Josie leaves him in the eighties. Mitchell watches from his apartment as she hails a taxi cab. She's wearing his favorite platform heels and clutching a briefcase that was supposed to be an anniversary gift.
Josie doesn't publicly wear her disappointment, but he can see it in her awkward teetering. Her bags, clothes, shoes, and pictures still clutter up the apartment. Her coffee mug, dirty, sits beside the sink.
Now, move into the present day. Mitchell watches his coffee form a skin and listens to Anders snore. He does not know a woman named Josie. He cannot understand the obsession with drinking his coffee with just a splash of cold water from the tap.
Anders probably won't tug on his favorite platform shoes and grab that secret anniversary gift. He repeats this over and over.
He repeats this with every snore, rise, and fall of his chest, and tear that splashes into his coffee.
