Baby Scarlatti arrives

Authors note: There's been another time skip in here so Hailey is 7 months pregnant at the start and then 9 months at the end.

"Hey Jules," Hailey says as she answers her phone. "What's up?"

"Hey sweetie, I don't want you to worry, but Spike hit his head pretty hard just now on a call. We've sent him off to the hospital with Sam to get checked out, but I'm sure he's fine, it's just a precaution. I was just ringing to tell you just in case he's late home."

"The hospital? It's that serious?" Hailey asks anxiously

"No, I'm sure he's fine, I didn't see him before he went but Sam said he'd ring as soon as they've been seen, so I'll ring you when I know anything new."

"Oh. Ok, thanks Jules."

"No problem hon', I'll ring you later."

"Thank you."

"Hello?" Hailey says eagerly, picking up the phone.

"Hey, I just heard from Sam. The doctors want to keep Spike in for observation tonight. He's ok, everything's ok, they just want to be cautious."

"Oh my god." Hailey gasps.

"Honey, he's ok. Sam said he's fine, he's worried about you, he doesn't want you to worry about him." Jules replies.

"I wanna see him."

"I just wanna see for myself that he's ok." Hailey protests. "Can you tell Sam I'm on my way to see Mike?"

"Of course." Jules says. "You want me to come pick you up?"

"No, no thank you. I'm ok."

"Ok, I'll talk to you later."

"Yeah, I'll text you later."

"Hey, I'll go now Spike, leave you two alone." Sam says, getting up from the chair beside Spike's bed, as they both turn to see Hailey stood in the doorway of Spike's hospital room. He gives her a hug as he passes her and then shuts the door behind him as he leaves.

"Hey you," Spike says, motioning for Hailey to join him on the bed.

"You scared me." Hailey says quietly, curling up the best she could next to him on the bed.

"I'm sorry baby," Spike starts, pressing a kiss to Hailey's temple as she leans into him. "If I'd had the chance to ring you and let you know I was ok myself, I would have."

"I know. It wouldn't have stopped me worrying though. You know that."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"Not your fault."Hailey mumbles, snuggling even closer into Spike. "I love you."

"Love you too. Both of you." Spike replies, running his hand over Hailey's stomach.

"She likes it when you do that."

"She?" Spike repeats. "You still think it's a girl?" Hailey shrugs before replying.

"I dunno. Maybe."

"What did you mean she likes it?"

"When you rub my belly. She likes it." Hailey says. "She calms down. She usually kicks up a storm and then when you put your hands on my belly, it's like it relaxes her and the kicks get softer." Spike smiles and kisses Hailey's forehead.

"Do you want it to be a girl?" He asks and she shrugs again.

"Doesn't really bother me either way, I'd be happy with either." She replies

"What makes you think it's a girl though?"

"Just a feeling." Spike nods and kisses her again, both of them settling into a comfortable silence.

"Hails?" Spike calls from the living room.

"Yeah?" Hailey calls back.

"There's someone on the phone for you...Jay?" Spike replies and Hailey sighs.

"How did he get my number?" She mutters to herself. "Just tell him I'm busy." She shouts to Spike who frowns, but takes the call off hold to relay the message.

"He didn't sound very happy about that." He says, entering the kitchen where Hailey was. "Who is he?"

"No one important. Can you grab my phone for me please?" She says in reply.

"He's not important Mike. Can you just get my phone for me please? I need to ring Sophie." Spike sighs, but nods, leaving the room to get the phone.

"Hey, how's Hailey doing?" Ed asks Spike as he enters the locker room the next day.

"Uh, yeah she's good." Spike replies. "You don't know anyone called Jay do you? In relation to Hailey and Sophie? It's just Hailey got a call yesterday from someone called Jay, but she wouldn't talk to him or tell me who he was."

"Did you ask who he was?" Ed clarifies and Spike nods. "It's not my place to..."

"Ed please," Spike says cutting him off. "I just want to know who this guy is, if he's gonna cause Hailey any stress or problems." Ed sighs and hangs his head before replying.

