Chapter 16-Long Live the King
Aegon was tired. Not surprising given how he has spent a great deal of time and effort using the Force to heal his cousin Brandon's back so the boy could walk again. It had taken some considerable effort to use the Force, reach out to the broken section where the injury was located and command the power to fix what was broken. He had put Bran into a deep sleep since fixing the spine when awake would hurt the boy considerably due to the nerves and bone being mended and becoming alive again. Not only that, but the nerves in the legs would awaken from their own disuse. The end result would be the poor Stark boy being in even more pain following the process. Something he told his Uncle and Maester Luwin about for when Bran woke up and his legs began to hurt now that the nerves were returning to active service.
It had been a tiring painful few days for Bran. Crying out in pain or trying to hold back the pain in his legs now that they were connected to him once more in terms of feeling. Aegon stayed with him during that time, using the Force to numb the pain to a certain degree to the point where the boy didn't pass out. Ned had come into the room a couple of times, same with Maester Luwin to give the boy the Milk of the Poppy. But Aegon told the Maester it would not help Brandon and he was using his powers to help, even though the pain was required. Aegon explained the pain would send messages to Brandon's brain and let it know the legs were working again. It was a requirement in this case and the pain would last only a few days before Bran could think about trying to walk again. That would take a little longer due to the inactivity of Bran's legs, but Aegon assured everyone it would go away in time. He also recommended a climbing support harness be made for Brandon in order for the boy to keep on climbing and not worry about falling again anytime soon.
The act of healing Brandon took a similar amount of effort when Aegon cured Shireen Baratheon of her own condition with the Greyscale scar, which she had on her face and upper part of the body. Stannis had eventually brought his daughter to him in the hopes his powers could do what the Maesters and other apothecaries could not. While Aegon had assured the serious Baratheon in the past that the girl's condition could be cured by using the Force, Stannis was still nervous deep down. Even if he didn't show such emotions in front of others. It was quite understandable, given the man's only child had such a noticeable scar on her body after the Maesters and others skilled in medicine tried (poorly) to combat the disease which was the source of it all. With the proper research on the subject of the greyscale, plus reading the journal of Stannis's Maester when working at Dragonstone, the King had determined the act which was used to cure Shireen was done on purpose to making the pure hearted girl live a solitary life and never truly leave her home. The Maester's journal was quite detailed on how the plan was to cure the disease, but leave a horrendous scar so pronounced, so deep, it would make any suitor run away from marrying the girl in the future.
Stannis was already made aware of this when the King had begun purging the Maesters who had been part of a secret order to purge the Targaryen line, the dragons, and the magic they commanded. The said Maester, who had been left to rot in the Black Cells of King's Landing had been paid one final visit by Stannis and the King. Both men telling the old fool how all of his fellow conspirators were dead, the secret Order from within the group was dead. The plots and plans they created were exposed and the Lords of each House now keeping a closer eye on every Maester they had working in their castles.
Some of the Lords even wanted their heirs and spares to begin learning more to expand their education so they wouldn't have to rely on the Maesters like many Lords did in the past when running a House. It would also make sure that the next generation of Lords were able to manage their Houses properly and prevent them from falling into ruin as some of these robed rats had tried to do in order to put someone else in charge of the keeps, they wished to seat there.
And that was just the beginning if Aegon had his way. For too long, the King had seen how the smallfolk had remained uneducated and unable to grow beyond the norm of being servants to hire powers while few rose to higher positions through sheer luck, friendship, or the rare marriage into a prominent House which showed them favor. The King felt the smallfolk should have a decent education, which would help in them learn new skills, develop new talents, and bring progression to the Seven Kingdoms, which he felt was sorely lacking right now.
Naturally, the Maester used his last moments with the King and Stannis to denounce them. Calling them fools and the actions taken by the young King would undo the Seven Kingdoms. How the smallfolk were meant to be kept low and stupid while the Highborn Lords and Royalty were meant to be dependent on the Maesters of the Citadel. How Maesters from their Order were meant to be the true power behind the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms due to their superior intelligence. How the secret Order within the Maesters would rise again and take their revenge on those who would seek to destroy them.
No one will rise for you Maester. No one will rise for dead robed rats who thought themselves superior to others with the knowledge they hoarded and coveted. Those who swear chastity, yet still lay with whores in brothels. Or in some sick cases, with the children under the pretense of examining them in the name of something noble. Your Order was filled with hypocrisy and corruption. You tried to manipulate the Seven Kingdoms into your perverted world where you hold everything while everyone else has nothing. How can the Seven Kingdoms function if almost all the people in it are too stupid to do anything? It can't. Your paradise was a fools dream. And after you are gone? A dead one.
The Maester soon had his head taken off by Stannis himself and the body burned by the dragons in the Dragon Pit with the ashes blowing into the wind.
It wasn't long after that, Aegon was able to see his cousin Shireen and he began to use the Force to heal her of the remaining affliction that scarred the girl's face and down her neck. Once he had finished the process, the girl was shown her reflection in the mirror and saw the reminder of the disease was no more. She instantly hugged the King soon after, thanking Aegon for curing her, and went so far as to swear House Baratheon would forever be loyal to House Targaryen long after she was gone from the world. Stannis looked uncomfortable for a moment that his daughter would make such a declaration, but Aegon had told him it was fine and accepted Shireen's future oath of loyalty for the day when she became the future Lady of House Baratheon.
And now here Aegon was here in the North, breathing in the cool air once more. Watching the men and women of Winterfell carrying out their duties. His dragons nearby. Either flying, eating, or resting in a wide-open area for them to relax and get use to the cold since they would have to be here for a time.
As for Brandon, he was being watched by many of the people every so often while the boy went through his new routine of getting use to walking again. Everyone was happy for the little Lord. He had his ability to walk taken away from him by a dishonorable man, only to have it returned to him. And by a King with magic and Northern blood in his veins. In the eyes of the men and women of the North, who had lived there all their life it was a gift by the Old Gods. One they were happy to see in their lifetime given all that had happened ever since the late King Robert had visited to make their Liege Lord the Hand of the King.
The boy had taken to walking around his room at first. Getting use to walking and being near his bed should he collapse. Which he did on the first try. Something that was expected according to both Aegon and Maester Luwin. They knew this type of recovery would take time and told Bran not to worry or to be discouraged after the first fall. After a few more attempts and falls, the boy was eventually able to walk around the room before making it to his bed without issue. Each day was a test of how long he could walk without falling and for how long. It soon progressed from the room to the steps leading down the keep to the Main Hall of Winterfell. Each day that went by was another day for Bran getting stronger and it showed with each new step showing his efforts and desire to walk under his own power once again.
Never giving up. Never stopping. A true Stark and son of the North if there ever was one.
Beside Bran was Holder or as he was once known as Wylisbefore the issue to speak only one word was inflicted upon him during his younger years as a boy. A condition that Aegon had removed from the poor giant's mind, after digging into it to find the source of the cause, which the King saw was the damn three eyed raven. The man's manipulations caused him to touch people through time to a degree, and in this case, had used it to temporary fight the current to reach out to Wylis's once innocent mind. To give him that one mental command to "Hold the door" as it were, but the command was forced into the boy with such intensity, it changed from "Hold the door" to "Holder", with the poor boy saying only that one word.
Only those who knew of the incident knew the giant man's true name, but their children and children's children did not. They believed his name was Holder and since no one had told them different, they just assumed his name was Holder and was a halfwit with giant's blood in his veins.
While he did have giant's blood in his veins, Wyliswas far from a halfwit. The large man was intelligent and very loyal to House Stark. When several people, the Maester who preceded Luwin especially, asked Lord Rickard Stark to dismiss Walder from service, the still Lord of Winterfell refused the advice given. Wyliswas a dear friend to Lord Stark's children and to Old Nan, who wasn't so old at the time. The poor woman had been a loyal servant during her years of service.
