New Arrival
Tails balanced the overnight bag on one arm and Cream on his other, propping her up as she waddled in pain out the door. The night sky offered little light and several times, Tails tripped and stumbled along the walkway to the garage, his vision still waking up, and the world a blurry mess of black and blue. Hitting a button on his watch, the garage door swung open, revealing the Tornado. As he maneuvered his wife to it, he pressed more buttons on his watch, calling Sonic.
After a few rings, the line clicked and a groggy, "Whozat?" answered.
"Sonic, can you come pick up Violet?" he asked, throwing the bag into one of the plane's compartments and securing them. "Cream's having-" he stopped as she howled in pain, her knees buckling and her eyes scrunched tight. Her hand reached out for him, waving around, and he grabbed it, helping her steady against the plane.
"Tails," she said, grinding her teeth.
"I know, I'm sorry, hon," he said, lifting her up and flying her into the seat.
As Tails strapped her in, he heard Sonic on the line talking. "Uh, sure, kid. I'm on my way. Amy, wake up."
"Thanks," Tails said, then ended the call. Unlike Violet, who at least had had the decency to wait until daylight, the new baby had woken Cream in the middle of the night, kicking Tails out of bed. Bleary eyed and not even close to fully awake, he blinked rapidly at the controls before him while starting the plane, gaining his bearings and running through a mental checklist to see if they forgot anything.
"Tails!" Cream said, leaning and grabbing her stomach.
Forget it. If anything's missing, we can come back later. He flipped a switch by the controls, turning on the runway lights that ran to the end of the sudden drop-off at the end of the cliff. Slowly, he eased the plane out and taxied along the dark stretch of dirt.
As they picked up speed, he watched Cream, afraid that every bump of the runway made things worse. She gripped the edge of the seat and his hand very tight, holding on for dear life. Carefully, he eased the control stick back, raising the Tornado off the ground and into the air, where the jolts and bumps immediately ceased and the flight became smooth. A cool ocean breeze swept through his fur and across his face, waking him up and clearing his head fully.
Cream sucked in her breaths, expelling them in short bursts, and laid back in the seat. "Just remember," Tails said, reaching over and rubbing her stomach. "In and o-" The murderous expression she gave him cut him off. "Right, you know how to do it." He pulled the stick to the left, circling their little outcropping of land, and directed the plane for the distant hospital building in the city.
Sonic and Amy arrived at Tails' house shortly after, but held off waking her. "No point going now," Amy said. "Let her sleep. We'll take her to visit once we hear about Cream."
Sonic, Amy, and their children dozed in the living room, catching a few more hours of sleep before Tails called Sonic, waking them up. "Everything's okay," he told them. "She had the baby."
"Great, bud. We'll be right there."
Hanging up, Sonic crept into Violet's room carefully and flipped on the light. As soon as the light hit her eyes, she closed them tight and curled up in bed, whining low. He smiled and knelt by her bed, gently shaking her. "Hey, Vi. Vi, you gotta wake up. It's Uncle Sonic."
Opening one eye, she rolled over and half-sat up, yawning and stretching her arms. "Where's my Mommy?"
"Your mom just had the baby. She's at the hospital and is waiting for you there with your dad. We're gonna go visit her in a few minutes, but we need to get you dressed."
She nodded sleepily, dragging herself out of bed and stumbling over to her dresser. Amy stood in the doorway, holding Breeze while Florian tugging at her leg. She passed Breeze to Sonic and intervened for Violet when the toddler tried in her stupor to put a hat on as a pair of pants and a pillowcase as a shirt. "Maybe you let me help you there," she said, sitting her down and helping her out of the pajamas and into a shirt and pants.
Once she was ready, Violet seemed more awake and the excitement of the new baby had hit her in full. "I can't wait to see her!" she said as they left the house and Sonic locked up.
"What about the baby?" Sonic asked, checking the door and heading to the garage to close it as well.
"Yeah, the baby! I can't wait to see her!"
Sonic stopped by the control box for the garage doors and exchanged a worried look with Amy. "So, the baby…you can't wait to see her?" Amy asked tentatively.
"Yeah, Mommy is giving me a new baby sister."
"I see," she said.
Sonic closed the garage and picked up Florian as Violet ran ahead of them to Amy's car, the toddler now jumping up and down excitedly. He leaned into Amy while Violet hopped into the backseat. "This oughta be interesting."
The birth had gone smoother than Tails could have hoped for. A healthy baby boy who had quickly settled down once delivered, and had instead stared at his new parents with fascinated, baby blue eyes like Tails' own.
"Hello, Skye," Cream said, cooing at him as his twin tails drifted lazily out of his bundle and ensnared her arm and Tails' fingers as if feeling them out, exploring these two giants showering him with love.
"He has your smile," Tails said, tickling the small tuft of fur on Skye's chest. The baby burbled happily and turned into his mother, burying his face in her hospital gown. "I better go meet Sonic and Amy. They should be here in a few minutes."
"Alright," she said, pecking his lips as he left.