"Jay is Hailey and Sophie's brother."

"Why didn't you tell me about him?" Spike asks Hailey as he enters their apartment after his shift.

"Who?" Hailey asks, briefly glancing up from her laptop.

"Your brother." Spike replies, taking the laptop and setting it down on the floor, before perching on the coffee table in front of Hailey.

"Nathan?" Hailey asks with a frown.

"No, Jay. Come on Hailey, don't play stupid with me."

"I'm not! I told you before, it's not important, he's not important."

"Still. Why didn't you tell me you had another brother, not even a half brother, a full brother?"

"I don't know." Hailey says with a shrug and Spike sighs, running his hands over his face.

"Are you angry?" She asks, her voice quivering.

"No. Just confused. Hails, he's your brother. I'm your boyfriend."

"You don't think I know that?!" Hailey all but shouts. "Mike! I haven't spoken to him in years. After dad died Jay moved away and we fell out of touch, all of us did; Sophie and I didn't even know if he was still alive until about five years ago when he turned up on Sophie's doorstep, high as a kite. Turns out, he'd gotten married two years previously. He then got another woman pregnant, his wife left him and he turned to drugs. Mike, you didn't hear the things he said to us, about us that day, trust me, if you had, you'd be ignoring him too."

"Ok, alright, I get that that upset you guys, really, I do, but sweetheart, you could have told me." Spike replies

"I know, but what good would it have done? Sophie put him up in a hotel for the night, she was going to check him into rehab the next day, but when we got there the next morning, he was gone. He'd checked himself out and done a runner again. I haven't spoken to him in five years Mike, that's why I didn't tell you, it's not important..." Hailey explains, trailing off as she takes a sharp intake of breath.

"Hailey..." Spike starts. "You ok?" He takes her hand and frowns as she nods and relaxes back into the sofa again. "What was that?"

"Just another Braxton Hick. I've been having them all afternoon. It's nothing to worry about." She says, waving him off and going to grab her laptop back.

"Hails..." Spike says, gently pushing her back. "Sweetheart, I don't think that was a Braxton Hick, I don't think they're meant to hurt that much."

"Mike, trust me I'm...fine..." She starts, trailing off again as she glances down to find the sofa wet beneath her?. "Oh God."

"Uh...yeah...not Braxton Hicks. Sweetheart, I think you're in labour." Spike says

"No." Hailey says with a shake of her head. "Nope. Not now."

"Yes." Spike replies. "Looks like we're going to be welcoming our baby into the world a little sooner than we thought."

"Hi I uh I'm looking for Hailey...Hailey Carter? I..."

"Nathan". Sophie says, turning to find her half-brother stood at the nurses desk.

"Sophie. Hey." Nathan says with a sigh, making his way over to where team one was sat, awaiting news of baby Scarlatti.

"Who...who told you..." Sophie asks, trailing off, standing to give him a hug.

"Jay told me Sophie. He rang me. He thought I should know." He replies, hugging her back

"Nathan..." Sophie begins, shaking her head.

"Sophie please. She's my sister too, and Jay's. I know Jay only knows 'cause your mum rang him but Sophie, you and Hailey can't go on like this. He needs you. He needs us. All of us."

"I know that, it's just..." Sophie says, trailing off again. "Look, can we just not talk about this right now? Today is all about Hailey, Mike and the baby. You're more than welcome to sit with us and wait, but there's to be no more talk of Jay, ok?" Nathan nods and sits down beside Sophie, who grips Ed's hand in hers.

"Is she ok?" Nathan asks quietly after a while of being sat in silence.

"Hailey?" Sophie clarifies and continues at Nathan's nod. "Yeah, I think so. Nervous, but that's to be expected, the baby is coming a little earlier than expected."

"Too early?" He asks and Sophie shakes her head.