To send her only son Wylisaway would be an insult and neither she nor his children would have never forgiven him for it.
After breaking the connection put into Wylisby the three eyed raven, the King focused his attention to the White Walkers. Or rather the Night King specifically. The dark entity was marching, his patience had worn thin since Aegon had done what was considered to be impossible in the eyes and minds of many. While the Wall would stand against the Night King and his army, it would be put to the test when the time came to repel the army of the undead. Aegon knew the Night King wasn't stupid. Far from it. This was an entity that had waited for well over 1,000 years to make war with the realms of men. Gathering an army so massive, it would take the entire might of the Seven Kingdoms and more to repel the enemy.
And that was with the Wall being manned from top to bottom, each castle fully garrisoned, and every defense along the line ready to be used. Had the Night King attacked the Wall at its weakest, the dead would have consumed all the living and more.
It was fortunate the Night King had been patient for too long and waited even longer to enact his plan to consume the world in the darkness that was death. Aegon believed the Night King had seen visions of the future and believed they would play out accordingly and had no need to rush things until the Wall was at its absolute weakest.
It was almost a shame no one told the Night King that the future was always in motion. One future has a person walking down a path that leads to the left and in another it leads to their right. Like a tree having multiple branches that grow and spread out, the future did the same way.
An example would be at the Battle at the Trident between Prince Rheagar and Robert Baratheon. The life they lived in now had Robert winning. Another possible outcome Aegon had seen showed Rheagar winning instead, pardoned the Lords of the North after revealing the truth, and healed the rifts caused by the Mad King. House Targaryen redeeming itself through the eyes of the Seven Kingdoms despite the attempts of others to do otherwise. It was upsetting in many ways for Aegon when he saw the multiple futures and paths people could have taken but did not for one reason or another.
The nature of time was a mystery in all aspects no matter how hard you tried to understand it. Even to someone trained in the Force and capable of wielding its power like Aegon himself. Or the Night King. Or Bloodraven.
"Something bothering you, your Grace?" asked Maester Luwin while watching the King stare at the snowy field in front of him.
It gave Aegon a sense of serenity seeing such calmness. Right before the coming storm he knew was headed their way to fuck it all up. It reminded him of what he and everyone else was fighting for and what they would lose if they failed to stop the rising darkness wishing to take everything from them.
"No Maester Luwin. Just thinking of what we have and what we will lose should the enemy win. While most would be bothered by the last part, I have long since conquered my fear of such a possibility to the point it doesn't sway me," replied Aegon with Luwin nodding.
"It is an interesting time to be alive. Sometimes I wonder if I am dreaming. Sometimes I wonder at the sight of dragons returning in my time. That magic would rise once more," said Maester Luwin with a small smile on his face.
"Can I ask you a question Maester Luwin?" asked Aegon with the Maester Luwin nodding.
"Ask me anything your Grace. I will answer honestly," replied Maester Luwin since he had never felt a need to lie to people seeking his advice.
"It is about my Uncle's wife. Was she always so spiteful of me when I was first brought here as a babe?" asked Aegon with Maester Luwin thinking back to when the young King was first brought here.
"Surprisingly, no. Not at first. You were an innocent babe being brought home by his Father and to be raised in his home. Many did not question it since your Uncle, who everyone assumed was your Father, was doing right by your, at the time, unknown Mother. Catelyn understood that fact. At least in the very beginning. But she had also just given birth to your cousin Robb several moons earlier. As she watched you and her son grow up together, it was clear your potential would rival if not surpass his own. Her fear of you one day usurping control of Winterfell and the North from Robb began to grow. The day it truly took root was on the day you were practicing with Ser Rodrick in the yard with wooden swords when both of you were around eight. You were able to beat Robb in a spar and she saw this as a sign of her son's future being in jeopardy," answered Maester Luwin since he had been there when the woman went to see Ned Stark about the boy.
The argument fortunately took place in the man's solar. As such, no one heard the arguing with the exception of the guards outside the room. They were sworn to silence on the issue since Ned didn't want anyone to know about the argument.
"Do you think if she knew the truth, things would have been different?" asked Aegon curiously.
"It is hard to say your Grace. On one hand, she might have realized why her husband did what he did to protect you. On the other hand, her House did rise against House Targaryen. Betraying their oaths and siding with Robert during the Rebellion. Your Uncle probably feared she would inform Robert, if not her own family about it to ensure their position was secured once the truth was revealed. With an heir to Winterfell, your Uncle would be forced to take the Black while his son became the new Warden of the North to be molded how his Mother wished," said Maester Luwin with Aegon shaking his head.
"Unfortunately, I believe my Uncle's wife would have done the latter of the two options when it came to my existence Maester Luwin. The woman is too Southern for the North. She is under the impression that all those sworn to her House or House Stark should obey no matter what. More importantly, she wanted them to obey her through Robb when he became Lord of Winterfell. To obey and follow her rules. Obey and follow her standards. Obey and follow her traditions. Obey and follow her faith no matter their own personal feelings on the matter," said Aegon, which was why he found her actions to by hypocritical in itself.
"The North is its own entity your Grace. It is too wild and cannot be controlled so easily. Even a Stark can only wield so much power over this Kingdom before one of its members does something the rest of the North does not approve of. Had Lady Catelyn had her way in running the North through young Robb, I do believe the loyalty of the Northern Lords would have been lost during its brief time at war with the Lannisters," said Maester Luwin with Aegon nodding.
"I agree. She made deals with people. Deals she was not qualified to make or allowed to make regarding Robb's future. And when she conspired with others to see me along with the rest of my House dead at a wedding, it was with people who were dishonest ambitious cunts," commented Aegon while once more seeing the hypocrisy behind the woman's actions.
"Not that I mind being asked for sound advice your Grace. But why bring this up now? Lord Stark's wife has been sent to Dorne for quite some time," injured Maester Luwin curiously.
"Just thinking about the past Maester. I want to be a good King. An honest and just King. I like to reflect on my past actions of the time and see if I would do anything differently in the present. Your advice is meant to help with clarity and for me to keep it," answered Aegon with Maester Luwin nodding.
"And do you have clarity your Grace?" asked Maester Luwin curiously.
"Yes. My decision to have her sent to the Dorne was the correct one. Sending that woman to be one of the Silent Sisters would have been too merciful. She would have thrived there among them. Doing her prayers and following the faith with such zealousness. She needed to be taken out of her comfort zone and away from things that made the woman feel right at home. Thank you for your insight on things Maester Luwin," said Aegon before taking in a deep breath and letting the cold air fill his lungs.
"I live to serve your Grace. To provide sound advice to a King is a great honor," said Maester Luwin with Aegon giving the man a nod and walk away to handle other things.
"Ser Barristan says you get your brooding from my brother," said Daenerys after she walked over to him and saw her nephew smirking for a second.
"I've heard him tell me the same thing. He was always brooding and concerned over everything around him when it came to the future of the realms. I wonder if he had a sense of things like I did? Sensed how things were getting worse around him but didn't understand how he knew it or how to stop it. I wonder if my Father foresaw his own death before or during the battle of the Trident and still tried to change the outcome?" questioned Aegon while Daenerys grimaced at the thought of seeing something so bad and tried to change what was possibly set-in stone.
"If he did, my brother faced it without fear. I often wondered what would have happened had he lived and crushed Robert Baratheon's Rebellion," remarked Daenerys with Aegon nodding.
