One-Shot: Incredibles Kiss

The RV jolted to a stop perfectly in a parking space. Inside the vehicle, everything slammed back to a stop with a resounding crash.

Mr. Incredible sighed heavily in relief. "Is... everybody O.K. back there?" he asked, looking to his kids.

"Super duper, Dad!" Violet laughed.

"Let's do that again!"Dash giggled.

Screams suddenly split the air and at the intersection just beyond, the imposing Omnidroid robot continued its rampage through the city. Mr. Incredible's resolve kicked in. Showtime. "All right. All of you wait here and stay hidden. I'm going in."

But he was barely out of the RV and steps away from it before he felt an elastic arm touch his shoulder and spin him back.

"While what? I watch helplessly from the sidelines? I don't think so!" Elastigirl, his wife, snapped.

Mr. Incredible sighed. Were they really doing this now? There was no room for argument. "I'm asking you to wait with the kids!" he ordered more firmly.

"And I'm telling you - not a chance. You're my husband; I'm with you - for better or worse." The last came out in a growl from his wife, as she cupped his jaw to make him face her. She had always taken seriously the vow that they made when they got married, despite the danger of being Supers.

Mr. Incredible shrugged off her touch. "I have to do this alone!"

"What is this to you - playtime?" Elastigirl demanded.

"No!"

"So you can be Mr. Incredible again?"

"Then what? What is it?"

"I'm not... I'm not..."

"Not what?"

"I'm not strong enough!" her husband finally admitted.

"Strong enough. And this will make you stronger?" Elastigirl refused to let up.

"Yes. No!" Mr. Incredible fumbled for an answer.

"That's what this is? Some sort of work-out?"

"I CAN'T LOSE YOU AGAIN!" he finally exploded, grabbing her by the arms and shaking her.

The words - the truth - hung in the air like thick smog. Mr. Incredible hung his head in what was almost shame. He could be the strongest person in the world, but when it came to his family, he couldn't even keep his own emotions in check.

"Not again," he breathed. "I'm... I'm not strong enough."

Elastigirl stared at him in shock and sympathy. Reaching for him, she slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply, taking his lips in between hers. After a moment, she drew away.

"If we work together, you won't have to be," she reminded him gently.

"I don't know what will happen," he protested.

She came back with a phrase he had once used on her when they got married. "Hey, we're Supers! What could happen?"

Violet's scream shook them to their core. And sprung them into action. They would defeat this robot. As husband and wife. As a family. Together.
