So I've been marathoning Team Galaxy, which is a great show, and something has always bugged me. Josh and his dad. I swear it's like Principal K doesn't even care about his son sometimes. I get that the episodes are short but seriously. So I wrote this to alleviate my frustration.
Set after episode 9, Psycho Cycles
"Josh, could you wait a moment?" Josh paused behind Brett. They'd just been dismissed, what did his dad want now? Then again his dad had asked him to stay instead of ordered.
"Sure dad. What's up?" He said, going back into the room and standing in front of the desk. Principal Kirkpatrick wasn't looking at him, he was staring out the window, hands behind his back.
"Joshua..." He began and Josh knew his butt was going to get reamed. "Promise me you won't ever pull a stunt like that again." Josh stared blankly at his father's back. "Promise me Joshua."
"Sure I promise." Josh said uncertainly. His father shifted slightly. "I'll just go then." He half turned around when there was a rushing sound and suddenly, strong arms were wrapped around him.
"Please Joshua, I don't want to be in that position again." Principal Kirkpatrick whispered. Josh wanted to roll his eyes.
"Yeah I know. I'm your kid, I should set an example and not break the big rules." He said. He got tired of his dad reminding him that he should behave better. He just wanted to kick back and have fun. He felt himself being turned to face his father. He was expecting a look of disappointment or even a little frustration. Instead he was surprised by the look of concern and worry on his father's face.
"That isn't what I meant." Principal Kirkpatrick said softly. He gently stroked Josh's hair. "I know I can be a grouch and a pain to you but I was so scared. I didn't know where you were, why you'd been taken, what you were being made to do." Josh had never seen his dad like this, except for a select few occasions.
"I'm fine dad, really it was just racing. And throwing something." Josh said as if brushing it off. A look flashed across his father's face.
"Something you were mind controlled into doing. This time racing was all they were interested in." He said sternly. Then his face softened. "That's not the point I'm making. I don't want you to get hurt. I worry about you Josh." There was a pause. "I don't want to lose you." Josh stared at his dad. Emotional moments like this were rare with his dad. But they were his favourite moments.
"Okay dad, I promise I won't use myself as bait." Josh said. He hugged his dad tightly and his dad hugged back. Josh pressed his face into his dad's shirt and breathed in the familiar scent of old spice, coffee and ink. His dad hugged him just a little bit tighter as if he was trying to hold the moment forever. Then the door burst open and they sprang apart.
"What are you doing here Josh?" Bobby asked with a sneer. "Getting your butt handed to you?" Josh locked his jaw.
"That's enough Bobby." Principal Kirkpatrick said. He turned to Josh. "You're dismissed." Josh nodded and left. He couldn't help but feel slightly pissed off at Bobby for interrupting one of the few family moments he got. But he smiled. Best hug in a while.
