Chapter 40
Creating a baby, Kensi had decided, was worth the struggles of pregnancy. Morning sickness turned out to be not so confined to mornings, most of the time she was emotional, and a lot of her favorite snacks had lost their appeal. As she furthered into her pregnancy, her back was in a constant state of pain, and she had lost sight of her feet.
Leo often assured her that, while she couldn't actually see them, her feet were indeed still there.
At first Kensi hated the constant attention; people wanting to touch her belly, try to feel the baby kick. She hated at the beginning when she could just tell that when strangers walked by they were trying to discern if Kensi was having a baby, or just fat.
A lot of times she just felt fat.
But then the first time she felt the baby move she cried. Of course Kensi knew that there was a baby inside of her, growing more every day; yet, feeling it actually move, and feeling it kick, somehow made it even more real. After that, she didn't just feel fat anymore. Leo had looked at her in awe the first time he'd felt the baby kick, and told her that getting a baby was the most awesome thing ever, and he didn't even mind if it was a girl.
With each new day Kensi found herself more and more excited about the baby; she couldn't resist browsing around the baby clothes section of stores, smiling at the cute little shoes. They'd started buying packs of diapers, some bottles here and there, and smaller things before they found out the sex of the baby.
As excited as Kensi was, nothing topped how excited Deeks was about this baby. Any time someone mentioned it, a proud grin grew on his face. She caught him gazing at her lovingly multiple times a day. She was a bit self-conscious about it at first, but then she realized he thought she was even more beautiful with her "pregnant glow" and his gaze made her feel amazing.
Deeks had built a new crib, with the help of Sam and Callen, and was greatly anticipating finding out the sex of the baby so he could decorate the baby's room. Kensi thought it was adorable how excited he was; his and Leo's new favorite topic was the baby. They often discussed whether the baby would be a boy or a girl. Kensi thought her husband would burst with anticipation the day they went to find out.
"Why is it so cold in here?" Deeks whined as they waited for the doctor to come into the room.
Kensi snorted. "You're just a big baby."
"And you're having my baby, so you must not hate me too much." Deeks grinned.
She rolled her eyes but didn't reply, setting her hand on top of her bump instead. Kensi found that her hand constantly drifted to it, and so did Deeks's. Sometimes, when they were all watching TV, Leo's hand would rest on top of the bump as he explained what Spongebob was up to, since the baby couldn't see the TV. Which he thought was unreasonably unfair.
Suddenly, a cellphone went off, and Deeks's eyebrows furrowed. "No." He shook his head, pulling the phone out. "Deeks." He grumbled into the phone. The man went silent for a moment, but then he started shaking his head. "No, Hetty this isn't… but we're at the doctor's… Hetty this is one of the most important days of my life you can't just… alright. Yes ma'am." Deeks huffed angrily.
"Something wrong?" Kensi asked.
Deeks smiled a bit at the concern in her voice. "Apparently we got a lead on that case. Of course it had to be today, we haven't gotten anything in three days but today is when I have to be at work. Sam and Callen are already out there, they need me there."
"Well I'm sure they never said that." Kensi snorted.
Deeks rested his forehead against hers. "But I don't wanna leave you alone here. I wanted to be here for this." He whispered.
Emotional as she now was, tears filled Kensi's eyes. "It's okay. You'll still get to find out today, just in a little while, alright? I'll be fine."
"I'm so sorry." He insisted.
"Deeks, it's not like you're intentionally choosing not to be here. I know you would like nothing more than to stick around and find out with me. It's okay; I'll tell the baby that its Daddy is off being a superhero." Kensi smiled.
His deep sigh and sad eyes told Kensi everything she needed to know; he desperately wanted to make sure she knew that he was here for her, and that he wanted to experience this with her. She smiled at him again, shoving his chest lightly. "Go. Callen and Sam need you."
"You and the baby need me too." Deeks objected.
"Yes, but at the moment Mommy's got it under control."
He couldn't help but grin at that, and Kensi sat up proudly. "Text me when you find out." He told her.
She shook her head. She wouldn't risk distracting Deeks in the field. "Nope. You'll find out when you come home."
