Chapter Eleven: Ordinary

"Mommy, can I have this?" Alex asked for the hundredth time as he jumped up and down the aisle in the Target. I was hoping if I continued to ignore him he would get the idea that when I said no the first time that was my answer.

Only my son didn't give up that easily.

"No, Alex. I already told you no," I replied pushing the cart up the aisle.

"But I was a good boy today at school," he whined jumping up onto the side of the cart. I looked at him with a brow raised. He knew better than to jump up on the side of the cart, especially seeing that last time he fell and hurt himself.

Quickly, he got down off the side of the cart understanding the look I was giving him. I looked at the toy he was still holding in his hand.

"Put the toy down, Alex," I told him stopping the cart.

"But whhhyyyy?"

"Because I said so," I replied raising my voice a little. I used to promise myself I wouldn't use that excuse "because I said so" once I had kids, but I found myself doing a lot of things I said I wouldn't do. Alex pouted and then put the toy down on the shelf. I shook my head as I started walking up the aisle again.

I stopped walking realizing he wasn't following behind me.

"Alex," I called to him. He didn't answer so I turned around to make sure he was still there. He was standing there with tears in his eyes.

Alex was going to win an Academy Award one day, I was sure of it.

"Can I please have the toy, Mommy? I promise to be good," he said pushing his little lip out as he looked at me. If I was either of his grandmothers, I probably would have fallen for it, but I was his mother and I knew better.

"You can have a new toy, if you give away five toys you have at home," I replied and his eyes went large.

"Five!" he yelled holding up five fingers. I tried not to laugh as he tried to decide what he was going to do. Alex had enough toys to fill a Toys-R-Us store all by himself. I was not getting ready to add another toy that he would forget about in a few days.

"That's the deal, bud, you can have one toy if you give up five," I told him with my hands on my hips.

He looked at the toy on the shelf for a little while and then said, "Sorry toy, you can't come home with me and Mommy." I laughed as I watched him walk toward me. I kissed the top of his head when he reached me.

"Good choice, bud," I told him as we finished shopping.

"Mommy, why do we go food shopping every Wed-nes-day after school," he said pronouncing Wednesday slowly to make sure he said it correctly.

"Because it's not as crowded since it's the middle of the week," I answered turning up an aisle.

"Oh," he answered holding on to the side of the cart. "Can we go to Chucky Cheese on Wed-nes-day since it's the middle of the week?" he asked me. I laughed smiling at him.

"Nice try, bud, but no," I answered.

"Darn it," he said slapping his leg like he often saw my father do when he said damn it.

"Why don't you tell me about school, what did you do today?" I asked him.

"I ate a cookie," he answered smiling up at me. "It was good, too, Mommy; it tasted better than yours," he continued earning a few giggles from the people in the aisle with us.

"Gee, thanks, bud," I replied sarcastically.

"You're welcome," he replied obviously not understanding sarcasm. "Peter got in trouble today cause he told Taylor that he was a…" he paused not finishing his story. Peter was currently Alex's best friend.

"He told Taylor what?" I asked him.

"I can't say it, it's a bad word," he replied. I nodded not bothering to push further to find out. I was sure Peter's mother Kate was going to tell me when the boys had their play date on Friday.

Once I was ready to check out we headed for the cash registers. Alex especially liked this part because he enjoyed watching the cashier's scan the stuff and watching the numbers appear.

Then he saw it…

"Mommy! They have Wreck-it-Ralph!" Alex yelled and then before I could stop him he was running toward wherever he saw the movie.

"Alex! Stop running!" I yelled just as I watched him run into someone causing himself to fall to the floor and for the guy to drop everything he had in his hand. Leaving my cart, I rushed over to Alex trying to make sure he wasn't hurt by anything.

"Are you okay?" I asked checking his head, arms and then his hands.

"Yes," he answered sounding a little shaken up. I relaxed helping Alex up and turning to the guy he had run into. I groaned realizing that it was my ex Michael.

"Hey Bella," he said grinning at me.

"Hi," I answered dryly. He turned his attention to Alex.

"You okay, Alex?" he asked. Quickly, Alex stepped behind me trying to hide from Michael. I didn't blame him.

Michael laughed as he looked back at me.

"I guess he's still scared of me," he said grinning as if I was going to find something funny. I didn't bother responding to what he said.

"Have a nice life, Michael," I replied and then turned to walk away. Then I felt his grip on my arm as he yanked me around to face him again. I felt Alex gripping my shirt as he stood behind me.