"I have seen different possibilities regarding that pivotal moment. Had my Father won, he would have revealed the truth to my Uncle about marrying my Mother. How Jon Arryn lied or tried to keep the truth from him. It would have caused a massive falling out between the two. Lord Arryn would have begged mercy at that point when it came facing the dragon's judgement, but my Father wouldn't allow it. He would have taken the old Falcon's head. He would have killed Holster Tully and placed his brother as Regent until his nephew is ready to rule. But Edmure comes to hate the dragons even more despite House Tully being in the wrong and plots to rebel like House Baratheon did. Only for Varys to report his intentions and my Father removes him by sending Edmure to the Wall. Bryden finds himself a woman to give him heir and rules over Riverrun justly. Tywin Lannister would have tried to come back as Hand of the King to be a big influence once more, but Rheagar wouldn't allow it. My Father would dismiss Jamie from the Kingsguard after returning to the Capital and finding my Grandfather had been killed by him before the man could initiate his plot to unleash the wildfire on the city," said Aegon while seeing the image of a possible future play out through the Force.
"Does it end Tywin's ambitions? And what happens to Stannis and Renly Baratheon?" asked Daenerys curiously while wondering what this alternative future held.
"Tywin becomes angry at being denied his position as Hand of the King but is pleased that Jamie is his now heir to Casterly Rock once more. Of course, he plotted and planned to try and tie his House to the dragons, but again he was denied, only this time by my Father. When his children were of no use to him in that regard, Tywin tried to use his Grandchildren that Jamie and Cersei had through their arranged marriages with their spouses. Only Jamie never had any children with his wife. Never had a chance. His sister had the handmaidens slip the woman Moon Tea in the first few years of the marriage and then had her killed. As for Cersei, her Father found out that her children were really Jamie's children and he went mad. He killed Jamie, Cersei, and their children in a rage before taking his own life by throwing himself out of the castle tower. Tyrion becomes Lord of Casterly Rock and surprises many of his family by ruling the West incredibly well despite some thinking he would fail. His cunning mind, yet compassion for others makes him loved by many and is considered the most respected Lannister of his time," said Aegon with Daenerys smirking since she knew such an event would hurt the old lion if he was alive to hear it.
"Tyrion is a good man. He deserves his position on the Small Council. Not that his Father would admit it, if the man were still alive," commented Daenerys.
"Indeed. Tywin underestimated Tyrion's potential. Had he spent as much time with him as he did Jamie without the hatred for the loss of it his wife, the old lion would have been proud to call Tyrion his son. Sadly, for Tywin, such a thing will not happen," said Aegon with a vision in the Force showing such an event had Tywin let go of his unnecessary hatred for his second son.
A vision Tyrion had been told about. It actually gave the young Lannister a small sense of satisfaction in knowing he had made his Father proud if events had been different. Tyrion had always wanted to prove to his Father that he was worthy of the Lannister name, but Tywin never really gave him the chance. It was refreshing, yet still saddening to know what could have been, but Tyrion was content to know what could have been if his Father had tried on his end to make things work.
For it was Tywin's fault that things between them was so bad. It was Tywin's fault they were never close over the years. And it was Tywin's fault things went so bad in the first place. It was not Tyrion Lannister's fault. It was Tywin Lannister's fault.
"It is a painful truth about what has been said about one's pride when they have so much of it. Twice the pride. Double the fall," remarked Daenerys with Aegon nodding knowing his secret Master Count Dooku had said the same thing when teaching him.
"Indeed. Which is why I don't intend for my pride to control me. A dragon's pride is a massive thing. It led to our House to fall through our enemies provoking and attacking our pride until we fell to the point of near extinction," said Aegon with Daenerys nodding.
"Dragons are not slaves. The same can be said in relation to our pride. I will not let myself be a slave to my own pride. Just because I am a dragon does not mean I am invincible. Father thought differently and it cost him dearly," said Daenerys knowing her Father's madness and pride had caused his fall with the help of those conspiring against House Targaryen.
"I am pleased to hear it Aunt. For our enemy on the other side is the same way. They have no pride. No sense of morality. No ethics. No honor. Possibly even no soul. We must be better and rise above them in more way than one. The Night King expects us to be divided, weak, and ripping out each other's throats while he matches on the Wall with everything needed to win," said Aegon with Daenerys nodding since the enemy would seek to rip them to pieces while at their weakest.
Fortunately, the realms of men were no longer weak or divided. They were strong. Stronger than they had been in a long time since before the Mad King ruled. No longer were the realms of men filled with ambitious, greedy, power hungry fools seeking to be the true power of the Seven Kingdoms. No longer was the dragon too weak or too blind. No longer would shadowy groups seek to challenge the rightful rulers of the Seven Kingdoms.
When the darkness came, House Targaryen would bring the dawn and the world would shine brightly to the point of banishing such evil away.
(The Wall-Sometime Later)
Men of the Night's Watch, the free folk, the Unsullied, and the soldiers throughout the Seven Kingdoms filled the Wall from left to right. From the top of the massive structure to the base where the doors opened to allow passage to the other side. All were here to fight. All here to protect the realms of men. Above the Wall, flying high, were the three dragons, and each one ready for a fight.
Riding on the massive form of the biggest dragon among the three, Vaderon, was Aegon himself while he stared down at the coming army of the undead. Wearing his now infamous "dragon mask" as it had been come to be called when on his head, his sword in hand, and the Force as his ally. The final battle between life and death had come with one side being the victor over the other.
"Time to bring the dawn nephew," said Daenerys as she was on Drogon and eager for a fight.
"Indeed. Are the Wildfire caches in position?" asked Aegon despite knowing they already were.
"Yes. All of them carefully hidden and well placed. One spark of fire is all we need to unleash it on our enemy," said Daenerys with Aegon smirking behind his mask.
"Good. Wait until the majority of this army is close enough and, on my signal, unleash dragon's fire on the assigned spot," ordered Aegon with Daenerys nodding before she ordered Drogon to fly toward her intended destination.
The plan was simple enough, yet still dangerous all the same. The vast snowy field leading between the Wall and the trees beyond it were soaked with Wildfire or had various caches of it buried in slightly in certain spots When enough of the Night King's army was over the areas where they were located, the dragons would ignite the liquid with their fire, causing a chain reaction that would consume the vast majority of the army intending to take the Wall. Even without the free folk numbering over 100,000 people, the army the Night King had amassed was no less impressive.
It was now clear to everyone seeing it that the undead evil they were facing today had gathered well over a million undead people to his cause. All undead. They saw giants, ice spiders as big as war horses, men from the Night's Watch, and free folk all slowly marching their undead bodies forward under the command of the Night King.
It was here, seeing the army in all its glory, Aegon knew that even with the Wildfire trap being ready for use, the damage done to the Night King's army would only slow them down. It would take everything they had to win and the desire to win against the undead army. Swords, spears, arrows with dragon glass tips, fire of all kinds, and everything else they could bring down on the undead army heading their way.
"Valar Morghulis," said Aegon to himself, but also sent the words to his Aunt through his mind.
"Valar Dohaeris," said Daenerys back through the mental link before she had Drogon unleash his flames on the spot Aegon wanted her to strike.
And sure enough, the devastating unleashed in the chain reaction was everything Aegon had foreseen through the Force. The green fire erupted in an explosion of death and violence that would have made the Mad King, if alive, laugh himself further into madness until he died from laughing too hard. The fire consumed a massive portion of the undead, the various caches buried underneath the snow had shot out in massive explosions, killing many of the giant ice spiders, undead giants, and other creatures the Night King had turned to his side.
But even with all the damage done, the undead army didn't stop marching toward the Wall. They just kept walking over the ashes and burning bodies of those who marched in front of them. It was almost disturbing that so many would keep marching over the burning corpses of their brethren, if not for the fact those marching forward were already dead. With the Wildfire dying down, Aegon had Vaderon and Revanchist move in with their flames while Daenerys did the same on Drogon. They had dragon fire rain down on the army of the undead from the safety of the skies, hitting the more dangerous creatures had survived the Wildfire.
Aegon sensed something nearby and turned his head to see the Night King looking at him from behind the large army marching toward the Wall. A massive ice spear in hand, ready to be launched at him to either hit the King or the dragon.
