Chapter 8

I hadn't intended to punch him.

Not when Emmett had texted me to ask if we could meet up or when I got to the hotel. I did it when I saw him walking towards me in the hotel lobby. Thankfully his fiancée wasn't with him this time.

When Emmett didn't hit me back so I knew the message was received and understood.

"Alright, alright, nothing see here, people," Emmett said loudly, looking behind me. "It's how we greet each other. I'm a masochist."

People had stopped what they were doing to see what was happening. Slowly they went back to what they were doing, a few still sending surreptitious glances our way.

"You deserved it," I muttered, shoving my aching fist in my pocket.

"Never said that I didn't," he remarked. "We should do, the receptionist doesn't look happy."

I twisted around to look at the desk behind me and sure enough the man behind the desk was eyeing us suspiciously, one hand on the telephone.

"Let's go," I said gruffly, as I started walking toward the door.

"Where's your fiancée?"

"She's asleep."

There was a diner across the street, where Bella was waiting for us. I'd asked to wait while I went to meet Emmett in the hotel. I'd picked her up in the morning, knowing she would want to talk to Emmett.

As we entered the diner I turned to Emmett and spoke quietly.

"Don't tell her I punched you."

I didn't know if she would rip me a new one or copy my actions and hit him too. And she did not need a sore hand.

I saw him nod in the corner of my eye as we joined Bella in the booth. I slide into the seat beside her as Emmett went to sit opposite.

"Hey, Bella," Emmett said in greeting. "I didn't know you were coming. It's great to see you again."

Bella smiled at him, though it didn't reach her eyes, like me she was wishing that it was under better circumstances.

"It's good to see you too. You're bigger than I remember."

"I eat well." He picked up a menu from the table and waved it in the air. "And I think we should eat before this conversation gets deeper. I have a feeling we'll need the energy.

Bella and I also picked up our menus and chose something. I wasn't much of a morning eater, but Emmett was right. We would need our energy. Bella and I quickly placed our orders when the waiter arrived. I felt sorry for him and a little embarrassed when Emmett started placing his orders. I had to laugh in both amazement and disbelief as he began to list off half the menu.

"I'll have what they're having, and the omelet with tomatoes, cheese and pepper, no onion. Er- make that two omelets, please. Are the paninis also part of the breakfast menu?"

The waiter shook his head and he quickly scribbled Emmett's demands in his notebook in attempt to keep up with Emmett.

"Then… I'll the French toast, fruit salad and Belgian waffles with ice-cream. No change that to chocolate spread. No wait, can I have both chocolate spread and ice cream? Make it Vanilla flavored ice cream though, some warm milk and tepid water to drink."

Emmett paused for a moment reading over the menu, then finally put it down. The waiter was quick to snatch it up and tuck it under his arm and away.

"I think you just cleared out the kitchen for the rest of the week," I said, grinning at him.

"Not true, they still have their paninis," Bella replied. "But at this rate, we'll be here until lunch, maybe then the kitchen will be cleared out."

Emmett rolled his eyes in a playful manner, then smiled.

"You're supposed to eat breakfast like a king, it's the most important meal."

Bella snorted. "Okay but tepid water?"

"It's good for you!" Emmett said defensively.

We kept to the lighter topics as we ate, not wanting to spoil the meal. I waited until Emmett was down to just his waffles, French toast and tepid water to broach the real reason we'd met up.

"I think it's time we talk about the elephant in the room."

"You mean Emmett? Because he's the biggest thing in this room," Bella replied with a laugh.

"And I know you're not calling Rosie an elephant because she would kill you if she ever found out." Emmett held out his palm to Bella. She met it half way with her own.

I slapped my own palm to my forehead.

"Be serious guys," I hissed at them.

Emmett straightened in his seat. "You're right, let's get down to business. I asked to meet you because I want to know about Rosie's fiancé."

My hands clenched in to fists and I thought about Roy. Bella scooched closer to me, sensing my distress. I reached out for her hand under that table, needing her touch. She took my hand into hers, squeezing it gently. I inhaled through my nose, willing myself to relax.

"His name is Roy King, but we call him King Shithead. He works at the same company as Rosalie." Bella began. "They dated for about eight months before he proposed."

"Okay, what did he do to earn that name?" Emmett asked .

"Just before I saw you in the club I saw Roy there too, with another woman."

I squeezed Bella's hand harder, thankful I'd not witnessed what she had, while Emmett cursed loudly, earning a few stares from other customers.

