A/N: So while texting a friend who was sick at the time, we kind of created a Monochrome Doctor AU and it's super dumb but ahaha here I am 6,700 words later... No Faunus, just normal human world.
This is just gonna be a one-shot for the idea my friend and I had, so please don't ask me to write more. If I want to, I will.

Checkup
Blake was an absolute mess – and that was being kind about things.
She hated going to the doctor's more than anything.
As if the physical poking and prodding and needles weren't bad enough, there was also the personal questions about her mentality and emotions.
And not to mention the sheer panic-inducing anxiety that resulted simply from knowing 'today was the day' as soon as she woke up a jittery mess.
She was always so nervous she could never trust herself to drive there on her own, so for the usual checkup, she called Yang and requested to be driven. Her best friend would always accompany her for moral support and provide something sturdy and soft for Blake to cling to while sitting and waiting in the sickeningly colorful lobby strewn with children's toys to make them believe they were actually in a fun place, misguiding them with lies and pretty things until the moment they got called in and then-
"Blake?"
She jumped at the sound of Yang's voice. She was in the passenger's seat of the car as the blonde drove on what would've been an enjoyable spring day if not for where she needed to be taken. Blake's shoulders slumped back against the seat.
"Y-Yeah?"
Yang flashed her a quick glance.
"Hey, again I'm really sorry."
Blake bit her lip.
"It... It's fine..."
Yang was apologizing because this time, she couldn't stay with Blake at the doctor's like she'd always done previously. She needed to pick up Ruby and take her to a family thing, and only had time to drop Blake off.
And despite Blake's efforts to reschedule the doctor's appointment to another day or time, nothing ended up being convenient for Yang or herself. So this was their only option.
Yang knew Blake was beyond nervous about everything, even though this was just a checkup. Still, she just felt awful about having to leave her there alone.
"I'll be back in time to pick you up and take you home," she reminded the girl.
But Blake seemed to be lost in thought – or more likely, panic.
"Okay..." she mumbled.
It wasn't just the fact that she'd be alone today, either. Evidently, her old doctor had retired and she'd been given a new one starting today.
It was hard for Blake to talk to people consistently, or at all, really. She considered it a blessing she'd ever managed to make friends with Yang, and only through her had Blake spoken to and gotten closer to Ruby as well.
But other than the sisters, Blake was a loner and didn't like people.
Especially new people.
Strangers, she could avoid easily enough with a fake smile and a bit of a sprint.
But whatever ounce of familiarity or comfort she'd built up with her previous doctor was now shattered. She'd have to start over from scratch with this new person now, and she wouldn't be able to cling onto Yang's arm as she did so.
She just wasn't having a very good day.
It was only a few minutes later when the car pulled up into the dreaded building's parking lot. This was another reason why she'd asked Yang to drive her, because Blake knew if she herself had somehow managed not to crash her car on the way and she actually made it this far, she probably would've just kept driving past the building and never looked back.
She was shaking now, hands clutching at her shirt and pants or whatever they could reach and squeezing for dear life until her knuckles drained of blood.
But Yang didn't drive the car up to the doors to drop her off like she'd been expecting her to. Blake was puzzled when her friend drove them around the parking lot and pulled into a space.
"Yang?" she said timidly. "A-Aren't you just going to drop me off?"
Yang turned off the car and unbuckled her seatbelt, pulling out the keys and slipping them into her short's pocket with a grin.
"I can spare the minute to come in with ya."
Blake let out a shaky exhale before smiling the tiniest bit.
She was fumbling with trembling fingers to try and free her seat belt, so Yang got out of the car and opened her door to help her. She took Blake's hands and helped her stand up, closing the door behind her. Blake clung to her arm instantly, like a python constricting prey.
Yang chuckled despite the guilt she was feeling.
"I couldn't just drive up and push you out of the car and then take off. Gotta at least give ya a good hug."
She did as much now, wrapping her free arm around her friend and kissing the top of her head. Blake sighed, savoring her touch for as long as it may last.