"That's all you have to say to me! After what your fucking dad, brother-in-law and that fucking faggot did to me, all you have to say is have a nice life!" he yelled at me causing a bigger show.

"Let me the hell go, now," I sneered at him. I was trying to keep in mind that Alex was standing right behind me and that I couldn't whoop Michael's ass like I wanted.

"Bella, you never even asked me my side. I only…"

"…I don't care – now let me go," I yelled trying to pull my arm away from him.

"I'm pretty sure I just heard the lady tell you to let her go," I heard a familiar voice say. I turned around and saw Emmett standing behind me.

"We were just talking," Michael said.

"I don't think so; now let her go before I make you," Emmett barked stepping closer to us. Michael let me go and then he rolled his eyes.

"You work for her daddy, too, uh?" Michael said pointing to the Firefighter logo on Emmett's shirt. "New York Fire Department fights more than fires," he continued.

"Keep talking and I'll show you what else we fight," Emmett snapped at him.

"I should have never asked your ass out; you weren't worth the trouble," he said and then he turned and walked away. I wanted to be pissed but I couldn't. Right now I need to make sure that Alex wasn't completely freaking the hell out.

Dropping to my knees so that I was eye level with Alex I cupped his little face in my hand.

"You okay?" I asked. He nodded looking past me. I turned watching Michael as he looked back at us and winked. Rolling my eyes I turned back to Alex.

"Don't worry about him. Remember what I told you?"

"That I don't have to see him ever again," Alex answered. I smiled nodding.

"Exactly, now how about we get these groceries home and then have some ice cream," I said with a smile on my face. A grin came across his face as he nodded in excitement. I stood back up looking at Emmett.

"Thanks for that," I said nodding in the direction Michael just walked.

"Sure, no problem. I'm just your friendly neighborhood…"

"Spiderman!" Alex yelled causing us to laugh.

"Sure, Joe Boxer, if you say so."

"Who's Joe Boxer?" Alex asked. Emmett went to explain and I shook my head. He would have been standing here forever trying to explain.

"He was a good boxer like you," Emmett simply answered. Alex grinned looking from Emmett to me.

"I'm a boxer, Mommy."

"You sure are – come on let's get out of here," I said walking back over to my abandoned cart. Now, maybe for anyone else all of their things would have still been in the cart, but nope not me.

Not in the mood to go back and grab the things that were taken from my cart I just got in line, Emmett right behind me. I paid for our things and Emmett walked me out to my car. I got Alex and the groceries into the car and then turned to Emmett.

"Could you not tell Jake and Charlie what happened today?" I asked knowing if they found out they would go hunt Michael down and my mother and Tyler would be bailing them out of jail this time.

"Sure, I won't tell them anything," he answered. I smiled happy to hear it.

"Thanks again."

"That's what neighbors are for, plus, I owed you one," he replied winking at me. I laughed shaking my head.

"Have a goodnight, Emmett," I said getting into my car.

"You, too, Bella. Be safe," he told me. I nodded shutting the door behind me. I watched him in my rearview mirror as I pulled off. I saw him pull out his phone and place it to his ear.

So much for him not telling Jake and Charlie.

The entire way home Alex sung some ice cream song he made up. By the time I pulled into my driveway I was singing it with him. We climbed out of the car just as I heard someone screaming my name.

I turned around seeing Paul and Edward jogging over to me.

"Um, hey guys, what's up?" I asked confused.

"We just came over to help you take your groceries in," Paul said with a smile. I looked at him and then Edward with a brow raised in question.

"Emmett called," Edward said. My mouth made the O shape now understanding.

"You guys don't have to help. I mean, we'll be okay," I said opening the passenger door and taking Alex out.

"Just get over it now, Bella. We're helping," Paul said waiting for me to pop the trunk.

"Hi Paw! Hi Edwood!" Alex said getting out of the car.

"What's up little man, you have a good day at school?" Edward asked him giving Alex a fist bump.

"Yup, I ate a cookie that tasted better than Mommy's cookies," he answered causing Paul and Edward to laugh.

"I'm a cookie man myself, too, Alex," Paul said coming over and holding about three bags. He shifted them shaking Alex's hand. "Can you show me inside little dude so I know where to put these," Paul said. Alex nodded, pulling the keys from my hand and running toward the house.

"We better follow them, I have to turn the alarm off," I said. Edward nodded but didn't move. "Edward…"

"Are you okay?" he asked me.