When the projectile was launched however, Aegon was ready for it. Maneuvering Vaderon around the projectile the Night King threw at him. In retaliation, the King of the Seven Kingdoms had his dragon unleash a wave of dragon fire at the line of troops in front of his enemy. By that point, the Night King had formed another ice spear and was getting ready to throw it. Using the Force, Aegon had timed it exactly right for Vaderon to move just before the weapon could be thrown to hit either of them.
The same could not be said for several of the Night King's fellow commanders sitting on their undead horses by the evil creature's side. When Aegon move Vaderon out of the ice spear's direction, he also had Vaderon keep the fire going and burned two of the Night King's commanders. As a result, a large portion of the Night King's army fell immediately from the act. Glancing back at the Night King, it was clear the enemy was not pleased with seeing a weakness being made known to Aegon. If anything, it made the Night King show anger on his usually unreadable face and made another attempt to hitting one of the dragons flying in the air with an ice spear.
One ice spear nearly hit Revanchist, but Aegon had Vaderon fly near it just enough to swing his sword and shatter the weapon in a single strike. Even from on high, the King could see his enemy below was now starting to lose his patience with trying to best them. Deciding to forgo simple intimidation and break the enemy's spirit, the Night King commanded his entire army to rush the Wall in order to climb it knowing the losses suffered on its end were not important. Once the Wall was taken, the bodies of the living lay dead, the evil entity would simply use its powers to make them rise to follow him and replenish his losses once more.
"Ready! Fire arrows and release barrels!" ordered the Lord Commander Mormont with the archers launching their projectiles down on the enemy.
The ice spiders who survived the Wildfire and dragon fire were soon blown to pieces. The fire arrows hit the undead, catching them ablaze, ending their connection to the Night King almost immediately. Some of the barrels hit the base of the Wall, hitting the giants and mammoths there. Some of the giants were hit by fire arrows, but they were too big for the fire on them to have any immediate effect. Adding the coldness of their surroundings, the fire on the massive men wouldn't last long. The undead mammoths charged the gates below, even if they were sealed and iced over to ensure no one could enter through them for a long time, if ever again.
But for every undead being that fell, an infinite more seemed to replace them. They ran to the Wall with a purpose driving them that was not their own. They were driven by the desire of their master to climb and kill all who stood in the Night King's way. It didn't matter how many were destroyed or taken down in the process. They were to obey the Will of the Night King and carry out his orders to the letter.
And right now, their orders were to climb the Wall and seek the death of everyone alive on it over it.
Due to the massive numbers of the undead, those among their ranks who managed to get to close to the top were struck down by spears with fire covered tips. Those that managed to get to the actual top were struck down by swords or knocked off the Wall by shields wielded by strong men who knew how to use them to such effect. Some of the ice spiders managed to get to the top of the Wall, but they were soon ripped off the Wall by Revanchist and thrown to their doom onto the undead below.
"Gods damned fuckers! Is there no end to them?" asked Lord Umber while swinging his sword down on the one undead in front of him and splitting it in two down the middle.
"The Night King has been planning to take the Wall for a long time Lord Umber. I would be surprised if we destroyed them all at this point," said Ned Stark right beside him while swinging his sword and taking the head off one of the undead before kicking it off the Wall from where it came.
"Joking during the middle of a fight for the realms very existence! Ha! And here I was almost afraid your time down South would soften you. You are a true northerner to the end Lord Stark!" exclaimed Lord Umber with a laugh before punching an undead soldier off the Wall.
"The North remembers!" said Ned Stark with everyone around him shouting it with the Umbers being the loudest of them all.
Nearby, Gendry was wielding his Father's war hammer, a gift from the King himself and even legitimizing the boy as Robert Baratheon's son. Many had wondered why the King would do something like this after what happened during Robert's Rebellion, until Aegon explained that Gendry was not his Father and his own man. He may have Robert's blood in his veins, but his destiny was his own to choose on how to live his life.
Gendry had made it clear he wasn't one who wanted anything fancy in his life, having lived a humble life as a bastard, but Lord Stark still felt some measure of loyalty to his late brother in all but blood. As such, he arranged, with the King's blessing, for Gendry to live in the North and where the Dreadfort had once stood, only rebuilt, and would eventually be renamed Fury's Dwelling in honor of the Baratheon House words "Ours is the Fury!" all the Baratheon men were known to possess.
During his time under Aegon's rule, Gendry had become quite the smith, and helped in the creation of many of the weapons being used against the undead. Most of the swords, shields, maces, spears, and other weapons most of the men and women here now wielded were put together by Gendry in the time he had been given his own place to work.
"Do you think he would be proud of me, Lord Stark? My Father?"
"Without question Gendry. You are strong. Determined. You look like he did during our younger years growing up. Your skill with the war hammer is damn near identical to Robert's own. Why do you think it would be otherwise?"
"Because of the man now sitting on the Iron Throne. Because of the man who is currently King. I call him a friend, yet he is a Targaryen. His Father and mine were not exactly friends."
"Aye, that last part is true. But just because Robert and Rheagar were enemies doesn't mean you and Aegon have to continue the fighting. You don't have to hate each other. If anything, you should strive to be better than Robert by not hating Aegon for being King or sitting on the Iron Throne."
"It was said my Father rebelled against the Iron Throne because Rheagar kidnapped your sister. Some still say it is the truth while others say it was a lie."
"It was a lie. But at the time, until I arrived at the Tower of Joy in Dorne, I believed it was true. Many of us who fought against House Targaryen believed the lie was true. And sadly, most of those who did know the truth were already against the dragon and chose to keep it from being known. The Mad King's own reputation with what he did to his sister and Queen once he saw someone burning didn't help dispel the rumors regarding his son. But in truth, Robert never loved my sister. He loved the idea of her. The idea of this wild, untamed woman of the North, being his wife. His great conquest to show off to the other Lords and Ladies. I was blind and didn't see his true feelings regarding my sister or Lyanna's own when it came how she felt about Robert."
"So, she didn't love my Father."
"No. But love had nothing to do with their arranged marriage. Lyanna had hated the idea. Even more so when she met Robert only once. She saw the kind of person he was the moment they first met. And like a fool, I was blind to the truth and didn't listen to her."
"They say my Father was drunkard and loved whores."
"That much is true. Any woman who caught his fancy, he tried to bed. I tried to help him show restraint before and during the war. Even when I was Hand of the King at the end of his rule. But the man was not one to show restraint in our youth. Even less when he became King. The man didn't understand what it meant to be King and wield so many responsibilities that came with the position of power one possesses when sitting on the Iron Throne."
"I wish I could have known him. But I don't want to be like my Father with his drinking and whoring ways that earned him such contempt from others. I wish to be a Baratheon like him, but not to the extent I will be identical to him. Does that make sense Lord Stark?"
"Aye, it does. I understand what you mean Gendry. You wish to be known as Robert's son, but also to not be known for the same vices he himself is known for and the same ones he enjoyed. I can help you with that since I knew Robert when growing up. I can help guide you to be the man Robert failed to be in life and become more in life to make your own legacy."
"I would welcome your assistance in this Lord Stark."
"Call me Ned. And if there is anything about Robert I don't know, we can talk to your Uncle Stannis to fill in the gaps. If there was anyone who knows more about your Father, good or bad, it is him."
In many ways, Ned had been a Father to Gendry. Trying to guide him, educate him, and make sure he was Robert's son, but not identical to the man himself. Stannis had also helped in that regard. At first, the second oldest Baratheon among three brothers thought Gendry would one day be the future Lord of Storm's End. But Gendry didn't want it. He was honored of course but felt Stannis's daughter should have the honor of being ruler over the Baratheon ancestral home. The boy wasn't about to usurp his cousin's position when she had a right to be its ruler. Something Stannis appreciated since he didn't want his daughter to be set aside like she was second to another member of the family. With the issue of succession to the Baratheon home handled, Gendry asked as many questions about his family as Stannis could answer. Eager to know more about his birthright, his heritage, and just about anything else connected to the Baratheon name.