Slowly, they made their way to the doors that automatically slid open for them. Beyond them was the dreaded lobby with walls painted with animals and toys and magazine lying on the floor and on shelves.
Blake felt a small wave of nausea heave in her stomach as she stepped into the room. Yang really felt awful to feel the girl shaking like this. Usually, it wasn't this bad, but today combined the fact that Yang couldn't stay with her and that she would be seeing a new doctor. It was just a very unfortunate coincidence.
Yang coaxed her friend over to the front desk so they could check in, and with a wobbling hand, Blake signed a paper. The woman at the desk smiled at them.
"Alright, then Ms. Belladonna. You may have a seat until your doctor calls for you." She then leaned forward a bit. "Don't worry. Your new doctor is a very skilled student who graduated medical school at the top of her class at the age of 19, just last year!"
"Wow!" Yang whistled. "That so?" She turned to Blake hopefully. "So she's our age! That's pretty awesome, right? I mean, might be a bit easier for you to talk to her then, y'know? At least it won't be some old guy."
She led Blake over to the couches in the waiting area, choosing a spot away from the other people and the playing children. But the clock on the wall made her frown.
"Blake? I'm really sorry, but I gotta get going now."
Her words pulled Blake from her trance, and the dark-haired girl froze, feeling her heart rate quicken even more than the pace that it already was. But she'd known it would be this way, and she'd been trying to brace herself for their parting all morning.
It was hard to let go of Yang's arm, and Blake was starting to think it might be physically impossible to do. Yang was distraught.
"Blake..." She sat down on a small couch and pulled the girl with her. "Hey, hey, listen to me, now. Don't go spookin' yourself like this. I mean, I know we're at the doctor's, but that doesn't mean you can go giving yourself a heart-attack, okay? And no panic attacks either. I'll never forgive myself if I knew I left you one time and that's what became of it."
She hugged her friend's shoulders, feeling them shaking. Blake's heart was throbbing hard enough for Yang to feel it, and she was conflicted.
"Hey, maybe we should leave after all? I'll take you home and we can just come back some other day..."
But Blake took a deep breath and shook her head.
"No... You already drove me all the way here, and I already signed in. I should stay..."
Yang rubbed her back gently.
"If you're sure..." she muttered. "The sooner I get going to grab Ruby, the sooner we can come back here to get you, okay?"
Blake inhaled again.
"Okay..."
Yang opened her arms more, and Blake immediately threw herself at the blonde's chest, hugging her tightly enough to make Yang wheeze.
"You'll be fine, Blake," she said. "Don't be so freaked out, okay? You're tough and you can handle this." She kissed Blake's hair again before releasing her. "I'll be back soon, okay?"
Reluctantly, Blake relinquished her grip and her arms fell weakly into her lap.
"Okay," she mumbled. "But don't speed."
Yang cracked a smile.
"We'll see!"
She left Blake and hurried out the door, intent to keep true to her word about leaving quickly and coming back quickly.
Blake watched her go, one hand slightly outstretched toward her back, but she refused to chase after Yang or call her back. She was 19 years old, for crying out loud. She could go to a doctor's appointment by herself, couldn't she?
And it wasn't even a physical examination, so she wouldn't have to strip and wear that awful paper dress or anything like that. She wasn't sick either – at least as far as she knew.
All in all, this appointment shouldn't take more than half an hour, if it took that long.
She could do this.
Blake straightened her posture against the couch cushion and took several more deep breaths. She realized she'd forgotten the book she'd wanted to read during her waiting time in Yang's car, so she reached out for a magazine. Her eyes scanned the page aimlessly, and she didn't really absorb any of the words.
She spent ten minutes on the same page as the children in the room played around her. A few of them cried, and Blake sympathized deeply.
It was then she felt her phone in her pocket buzz, and she pulled it out to find a text from Yang: Hang in there! You got this!
Blake smiled and replied with her thanks before putting her phone away again.
It was another few minutes before the woman at the desk called her name.
