Chapter 20 - Happily Ever After. . . For Now

Three nights later, Alex and Jo lay in bed, his fingers trailing up and down her arm as they came down from the heights of lovemaking. He leaned in, nuzzling her neck and scattering a few kisses along her skin before closing his eyes for a moment. "Mmmm."

"Tell me about it," Jo giggled, placing a kiss to his chest before pressing her cheek over his heart and snuggling against him.

Alex took the opportunity to tangle his hand in her hair, watching the brown strands move between his fingers. "You're so beautiful," he murmured.

The young woman looked to him with a teasing smirk on her lips. "You're just in the afterglow."

The doctor chuckled in return before holding her against him. He allowed his eyelids to droop closed as he listened to the rain beating down on his roof. "Have you signed up for next semester yet?" he asked as his eyes remained closed.

Jo bit her lip. "No, not yet..." She let the sentence drop as her stomach lurched. Classes were the last thing on her mind. It was clear that everything was about to change, including her career choice. She was already late to the game, but now she'd have another nine month delay, and then the young woman would want to spend at least the first year with her baby. A two year delay pushed the dream of being a surgeon further from her reach.

"You okay?" Alex asked, looking down to her.

The brunette shrugged. "I think I'm going to take a break for a little while. You know, adjust to our new life with Sarah. But I haven't decided yet," she tacked on quickly. The former nanny wasn't lying-things were going to be different now. Not too different because she was familiar with Alex's niece, but...different for other reasons. Reasons that she wasn't sure she could tell Alex about now.

Jo wanted to tell the man she loved the very moment she suspected she was pregnant, but she forced herself to wait for a missed period, then wait again for a confirmed test. After the urine test turned up positive, the young woman took a blood test. As expected, it came back positive as well. Jo wanted to run home and tell Alex immediately, the same time, she was terrified.

Things seemed to move quickly for them. After denying their attraction to one another for months, a simple kiss turned heated and thrust the two into a very hot, passionate relationship. In a matter of days they were making love. In a matter of weeks, she had moved into his room. And now, in a matter of months, she was pregnant. Jo was pregnant with Alex's child. The woman was thrilled, but she wasn't sure how her partner would feel; after all, the doctor had recently become a father. How would he feel knowing that he was going to father another child so quickly?

"Our life is perfect," Alex smiled and leaned in, kissing her forehead.

"Perfect?" Jo asked, a wave of nausea moving through her. He thought their life was perfect with Sarah and Sarah only?

"Well, almost perfect."

"What do you mean?" she asked, putting her cheek to his chest to hide her worry.

The pediatrician took a slow, deep breath. He'd gone over this a million times in his mind; he'd come up with a million different ways to ask the question. He'd even searched the internet for romantic proposal ideas, but while all of those scenarios were amazing, they weren't...them. Alex had found the perfect woman, a woman that didn't require the huge, romantic gestures. A woman who didn't throw a fit if he didn't bring her a diamond once a week. He'd managed to find a partner, a true partner. A woman who loved him and was there for him when he needed her. Alex had found his mate. After clearing his throat, the man's voice wavered. "I think we should get married."

Jo sucked in her breath as her eyes widened. "Married?" she asked, pushing herself into a sitting position, pulling the sheet over her body.

"Yes, I want you to marry me. I want to be your husband, and I want you to be my wife." Alex internally cursed himself for being so blunt. What kind of proposal was that?

The brunette swallowed the large lump in her throat. "Are-Are you serious?" she whispered.

Alex reached his arm to the table beside his bed, tugging open the drawer and retrieving a black velvet ring box. "I bought this the day before Amber came back," he spoke as he pushed himself into a sitting position and faced her. "I've wanted you to be a permanent part of my life for a while now, but...I didn't want to go too fast. I didn't want to freak you out. I want you in my life forever, Jo. I love you, and I will always love you. Will you marry me?"

Jo blinked back tears as he opened the box. Such sweet, heartfelt words from a man she had fallen head over heels in love with, a man who could bring her to tears with a few words. Alex didn't need a million rose petals and five million candles-he only had to speak from his heart. "I love you," she whispered.

Alex gave her a nervous grin. "That's great, Jo, but are you going to marry me or not?"

The woman laughed through her tears and nodded. "Yes, I'll marry you."

He closed the short distance between them, kissing her passionately before sliding the ring onto the fourth finger of her left hand. "We can get married this summer, after your semester is over."

Jo smiled softly at him-he was doing everything in his power to fit things around her schedule. Her classes. Her desire to pursure a career as a surgeon. "I'm seriously considering taking a break from my classes."

"Why?" he asked, his brows knitting with concern.

The brunette shrugged. "I'm only a year away from thirty, Alex, and I'm still only doing my pre-requisites. By the time I actually became an intern, I'd be pushing forty. That's way too late to the game."

"It's never too late," the doctor countered. "Bailey's husband is in his mid-forties, and he just started his intern year. You'll do fine."

"What about student loans?" she reminded him. "I'll be in debt until my fifties!"

"I can take care of all of that," he said softly. "I want you to succeed, Jo."

The brunette glanced away before taking a deep breath. "Alex, I'm pregnant." Boy, talk about chunking a grenade! The woman just threw the words out there with no form of class or tact; she didn't prepare the man that his entire life was about to change. Their entire relationship was about to change-they were no longer simply dating or living together. They weren't a soon-to-be married couple who would have children in a few years. No, they were future parents. A part of her and a part of him was forming within Jo as she sat before him; she was a mother now.

Alex's eyes dropped to her stomach. "You're pregnant?" he asked quietly.

The woman groaned inwardly. He was questioning her. "Yes," she confirmed.

"Are you sure?"

Jo dropped her gaze and nodded. "Yes, I took an over the counter test, and I had a blood test. I'm definitely pregnant." The woman jarred as his strong arms wrapped around her, and he drew her against him. "Alex?" she questioned, stunned by his reaction.

"You're pregnant," he whispered, kissing her gently before dropping his hand to her stomach, caressing the skin gently. "You're pregnant, you're pregnant..."

"Are you happy?"

His eyes jerked to hers. "What? Yes! Of course I'm happy! I'm surprised,'s a good surprise..." He hesitated, his mind flashing to his friend Cristina. "Are you? Do you want to terminate?"

"Terminate? No!" Jo exclaimed, her hand moving over his protectively. "I just...I didn't know how to tell you...we already have Sarah, and now..."

"She'll have a brother or sister."

The brunette smiled and snuggled into his side as he lay back against the pillows. "That's the real reason I'm putting off classes. I'll find something to do, but..."

"Don't worry about it," Alex cut her off. "We're going to be fine. You take however long you need. Don't stress about working or anything like that. You have to take care of my baby."

Jo giggled against his chest, a goofy smile covering her face. "So I can sit at home and do nothing?"

"No," he smirked, leaning in and pressing his lips to the top of her head. "You have a wedding to plan."

The woman's grin grew, if possible. "I do, don't I? Wow, I don't even know where to start..."

"I know where you're going to start," the doctor chuckled. "You're going to start by giving Callie and Arizona a call. They've looked forward to this day since they interviewed you."

Jo shook her head and laughed as her hand moved to her stomach. The past year of her life had been a crazy rollercoaster ride, and it seemed the next year of her life would be the same, but...she was ready for this ride. This ride involved a new life with the man she loved, a little girl she loved, and a baby of her own. Alex's own. Their own. No matter what the upcoming days brought, for now Jo would enjoy her happily ever after.