"They should both be fine. I saw her just after the doctors admitted her; she seemed ok, but from what Spike's been telling us, she's progressing pretty slowly so we might be here a while. You don't have to stay here the whole time if you've got somewhere to be." She replies with a smile.

"That's ok, I'll wait with you. Nothing's more important then our sister, right?"

"Do you think she'll be happy to see me?" Nathan asks nervously.

"I don't think she'll be unhappy." Sophie replies. "I think she may be a little confused, I mean, she's never met you after all."

"True. Will you let her know I'm here before I go in? I don't want to upset her."

"Sure, I'm sure she'll be fine about it though." Sophie replies

"I only found out she was pregnant a few months ago." Nathan says softly, after they had been sat in silence for a while.

"I would have let you know but I didn't have your number." Sophie replies

"I know, it's ok. Was the preganancy ok? I know she had a miscarriage in the past."

"Yeah, it was pretty smooth. She had a scare at the beginning but it turned out to be nothing. Her and the baby were healthy the whole way through."

"Good. That's good."

*Later that evening*

"Soph." Spike calls from the doorway of the waiting room. Sophie looks up from the magazine she had been reading and gives him a tired smile.

"Hey, how's she doing?" She asks and Spike smiles in reply.

"Good. The doc thinks she's almost ready to start pushing; she'd like you in there if you feel up to it?"

"Yeah! Of course." Sophie exclaims, jumping up, suddenly wide awake. "Will you phone my mum, let here know the baby will be here soon?" She asks Nathan who was looking up at her.

"Yeah, sure." He replies, pulling his phone out of his pocket and standing up.

"Oh, and Ed. Get him to bring Izzy and Clark by in the morning."

"Will do."

"Hi?" Spike says to Nathan, frowning in confusion.

"Oh, sorry! In all the excitement, I forgot to introduce you guys. Nathan this is Mike, Hailey's boyfriend. Mike, this is Nathan, Hailey and I's half-brother."

"Oh, right. Hi." Spike says, shaking Nathan's hand. "Sorry, don't really want to leave Hailey alone for too long, I'll talk to you afterwards?" At Nathan's nod of his head, Spike smiles and turns, heading back down the hallway with Sophie right behind him.

"You did so well baby." Sophie whispers, pressing a kiss to the top of Hailey's head. Hailey looks up and gives her a tired smile in thanks. "She's beautiful."

"Izzy's gonna be happy." Hailey says with a light laugh. Sophie laughs as well and nods her head.

"I think she's gonna be glad she's not the youngest anymore and that she's got another little girl to play with. Clark and I were talking about whether we thought you were going to have a boy or a girl the other day and Izzy refused to acknowledge the fact that you might not have a baby girl."

"Aww. I can't wait for Iz to meet her. She's coming by soon right?" Hailey asks and Sophie nods.

"Ed's gonna bring them by in the morning."

"Hey mama, you wanna hold her?" Spike asks as he gently carries their baby daughter over to the bed. Hailey nods enthusiastically and smiles when Spike places her in her arms.

"She's perfect." Hailey mutters, running her hand gently over the babies head.

"She still needs a name." Spike says softly, perching on the edge of the bed beside Hailey. "Do you still like the name we picked out?"

"Yes. I think it's perfect." She replies. "Jessica Mae Scarlatti."

"That's a beautiful name." Sophie comments. "I'm going to go out and tell everyone she's arrived into the world safely."

"Thank you." Hailey says, looking up at her sister. "I don't think I could have done this without either of you."

"Anytime sweetheart." Sophie says, kissing her on the top of the head before turnng for the door. "Oh, and before I forget, Nathan's outside. Jay told him what was going on, he wanted to be here for you. If you don't feel up to talking to him that's fine, I'll tell him you're too tired but if not then he's outside and I can send him in."

"He's here?" Hailey clarifies and Sophie nods.

"I met him just now, he seems quite nice. Obviously I haven't had chance to speak to him yet." Spike adds. Hailey nods and looks down at Jessica who was sleeping in her arms.

"Do you want me to send him in?" Sophie asks.
