General Clayton 'Hawk' Abernathy took a deep breath as he looked at the files spread across his desk. Cobra was becoming a very serious problem and he had been granted the authority to put together a special task force to handle it. He had a very good idea on who he wanted to lead the task force but it could cause problems later on down the road.
Unfortunately personal issues weren't something he was allowed to take under consideration perhaps…perhaps this would be for the best anyways. If left to his own devices Hi-Tech wasn't likely to make a move and Duke certainly wasn't as he didn't even know about the issue.
Letting out a sigh he picked up the phone and dialed the phone number he had been staring at for the past two hours. "May I talk to Sergeant Hauser please?"
Two days later Conrad 'Duke' Hauser found himself face-to-face with General Hawk, one of the more infamous military leaders. His notoriety was good or bad, depending on who you talked to. Personally Duke preferred to come to his own conclusion on the matter but suspected that they would get along just fine.
"Thank you for seeing me," Hawk tugged at his tie, looking rather irritated with it.
"Not a problem, sir," Duke hid a smile even as he resisted the urge to tug at his own necktie.
"I'm going to cut right to the chase; have you ever heard of Cobra?"
"Can't say that I have, sir," Duke was lying and they both knew it. If you were in the military and you didn't know who Cobra was then something was seriously wrong with you.
"They're a terrorist organization," Hawk explained. "At first they mostly did low key stuff, things that wouldn't seem out of character for low life thugs. However, a couple of months ago, one of our tech specialists intercepted a message that revealed Cobra's plans to attack one of our out of the way weapons depot. Headquarters thought it was a hoax so they only sent a small contingent to check it out. Only one man survived and he confirmed that Cobra had been behind the attack. After that we had no choice but to start treating them like a serious threat. Our specialist managed to intercept a few more messages until they figured out what was happening and got a tech specialist of their own. We haven't been getting much chatter since then but we have been able to determine that they're adding to their ranks with androids.
"Androids?" Duke raised an eyebrow.
"Unfortunately," Hawk sighed. "We haven't been able to find out much more than that except that they're called BATS. We're working on trying to figure out who created the original specs so we can have a starting point, maybe even backtrack a few key Cobra members while we're at it."
"That's all well and good, General, but what does that have to do with me?" Duke had a feeling he knew where this was going.
"I've been authorized to create a special task force to deal with them and I want you to lead them. No more than ten people but you can pick out whoever you want to join. The only one you can't pick out is the tech specialist and I've already assigned one to the team.
"You do know I'm only twenty-three," Duke pointed out.
"True but you've certainly proven yourself capable not to mention you have a history of using unorthodox methods to accomplish your missions and to catch these snakes you're going to have to be able to think on your feet.
"I can pick anyone I want?" Duke confirmed.
Hawk nodded. "Everyone but the tech specialist but seeing as how he's the one who first intercepted Cobra I didn't figure you'd care."
"I'd still like to talk to him."
"That can easily be arranged," hawk grinned. "In fact if you want I can give you a tour of the base you'll be staying at and you can meet Hi-Tech since he's currently living there."
"Sounds like a plan," Duke stood up and shook the General's extended hand.
"Be here at 0800 hours tomorrow and welcome to GI Joe, soldier," Hawk sat back down after Duke had left, mentally breathing a sigh of relief until he remembered that he now had to inform Hi-Tech of what was going on so the poor kid didn't have a massive anxiety attack when they showed up. "Hopefully this will work out good for everyone," he muttered as he picked up the phone once more.
A/N: I apologize for the shortness of this chapter but the next chapter will be much longer, I promise. I make no promises on when and how often this story will be updated but my goal is to post a chapter every week. Also I don't care if it goes with canon or timelines as this is fanfiction which means that I can write whatever I want.