"Ms. Belladonna? Your doctor will see you now."
Blake slapped the magazine shut and dropped it.
"R-Right..."
She stood shakily, and she could feel the eyes of the other people in the lobby upon her. The parents were muttering a bit.
Come on, Blake, she told herself. You're 19 years old! Most of these 5-year-olds are handling the trip to the doctor's better than you are!
More deep breaths, and she wobbled across the lobby and headed for the hallway that led to various rooms and offices.
A woman in a white shirt led her to a specific room, and Blake followed stiffly, pretending Yang was beside her. They passed her old doctor's room, and Blake's throat tightened. The woman paused when they reached the sliding door of the new room.
"Alright, here we are. Please wait just a few moments for your doctor to arrive," she said with a pleasant smile that made Blake's stomach churn.
Why'd you call me in if my doctor still isn't even in the room yet?! she shouted internally.
But on the outside, she nodded slowly and entered the room, sitting down in one of the two chairs against the wall as the woman closed the door.
The walls of this room were light blue, and there was a small sink and a cabinet across from her. There was a raised surface covered in paper where a patient could sit or lay down, as well.
All in all, it was the exact same set-up as her previous room, only the walls were a different color, and a more pleasant scent filled the air. Blake couldn't describe it at first, but it wasn't the same bland smell that wafted about the rest of the place – the smell of medicine and stark white. This was something nicer, almost like tea leaves.
So although she was forced to sit alone in an enclosed space in total silence for several painstaking moments now, the smallest mercy was that it smelled nice.
She tried not to focus on her racing heart or the fact that she had no one to talk or cling to. Instead, Blake concentrated on her breathing as best she could, reminding herself she'd be fine.
You can do this...
Her next inhale was cut short with a small yelp as the door suddenly slid open.
"Sorry for the wait," said a female voice.
Blake looked up nervously to see her new doctor.
The receptionist hadn't been lying. This girl was undoubtedly Blake's age, perhaps even a few months younger. Blake even had several inches on her.
She had snow-white hair tied into a ponytail, and crystal-blue eyes, as well as a small pink scar over her left cheek. The traditional doctor's robe draped her shoulders, and beneath it she wore a blue blouse and black dress pants.
It was an understandably formal getup, considering her profession, but seemed a little odd when Blake reminded herself this girl was her age.
And yet...
Blake froze as she looked her doctor up and down as she entered the room.
She was...
...absolutely gorgeous.
All of the nervousness of being at the doctor's melted away in a split second, but now her heart was thumping twice as quickly for another reason.
Blake's jaw gaped for an instant before she caught herself staring and closed it, forcing herself to blink.
The other girl sat down in the chair across from Blake, holding a clipboard in one hand and a pen in the other. She flashed a million-dollar smile, and Blake felt like she might pass out.
The second the girl spoke again, Blake forgot how to.
"Hello, Miss Belladonna," she said. "Now, I understand this is a bit awkward for you, what with me being your age, give or take a few months. But I assure you my degrees, education, and training in the medical field are legitimate and exceptional. My patients' satisfaction rate is nothing short of 100%. So I hope you aren't too put-off by my physical appearance."
Blake fumbled dumbly for words, but they only formed in her mind.
Put-off?
It was the exact opposite. Blake was utterly and entirely smitten by this girl's beauty. She was almost glad Yang wasn't with her now, because the blonde surely would have sensed it and teased her about it, too.
Blake fidgeted in her seat, her fingers once more clutching her pants as she realized the girl was waiting for an answer.
"Miss Belladonna?" she prompted. "Is something the matter?"
Blake sucked in a sharp breath.
"N-Not at all..." she stammered. "You can... c-call me Blake..."
She waited for the other girl's reaction, relieved to see it was a smile. Her smile was really pretty.
"I see," she said. "I understand that using formalities and calling you by your last name might be uncomfortable for you. So I'll call you Blake. That's alright?"
Blake's heart skipped when her name was spoken, and she quickly nodded. Her doctor smiled.
