Opening File: Professor Paradox
Professor Paradox is a time-traveling professor who can travel anywhere in space or time, within reason. While he forgot his true name from centuries being trapped in a separate reality, he now goes by the name 'Professor Paradox' after taking a liking to being referred to as such. At some point, Professor Paradox was working for Area 51. It is unknown what his job was exactly, but it had something to do with the alien prisoners there.
In the 1950s, Paradox, having discovered special properties in quartz crystals, received government funding to break a hole in the space-time continuum. However, a slight miscalculation, and an explosion accidentally caused by his panicked assistant Hugo, threw Paradox into the event horizon, where he remained for a hundred thousand years. He was displaced outside of time, where he didn't age, or have to sleep or eat; just exist. He went insane for a while, but then got bored and regained his sanity.
He gained complete understanding of the space-time continuum, though he forgot his original name in the process. Paradox used his understanding to travel across time, making different parts of history better for others. His abilities are not limited to this universe, having visited other universes and the space between them.
Opening File: Envy
Envy is the embodiment of Father's envy. Envy is genderless, and has the ability to shape-shift. This ability can be used to assume the form of any existing person (or original personas that Envy themself creates). They can even modify their own voice to directly copy others. Envy, who exists only to make humans suffer, bears more bitter resentment for humans than any other homunculus, and negatively treats with humans in the most personal and heartfelt manner. Their hatred for humans has an immense emotional and personal foundation greater than any of their siblings'.
Envy can easily be set off by insults due to their large and delicate ego, thus causing them to make mistakes. After their brother Pride, Envy is by far the cruelest Homunculus, joking around and delighting in human misery. Envy will kill without hesitation, usually playing on their target's emotions to have a psychological advantage, with no remorse for what they have done. Envy's only personal intention is to make humans fight each other and suffer.
Beneath this cruel and aggressive exterior, however, Envy is secretly jealous of humans' inner strength and the mutually beneficial friendships that they share, as most of Envy's kind show little real concern or emotional support for one another. This jealousy motivates Envy to hate and mistreat humans very personally; more personally, in fact, than any other homunculus.
Opening File: Gluttony
Gluttony is the embodiment of Father's gluttony. Often, he will be found eating a random person or creature's remains unless ordered to eat someone that poses a threat, or to remove evidence of the Homunculi's presence. He is typically in the company of Lust. Gluttony, although under normal circumstances is quite docile, is easily prone to bouts of frenzy in which he uncontrollably tries to eat whatever crosses his path, usually someone he has been given permission to eat; which as a result causes him to frequently ask Lust (or any other Homunculus that he is partnered with) if he can eat them beforehand. He even asks this question to the people he is fighting at that moment.
Gluttony also does not appear to share any of his siblings' disdain for humans, and appears to be unaware that the people he eats die permanently. Because of his childishness, lack of self-control and apparent innocence, Gluttony's intelligence is thus limited in regards to usefulness for his siblings and thus has to be 'babysat' by his more aware siblings. He also seems to share a close bond with his older sibling Lust whom he, prior to her death, was frequently partnered with.
Opening File: Operation Bagration
Operation Bagration was the codename for the 1944 Soviet Belorussian Strategic Offensive Operation, a military campaign fought between 23 June and 19 August 1944 in Soviet Byelorussia in the Eastern Front of World War II. The Soviet Union inflicted the biggest defeat in German military history by destroying 28 out of 34 divisions of Army Group Centre and completely shattered the German front line. It was the fifth deadliest campaign on the European war scene, killing around 450,000 soldiers.
On 23 June 1944, the Red Army attacked Army Group Centre in Byelorussia, with the objective of encircling and destroying its main component armies. By 28 June, the German Fourth Army had been destroyed, along with most of the Third Panzer and Ninth Armies. The Red Army exploited the collapse of the German front line to encircle German formations in the vicinity of Minsk in the Minsk Offensive and destroy them, with Minsk liberated on 4 July. With the end of effective German resistance in Byelorussia, the Soviet offensive continued further to Lithuania, Poland and Romania over the course of July and August.
The Red Army successfully used the Soviet deep battle and maskirovka (deception) strategies for the first time to a full extent, albeit with continuing heavy losses. Operation Bagration diverted German mobile reserves to the central sectors, removing them from the Lublin-Brest and Lvov–Sandomierz areas, enabling the Soviets to undertake the Lvov–Sandomierz Offensive and Lublin–Brest Offensive. This allowed the Red Army to reach the Vistula river and Warsaw, which in turn put Soviet forces within striking distance of Berlin, conforming to the concept of Soviet deep operations—striking into the enemy's strategic depths.
"How could this happen?!"
"How could a single human kill one of us?!"