"That's not the worst part," I said bitterly.

Emmett gawked at me. "What's the worst part?"

"Rosalie already knew and she still wants to marry him," said Bella.

"What the actual fuck? She loves him that much?"

"She doesn't love him at all," I said. "I don't know why she's putting herself through this."

"I do," Bella said. "She wants two things in life, children and you."

She looked pointedly at Emmett as she said the you part.

"And you were the only person who could convince her not to marry him, but after last night… let's just say that ship has sailed." I shook my head thinking about how everything seemed to spiraling out of control.

"I thought she was happy. She was getting married for goodness sake, she moved on." Emmett covered his face with hand, silent, thinking. He released his face, and held the edge of the table with his hands, the rest of his food now long forgotten.

"I proposed to Irina because I thought Rosie moved on."

Bella and I glanced at each other. So, he was still in love with my sister, now we were sure about that. I could help but feel a spark of hope in the cloud of gloom that seemed to have surrounded us since Rosalie announced her engagement.

"I always thought once I finished med school and did my internship that I would return to Forks, and work at the hospital. I'd assumed Rosie and I would then get back together but…"

"What?" Bella said. "Why didn't you tell her?"

Emmett shrugged.

"I didn't know how things would work out so I didn't want to tie her down to me. Then I heard that she was dating someone, so I started dating too. Then my parents got an invitation to her wedding. When they told me, I got shitfaced. I was drunk for days.

"I'd been dating Irina for about two months at the time. I went out one day, still a bit drunk, and got a ring and proposed to Irina. I guess she's more invested in the relationship, because she said yes. I didn't expect that but I… I wanted to move on. I'd broken up with Rosalie so that she could move on if she wanted to."

With his words, a sense of dread and familiarity was starting to build up in the pit of my stomach.

"Wait you broke up with Rosalie. I thought it was a mutual decision," Bella said.

"No, I broke up with her."

My heart grew heavier, I couldn't speak because I feared I knew what he would say next.

"If you still love her, then why?" Bella asked.

"I did it for her. It was hard having a long-distance relationship and I didn't know when we could really be together again. Sure, I had a plan in mind but that might not have worked."

My heart sank, and I pulled my hand out from Bella's slamming my fist onto the table.

"Don't you think you should have told her about your plan? Look at her now trapped in a loveless relationship, settling for someone she knows doesn't love her. Does that look like the best thing for her to you?" I shouted.

"I didn't know, I didn't mean for that to happen."

"You are the reason she thinks she is unlovable. You saw her yesterday; did you see the look in her eyes when she realized your fiancée was there? That's the look we see every day."

"I'm sorry, I didn't-"

"You're sorry?" I glared at him. "What are you sorry for exactly? Breaking her heart, being the reason the feels compelled to be in a loveless marriage? Trapping another woman in a loveless relationship, while you try and get over the woman you really love?"

Emmett ducked his head, staring at the table.

"Edward, you need to calm down." Bella placed a hand on thigh, trying to soothe me.

For once her touch served to irritate me rather than soothe me. I wanted to feel this anger, I needed to feel it. She was part of the reason of the reason I felt like this and she should know it. So I pushed her hand off and I stood up.

"I don't get you people. What makes you think we Masens are too weak and pathetic for long distance relationship?" I turned my glare from Emmett to Bella. "Why do you get to make all the decisions for us?"

I knew now how my sister must have felt and to top it off, her relationship was ripped away from her over the phone.

"Edward, I-"

I cut her off before she could say anything else.

"No, Bella, I don't want to hear it. I'm done chasing you."

"Edward, that's not fair, you know-"

"Don't talk to me about fair. I've had enough of you stringing me along. Surely you know how I feel about you by now. I wear it on my sleeve, but I have no idea how I feel about me."

Bella's eyes were glistening with unshed tears now. That blow was much worse than my aching fist from earlier. It tore my heart up to know that I was the reason for them. It was all I could do not pull her into my arms and kiss them away, while begging for her forgiveness.

I closed my eyes so I didn't have to see her anymore and steeled myself. I directed my glare at Emmett when I opened my eyes again. I couldn't look at Bella when she was like this. I would give in to my feeling for her again. I was tired of the scraps of affection that I was constantly fighting to get from her.

"Since you two are clearly the love gurus here I'll let you sort out the messes you created."

I reached for my wallet in my back pocket and pulled out some cash and placed it on the table. I spared Emmett one last glance and walked away