"Wonderful! And oh, where are my manners? My name is Weiss Schnee. Dr. Schnee still sounds a bit odd in my opinion, but you may call me whatever you like."
Blake's tongue was dry as she tried out the name.
"Weiss..."
"That's correct," the white-haired girl said. "Now then, I assume you've got places to go and people to see, so I'll make this checkup as brief as possible. I've got all your health records and papers on file from your previous doctor, so today I'll just be updating information on those."
Weiss looked down and scribbled a few things on her clipboard, during which time Blake did her very best not to gawk. Her heart still hadn't calmed down, and she was sure her face was red.
She hadn't had a crush before, at least not a serious one. Maybe once or twice in middle school but nothing this bad. And she'd fallen so quickly.
And for my own doctor! she screamed at herself. There's no way this is acceptable. What a horrible mess. I can't let this happen-
"Alright then," Weiss said, looking up.
Blake jolted and let out a small gasp, failing to avoid Weiss' eyes. She met those crystal-blue pools directly and felt herself get lightheaded again.
Weiss didn't seem to notice, though, and stood from her chair.
"Now then, I'll just have to check a few things. If you'd please come over here," she requested, motioning Blake forward.
Blake nodded and tried to stand, but she stumbled a bit and needed to sit back down. Weiss' eyes were instantly ridden with concern as she reached for her.
"Blake? Are you alright?"
"Y-Yes!" she squeaked. "Haha m-my legs were just a bit numb, that's all, I'm fine-" she babbled.
If Weiss touched her now, she really might pass out.
Blake knew she had it bad.
She gripped the arms of her chair and once more attempted to stand, thankfully being successful this time. She crossed the room to stand beside Weiss, and the other girl directed her to a scale.
Blake stiffly stepped onto it, feeling her stomach flip as Weiss reached up above her head to move the bar to measure her height. It was almost a little funny; Weiss was a bit shorter than she was, after all.
Blake forgot how to breathe for a minute as Weiss read the numbers and jotted them down. It was all Blake could do to keep herself from trembling, lest she make Weiss think she was ill.
It was incredible in a way just how quickly her fears of the doctor's had been dashed. And now, instead, they were replaced by jitters and nerves about having a crush on her own doctor.
Blake felt so confused about everything, and it was like her soul wasn't even in her body at all.
Weiss finished writing things down on her paper before giving Blake yet another charming smile.
"Excellent. You may step down now, Blake."
The dark-haired girl did as she was told, needing to lean against the large counter for support. Weiss nodded in satisfaction as she looked over the paper in her hands.
"You've grown a few millimeters since your last visit, and lost two pounds, which is just fine. Just be sure to keep eating healthy."
Blake nodded hollowly; Weiss was so close to her now and she couldn't think straight – not that she could before when she'd arrived here, but now that she was crushing on her doctor things were getting even worse.
Little did she know this was only the beginning.
Weiss then moved to the large counter covered in paper behind Blake. "Now then, would you mind hopping up here and having a seat?"
It was an endeavor not to slip or shake, but somehow Blake managed to haul herself up and sit on the edge, her legs now dangling off the side with her shoes a foot off the ground. Weiss stood beside her, pen and clipboard at the ready.
"Now then, just a few quick questions," she began. "Have you been eating healthy?"
"Yeah..."
"How many hours a day do you spend looking at a screen?"
"M-Maybe two..."
"Do you exercise at least twice a week for thirty minutes each time?"
"Yes."
"Good."
"Yes."
"Pardon?" Weiss asked.
Blake realized the last thing Weiss had said hadn't been a question and slapped a hand to her mouth.
"S-Sorry..."
"It's fine!" Weiss smiled. "Now then, how sexually active are you?"
Blake almost fell off the counter.
"W-What?"
"I know it's a bit of a personal question," Weiss said. "But I need to know if there's any risk of you being preg-"
"No!" Blake yelped. "Impossible! No risk at all. I've never h-had sex before or even kissed anyone!" she blurted.
