Chapter 72: If This Be My Fate…

"I want to drink."

"No."

"Come on, just a taste."

"I said no."

"But you said you'd save me!"

This is an esoteric situation for Izuku. Here he stands in front of a jail cell before inmate Himiko Toga. Around her neck is a shock collar for reasons not necessary to point out. She gives him the thirstiest of looks while gripping the bars.

Only twenty-four hours have passed since the battle against Carnage. After capturing Toga and destroying Carnage, the heroes have locked her away while focusing their attention on capturing the remaining criminals, including the equally notorious Touya Todoroki.

"Toga, I'm here for a different reason that might help you." He digs into his utility belt and pulls out a bullet. Well, it's more like a dart than a bullet. "You have a Quirk that lets you transform into anyone whose blood you drink. But, it gives you uncontrollable cravings whenever you see blood. It's the only reason you would bother to fall for a loser like me."

"Oh, Izuku. Don't be so hard on yourself!"

"It makes sense though that Quirks come with side effects, and our society has kind of failed people like you and me. Busujima has to let loose his gas or it kills him so I can only imagine how bad it must be for you."

He then shows her the dart. Looking at it, she realizes what he's implying. "You want to remove my Quirk and set me free from these cravings."

To that, he shakes his head. "I want you to make that choice. After how these things were made, I would rather have them destroyed. Their existence is a product of all the torture Eri went through, and I don't want her knowing that they are still around."

He then gives a glance to the side. "That said, I understand that it can help someone like you. Which is why I am asking if you would like this to be used on you."

Toga pauses, thinking of the ramifications. After a brief moot, she says, "I took those from the Black Cougar and thought about using them. Whether on myself or someone else. And, I keep thinking about what it'd be like taking away what was mine."

She stares deep into Izuku's eyes. "What was it like being Quirkless?"

Silent, Izuku looks down to think about that. But before he can respond, she says, "I want to be me, to be honest to myself and live life as I like. And giving away my Quirk will destroy that. I'll just live a horrible life like you did. Can I really have a good life giving that up?"

Izuku checks his brain before adding, "You have a point. Being a criminal you'll already have it hard. But-"

"Then again, you gave up One for All, and you don't regret that," she says, interrupting him. "So, I think I will be okay with this."

With that, Izuku takes out the dart. "But, I want to drink your blood first." Her crimson eyes stare into his soul as she says this. "Give me a taste, and then stab me. I want the last bit I taste to be from you."

Groaning a little, he looks down at his wrist while taking into account the pain that'll come with this. He stretches his arm out to her, allowing the girl to reach through her jail cell. As those fangs sink into his flesh, he winces in pain for a brief moment until the pain wears off. After a two-second slurp session, she releases him.

Crimson splatters across her face and her lips are immediately lapped up by her vampiric tongue. She drowns in pleasure from the taste. The sounds she makes are just as strong as if they were made by Momo. "So good…"

"Alright, are you ready?" he asks, hoping that his arm doesn't get a scar from this.

Toga holds out her arm, allowing the spider boy to grip it. He then lightly stabs her wrist with the dart. As the contents enter her system, she flinches in pain as well before it fully takes effect. Her eyes widen as a feeling of emptiness washes over her.

She pulls her arm back as he extracts the dart, allowing Izuku to cup the used item. But as the blond girl looks at Izuku, she realizes something. He has somehow lost appeal.

"So… this is what it means to be normal…" She laughs a little. "No, that's not true. Having a Quirk would be normal. Now I'm just as estranged as you were."

"It wasn't that bad…" says Izuku, surprising himself by how casual she went with it. More than that, he kind of lied.

With that over with, the spider boy leaves the cell. The dart is still in his hand as he clenches it, holding it back so he doesn't destroy it. That's something he needs fire for, or a sanitation bin.

Swapping pockets on his belt, he pulls out the last dart. There is still one more person he can use this on, and unlike with Toga, he has no qualms against using this on him. Especially if it takes away his powers, that enhanced body of his, and the condition that's killing him.

Making his way to Tomura Shigaraki's private cell, Izuku meets the guard. After being allowed entry, the spider enters and comes face to face with the steel-bound villain. Recognizing his presence, Shigaraki raises his head and stares.