"That Gendry boy sure can swing that fucking war hammer. He's the Demon of the Trident reborn!" stated Maege Mormont while using her Mace to smash and shatter an undead skull to powder.
"You can talk to him more about that later after we survive this Lady Mormont. Right now, we need to hold back this undead army," said Jon Connington, who was still finding it difficult to imagine fighting in the North, at the Wall, and beside people he once fought against during Robert's Rebellion.
"Still think the Dragon King is not worth fighting for?" asked Sandor Clegane while fighting side by side with Brienne of Tarth with both in full armor and swinging their swords to fend off the coming horde of undead.
"I'll let you know if we survive this," countered Brienne while her swing took the head off three undead men who once belonged to the Night's Watch long ago.
"When we survive. I don't intend to die here and becoming one of these fucking undead cunts!" replied Sandor after kicking one undead right in the chest and causing the torso part of the body to turn to dust before stomping on its head.
In the distance high above, Daenerys was still flying on Drogon and bringing fire down upon the undead in her area. As she was doing this, a presence made itself known to her and Drogon's mind. It was trying to tell her to attack the Night King. To seize glory for herself. To show everyone her nephew was not the only one worthy of praise and being second in the eyes of others and her House. But Daenerys would not be swayed. Her time with Aegon in strengthening her mental defenses and providing a sharpened mind allowed any such prodding from this outside presence to be a minor annoyance not even worthy of acknowledgement.
"Attack! Attack the Night King! Kill him with your dragon!"
"Your nephew is taking all the praise and glory for himself. You are of House Targaryen, are you not? Why should he be allowed to have it all? Because he is the King? You could challenge him for the right to be Queen!"
"Show them all your commanding presence. They will follow you if the Night King falls by your hands. You can make the world a better place. Kill the Night King and be given the right to remove your nephew from the Iron Throne!"
Daenerys scowled slightly at the words the voice that was almost screaming into her mind at this point, knowing fully well they were not from her mind or that of Drogon. She had no intention of obeying it and neither was Drogon. Neither cared for the voice or the presence behind it. They easily blocked the individual out like Aegon had trained them to do and reinforcing it with the bond between them. The presence trying to influence them was now becoming increasingly angry, as if it should be obeyed like one of the Gods.
But Daenerys knew differently. She knew who this was and what it was trying to do.
The three eyed raven would not control her like he tried to do the rest of the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon had been able to provide a detail history of what the wretched man had done with his powers and even more when imprisoned to the tree beyond the Wall by the Gods. How he had helped in the orchestration of the realms being weakened, the whispering and dream influencing of men and women from all over. Event he Maesters who tried to kill magic and influence the realms had been pawns to the three eyed raven. Telling them what to do without being none the wiser. All so the raven could be the one of the few, if not only beings in all the realms capable of wielding magic. How certain events were to connect with the here and now so one of those people strong enough to wield magic, but still so young to be molded to his liking would come find him. How the three eyed raven was plotting and planning to jump to a new body when the time was right.
And how Aegon's actions had disrupted his plans when altering the future away from what the mad man had foreseen with his powers.
(Flashback-Several Moons Ago)
"The three eyed raven? He is behind it? All of it?" asked Daenerys with Aegon nodding.
"He is a spiteful man Aunt. Always has been. When imprisoned beyond the Wall by the Gods, he vowed revenge against the realms of men. Even when Bloodraven knew the punishment fit the crime and he was guilty of committing it. He's been influencing everyone and everything to his cause. Man, woman, child, and even animals. Lady Olenna's husband falling off a cliff when riding his horse? It was the three eyed raven. The war of the Five Penny Kings? It was him. Even your Father's, my Grandfather's madness was helped along when he was captured all those years ago. The Maesters had a hand in making him into the Mad King with their herbs and concoctions to be sure, but the architect behind how they did everything was all Bloodraven. He entered your Father's mind when it was weakened, opening it using a figurative door to gain access, keeping the door open just enough for him to enter when he required, and whispered things into his ear from time to time. It was the main reason why your Father was always appearing to be talking to himself and thought mad," said Aegon while Daenerys scowled angrily at how someone could do that to her own family.
"Would my Father still become mad without Bloodraven?" asked Daenerys with Aegon shrugging.
"It's hard to say. Would the Maesters been able to do what they did without Bloodraven's influence? Possibly. But they wouldn't have been able to do it or find out how to do it just as quickly without his influence. What I do know is the man wanted to control the board on all sides and hates anyone who can take or move the pieces away from where he wants them to be placed. Anything he deems a threat to his plans are either manipulated or killed," said Aegon since Bloodraven was a very spiteful man full of hate, ambition, and a fear of dying.
Which is exactly why the man was trying to leave his old frail body for a new younger one with a strong connection to magic he could build on. The Heart Tree that pinned him was meant to keep the old man there until death came in the form of time draining his life away slowly while in perpetual agony. All the while keeping Bloodraven's powers from being used to their fullest. But the Old Gods did not anticipate the man would seek to use what little of his powers he still possessed to influence events throughout the realms to one day plot his escape. There were so many lives throughout the realms that influencing them all was not possible. Even for Bloodraven. But the Old Gods did not anticipate the man's desire to fight back against his prison.
"What if Bloodraven tries to influence us? Or the dragons?" asked Daenerys with concern.
"I can help with that Aunt. I can easily train your mind to block his influence. I can also do the same for the dragons should they be targeted. Our bond with them will only strengthen our mental defenses if and when he tries," said Aegon with Daenerys smiling since she knew her nephew would do everything in his power to protect them from harm.
(End Flashback)
Daenerys had Drogon aim at his fire through the line of soldiers to the remaining commanders the Night King had personally turned to help lead his undead army. With them gone, more of the undead army had fallen with the lack of magic that made them undead being disconnected. It even helped give those on the Wall a small reprieve when it happened, but the reprieve itself would not last long due to the vast majority of the army still belonging to the Night King himself.
"Don't get too close to him Aunt. The Night King's spear can pierce even the scales of a dragon," said Aegon while flying beside her.
"If that is true, then how do we kill the fucker without endangering our dragons in the process?" asked Daenerys with Aegon looking from his position to stare at the Night King staring back.
And it was clear the dark entity watching Aegon was not happy at seeing over a millennial of time spent gathering this army being destroyed in a fraction of the time. Like Bloodraven, the Night King had seen the future, a possible future to be more precise, and thought to act in the belief that victory was already set and written in stone.
But now? The Night King realized the future it felt was promised had not happened. Had been denied. Whether by the Gods or some other power close to them. It mattered not. What did matter was the Night King's army was slowly losing and the Night himself was feeling that cold raw feeling of anger over it.
"I need to get close. I need to fight him myself," said Aegon with Daenerys shaking her head.
"You will never get close enough. He is too well guarded," said Daenerys and could almost see the smirk on Aegon's face through that terrible mask.
"Not if our arena is surrounded by dragon's fire," commented Aegon before flew toward the Night King with Revanchist moving to provide additional assistance.
"Damn stubborn nephew," muttered Daenerys before she moved to provide her own assistance with Drogon.
The fire unleashed by the dragons did what was intended. A massive wall of fire formed a ring, three rings in fact, around the Night King, blocking his undead army from defending him from harm. At first, the Night King was confused, but that soon changed when Aegon leaped from Vaderon's massive back and landed with a loud thud. The Night King snarled hatefully at his opponent, his enemy, and ultimately this insect that dared to challenge him for the right to decide the fate of the realms.
"Come at me Night King. Come and get your trophy," mocked Aegon with the Night King while readying his sword being covered in dragon's fire when placing it close to the flame.
As for the Night King, he readied his weapon and let out a loud scream of rage that shook the ground around him before charging Aegon. The two Kings clashed, their swords singing loudly for all to hear with neither side giving ground. Neither side showing mercy or reprieve from their opponent's attacks with the intent to kill showing in every precise move made.