A brief silence filled the room, and neither of them moved.
Then, Weiss gave that smile again.
"Well that's good to hear," she said, jotting down more notes. "If you ask me, I think it's best to wait until you've found the right person before you start getting intimate with them."
"Y-Yeah..." Blake wheezed, hoping to move away from this topic. Luckily, Weiss seemed to be done with it.
"Alright then. Let me just get a few things."
She put the clipboard next to Blake on the paper-covered counter and turned around. She opened the cabinet by the sink and pulled out a few containers and bottles before washing her hands thoroughly.
Blake waited anxiously all the while, trying not to hyperventilate.
A minute later, Weiss came back to her, putting her supplies aside for now before rummaging in another draw.
"I'm just going to do a quick eye examination," she warned, pulling out a small light. Blake nodded and followed her instructions to look up, down, and to the sides. Weiss then requested Blake open her mouth and she checked Blake's throat before shutting off the flashlight.
"Great! Your eyes are fine and you don't appear to be sick at all. Just let me record your temperature."
She extracted a small device that she placed in Blake's ear, and it automatically got her temperature from that. Blake watched as the girl checked the number, and her smile faded.
"Hm..."
"What is it?" Blake asked nervously.
Weiss offered a kind look.
"It seems you might actually have a bit of a fever," she diagnosed. "May I?" she asked, reaching out a hand.
Blake exhaled and nodded. She closed her eyes, feeling a small, cool hand press against her forehead. She certainly felt feverish indeed, but not for the reasons Weiss was probably thinking.
In fact, her proximity now was clearly making things even worse. Blake's chest was a mess and she felt like her face was burning up.
Weiss pulled away a moment later, mumbling to herself. "Well yes, you seem a bit feverish," she reiterated. "But I don't think it's anything you need to worry about. Just be sure to stay hydrated, alright? Eat lots of fruits. If you do start to feel unwell over the next few days, simply come back to see me and I'll do everything I can for you, alright?"
Her hand had subconsciously found it's way to Blake's, squeezing gently by means of comfort and reassurance. Blake gulped.
"Y-Yeah..." she said. "I will. Thank you..."
Weiss smiled again, sending Blake's heart into another erratic tantrum. She knew Weiss hadn't meant to touch her like that, as it probably wasn't proper doctor-patient conduct.
No... Weiss' touch to her hand was simply the touch of an equal, another 19-year-old girl – a friend.
Once that hand had slipped away from her own, Blake missed it more than she knew she should've.
Weiss went back to her clipboard to write more things before opening one of the containers she'd brought over before. She pulled out a pair of gloves and slid them on.
"Now unfortunately I'll need to take some blood. Would you mind rolling up your sleeve for me?"
Blake felt her stomach clench.
This meant a needle. Her absolute least favorite part of the entire experience.
She rolled up her sleeve to her bicep, but the nervous breath she let out was clearly louder than she'd hoped.
Weiss looked to her sympathetically.
"Don't like needles?" she guessed.
Blake nodded.
"Yeah..."
"Neither do I," Weiss confessed, perhaps a bit sheepishly. "Does anyone, really?"
Blake smiled for a second at that.
Weiss prepared a cotton ball and poured something onto it before dabbing it onto a particular spot on Blake's arm. Blake looked away.
"U-Usually my friend would be here with me, to distract me..." she mumbled. "She always held my hand..."
Weiss dabbed her arm a few more times before pausing. Blake waited for the pinch of the needle, but it didn't come.
Instead, she felt two small hands covering her own.
Jolting again, she flashed a glance to Weiss' understanding eyes.
"I'll need both hands for this," she said. "But you can hold them for a moment, if you'd like."
Blake forgot how to breathe again. But she couldn't stop her hands from clutching Weiss'. The white-haired girl giggled softly, leaning down to brush their foreheads together lightly.
"You're still a bit warm," she said softly.
There was... something about her voice that made Blake wonder if the things she was feeling might by some miracle be mutual.
