mean, this could fuck with her job and how in the hell would I explain this?" James muttered as he rubbed at the back of his neck.
"Your mom?" I questioned, interrupting their private conversation so I understood what I had started by asking them for help.
"She works at the police station. She can get the old police report and case notes," Vickie explained as if it were everyday the involved the police in their research.
"I don't…" I began as I glanced towards Edward who was shaking his head no at me over this idea.
"The police should have investigated his death like a homicide until it was ruled a suicide," she explained as James pulled out his phone to call her. "It was ruled a suicide, right?"
I had no idea and when I looked towards Edward he could only shrug.
"Oh Jesus," she muttered just as Jake and Alice approached.
"We're going to have to do everything," she whined to him as Jacob looked at me with a worried look.
"Seriously, Jake, she is absolutely no fucking help," Vickie continued to bitch about me as I looked away. I felt the sick wave of embarrassment for the first time ever over my lack of ability when it came to dead.
"Doesn't matter, Vick, we have to help her," he explained in a serious voice that took me by surprise.
"You mean, we have to help him," Vickie corrected him with a snotty smile that made the other laugh. It was clear this girl always thought she was right.
"No, I meant we have to help Bella before it's too late," he clarified as I gawked at him in response. I had never known Jake to be serious. Maybe this was something new from our years apart. I had no idea; I just knew it didn't sit well with me.
Thanks for reading & I am sooooo sorry for any mistakes in this chapter. I wanted to get this out there before diving head first in Camp Nano today to focus on my Org Fic.