It was in this moment, unknown to all but a select few, the prophecy of the Prince that was promised, the true Song of Fire and Ice, was happening here in this battle of Kings. One of life. One of death. One of light. One of darkness. One with a soul of fire. One with a soulless body of ice. Those who had heard the prophecy believe the Prince who was promised, who would bring the dawn, would be born of fire and ice. But they were only half right as the intended "song" was only half completed when the birth of the chosen Prince was born. For in every song that has a beginning, which was the Prince's birth, must have an end to it too. An end to the "song", which involved the final battle between the Prince who had become King of the Seven Kingdoms, and the Night King seeking to destroy it. A song that involved fire and ice to create life and a clash between fire and ice to bring about the end of one with the fate of the realms being the prize for the victor.
Aegon watched his opponent carefully as they fought. Feeling the Night King's presence in the Force was like staring into the very essence of the dark side. It was like a small portion of the dark side had broken off and became its own entity. Something that had broken away and twisted itself into a perversion of the cosmic energy Dooku had taught and explained to him all those years ago. This being hated life in its entirety, wanted to consume all life around it like a ravenous beast. Constantly hunting for it, feeding off of it, and wanting more with each passing moment.
And like all beasts, it saw any challenger as a threat to its dominance. One that needed to be removed in order to have no equal or challenger to its desires.
Jumping high into the air, Aegon was able to get away from the Night King's blade, which was trying to slice him in half. Landing behind his adversary, Aegon attempted to slice into the Night King's back. But the enemy called on his power at the last minute to create a spiky wall of ice that shattered on impact with the King's sword. Dodging his head to the right, Aegon managed to avoid the pointy end of the ice sword coming at him through the ice shards, and from piercing his masked face. While his mask was made of strong metal material, he was about to trust his mask to properly protect him from the Night's King's ice sword. A quick use of the Force push sent the Night King and the ice shards into the enemy's body while sending said enemy closer to the dragon fire behind him. Snarling angrily, the Night King sent more ice shards at Aegon, but were stopped midway and sent back at him by Aegon. The act surprising and infuriating the Night King, as the heat from the dragon's fire licked at his back, a warning of his now precarious position.
Even more so when Aegon pressed his advantage. The two clashing violently before they deadlocked once more with the King of the Seven Kingdoms trying to push his enemy closer to the dragon's fire burning behind him.
In an act of desperation, the Night King grabbed one of Aegon's arms, trying to corrupt his enemy with his power. But to his surprise, the armor on Aegon's arm held strong against him. That was not possible! Seeing the shock in the Night King's eyes as an opening, Aegon broke the deadlock, slicing the enemy's sword arm at shoulder. The arm shattering on the ground like it was made of ice, the Night King looking at where limb fell in shock before feeling his other arm become severed as well. When Aegon's sword pierced the Night King's chest, the Targaryen pushed his enemy into the dragon's fire to ensure there was no chance of a return from this dark creature.
The Night King's cries of pain and agony echoed throughout the snowy region beyond the Wall, his army falling apart in an instant like a wave. His connection to them broken. Turning to dust in the wind and the corpses remaining falling down into piles in the snow.
All around him, Aegon could hear the sound of people cheering, which had echoed from the Wall and no doubt through the entire North, if not entirety of the Seven Kingdoms themselves. With a mere wave of his hand, the dragon fire around him died down and walked back to the Wall toward the cheering. No sooner had he done that, Vaderon came down for him to get on and fly back in style. Aegon smirked at his dragon for a son, knowing this one had a certain desire for drama. Revanchist was the same way. Not so much with Drogon, but that was probably because he preferred the direct approach in all things that caught his interest.
"You did it nephew. You won," said Ned with a smile on his face after Vaderon landed at the top of the Wall and Aegon dismounted the large dragon both men hugged the other.
"No Uncle. We won. We as a whole. We, as in the swords and shields who guard the realms of men from such darkness," said Aegon before removing his masked helmet.
"What happens now your Grace?" asked Ser Barristan while happy to see his King alive and unharmed by the dark evil that tried to kill him.
"Now Ser Barristan…we heal, we recover, and continue to grow stronger from this experiences of today to ensure any future threats do not overpower us," said Aegon while knowing the evil fought here and was defeated, it didn't mean they could just relax.
"Do you believe another Night King could rise again your Grace?" asked Randall Tarly curiously while he saw Aegon look at the vastness of the North beyond the Wall in thought.
"Hard to say. The future is always in motion. No one can say for sure what the future will hold. Not even me or anyone else with my power. The more clearer visions are events that will happen, but everything else? It is an unknown. Still, there may be a threat out there beside the Night King. Another one sleeping and waiting to rise one day to take over. Maybe some of the free folk will go beyond the Wall if they feel the time living at the Gift was a way to make them kneel and submit to us. The Wall will need to be kept running and manned by people Lord Tarly, but the Oath taken should be changed to ensure that those who come here either get a second chance or feel their time here is worth staying. I'll look into that later when time permits. For now, we need to celebrate our victory," replied Aegon with a smile on his face once more and everyone around him cheering.
And a well deserve celebration.
(Beyond the Wall-Sometime Later)
Aegon could sense Bloodraven's fear echoing through the Force. The closer he became to the old fiend, the more the fear grew. Like a fire in a thick fog being fed and growing stronger to light the way until it was a clear beacon to find his target. Bloodraven had tried to assault Ageon's mind, his dragon's mind, and just about anyone he could to make them turn on the King himself. But he would not be stopped in flying here to this place where this once great man turned horrible fiend was located.
It didn't take long for the King to arrive at the Heart Tree this far into the North, having been flown here on Revanchist this time while Vaderon was given a well-deserved rest. After landing in front of the cave that would lead him to the final threat as King, he saw the Children of the Forest walk out to meet him. At first, Aegon thought they were going to defend Bloodraven, given how they were here with him, and now standing in his way.
"Are you here to stop me?" asked Aegon with the one of them stepping forward to represent them all.
"No. We are on your side this day King of the Seven Kingdoms," answered the leader who looked like a little girl.
"What is your name?" asked Aegon curiously.
"You may call me Leaf. I represent my people," said Leaf with Aegon nodding.
"Why are you with Bloodraven?" asked Aegon curiously.
"At first, it was to defeat our shared enemy. Later on, it was self-preservation when our attempts failed to bring results," answered Leaf with Aegon nodding.
"He has much to answer for, as I'm sure you know," said Aegon with Leaf nodding.
"We know. Even now, he refuses to admit his actions were wrong," commented Leaf with Aegon looking from her to the cave entrance where his fear filled enemy was waiting for him.
"Stay here. I will deal with Bloodraven myself," said Aegon with Leaf and the other Children of the Forest nodding.
The King of the Seven Kingdoms walked without impediment toward his destination, the feeling of fear coming down the ways from him was only getting stronger. Fear, anger, frustration, despair, and many other negative emotions came pouring out from the man pinned to the roots of a Heart Tree. When he arrived in the room, Aegon saw the legend himself, Bloodraven, pinned down by the roots of the tree piercing his body, and struggling with what little physical strength he had left.
"Bloodraven. We meet at last," said Aegon while casually walking toward the fear faced man.
"Aegon Targaryen. Once Jon Snow. Now King of the Seven Kingdoms. Former bastard of Winterfell and stain on the honor of House Stark," commented Bloodraven with Aegon tilting his head slightly.
"You make it sound like I should be the former of the two," remarked Aegon with Bloodraven staring back.
"You were never meant to make it this far in life. You were meant to live a submissive and timid life at your Uncle's castle until it was your time to join the Night's Watch. You were never meant to be a King. Never meant to summon your three dragons. Never meant to cast down House Lannister or the Freys or even the Boltons. You were never meant to stop the wedding that would see your cousin and loyal Stark bannermen die. You were to live a life on the Wall. You have defied your purpose in life. You have defied your destiny," said Bloodraven with spite and jealousy in his voice.