No way... she told herself. Not possible. She's my doctor. She can't... she can't do this...
But the slow, gentle fingers rubbing her hands made Blake think twice.
It seemed Weiss was also realizing her deplorable behavior; she was working right now, after all. So she quickly pulled away, clearing her throat.
"Now then," she said. "Would you mind telling me what it says on that poster over there?" she asked, nodding to the right wall.
Blake looked and squinted at the poster of a cartoon elephant eating an apple.
"Um... it says 'Eat Fruit Every Day,'" she said.
"Very good," Weiss nodded. "You're all set then."
Puzzled, Blake looked back to her doctor to find Weiss already had a needle-full of blood. Blake hadn't even felt the prick of the needle. She was baffled.
Weiss slipped a bandaid over the spot where the needle had entered before putting everything back in the cabinet. She placed the needle into her robe's pocket.
"I'll just check your blood pressure next."
Weiss went into another drawer and pulled out the device, strapping it onto Blake's upper arm. Blake was stiff as ever as she felt the strap constrict around her arm, and her pulse started to flutter even harder until the pressure gradually released. Weiss read the numbers and wrote them down on the papers once more. "Your blood pressure is just fine. Now I've just got to get this needle to my office to run a quick test with the blood," she said. "I'll be back in just a moment."
Blake was still speechless and simply nodded.
Weiss slipped out of the room and slid the door closed behind her, leaving Blake in silence once more.
More time to panic.
Oh my god... she thought. I mean it's clear that I'm crushing on her, but what about her? She wouldn't have just held my hands like that if she wasn't, right? But she can't! Can she? Can she do that? Is it allowed?
Now she really wished Yang was here.
Blake fished out her cell phone with shaking hands, wondering if she should text Yang and ask what she should do about all of this.
She stared at the screen blankly for several minutes, flustered beyond compare.
But just when she'd finally gathered the guts to start typing, the doors slid open once more. With another squeak, Blake shoved her phone back into her pocket as though she were a criminal about to get busted.
Weiss gave her a curious look.
"You may use your phone. It's fine, Blake. Don't worry."
"Ahh... I-I just finished texting my friend," she lied. "Sorry for being so jumpy."
"It's quite alright," Weiss said, bringing back that smile. "Going to the doctor's can be a bit intimidating, I know."
"Tell me about it," Blake muttered under her breath.
She was flooded with a new wave of nervousness now. She noticed something new about Weiss' appearance now – the stethoscope around her neck. Which could only mean one thing-
"Well," Weiss said, closing the door once more. "Everything's in order. Just a few more things and you'll be good to go, Blake!" She walked over to the counter and paused beside Blake, but frowned when she realized the predicament. "I'm going to have to climb up there with you, alright?"
Blake felt another wave of panic shoot through her, and it was all she could do not to blurt out "What? Why?"
Blake scooched over a few inches, and Weiss sat on the counter beside her, giving an accomplished sigh before fixing her clothing a bit.
"Now then, would you please give me your hand? I just need to check your pulse."
It took Blake a moment, but she gradually extended her left arm toward Weiss. The other girl held onto her hand and pressed two fingers to her wrist.
Blake wasn't sure if she should close her eyes or look away, if she should stop breathing or keep at it.
Weiss recorded her pulse for a full minute, counting the beats in silence before releasing her hand. Weiss' lips were pursed a bit as she scribbled on her clipboard for the dozenth time, but Blake was concerned because she wasn't smiling like before.
Weiss put the clipboard aside and moved the ear buds of the stethoscope into place.
"Now then, if you'd please lift your shirt for me."
Blake swayed a bit, but quickly caught herself in time to prevent herself from falling off the counter. She couldn't even babble nonsensically or anything of the sort.
Slowly, her fingers clutched at her shirt as she started to roll it up, but it slipped through her hands and fell once more.
Weiss tilted her head curiously. "Blake? Is something wrong?"
"N-Not at all!" she said.