Deeks groaned, pressing a kiss to her lips before backing towards the door. "You're one mean Momma, you know that? This is cruel and unusual punishment." He chuckled.
"You'll live." Kensi rolled her eyes.
"Love you, baby." He smiled.
"Love you too." Kensi replied.
Deeks smirked. "Well, I meant the actual baby. But I love you too, Fern." He winked, and left the room.
Deeks couldn't get home fast enough. Normally, he didn't need more incentive to get home, between getting to see Leo, and spending time with Kensi outside of OPS, he was always ready to get there. But today, with not getting to be there when Kensi found out the sex of the baby, Deeks was ready to break every traffic law to get home.
The case they were working kept him at OPS later than he would've liked, but he finally got home that evening. He rushed into the house, a grin firmly in place. "Kensi! Kensalina! Baby!" He yelled, rushing into the living room.
Leo was sitting next to Kensi on their couch, smiling happily. "Hi Daddy!" He exclaimed when he saw the man.
"Hey buddy! Hi wifey." Deeks smiled, kissing Kensi's cheek and taking a spot next to Leo. "Okay, it's been driving me nuts all day. And since you decided to ignore my messages and make me wait, please end my suspense now."
"Oh you mean all twenty of the texts you sent?" Kensi rolled her eyes.
"Silly Daddy." Leo giggled.
"Please just tell me." Deeks begged.
Kensi smiled and picked up a small box from the coffee table; Deeks's eyebrows rose, he hadn't even noticed it when he walked in. "Open it." She smiled.
Deeks hurriedly tried to rip the box open, but found she had practically sealed it shut. "Very funny, Fern."
"Yeah Fern!" The small boy laughed again.
Frustrated, Deeks grabbed his keys and ripped through all the tape Kensi had used to seal the box. "Go Daddy, go!" Leo squealed, clapping his hands.
Inside, Deeks found a tiny pink onesie that read "Daddy's Little Princess" on it. A grin grew on his face as tears filled his eyes. "A girl." He whispered.
"Are you happy?" Kensi asked nervously.
He couldn't help but laugh at that. "Happy? Kens, I… a little girl." He grinned, pulling her closer to kiss her.
"Gwoss." Leo scrunched up his nose.
"She's gonna look just like you, I know it. And probably completely tough and awesome like you God help me." Deeks laughed.
"Hey! What does that mean?" Kensi laughed.
"That means she'll be beautiful, and all the boys will wanna date her!" Deeks said, realizing that he'd have to be that dad that cleaned his gun in the living room before she went on a date.
"Oh, gosh Deeks. You cannot possibly be worried about her dating already." Kensi snorted.
"It is the right of every father to worry about his daughter dating!" He objected, but couldn't keep the smile off his face.
"So the baby's a girlie?" Leo asked.
"Yeah, buddy. It's a girl. That means you'll have a little sister." Kensi explained.
"And you'll have to watch out for her, be her big brother." Deeks added.
"Like a superhero?" The boy inquired.
His parents couldn't help but laugh. "Sure."
"Awesome! Leo exclaimed, but then his nose scrunched up again. "But does that mean her room has to be pink?"
"We haven't decided what color to paint her room yet. What color do you think she would like?" Deeks asked.
"Blue." Leo said decidedly.
"We can't paint her room blue!" Kensi laughed.
"Kensi, are you insisting upon keeping gendered colors? Isn't it perfectly okay for her to like the color blue?" Deeks grinned.
"Deeks, shut up. Of course. But… what about yellow? That's a nice, soft color for a baby." She suggested.
"I like yewow." Leo said, looking up at his dad.
"Yellow it is then." Deeks smiled.
"I think she'll love it." Replied Kensi.
"I love not having to refer to the baby as an it. Makes it feel like you're having an alien." The man teased.
"A a-en?" Leo asked, obviously confused.
"Look what you've done!" Kensi laughed. "He was just kidding, Leo."
"That would be cool dough." Leo told her.
As Deeks burst out laughing, Kensi couldn't help but think that she wouldn't mind if the baby wasn't exactly like her, but a little like Deeks and Leo too.
i hope you guys liked the chapter! let me know what you think! Sorry it was so short!