"Defied it? Or perhaps, I achieved it? The future is always in motion Bloodraven. You of all people here should know that. You, who traveled the rivers of time. You, who used his powers to influence others to achieve his own selfish goals. You, who helped bring about the fall of my House, the influence with the Maesters, and even with the more zealous members of the Seven Faith. Whispering into their minds and providing them with the means to cast down your threats while moving the pieces on the board to bring about your return. To leap from one body to the next like a parasite. Seeking a young and strong magic filled body to one day take over and be free of your well-deserved prison," said Aegon with Bloodraven looking at him with anger and hatred.
"The Gods punished me unjustly! They had no right to do this to me. What I did, I did for the greater good of the realms," countered Bloodraven with Aegon scoffed at him.
"You manipulated events so magic in the blood of people in Westeros was rare and slim while looking for a diamond in the rough to bring here. You did it because you didn't want your chance to escape to be in jeopardy. Too many people with magic in their blood would have made things difficult for you in the long wrong so you set things in motion to thin the ranks and weaken it. All so you could find and claim the strongest of us when the time came to leave here. All your years of knowledge and wisdom in a body of a young strong boy would make you extremely dangerous. Which is why you planned to aim for my cousin Brandon, correct?" replied Aegon with Bloodraven gritting his teeth in anger with his eyes showing bitterness.
"It is not fair. I have been punished enough by the Old Gods! I deserve to be free from this wretched prison. I deserve to live and rule over the Seven Kingdoms. It is my right! I have the power to change the world for the better. Someone with my power should rule. To keep the chaos from spreading! To keep the peace within the realms of men!" exclaimed Bloodraven while Aegon shook his head.
"No. It is not your right Bloodraven. It never was your right. You help bring the chaos. You do not keep it in check. You do not bring peace. You bring its death," said Aegon with Bloodraven's eyes showing him the true level of madness behind those eyes.
"Then let it die! If I cannot live in this world as its ruler, whether officially or in the shadows, I will see the realms burn until there is nothing left!" countered Bloodraven with Aegon drawing his sword.
"Now I know without question where my Grandfather got the idea of burning everyone and everything in sight with his madness," commented Aegon before he threw his sword right at Bloodraven's skull and ended the man's life.
Pulling his sword back to his hand using the Force, Aegon sheathed it before walking out of the cave to meet the Children of the Forest to decide on what to do with them. When he got out of the cave, they were surrounding the dragon in wonder, and a quick check through the Force to his dragon for a son had confirmed they didn't do anything ill toward Revanchist. Not that he would let them. Aegon would have sensed any ill actions toward his dragon if they tried and made sure they paid for such a crime in blood.
"He is dead?" asked Leaf with Aegon nodding.
"Dead as one can be dead. Bloodraven also didn't jump bodies as he was no doubt trying to do when I was about to kill him. The Gods made sure of that such power was denied and any attempt on his part, I would have stopped with my own abilities. One thousand eyes and one have been closed forever," said Aegon with Leaf nodding since such power was too dangerous to be left alone to one man.
"What will you do now?" asked Leaf curiously.
"Return to my wife. Rule the Seven Kingdoms justly. You?" answered Aegon with Leaf thinking about it.
"We wish to go South of the Wall. Where it is warm and be around nature again. There is so little of it here," said Leaf with the other Children of the Forest nodding.
"I can take you South of the Wall. The Isle of a Thousand Faces is ideal for you and the other Children of the Forest. The Old Gods are strongest there. You will find peace in those lands," said Aegon with the Children of the Forest looking extremely happy at this news.
"We would be honored for your aid great King," said Leaf with Aegon nodding before motioning them to get on Revanchist's back.
They were all heading home where they belonged.
(King's Landing-Year Later)
She was brought into the throne room. Unsullied on either side dragging her into the room. She tried to fight back against them. Claw, bite, and kick her way to freedom. But it was all for not. She knew why they had come for her and had tried to flee. The woman even considered ending her life. To spite the King and his Queen from taking her back to King's Landing alive. But they had come to quickly, bound her hands, feet, and a bag over her head. The people around the woman shocked these people on the command of the King had come to take her to King's Landing to face justice for a crime they knew not had been performed by this one person.
After the woman was thrown to the floor in the middle of the throne room, one of the Unsullied guards removed the bag from the head of the prisoner, who was now glaring at the Iron Throne where Aegon and Margery Targaryen sat. Her eyes were burning with hatred for the two of them. One being the King and other for marrying said King despite what she thought of him.
"You just couldn't let things go. Could you Catelyn Tully," said Aegon with the woman now identified as Catelyn Tully snarl slightly at him.
"How could I let it go? My brother is dead. My sister is dead. My Father is dead. Only my Uncle is alive, and he has abandoned me. How can you expect me to let it go when the source of it all is sitting on that ghastly chair?" said Catelyn angrily at the King.
"Considering the crimes your family committed, you expect me to let them go with a slap on the wrist? Your brother went to the Wall and died there when I was within my right to end his life in this very room with the other traitors that day. Your Father died for breaking his oath to my House all so he could rise higher from those who usurped it. Your House's words are Family Duty Honor, correct? Where is the honor of breaking your oaths to my House? You betrayed your own family, your own children, when you attempted to conspire with the Freys and the Boltons to kill me at a wedding. You chose to hate me over your duty to supporting your husband's decision when raising me alongside Robb and the others. Even when the truth was revealed, you still hated me for being alive, and not for being a supposed bastard," said Aegon with Catelyn looking away, but the rage in her eyes did not lessen.
For the past few years since her exile to Dorne to raise bastard children in an orphanage, Catelyn had been in her own (or what she perceived to be) Hell in being around so many motherless children. They were all well behaved children while under her care. She would give them all that much. But in her heart, she hated them for being what the Seven told her was evil, deceitful, and sinful children who coveted what true born children had in life. They all acted innocent and honest now while under her watchful eyes, but Catelyn knew it was only a matter of time before their vile nature manifested itself.
She had tried to get them blessed in the eyes of the Seven. A Sept, not even a big one, just a small one, was requested by her when writing a letter to Prince Doran about it. It wasn't an unreasonable request in her mind. She had stated such religious guidance for the children would make sure they stayed on the honest a true path of light the Gods of the Seven Faith preached.
Prince Doran's response back in his letter had not been pleasant given it was a definitive one-worded response that clearly left no room for argument on her part.
"No."
She had tried to get a Septon or Septa to visit as much as possible in order to gain some kind of foothold with her faith in Dorne. But it was next to impossible. Doran had anticipated her actions after his one-word answer and made sure all Septons and Septas were sent back to the Sept they had left from unless they had written permission from the Prince of Dorne himself.
With her plan to push for the Seven Faith to have a foothold in Dorne, Catelyn refocused on her children in the hopes of reconciling with them, as well as convince them rebel against the King in the future. Or if not in their lifetime, their own children could do it in their place. For a time, she had played the part of accepting her punishment for some time, but eventually the letters sent to each of them had spoken of not trusting the King. How the former bastard would one day be consumed with madness his House was known for and drown in the trapping of power. How the King would betray hem. Take everything from them. How they should prepare for war against the King and his allies with allies of their own.
The replies from her children had been immediate. Telling her they would not and to stop such talk since it was treason to even write such things in her letters. Not only that, but Cat's children had basically replied back stating they could not and would not defend her for writing such things. She had ignored their pleas to stop writing such things and continued to convince them with each new letter on how to act with future allies, who to reach when at parties or tourneys, and who their children should marry to further reinforce alliances made between Houses.