Blake cursed in her mind as she grabbed her shirt once more and managed to roll it up, clutching it to her throbbing chest. The raw air hit her bare back, leaving only her black bra to shield her from the slight chill.
Weiss put a hand on her shoulder and gently turned her away.
"I'll just have a listen from your back first, alright?" she said by means of warning.
Blake nodded.
"Th... That's fine..."
She closed her eyes and waited. Weiss' hand was still on her shoulder, supporting her a bit. A few seconds later, Blake felt the stethoscope press between her shoulder blades, and Weiss' presence pulled closer.
"Alright," the white-haired girl murmured. "Now breathe in for me. Deeply and slowly."
Blake did her best, and it was mortifying how unsteady and wobbly it was. Her heart was pounding so hard and so quickly she was worried she'd make Weiss deaf.
Blake squeezed her eyes closed, clutching her ruffled shirt-
"Um, Blake?"
She jumped again and looked over her shoulder. Weiss was smiling, but her eyes were worried.
"I need you to keep breathing. Please don't stop; that wouldn't be good for either of us."
Blake realized she had failed to exhale, so she presently released a breath that made her sound like a half-drowned water buffalo. It made even Weiss jump.
"Blake? Are you sure you're alright? You're shaking a bit-"
"I-I-I'm fine," she gasped. "Really, I'm... just fine."
Weiss didn't seem convinced, but she didn't press the matter again. At least not right away.
"If you're sure..." she said. She pressed the stethoscope to Blake's back once more and focused on her heartbeat. "Breathe in for me again please," she requested.
Blake obeyed, inhaling through her mouth.
Weiss nodded. "Alright. Now breathe out."
Again, Blake complied, getting a bit more accustomed to the process as it went on.
Weiss moved the stethoscope around to several spots on Blake's back, and her eyebrows furrowed a little more each time. The girl's heartbeat was exceedingly fast.
Weiss continued to direct Blake on her breathing for another minute or so until finally, she pulled away. "Alright..." Weiss sounded uncertain. "Now please just face me. You can pull your shirt back down."
Blake sighed with relief and tugged her shirt down, shifting a bit to turn and face Weiss. But the other girl seemed troubled, and Blake got nervous all over again.
"Weiss? Is... um i-is something wrong?"
Her doctor quickly shook her head.
"I'm sure it's nothing. Now let me just listen from the front."
Blake inhaled sharply again as Weiss pressed the stethoscope to her collar that her shirt exposed. Her eyes went shut once more, and she swallowed hard and ended up coughing. Weiss heard the girl's heart jump, and she quickly patted Blake's back.
"Easy!" she said, her voice raising a bit in concern. "Breathe now, alright? I just need to listen to your heart."
Blake calmed herself down a bit and got her breath back.
God, I'm such a mess...
It was hard to follow Weiss' soft directions of "In... out..." over and over again.
Weiss pressed the stethoscope to a few spots on Blake's chest and listened, still unsettled by the rapid speed of her pulse.
When at last she pulled away, she removed the ear buds and grabbed her clipboard. Blake watched her, scared now because there were no traces of that smile on Weiss' lips anymore. She bit her lip as Weiss scribbled more onto her clipboard, then met Blake's eyes.
"Let me just check your temperature one more time..." she said, beckoning Blake closer.
Uncertain, she complied, feeling Weiss' hand on her skin once again.
But it wasn't just her hand this time.
Weiss kissed her forehead softly to better feel her temperature.
Blake was surely on fire now.
When Weiss pulled away, she sighed.
"Blake... I'm worried," she said. "You appear to be in perfect health. You're not sick at all, and yet... you're running a slight fever and your heart rate is nearly double the usual pace. I checked your records, but you have no history of arrhythmia of any kind. Unless this is a recent development, in which case, I think I need to get you a prescription... Would you like some water? I think I'll have to ask you to stay a while longer so I can diagnose whatever this is."
Blake was nothing short of baffled by every word out of Weiss' mouth.
She... honestly thought it was obvious what was 'wrong' with her, but evidently, Weiss could only think with the mindset of a doctor, adhering to all of the training and lessons she'd gone through during her strict education. She was overlooking the obvious.
