Chapter Eleven

The daleks flew Rose and the Doctor back to the T.A.R.D.I.S. By the time they got there, Rose was asleep.

"What is wrong with her?" Becky asked.

"Oh, she's asleep," the Doctor explained. "You see, it's a way for humans to rest and regain energy. However, what you have to understand is that humans are vulnerable when they are asleep, so we should bring her into the T.A.R.D.I.S. She'll be safe enough there."

The Doctor gently picked Rose up and stepped through the T.A.R.D.I.S. doors. The daleks were reluctant to follow.

"Well, come on then," the Doctor urged.

"Wait! You are actually letting us into the T.A.R.D.I.S.?" Becky asked disbelievingly.

"Yes," the Doctor answered. "I figured… weeeell, Rose was right: you are very unique daleks and you really were opposed to the Cult of Skaro and the others. After all, you two tried to shoot Dalek Caan. You are really rather nice, you are!"

Maddy and Becky laughed joyously as they drove slowly into the T.A.R.D.I.S.

"I bet we are the first daleks to enter the T.A.R.D.I.S. ever!" Becky squealed.

The daleks were taken aback as they saw the true glory of the T.A.R.D.I.S. It looked so huge and majestic, and the technology was, to the young daleks, undiscovered and new. They were so astounded that they remained stationary for a long moment, just swivelling their eyestalks to take in the wonders all around them.

"Whoa, this is like a completely separate dimension!" Becky said, still stunned by the beauty.

"All contained in an exterior that is much smaller!" added Maddy.

Through the night, the daleks explored the T.A.R.D.I.S. The Doctor felt obliged to go with them in case they started shooting anything, to keep them palpating anything with their plungers, and to explain the purposes of everything they saw.

Eventually, Rose woke up.

Throughout the following day, the Doctor and Rose were behaving mysteriously. They whispered to one another a lot, not including the daleks in most of their conversations. The daleks wanted to know why in case the two humanoids were having second thoughts about befriending them. They found the Doctor and Rose in the console room. The Doctor was dancing around the console, flipping switches, and the T.A.R.D.I.S. lurched, its central column pulsing. Becky and Maddy realized with excitement that they were travelling. But Maddy felt a sense of dread. "Doctor," she asked, "you and Rose have been trying to conceal something from us all day. Where are you taking us? You're not going to take us back to Skaro, are you?" she added with fear.

The Doctor flipped a lever that caused the T.A.R.D.I.S. to remain in the time vortex. "We travel around, Rose and I, visiting different planets, saving civilizations… you know, the stuff of legend! I don't know how they would take to seeing daleks. You lot are notorious for… er… being rather… unfriendly. I'm afraid until we know how to… well, you'll have to stay here. Please don't plunge or shoot anything," the Doctor ordered.

"Rude, Doctor!" Rose admonished. She turned her attention to the daleks. "We won't drop you off. I'm sorry we've been talking behind your backs. That was rude, too. We want you to travel with us, but it's like the Doctor says, we don't know how people will react. Look, I have to change my clothes, you know, to fit in with this planet's population better. Why don't you help me out? You could try a few things on, too! I'm sure the T.A.R.D.I.S. has something that will fit."

"Rose, I hardly think the T.A.R.D.I.S.-ˮ

"Shut it, you! Don't listen to him! You'll help us out, won't you Old Girl?" she stroked a coral strut. "C'mon you two!" Leaving the Doctor leaning against the console dumbfounded, Rose led the daleks to a room with clothing and mirrors. The daleks giggled nervously, but trusted Rose and followed her. They were astonished by all the pieces of cloth of different colours and textures that lined the walls.

"What do we do, Rose?" Becky asked.

"Well, the T.A.R.D.I.S. usually shows me where there are things in my size that are appropriate for whatever planet we go to. The Doctor has collected all kinds from all over the galaxy, and I think that the Old Girl even creates some things for me when I need it."

"Clothes? Us wearing… pieces of… fabric? What for?" Maddy was confused.

"I guess us humans wear them to cover our bodies… it isn't usually considered polite not to wear clothes."

"But we have our outer shells… our casings. They protect us."

"Well maybe… if you wore clothes over your… er, casings, it would let folks know that you were trying to fit in. Look, why don't you just look around and see if there's something that you like: a colour or fabric. Go on then! Don't be shy."

Becky eagerly rushed forward, "Ooooh, I like this colour! And it sparkles. It looks like the stars."

"Now we're getting somewhere! What about you, Maddy? C'mon. There must be something you like, too."

Maddy apprehensively rolled forward. Rose grinned in encouragement.

An hour later, the two daleks drove out into the console room, following Rose who was dressed in a dark red gown, which Becky thought shimmered like a nebula. The Doctor grinned at the three of them. "Okay! Wow! That's brilliant! You all look brilliant! Ha!"

"So do you think they could join us, Doctor?" Rose beamed back at him.

"Oh, ho, yes! I think that it is certainly worth a shot. What do you say you two?" he addressed the Daleks.

"Do you think we look alright?" Maddy sounded concerned.

"Let's see: Maddy, you're wearing a gorgeous blue gown," he looked to Rose for support, continuing when she nodded her approval, "and that necklace… um, uh… complements it so well! Very elegant. And Becky, that frilly pink tutu is just so you. The bow you've chosen is very pretty. Cute! Ugggh, did I just say 'cute'? Forget that I said that. Not that you're not it's just… there must be a better word…ˮ

"Tee-hee-hee! We are so… fashionable!" Becky tittered.

"That's the word," the Doctor stuck his finger in the air triumphantly.

"You know, actually we do look nice," Maddy agreed with her sister.

They all stepped through the T.A.R.D.I.S. doors and from that day on, Maddy and Becky were not known as the rogues, but as 'the fashionable daleks'. They traveled with the Doctor and Rose and were not only accepted, but loved. They had finally found a home.
