In the end Desmond had decided to follow Hadvar. He had seemed to be the more level headed between the two men.
"If you want the chests should have some armor you can try on and there are weapons on the wall as well. You may get lucky and find some currency as well. Let when you are ready and we can move on" Hadvar said as he shut the door behind them.
Desmond nodded and ended up finding several gold coins. He decided that at least for now his regular day clothes would be adequate. He did grab a sword and scabbard as he did not want to give away the fact that he had a secret weapon just yet, it hadn't been taken this first capture but he doubted that in the future if he was captured he would be as lucky especially if he was seen using it.
"Are you ready to move on?" Hadvar finally asked, sensing that Desmond's exploration of the small room was complete.
"I am." The stranger said shortly.
Hadvar pulled a lever which allowed the wooden gate to be pulled into the floor and granted them access to the rest of the fortress. They did have to pass through a room where they were ambushed by two blue clad warriors and they were quickly dispatched.
They quietly walked down the large tower steps and were suddenly cut off and forced to go through a small room to the right. Where they were met with two men in blue armor. Before Desmond could try to reason with them the two were already attacking so he was forced to draw his sword. Desmond used the sword to block the war ax and pushed his attacker back before taking a swing at the man's torso, which he dodged. Desmond rolled out of the way of another blow that would have split his skull. Desmond rolled to a stop bringing his sword up and making it like he was going for the left knee and at the last second he stabbed up catching the man in the gut. His eyes widened in shock before Desmond pulled the sword out and allowed the man to fall.
When the light left his eyes Desmond bent and closed the man's eyes repeating the words he heard Ezio say a hundred times during his time in the animus.
Hadvar, having finished his own battle and raiding the various potions from the room, came over and asked Desmond what he said.
"It means rest in peace. Where I am from we have a device that allows you to relive the memories of our ancestors. Mine were all assassins fighting a hidden war for the freedom of all humanity. One of my ancestors would honor every kill he made and it just seemed right to do." Desmond explained.
Hadvar was taken off guard not expecting the man to be an assassin, but when Desmond went on to explain about the brotherhood vs the templars he couldn't help but respect the man, and his ancestors, more. He knew he would be welcome in the Dark Elves culture, and even in the stormcloak ranks, loathe as he was to admit it.
They then left the room and made it to a torture dungeon to see the tail end of a battle between the too torturers and another small group of blue clad soldiers Desmond picked up a book that shocked him when he went to read it before it disintergrated. He also was able to grab some more of the gold coins and some lockpicks. He also picked up a black book with a silver dragon on the cover and some titled "History of the Empire" He had the first couple volumes from the first room they were in.
They managed to make it through a hall of cells, and they came to a cavern where an ambush of the blue clad warriors that Hadvar and the others in red leather armor referred to as stormcloaks.
Desmond slipped into the training he had gotten, unknowingly, from Altair and Ezio so he could effectively fight the stormcloak while dodging the arrows that were being shot across the room. Thankfully they had formed a small group so it wasn't just himself and Hadvar that were fighting the equally small group. Not that Desmond couldn't take care of a small army alone, but that didn't mean he wanted to do so.
Once all of the stormcloaks were taken care of the few imperials that had joined them in the torture chamber elected to stay behind and guard the way for other imperial soldiers trying to escape the rampaging dragon outside. This turned out to be a good thing though because as Hadvar crossed the draw bridge that he had lowered several rocks fell from the ceiling causing the bridge to collapse and their waiting had saved the other's lives.
They made their way through a series of tunnels that led to a spider nest with the biggest spiders Desmond had ever seen. All Desmond could think was 'kill it. Kill it with fire,' and to his surprise a plume of flames left his free palm and burnt the spider in front of him to a crisp.
"What the hell was that?" Desmond asked after the last spider was utterly and completely destroyed.
"Those were frostbite spiders, I've seen bigger ones to be honest. And it also seems that you have the ability to wield magic. I would go to the college of Winterhold in order to hone your skills when you can." Hadvar explained before leading them through another tunnel where they found a bear asleep. Hadvar handed Desmond an extra bow and some arrows before quietly giving the other man the option of sneaking by. Desmond chose the second option not wanting to deal with an enraged bear at the moment.
They easily snuck past the cave bear and out into the open, and downright freezing, Skyrim air just to have to duck behind a rock as the overgrown lizard flew off towards a mountain range.
"Come on, we have to warn Riverwood. We can't let them deal with a dragon unprepared." Hadvar said, practically pulling Desmond with him.
Desmond had no problem with this request, he had no clue where he was, where to go, or even what to do with himself and until he could figure out the land he may as well go along with the other man and even help out the locals.
They passed three stones that Hadvar told were called standing stones, the three they passed were specifically called guardian stones. As he described the blessings of each pillar Desmond decided to forgo those as he did not need any more help learning at least weaponry or sneaking and he wasn't sure he cared to devote much time to learning magic.
The duo only came across a couple of easy to kill wolves before they entered the small village at the foot of the mountain that the dragon had taken off to.
Hadvar led his new acquaintance to his uncle's black smith shop and the two took turns explaining what happened in Helgen and the misunderstanding of Desmond's capture.
Shortly after the two had finished their tale Advar asked Desmond if he would go and alert the Jarl in the nearby city of Whiterun for a detachment of guards. Desmond shrugged and said he would but he wasn't sure how to get there. The older man looked at him curiously before explaining that all he had to do was follow the road and where it branches off go to the left then stay straight. He explained he would pass the Honningbrew Meadery two farms and then on the right would be a road past the stables but by that point it would be really easy to get into the city.
Desmond decided to head there now and hopefully make it by dark, judging by the sun it was currently about noon time. It took Desmond several hours to make his way to the city gate where the guards told him as he did not live there he could not enter.
"Listen I have had a really long day and Advar of Riverwood asked that I come to ask the Jarl for help to deal with any dragons that may attack them.
The guards shared a look through their helmets before deciding that given the state of the request and the situation, the very reason that the city was on lock down, that they would allow this stranger to enter the city. They were also helpful in telling him how to get to Dragons Keep, the home and court of the Jarl.
Stars had begun to dot the sky but the moon had not yet risen when Desmond entered the keep. He was confronted by a dark skinned woman with the pointed ears of an elf as he approached the throne.
She demanded he leave but looking her directly in her red eyes he explained why he was here and that he was a survivor of Helgen. This got through to her and she allowed him to approach the Jarl, who he told his story to a third time. There was a minor discussion between the Jarl and his two advisers when Desmond relayed the request for aid in Riverwood. Eventually the Jarl's care for his people won against his stewards' misgivings about the reaction from the neighboring Jarl.
The Jarl gifted Desmond with a piece of armor and then asked if he would be willing to help his court mage with his research into the dragons.
"I will hear the request but then I would like to find an inn and rest before heading out in the morning if that is ok with you my Jarl?" Desmond said.
"Absolutely, the Bannered Mare in the market is the best place for one to rest their head." The Older man said before leading him to the court wizard. Once the wizard had described his request Desmond explained what his plan was but he would have this dragon hearthstone to him as soon as possible.
Desmond then took the Jarl's advice and made for the recommended inn where he spent 30 coins to rent the room for three nights. This left him with a further forty coins from his scavenging that he had picked up from Ezio. After a dinner of simple venison stew and a bottle of mead he headed to bed for his first night in this strange land.