"He humiliated us!"
"Lust…" Gluttony was sitting on the ground, bawling his eyes out at the fact that Lust was now dead.
"That damn human will pay for this!" Envy raged as he kicked a log so hard it crashed into another tree. "No one humiliates us and gets away with it! NOBODY!"
Both Envy and Gluttony froze at the sound of the familiar disembodied voice.
"Pride, is that you?" Envy called out, looking at any corner where his older brother might be hiding. "Why are you here?"
"Do not take that tone with me, Envy. I saw what happened. That single human killed our sister, Lust."
"You were here the whole time?...And you did nothing to help!?" Envy growled. "You could have murdered that bastard easily!"
"Killing him was not my assignment. It was yours. Now the seven have been reduced to five." Pride scolded.
"That was not our fault. No one told us how skilled he was. In fact, your informant told us if we had him cornered we could easily kill him." Envy retorted.
A shadow tendril shot out right past Envy's face and leaving a shallow cut on his cheek. Envy froze but then trembled in silent anger.
"Consider that strike one with me, Envy. Best mind your tone or you will know what happens on strike three."
Envy let out a quiet growl but said nothing else.
"All though you are right. Our informant told us that if he had been cornered in that village he'd have been easy to kill…And he was not alone. Someone else with him."
Gluttony was now sucking on his thumb, very nervous with Pride being so close and both of them having just failed.
"It seems someone else is working behind the scenes against us. That can be the only explanation. I also noticed that boy you spoke of earlier. He arrived just after you retreated."
"The alchemist kid?" Envy questioned.
"There is no doubt about it. He was led there and someone else was with Steven Deshain just before your attack." Pride's voice grew colder. "This cannot be allowed. Envy, Gluttony, return to the base at once so we can regroup. We must consider our next plan carefully."
"What happened here?"
As soon as they saw smoke Edward and Trisha rushed into the village, only to see it empty with a single gunman standing in the center of the carnage, all having gone quiet. On his part Steven Deschain holstered his guns and set about recovering his gear and looking for any food and supplies for himself and the surviving villagers.
"Are you a Hunter?" Trisha asked, putting her weapon away.
"And if I am not?" Steven rhetorically asked as he picked a case of bullets that he immediately put in his coat.
"I think you'd have better things to do than to scavenge." Trisha remarked.
"Not just for me." Steven remarked as he glanced through an empty house. "This village will no doubt be swarming with Grimm by nightfall. If you wish to live long enough to reach the nearest village you best find any leftover food or water that's still edible after this."
It wasn't unreasonable.
The entire village had been devastated in the attack by the three Homunculi. To risk staying here now, especially with the negative emotions likely to surface such as fear and anger from the survivors of the attack the Grimm were more than likely to come around sniffing.
They needed to get moving as soon as possible.
"All right." Trisha nodded and looked to Ed. "We better do as he says. Gather as many supplies as you can find."
Ed had wanted to argue but staring at the face of his own mother, dead or not completely killed any protests he might have had. "All right."
"Lust was killed huh?"
This was troubling news indeed.
At the very least it caused a delay in the plan.
The man in the red coat only partially glanced as a Seer Grimm, followed by a man in a mask and dark robe appeared out of the shadows and approached him.
"Sammael and Umbra." The man's red eyes glinted with surprise and amusement. "Well, isn't this a fine treat? The eldest of the Fallen paying me a visit. Should I look into every dark corner and see if Moloch is lurking there."
"No need for that. You will find that Moloch had other priorities." Sammael remarked from the crystal ball of the Seer. "There is a complication. Someone is aiming to manipulate the present in order to alter their own future."
"A quantum play? Hmph, risky but not surprising. I know none of us, even you have any wish to dabble in that little bag of mysteries." Los remarked. "Perhaps it has something to do with the death of the Homunculus Lust. She was killed just over a day ago by an old friend of ours: a Gunslinger from the line of the line of Arthur Eld."
"They still exist?" Umbra asked. "I thought we exterminated their clan when Gilead fell."
"Not surprising in the least to me. I know better than anyone how difficult the line of Eld can be to extinguish." Los remarked, walking out onto the balcony of the city he was stationed.
The city formerly known as Paris.
When it fell that night because of the Mad Priest the Slime Elemental of that time had left a curse on the city, covering the buildings and the rampaging Grimm in slime that had hardened over the years. The buildings were perfectly preserved no matter the damage and despite the slime's presence it had made a perfect base with Grimm existing on the outskirts of the city, having claimed it as their home.
"How goes their plan?"
