Holding firmly to the trunk, I took a step toward him, and then my knees bent and I jounced the limb. Finny, his balance gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit the bank with a sickening, unnatural thud. It was the first clumsy physical action I had ever seen him make. With unthinking sureness I moved out on the limb and jumped into the river, every trace of my fear of this forgotten.

-A Separate Peace, last paragraph of Chapter 4.

I hesitated as Finny moved out farther on the slender branch, hugging the trunk of the tree. He looked at me curiously and smiled after a few moments, as if sensing my fear. "Ready Gene?"

"Yes," I nodded, and stiffly moved out more towards the tree, trying to shake away the idea that nearly had overcome me. Make Finny fall? It made me feel sick in my stomach, but I didn't have time to ponder it long as Finny had started a countdown for when we would cement our friendship for the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session.

"On our marks, go!"

He grabbed my hand to make sure that we took off at the same time, and we pushed off and down into the tree branches that snapped around us, Finny letting out a whooping laugh just before we fell into the water, safely away from the bank. My feet touched the slick mud and I popped neatly up at the surface, at the same time Finny did.

The other members applauded us, and Finny slapped me on the back as we pulled ourselves out, before the co-leader of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session went back to trying to convince Leper to jump (and failing).

The panic of what I was planning on doing hit me in full force, and I blanched, along with the terror that always came over me whenever I jumped. What was I going to do?

Finny put an arm around my shoulders and I forced myself to not think of it, as Chet was giving me a curious look, as was Phineas. "You all right there Gene?"

I jolted my head up and down quickly. "Yeah, just peachy."

I can't get the writing style, oh well.

I don't own A Separate Peace and dear lord don't I wish this had happened instead like seriously Gene I was cringing.