"Well, look who finally came to see me." His words are drenched in callous sarcasm, eyes a crimson River Styx flowing with malice. "Izuku Midoriya."

"Shigaraki." Izuku narrows his eyes in a form of spite.

"Have you finally succumb to your hatred and decided to kill me?"

"Not at all."

Izuku holds out the dart. "Heh? So you stole it back. Which means Toga failed."

"You have failed. You and your plans have failed." He tenses up staring at Shigaraki, doing his best to control his dislike. "Chisaki tormented Eri to make these, but you gave him the okay and the funding. It's only fitting that your end comes here."

"Yes, of course, you'd excuse yourself with that," he replies, chuckling under raspy air. "Always trying to find the solution where you can have everything you want. Never do you ever have to make a sadistic choice."

Izuku remains taciturn as he continues. "You stop me, and then what? I just sit in this cell, stripped of everything I've worked my whole life to build, while you return Japan to the Sanzu river of souls it surrounds itself with. Everyone drowning day by day in the despair of oppression they were almost free of, forced to believe in another being of false peace simply because he's dressed in bright colors."

He chuckles now. "Nothing will change. You have destroyed their one chance to make the world better for them."

Izuku finally exhales, concluding a beat of silence that seemed to have gone on forever. "It's not the world that needs to be better; it's its governments. I know just what it's like to live like garbage. But I don't intend to return things back to normal. I want to make it better too, and I have a few ideas that can make it work."

Shigaraki continues laughing. "And you think they'll listen to you? The Amazing Useless?" That gets him to face fault.

"Good point. The Amazing Deku has long worn out its welcome." He looks down at his dart. "I overhauled myself to be more like All Might, and that backfired. I've clumsily made a bit of a name for myself, but people will listen to me if they know who I really am."

Now more confident than any boner has ever given him, Izuku proudly states, "With Toga free and all of the Noumu you enslaved captured, all that's left is to capture the rest of your army of sympathizers and fix our country from the ground up. By stabilizing our foundation, we won't need to spend our lives patching cracks and whatever slips through them."

Smiling now, Izuku approaches Shigaraki. "Whether you think it or not, the world is going to change."

He then applies the injection.

Elsewhere…

Down in the cavernous regions of Tokyo's sewers, he slumps against the concrete. This is the fire villain Touya Todoroki. He sighs while drinking some water.

"Stupid Toga." He sips his drink while taking his mind off of it. There are more important things for him to do.

Over in central Tokyo is Astro Corporation, in smoke. Up at the highest point of the building rests Hitomi Yatsu, a box in one hand. She's dressed in the same battle outfit she wore before, with those mechanical arms resting behind her.

She opens her eyes while looking around, using the metal arms to push herself up. Midair, she stretches her limbs while continuing her AO scan. "Good."

Taking the box, she opens it up to reveal a deceased red and black spider. "This is the last of the venom spiders they had made. Now I can get out of Japan and start over."

Closing the box, she uses her arms to climb down the dilapidated building. Reaching the streets, she continues to make her way to the docks. Passing by she spots something strange in the air.

"A bat? In daylight?" It flaps a bit before diving straight for her. "With rabies!"

Her metal arm catches it before it can get closer. In her grasp, a red liquid shoots out of its mouth and pierces her throat.

All goes black for Hitomi, her mind awakening in a void.

Where am I?

"Your mind." Whoa! Who said that?

A figure made of red slime forms before me. "I did."

You?! Aren't you-

"I'm the Symbiote known as Carnage." So you are alive…

"I slipped a piece of myself into the ground to avoid complete destruction. But that's behind me."

And escaped into a bat in the sewers this whole time. … on that, how did you fail?

"We were tricked." Carnage glares at an image forged by my mind of Midoriya. "He had the power to control the Noumu."

He did?! "I wasn't sure, but it lined up with what Shigaraki said that one time; Muscular was attacked and repelled by the first of the Spider Noumu, which allowed the spider to escape. They didn't have any explanation, but those Hero Slayer Noumu-"

All had the same spider formula, which allowed him to control them. "Don't interrupt me! … okay, yeah, I'm done."

Then there's even more reason for me to leave Japan. "Leave? Don't you want your revenge?"

… yes.