Walking through the quiet halls of the hospital, Tails' felt like he could breathe easier again. Everything had worked out well for the baby and he confirmed that he had grabbed everything they would need, running through his mental checklist at least twice. The hard part was over for now.
Then the elevator doors at the end of the hall opened and Tails suddenly remembered that not all was well yet. Running toward him was the last difficult obstacle to overcome, despite her being only a couple of feet tall.
"Daddy!" Violet yelled, jumping into his chest. He caught her, nearly falling over in his sleep-deprived state, but managed to hug her tight and set her down.
"Hey, Vi. Sorry we had to wake you up so early. You're not too tired, are you?"
"I'm f-ine," she said, yawning large and rubbing her eyes.
Tails looked up as Sonic and Amy approached and nodded at them. "Thanks for picking up Vi on such short notice."
"Anytime," Sonic said. Clapping his hands and turning left and right, he grinned wide. "So, where's the little girl? Vi told me she was getting a little sister."
"Er, right," Tails glanced at his daughter's eager, cute face. "I told her that." He moved closer to Sonic, his voice lowering to a whisper. "Dude, help me. It's a boy."
"Yeah, kinda already knew that."
Tails groaned and returned to Violet, unsure what to do, but knowing he had to face the music about this. Or rather, the screaming and shouting that surely would follow the revelation. "Hey, princess," he said, taking her hand and adopting an upbeat attitude. Maybe a bit of joy could counteract any anger she would feel. "You want to see Mommy?"
"Yeah!" she said and skipped ahead, pulling him along.
The whole way down the hall, Violet excitedly went on and on about how she couldn't wait to see her sister and how they would play together. "And I can show her my dolls and toys. And, and, and we can play outside. And, um, and-"
"Hey, Vi, what if the baby is a boy? Would you still want to do all that or would you be mad?" Sonic asked, giving Tails a knowing look.
"You're not making things any easier, Sonic," Tails said, cutting his eyes at his friend.
"I'm gonna be really mad," Violet said, completely missing Tails' warning to Sonic. "If the baby is a boy, I'm gonna tell Mommy to give him away. I want a little sister."
Tails continued to shoot Sonic a sour expression until they reached Cream's room. "We'll wait out here," Amy said and slapped her hand over Sonic's mouth before he could exacerbate the situation further.
Opening the door, Tails pointed Violet toward her mom, laying in bed, the new baby still bundled in her arms. Violet's eyes swelled and she leapt from her dad, running toward the bed. "Mommy!"
"Hi, Violet," Cream said, turning slightly to face her, her exhaustion evident all over her face. She shifted her arms, presenting the baby to Violet to view. As soon as he was visible, Violet slowed down and stopped a few feet from the bed, staring at Skye's tiny sleeping form.
Tails and Cream exchanged a quick glance. They were in the thick of it now. Nothing to do except power forward, introduce the pair, and hope for the best. "Come say hi to your little brother, sweetie," Cream said, stroking the curls on his head with her finger. "His name is Skye."
Their daughter stepped forward, propping her elbows on the bed's railing, but stayed where she was, studying this unexpected arrival. Tails moved behind her, gently encouraging Violet onward. "What are you waiting for, Vi?" She raised her head to him. "Go say hi."
Slowly, she climbed into the bed beside Cream, sitting back on her knees and watching Skye. Several long moments passed. Violet's face was a complete blank and Tails couldn't get any sort of read on her. But he kept ready to snatch Violet away at a moment's notice just in case.
Lifting her small hands, Violet reached out for the baby and Tails twitched. However, rather than throw a tantrum, she said, "I wanna hold him."
Cream smiled and sat up straighter. "Okay."
"R-Really?" Tails asked as Cream pulled Violet closer, wrapping her arms around both her children to support them. She shifted Skye's weight from her own arms to Violet's outstretched ones, then wrapped a hand around Violet's, helping her hold Skye close. I hope you know what you're doing Cream.
"Yes, really," Cream said, beckoning Tails to join them. "Look, she's fine."
That she was. Violet was surprisingly careful with the baby, ensuring that he stayed still and comfortable while she held him. "Wow, you're doing good," he said to Violet, sitting down as his own exhaustion started to catch up with him. "I wasn't expecting this today," he said low under his breath.
"Are Sonic and Amy here?" Cream asked.
"Yes, they're outside waiting to meet Skye too," he said. "But," he watched Violet lean closer to Skye, "I think they'll be fine waiting a bit longer."
Cream adjusted Violet's hands and helped her into a better position. "Be careful with his head, honey." She moved her own hand slowly, and Violet joined her, rocking the baby back and forth. "See? A little brother's not so bad. He likes being in your arms."
Finally, Violet's face broke into a small grin and she said, "Okay, we'll keep him."
"Glad you approve," Tails said.
Leaning back against her mom, Violet held Skye up to her face, whispering to him, "I'm your big sister, Violet. That means I'm gonna watch out for you, Skye."
Skye murmured in his sleep and nuzzled into Violet's chest. Tails closed his eyes, happy for this new addition to their family, and fondly thinking of the days to come.