"The leader of the Nazi regime has divided his forces between the allies in the west and the soviets in the east. A foolish mistake, trying to front one war on multiple fronts when it would have been smarter to reinforce their borders to hold off the enemy armies, forcing them to use up resources and man power rather quickly." Los scoffed as he looked out across the city. "That fool is too driven by hate and power to realize his folly."
"In other words with Germany spreading its forces thin to counter the surrounding enemies instead they will lose ground." Sammael remarked. "Just as the Homunculi and their creator, the Dwarf in the Flask has planned."
Los turned and nodded at the Seer. "The blood crests have been carved out and the Grimm under the Dwarf's control will have finished digging out the tunnels by the time the allies invade France. But there is a complication."
"The Nazis have suddenly begun creating and building new advanced weaponry they should not have even begun to consider at this time. They plan to use their new toys to stop the allies invading Normandy." Los explained. "They could easily keep their control of Europe."
"How does the Dwarf feel about this?"
"Not good. He needs the Germany's enemies to close in all fronts so he can activate the circle when the time is right." Los answered.
"And when that happens, you will become the most powerful being on the planet." Umbra glanced at the Seer Grimm. "Next to you of course."
"Of course." Sammael remarked dryly. "Still, a Fallen empowered by the ingredients of a Philosopher's Stone is why we agreed to allow this plan go forward. The Spartans no doubt believe something is off but they have no idea what is happening."
"Between the war in Europe, the fighting between Persia and Greece as well conflict in the east. The circle will have its blood." Los remarked with a small grin. "And when I am empowered I will dispose of the Dwarf in the Flask and then we can move our operations overseas to America."
"Tread lightly, Los. You have a Gunslinger in your midst." Sammael cautioned. "And he is not the only problem which is why I am having Umbra join you."
"I was wondering why he was here." Los admitted, glancing at Umbra. "I am little too old to be babysitting."
Umbra let out a small snarl but threatening gesture from the Seer stopped him. "We have a mission, o great Crimson King."
"Soft J. Kimblee was released from prison and has been sent to intercept King Spartok before he reaches the Dwarf's sanctuary. You and Umbra will rendezvous with the Ministry of Pain and stop him." Sammael explained.
"Stop him from killing the King of Spartan, one of the greatest military powers in the world?" Los raised an eyebrow.
"And your best chance of killing the Dwarf in the Flask." Sammael replied.
"I still believe I can handle him myself." Los turned away, looking back over the city.
"Whether you can or cannot is not the issue. It's paving the way open right to the Dwarf. With Lust and Greed destroyed, the Dwarf only has Envy, Gluttony, Sloth and Pride with him now. The Spartans will draw their attention, allowing you to deal with the Dwarf and take control of the circle." Sammael explained.
"And when it is activated, Los will take in the souls of thousands of soldiers fighting across continent." Umbra caught on. "Their souls empowering him will increase his powers beyond any obstacle in our way."
"Exactly." Sammael nodded. "You will have the power I promised you, Los but you must remain patient. See this through and no one, not even the one prophesized to slay you by your brother will be able to stop you."
Los turned around, nodding and bowing to the Seer. "I understand, Sammael. We will head out immediately."
Sammael seemed satisfied as his face vanished from the Seer's crystal ball/head. As soon as it was gone though, Los fired a surge of dark lightning that shattered the Seer's head, killing it instantly. Umbra merely raised an eyebrow while watching as the Seer died. Curiously, something fell to the ground near the Seer, having apparently dropped it when Los attacked it.
"I trust I won't have to do the same to you." Los said once the Seer was dead.
"I was waiting for a chance to do that myself." Umbra said honestly.
"Good." Los turned away from Umbra and walked over to his desk. "The last thing I need is Sammael learning what I have learned."
"And what is that?"
Los pulled out what appeared to be laptop even though such devices did not yet exist. "Observe."
Umbra watched as the laptop showed a complete history of World War II, along with the strategies that were used against Germany. "This is from the future."
"And it was addressed to me." Los stated. "By someone who I have worked with while directing German's forces. A Doctor Von Reichter. His past, or should I say his present self has already seen this and is already building the new war machines that the schematics on this device for the Purists as we speak."
"So you knew this whole time and you never told Sammael." Umbra realized. "Why?"
"As it turns out, Von Reichter learned how to create his time device by studying the time magic that can only be used…by us Fallen." Los stated.
Umbra's eyes widened behind his mask. "Us? Sammael forbid all of the Fallen from using the time spell. He even went as far as to curse us, those gain the hidden gene that carries the thirteen from Fallen from one generation to the next to make sure we would never use it or we would suffer a horrific death."
"I can only surmise Von Reichter learned it somehow from me. If so then this entire quantum debacle is my fault and you know how Sammael will react." Los explained.