Nothing would please me more than to kill him. But, I can't do it the way I am now. Teaming up on him only failed, and now he'll have a group of friends. Even you and Shigaraki couldn't do it, so I'd stand no chance. That's why I'm leaving Japan before order is restored and bide my time elsewhere.

… will you come with me?

"Why the hell not?"

Back to reality, Hitomi blinks before recovering. She sighs as her body adjusts. With the bat loose from her hand, it flies away as she laughs. Her tentacles extend to lift her high off the ground. "Next time!"

With that, the spider woman leaves.

As evil makes their plan in the background, Momo is with Shoto after being discharged from the medic ward of UA High's campus.

She adjusts her cape before asking, "How are you doing, right now?"

"Better…" he replies, his mind already troubled. "My brother is still out there trying to kill me, and my family came by earlier to tell me the history about him."

She sighs realizing how uncomfortable that may feel. "And… Endeavor?"

"He's finally awake, about to make a statement."

The duo passes down a hall and spots Izuku coming their way. His hands look as if something has been crushed between the fingers. "Oh, hi guys!"

"Izuku!" Momo says before going over to him.

After a quick hug and kiss, the couple glances at their third wheel, remembering he's there. Of course, the king of awkwardness stares at them blankly before saying, "Nice to have you back."

"I'm still not back yet. My license, after all," Izuku says jokingly, remembering his retirement and the inability to get it back.

"You can get it back after we fix Japan."

"I really hope so." Still holding Momo, his eyes glance out the window as if all of Japan lies beyond those glass walls. "We have a lot of work to do."

"Speaking on that," says Shoto while approaching him. The spider boy releases Momo to face him properly. "Do you really wish to be a hero still after everything that's happened to you?"

A slight pause on his part, but Izuku still answers: "I've always wanted to be a hero. Sure, things haven't gone as ideally, but it's what I want, whether I'm worried if I'm good at it or not." He faces his hands. "Though, I have to wonder if you feel the same."

"I once did," he replies, shrugging as he thinks about his brother. "I keep thinking about what would happen if I gave up too. My family drama after all."

The two then look at each other, Izuku briefly laughing a bit. "I guess I'm not the only one who overthinks themselves."

"It's normal for me... but how is this? I'll stop second-guessing myself if you do."

With a beat, Izuku replies, "I will promise to try."

He waves that off. "No. You either do or you don't. There is no try, Deku."

"Was that a Star Wars quote?"

"... is that the tv show with the galactic warfare?"

"That's Stargate," Momo says, surprising them. "... I have hobbies."

Regardless, Izuku nods in agreement. "But, that's right. I'll do better as Spider-Man."

Confused by that statement, the two teens look at him and ask what he meant by that. He replies, "I'm changing my name. Actually, I still can't use Spider-Man. I'm gonna make up a new one."

Lightz: We now come to the final chapter next time. What that entails, you'll have to see. Be ready for it. And now, one last Omake.

- The Web for One -

I almost lost.

I had lived for so long and won so many battles that losing was once a foreign concept. In fact, I could count the number of defeats I had suffered on a single hand.

The first was losing my parents.

The second was losing my brother.

The third was losing my empire to Nana Shimura poisoning my son.

The fourth was to All Might. The first time; the second was more of an impromptu vacation.

And the fifth loss has come to me just now. My grandson Izuku had done what I calculated otherwise; he rejected One for All.

Through All for One, I had a parasitic mind on all who possessed it. I may not be immortal, but I can always move to a better body. That was my plan through my son, but Hisashi rejected using our power. He always pretended that he only used one Quirk to avoid any connection to me.

There was a second chance when I had my body damaged beyond repair, and since Izuku was Quirkless like his old man, there was Shigaraki. He both had a body I could usurp, and experiments to fix my new one in case that would end up failing. That's when luck would have it that Izuku would happen upon that experiment and become a spider mutant, and gain One for All.

And a new plan to take his body would commence, a plan I didn't need to even implement. He was just being himself, and he would become my vessel.

What I didn't plan for was him giving away that power. By doing so, my connection to him was weakened. The more he used One for All, the stronger my connection to his body would grow. I was almost lost.

Or so they think.

I found a new connection to go to. My thread for him was ruined, but I found a new thread that would lead to Izuku.

The multiverse is all for me.