"Yes, I'm fine," I answered not sure what he was talking about. He nodded not looking convinced. He walked to the back of my car and grabbed a few bags himself. Alex got the door open after about three tries. He really liked using the key himself.

I turned the alarm off and Paul and Edward headed toward the kitchen. When I tried to help them unpack the car, they gave me a look that said I better not. I couldn't understand why they were acting like this.

I was starting to get the feeling that Emmett told them about what happened at Target.

Unpacking the bags as Paul and Edward brought them into the house, I watched as Alex opened up his box of animal crackers. He poured them all on the table and then started going through them.

"What are you doing, Alex?"

"The box said do not eat if the seal is broken, so I'm looking for the seal," he answered still looking through the animal crackers. I couldn't help but laugh as I watched him.

"That's the last of it, Bella," Edward said coming into my kitchen and putting the bags down.

"Thanks, guys. You really didn't have to do that," I told them.

"That's what neighbors are for. If you need anything else, just let us know," Paul said smiling at me. "I have to get ready for my shift tonight, little dude, maybe you can bring home some of those cookies you had at school and share them with me next time," Paul said.

Alex smiled looking up at Paul.

"Okay, I save some just for you," he said. Paul shook Alex's hand, winked at me and slapped his hand on Edward's shoulder. Edward looked at him and I swear they were having some silent conversation.

Paul nodded and then left the house.

"Don't you have a shift tonight?" I asked Edward as I went back to unpacking my groceries.

"No. I worked last night into this morning. I just got off a few hours ago, actually," he answered. I nodded realizing that I knew that already.

"You're probably tired, I'm surprised you're not sleeping," I said cutting my eyes at him. He didn't reply or even make any facial reply. He turned to Alex sitting down next to him.

"What're you up to, little man?" he asked and Alex explained what he was doing. Edward laughed, but offered to help Alex look for the seal. I smiled shaking my head as I continued to unpack my groceries.

"Alex, why don't you clean up those animal crackers, and then head upstairs and feed Rafael while I get started on dinner," I said once I finished unpacking.

"Okay," he said quickly cleaning up the animal crackers as Edward helped him. He jumped up from his seat and then started to leave the kitchen. Then he stopped turning around and looking at Edward. "Are you staying for dinner, Edwood?"

"Um, I don't know…"

"I tink you should stay; I like when you hang out wit me and Mommy," Alex said, then he turned and ran out of the kitchen. Edward was smiling as he watched Alex leave the kitchen. Then he turned to me and his smile fell.

"You want to tell me about what happened?" he asked me.

"There's nothing to tell," I replied folding my arms over my chest. I didn't want to talk about my run-in with Mike. He nodded standing up from his seat and walking over to me.

"Fine, we don't have to talk about it, but you need to understand something, Bella," he said lifting my face so that I was looking up at him. "I care about you, Bella. You and Alex. If that guy comes anywhere near either of you again, I'm going to break his legs," he said catching me off guard.

"Edward…"

"…I'm serious, Bella. The two of you are important to me," he said cutting me off as he stepped closer to me. I felt myself step back against the counter as I looked up at him. He was always so intense and honest.

It was everything I've wanted, and yet completely unnerving because it was new. I inhaled a deep breath running my tongue along my lips. "I care about you, too," I admitted. A grin formed on his handsome face as he stepped even closer to me. I could feel the heat from his body, each breath he exhaled and even hearing his heart beating in his chest.

Holding my chin in his hand he brushed his thumb over my lip. Parting my lips I sucked his thumb into my mouth. He groaned loudly as his eyes seemed to darken. "Kiss me," I breathed, and in a flash, his lips were on mine. I moaned kissing him back. Needing him closer I fisted his hair in my hand. He started kissing me more passionately and my heart started to pound in my chest. He sucked my lip into his mouth and then used his tongue to trace around my lips.

"Uh... why you licking my mommy, Edwood?" we suddenly heard Alex ask. Quickly, we pulled apart and looked at the little monster standing there with his arms crossed over his chest while tapping his foot.

"Um…"

"Did she taste good?" Alex asked with his little brow lifted at Edward.

"Um…"

"Can you not talk no more, Edwood?" Alex asked looking actually concerned. I should have told Alex to cut it out, but I was too busy trying not to laugh at the look on Edward's face. "Mommy, I think Edwood forgot how to talk," Alex said looking over at me now.

"Alex, honey, why don't you go watch TV while I finish making dinner, okay," I said with a grin on my face.