"He'd kill you to probably prevent the entire scenario." Umbra said knowingly. "He would never allow someone with the ability to travel through time to exist unless they were controlled by him. Otherwise they would be eliminated."
"Yes, exactly." Los nodded. "I've met Von Reichter several times and he has a cunning and intelligent mind. In fact he has already unlocked the secret to cloning and transferred his mind to two different bodies."
"I thought humans were nowhere near discovering that." Umbra said, looking over the schematics again. "Still, if he learned the secret of time travel this could turn the tide of the war in Germany's favor. Given that they originally lost."
"Von Reichter is not interested in Germany winning. All though the new war machines will more than likely stop the Allies invading Normandy and take over Europe." Los stated. "He's a scientist with a dream…of replacing the current humanity with a race of super enhanced humans. Look at this."
Umbra looked over the designs for something called the Cyber series. "I see…An entire army of genetically enhanced humans…Far beyond of any Faunus or Mobian."
"Von Reichter plans to use the war to weaken all the powers until his army of 'Cyber' humans are ready. The samples have been provided to start early creation of the prototypes." Los explained.
"And where do we fit into all of this?" Umbra questioned.
"Von Reichter claims out of respect to me for showing him enough of how to create a time portal that I will be spared and can take part in taking over the world." Los answered. "The Fallen will be given a chance to side with him when he rises."
"Does he believe he can defeat us?" Umbra was skeptical. "Surely he does not believe his army of super humans, no matter how strong they are will be enough against the Grimm, us and Sammael. This wouldn't be the first time someone has tried something like this."
"No, it wouldn't." Los brought a hand to his chin. "Which begs the question: how could I have shown him how to create a time portal if Sammael's curse forbids me?"
That was a very good question.
Only something with great magical powers, matching or even surpassing Sammael's would be enough to lift the curse.
"I believe this device has a message. I was about to see it when I was contacted by Sammael and decided to hold off until I was sure he wouldn't be contacting us again." Los stated as he scrolled down to the bottom of the page.
On the very bottom was a video icon that he clicked on. A window popped open, showing a recording of Dr. Von Reichter himself.
"Greetings from the future, Los the Red. Son of the Fallen Crimson, the Crimson King." The recording started. "As you likely may know, I am Doctor Von Reichter, genius and future ruler of the world. You must be wondering how I can make such a bold claim. Well, I have you to thank for that, my friend."
Los and Umbra remained silent through the recording.
"This device was sent through the prototype of a working time portal. The reason I sent it back instead of coming back myself is because since I was already alive in that era I cannot return without creating a time paradox so I leave this in the hands of my past self to give to you once he has learned everything he needs. First off, if you wish to learn how to rid yourself of Sammael's curse you must seek out a man named Grigori Rasputin. He is a…Let's call him a man who has tapped into forms of magic darker than even Sammael has dared to tread." The recording continued. "He is the one who will ultimately remove the curse. Second, the elimination of King Spartok will lead to the destruction of nearly all of Europe, except of course for those who would be in the shelter or in the center of the circle."
Los narrowed his eyes at Von Reichter revealing his plans.
"With the technology I am sending back, knowledge of the war's outcomes and your power enhanced through thousands of souls that make an immortal rivaling even Sammael we will be able to dominate this world together. I have already sent instructions for one Steven Deschain to be assassinated at the right time. With him out of the way your survival is guaranteed and together we will take total control of this world. I make this offer because it was you who gave me what I needed to take this chance to take my place as the new world ruler and I always reward those who help." The recording was nearing the end with Von Reichter smiling. "Seek me out once you have broken the curse and together we will eliminate everything in our way, even Sammael."
The recording ended, leaving the two Fallen to contemplate what they have learned.
"Do you plan on following his instructions?" Umbra finally asked.
Los was silent as he walked over to the item that the Seer dropped, picking it up and revealing it to Umbra. It was an old style revolver pistol but when Los opened the barrel he saw it was not loaded with ordinary bullets.
"These bullets…" Los pulled out one, showing a strange bright glow. "This energy is related to the same quintessential forces that allowed for magic to exist in this world at the beginning."
"What?" Umbra looked carefully at the bullet, sensing a strange but very powerful form of energy from it. "What is it?"
"The very thing that can kill or at very least destroy this Grigori Rasputin, now that I know what he is." Los said as he loaded the pistol. "…Life."
"Does that mean he knows?" Umbra asked with a concerned face behind his mask. "How?"
"I am sure he has his sources."
Sammael sat cross legged in the center of his meditation chamber, his closed but a small smile appeared on his face. "Indeed I do."
His eyes opened and they glowed, not red but pure white.
And standing before him was himself, far in the future with a smirk as he held out his hand, creating and summoning the very same revolve his Seer had given to Los.
"Indeed I do."