Blake actually let out a small, sheepish chuckle.
Weiss blinked.
"Blake? What's the matter?"
Blake bit her lip.
She's really going to... make me say it, isn't she?
Blake sighed and ran a hand through her hair, wondering if she should really do this. No, she did have to, or else Weiss would insist on running more tests on her to make sure she was alright. The other girl's concern for Blake made her feel fuzzy inside, and it was quite touching.
It's also... a bit more than just a doctor should be feeling for a patient, Blake thought.
If there was any hope for this, she was about to find out.
Blake took another deep breath and met Weiss' eyes.
"Weiss... I'm not sick. Trust me on that," she began.
Weiss seemed dubious.
"Really? Then how do you explain-"
"Because," Blake said. Her eyes flashed to the floor, then back to her doctor's gaze. "Because... well... you're just... really pretty, Weiss..." she mumbled.
She couldn't believe she'd actually said it. Was this even real? Blake couldn't be sure.
But the shock on Weiss' face was proof enough.
The white-haired girl blinked, clearly dumbfounded. It seemed Blake was the one to catch her off guard this time.
Weiss was still for a long moment before shaking her head.
"I... Pardon?"
Blake sighed again.
"You... You didn't mishear me," she assured. "And... I know it's ridiculous and maybe even impossible, but I just... I don't know..."
She looked away, ashamed. She knew these feelings were wrong, not to mention rushed and totally inappropriate, but she didn't exactly have a choice with it.
And yet, she didn't feel so bad when Weiss' hand touched her cheek, coaxing Blake to look at her once more. Weiss was smiling again.
"Thank goodness," she said. "I'm glad you're not sick. But I'm even more relieved that the feeling's mutual."
Blake nodded.
"Yeah, I'm not sick, I just- …Wait, what?"
"You heard me," Weiss said. "The second I walked in here, my heart started doing backflips. You're really beautiful. Believe me, it was hard to act professional about everything. How nice to know you like me, too."
"I-I..." Blake stuttered, flabbergasted. "I... I mean I just..."
"I understand," Weiss said. "We can't possibly maintain a professional relationship if we plan to carry on another kind of relationship as well."
Blake almost squealed in delight, but stopped herself.
"Really? S-So what do we do... about us...? I mean, th-that is, if you even really want to-"
"Don't be ridiculous," Weiss reassured. "Of course I do. I'll take care of everything." She slipped off the counter and got back to her feet, helping Blake down beside her. "I'll simply request they change your doctor again. I'll tell them I have my reasons. This way, we don't have to worry about anything."
She flipped a few pages on the clipboard and wrote something down before tearing it off and handing it to Blake.
"Here," she said. "Prescription. For your slight arrhythmia."
Puzzled, Blake glanced down at the paper.
Again, she nearly collapsed.
It was a phone number.
Her jaw hung open as she looked back to Weiss, but the girl put a finger to her lips and winked.
"Call me, alright? We can set up a date sometime when I'm free from work here. We can get to know each other better. That should fix you up."
Blake couldn't form words anymore. She was far beyond that point.
A buzz in her pocket alerted her to a message from Yang saying she was here to pick Blake up. The dark-haired girl looked back to Weiss, incredulous.
"Weiss... are you... are you sure-"
"Blake," she purred. "I'm more than certain." She reached down to take the girl's hand and kissed the back of her knuckles. "Text me, we can meet up, and then I can give you a checkup whenever you might need it. Though I won't have to be wearing this outfit."
With that, she took her clipboard and sauntered out of the room.
Blake watched her go, feeling as though she'd just lived a dream.
And now, as she walked down the hallways, she had to think frantically.
She then had to explain to Yang how she'd left for a doctor's appointment half an hour ago, and just came out with a date.
A/N: Haha how dumb was this? Sorry, but it would't leave me alone after that conversation I had with my friend, pfff. Anyway, hope you enjoyed.