"Is Edwood staying for dinner?" he asked looking from me to Edward. I looked at Edward also seeing that he still looked uncomfortable from being busted by Alex.

"I don't know, Edward, would you like to stay for dinner?" I asked hoping he would say yes. He looked over at me and then looked back at Alex.

"Yeah, I would like to stay for dinner. If the man of the house doesn't mind," he said grinning at Alex. A huge grin spread across Alex's face instantly.

"Who da man of the house?" he asked.

"You are little man," Edward answered running his hand over the top of Alex's head. I waited for Alex to get upset about Edward touching his head but he didn't.

"Really! Mommy, I da man of the house!" Alex shouted looking at me. I laughed pulling him into a hug.

"Yeah, I know, bud. Now, am I putting an extra place setting at the table?" I asked him. He looked at me with a confused expression on his face, obviously not understanding my question. "Is Edward staying to have dinner with us?" I asked rephrasing my question.

"Yeah! Then he can help us make ice cream sundaes for dessert!" he shouted jumping up and down. Edward and I both laughed as Alex cheered his excitement about having Edward stay for dinner.

"Okay, bud, go watch TV and I'll call you when dinner is done," I told him.

"Okay," he said running out of the room and leaving Edward and I alone. I smiled looking up at Edward.

"I had no idea what to say to him when he asked why I was licking you," Edward said running his fingers through his hair as he looked at me. I laughed turning back to the counter to prepare dinner.

"Well, you didn't answer his second question," I teased starting to prep the chicken. I felt him step close behind me. I could feel his breath on my neck.

"What question would that be?" he asked placing both his hands on my hips.

"Did I taste good?" I whispered to him. He laughed against my neck gripping my waist and pulling me back against his body.

"You tasted amazing, and I know the rest of you taste just as fucking delicious," he whispered against my ear. I felt my entire body shudder in response.

"Edwood, come play race cars with me!" Alex yelled from the living room. Edward placed a kiss just behind my ear.

"I gotta go, babe, duty calls," he said and then like that he was gone. I couldn't bring myself to be upset about Edward leaving me in the kitchen. Not when the alternative was him spending time with my son.

I continued to make dinner and laughed at the sound effects coming from my living room. Every time Alex laughed a huge smile would spread across my face. It felt right, natural having Edward here.

The house phone started to ring and I answered it knowing it was probably Sam calling like he did every night.

"Hello."

"Hey, sissy, what are you doing?" Alice's voice asked coming through the receiver of the phone.

"Cooking dinner – what's up?"

"The sales of the magazine last month came in, and we sold over two hundred thousand more than we did last month."

"Shit, are you serious!" I shouted in excitement. The magazine was a little more than five years old, but in the fashion industry that was amazing with competitors such as Vogue. The first three years Alice almost tossed in the towel, it was so hard. We've been picking up lately, and this news about our sales increase was amazing.

"You owe me a dollar Mommy!" Alex yelled from living room. "Never mind!" he yelled back, and I was sure once again Edward paid for me.

"Yes, Gianna just called me, and to make things even fucking better, Rihanna was just spotted with a copy of the magazine, and when asked about it she said she loved it! Do you know what this means?!" she squealed into the phone.

"That Rihanna loves the magazine?" I inquired.

"Our sales are going to skyrocket after this! Tell me you have the cover photo ready for next month's issue."

"I'll have it in the morning; right now I am getting ready to feed your nephew."

"Okay, and I know you're going to roll your eyes when I say this, but thank you so much for investing in my dream. You are the best sister in the world," she said, and I did exactly what she said I would do. I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah, yeah, I love you, too. Now go get rid of some of that energy by finding your husband and doing some naughty things to him."

"Hmm... good idea, I just need to get Maria feed and to bed. Oh, and tell Edward I said hi, I know he's there," she said giggling before hanging up. I laughed shaking my head as I ended the call. I finished making dinner and then set the table for the three of us.

I walked toward the living room to let them know dinner was ready and stopped when I heard Edward ask Alex how he felt about seeing him kiss me.

"I dunno... it's sort of gross but I guess mommy likes it," Alex answered. I covered my mouth trying not to laugh. Edward's hard laugh filled the room.

"Do you mind that I like kissing your mom?" Edward asked.

"No, Mommy gives the best hugs and kisses," Alex agreed. "I just happy she don't kiss me like she kiss you—dat's gross. Why do grownups kiss like dat, Edwood?" Alex asked. I smiled knowing Edward's face was probably priceless right now as he tried to decide how he was going answer that question.

"Um... it's just something adults do, you'll understand when you're older…"

"…dat's what Mommy says when she doesn't want to tell me," Alex replied. I swear he was the smartest kid on the planet.

"I really like your mom, Alex."

"She like you, too, I heard her tell Aunt Ali that you have a nice butt," he continued and I almost died as Edward started laughing.

"I like hanging out with you, too, Alex. You're a cool little man," Edward said thankfully changing the subject.

"I tink you're cool, too, Edwood," Alex replied. Smiling, I walked away from the entrance way and walked back into the kitchen to get the food.

"Dinner!" I shouted placing the food on the table in the dining room.

"About time, I starving!" I heard Alex say. I turned and smiled seeing him up on Edward's shoulders as they came into the dining room. He winked at me placing Alex down into his booster seat at the table.

"It smells good in here," he said smiling at me.

"Mommy is the bestest cook ever," Alex informed Edward.

"Unless it's cookies, then he thinks Ms. Stanley makes better cookies than me," I teased and he giggled. Edward and I sat down and fixed our plates. I couldn't resist smiling when he made Alex's plate for me.

Sitting at the table we talked about our day. Thankfully, Alex didn't bring up our run-in with Mike. After dinner Edward helped me put what was left over away, and despite me telling him he didn't have to, he helped me wash dishes.

"I was thinking this Friday we could finally go to the movies," Edward said from next to me as he dried the plate I just passed to him.

"You don't have…"

"…I want to. Between my job, your job and Alex's schedule, we haven't been able to keep the original date plan we made weeks ago. You're off this Friday, I'm off and Alex doesn't have school," he said and I could tell he had given a lot of thought to this.

"Okay, the movies, anything else?"

"Whatever you want to do," he said smirking at me.

"As long as we're together I'll be happy," I answered looking at him under my lashes. He leaned over toward me and placed a kiss on my lips.

"Will I get to have the two of you all day Friday?" he whispered against my lips.

"I think that could be easily arranged," I whispered back smiling up at him. "Maybe the three of us can go miniature golfing on Friday – Alex hasn't been yet," I continued inhaling his smell.

"Dat would be so cool!" Alex yelled getting our attention. We pulled apart and smiled looking at him.

"Bud, why don't you get the toppings we need for the ice cream sundaes," I told him.

"Okay, Mommy," he said pulling out the stool and climbing up on top of it. I had already made sure everything we would need was already on the counter for him to take to the dining room.

Edward and I finished washing dishes and then grabbed the bowls. We all made our sundaes, Alex putting every topping on his. We sat in the living room eating the ice cream while watching the Fairly Odd Parents. Alex could watch this show for hours and never get tired of it.

"Ah! My brain froze!" Alex suddenly screamed. I tried not to laugh as I watched him shake his head.

"His brain froze?" Edward whispered over to me.

"He means he has a brain freeze," I answered. Edward laughed nodding in understanding.

"Mommy, I need you to melt it," Alex pouted. Smiling I leaned over and placed kisses all over his head. My son swore my kisses could heal anything.

"All better?" I asked looking at him.

"Yup," he said nodding with a smile on his face. Once we finished eating the ice cream, I told Alex it was time to take his bath. He pouted but went upstairs to get ready. I turned looking at Edward before I followed him upstairs.

"You aren't going to leave are you?" I asked hoping he said no.

"Not if you don't want me to."

"I don't want you to."

"Then I'm staying."

"Good, I'll be right back," I said just before going upstairs. I got Alex into the tub and all washed up. Once I had him in bed he asked for Edward to come and tell him goodnight. Surprised, I called Edward upstairs. He came into the room and upon Alex's request he stayed in the room as I read Alex his bedtime story.

After I finished I tucked him in and placed a kiss on his forehead.

"Sleep tight, bud. I love you," I whispered into his ear.

"I love you, too, Mommy," he said snuggling into his blanket. Edward and I started to leave his room when Alex called Edward's name.

"What's up little man?" Edward asked turning back to him.

"I love you, too," Alex said. I couldn't help the smile that spread on my face as well as the worry in my heart. If this didn't work, I wasn't the only one who would be getting hurt. I looked at Edward and saw the shocked smile on his face. I was just getting ready to tell him that he didn't have to say it back when he said.

"I love you, too, Alex."

I love you too Alex! I think everyone does!