She should have known they would come for her after the last letter she sent to Robb about removing his Targaryen for a wife and replace her for one that was from a powerful House. One that was capable of challenging Aegon when the war she envisioned came to pass. Catelyn stopped getting letters from any of her children regarding her life in Dorne and everything else. When a group of Dornish men came to orphanage, Catelyn tried to flee. But her time in Dorne was limited in terms of knowledge of terrain since she didn't venture far from the building per Prince Doran's command.
After fleeing from Dornish soldiers failed, she quickly threatened to kill herself with the knife hidden in her sleeve to prevent herself from being taken alive to the bastard who called himself a King. The men didn't care though. They told her as such. Dead or alive, they would bring her to the King. If she died, it didn't matter, as they would let Aegon decide what to do with her corpse. They had basically told the woman that nothing she did mattered when it came to her own life. Whether she took it or not was of no issue to them or the King. Only that she be brought to the King to decide what to do with the woman when in his presence.
At that point, all Catelyn could do was cry, drop the knife, and be taken away to be transported to King's Landing to face final judgement from the Seven damned King.
"You have taken everything from me with your actions," said Catelyn with Aegon glaring down at the woman with right hand drumming on the arm rest of the Iron Throne.
"It is true my actions have resulted in your House falling far. However, my actions were a result of the consequences born from your House. From your father. From your brother. From your sister. From you. You say I have taken everything from you. Yet, if that were true, I could have banned your children, my cousins, from writing you letters to see how you were doing in your position at the Dornish orphanage. I did not. I could have been even crueler and sent you into exile all the way to Essos. I did not. I could have even gone so far as to use your own faith against you and have you performing the infamous Walk of Atonement. I did not. If anything, I have become too merciful in my actions with you and this is the result of it," said Aegon with his anger showing with each passing moment.
And with each passing moment when he spoke those words, they made Catelyn flinch.
"My husband has been merciful to you my Lady. But the time for mercy is over. You tried to insight your children to rise against their cousin in secret. To seek out allies to stir another rebellion. Each letter written to your children regarding this treason was given to the King shortly after being received by them. Each time, your children begged my husband for mercy and to let them handle this stupidity. Since you are their Mother, it wasn't difficult to understand and we let them handle it. But when you send a letter to your eldest son to cast down my husband's Aunt, who he married, and replace her with a wife from another powerful House capable of challenging the dragon. Do you think after such a letter or any letters written in the future, we would allow this to continue?" added Margery since she knew her husband had been infuriated at the woman in front of them after reading the letter.
At first, they tolerated the treasonous words this woman wrote to her children. They held no weight and Robb, Sansa, Arya, Brandon, and Rickon would never listen. But they wanted to handle this on their own and Aegon agreed to let them since this was between them and their Mother. But when the letter Robb had sent him with Catelyn's suggestion to him that Daenerys should be disposed of silently and remarry to a Southern House with the military and political means of fighting the dragon, it was too much. Since it was clear that all five Stark children now adults of this stupid woman, who they called a Mother, could not reach her in getting such hate filled and treasonous thoughts on paper to stop, the King and Queen felt this had to be dealt with.
Both quickly and decisively.
"Nothing to say? You were so vocal with my Hand about your hatred for me the last time you were here in King's Landing and faced judgment for your future crimes against us. Surely you have something to say now," commented Aegon with Catelyn keeping her mouth shut.
"It appears she has nothing to say on the issue your Grace," said Varys calmly while looking sadly at the woman who held such a hatred for a single person, even after knowing the truth.
"Apparently not Lord Varys. Not that I would expect this woman to have anything to say considering the evidence against her. There is no defense. There is no excuse. As such, there can be no mercy. Not this time," replied Aegon with Catelyn now looking desperate to escape her impending death.
"I demand a Trial by Combat!" exclaimed Catelyn quickly and hoping to escape her end.
"Denied! First, this is not a trial. Second, your crimes here this day have been known to everyone in the Seven Kingdoms so a trial would be pointless. Third, if we allowed it, you would name my Uncle and Hand as your Champion. And as such, I would have to name someone else to win the Trial by Combat to prevent you from going free. The end result would be my champion killing my Uncle just to get to you, which would make me look petty in the eyes of the people. Not only that, but the loss of my Uncle is something that would hurt me deeply. Something you intended as a form of revenge against myself and my Uncle for protecting me all those years ago. I will not allow a shallow, hypocritical woman like you to take control of things here. Your end is now. Your death is now," said Aegon firmly while he rose from his throne and walked down the steps with his sword drawn.
"Wait! Please your Grace! I am sorry! For everything! Please don't kill me! Please! I beg of you! MERCY!" exclaimed Catelyn in fear since the ramifications and had her head brought down by the two Unsullied guards.
"The mercy I gave you is spent. I gave you mercy years ago when I sent you to Dorne in order to learn how to properly take care of children who were not your own. To learn how to love motherless children who wished to be loved above all else. Yet you would spit on my mercy. Spit on the life I gave you over the fact I could have taken your life and not be in the wrong! You wrote of treason. You wrote of having my Aunt removed through nefarious means. You spoke of trying get your children, my cousins, involved in rebelling against me. There can be no mercy here, except for the fact my Uncle is not here to witness this moment given how much it will hurt him to witness your end. Though such mercy is more for him instead of you," said Aegon while the woman in front of him began crying all the while whispering for him to show her mercy one more time.
But he could not. There was to be no mercy here. This woman had been given a way-out years ago at the request of her husband. A husband who was the King's Uncle by blood while trying to be a Father to him despite everything surrounding Aegon's life at the time. The King had granted the mercy and it had been repaid with the woman trying to insight rebellion, treason, and using his own cousins no less.
Such crimes warranted only one true punishment. Death. And in this woman's case, it was to be done by the King himself. As was the way of the North. As it was the old way as Lord Stark had long since told his children.
The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.
"If you have anything to say Lady Catelyn, now is the time," said Aegon with his sword at the ready with Catelyn crying tears down her face before looking up at the King with defeat eyes.
Eyes finally showing acceptance of who was on the Iron Throne.
"Long live…the King," whispered Catelyn with Aegon nodding at her acceptance and tightening his grip on the sword in his hands.
Before he brought it up high and brought it down on the woman who was once Catelyn Tully Stark.
"May you find peace among the Seven when facing their judgement," said Aegon before he took a cloth and cleaned the blade.
"It had to be done husband. No matter how much we wish it weren't," commented Margery with Aegon sighing since it had to be done for the sake of everyone.
"I know. But she was the Mother to my cousins. How can I look at them or they look at me knowing she died by my hands?" asked Aegon while Margery held his hand in comfort.
"She wrote words of treason my love. She wrote the words and sent them to her children in hopes they would speak them. To destroy what you helped create once you were crowned King. The people here and throughout the Seven Kingdoms are healthy, happy, and sing your praises from the North to the South. From the Westernlands of Casterly Rock to the East in the Vale and into Essos itself. She wanted to destroy all that you helped create out of some petty need for revenge despite it was here actions that caused it," replied Margery with Aegon nodding since he had said as much in the throne room.
"I know. I also know every action has consequences. I just want to make sure my actions here was the right one," said Aegon with Margery smiling and began to lead him out of the throne room.
"Your actions were correct my love. Everything you have ever done leading to and after becoming King has been the right choice," said Margery while leading Aegon through the halls to the gardens where there two sons were playing Brienne of Tarth standing watch over them.
The first woman to ever become a member of the Kingsguard at the request of Margery to Aegon in order to give woman a purpose she thought was lost to her. Aegon agreed since Brienne had proven herself capable of fighting when at the Wall and wasn't about to let such potential slip away. So, when the offer was made to the woman, Brienne accepted it and became a member of the Kingsguard with pride swelling within her body. She wrote to her Father, who had been proud of his daughter, knowing she had fought at the Wall against the army of the undead, returned home alive, and was rewarded for it despite the previous actions prior to it.
Aegon went even further to alter the rules of the Kingsguard since it seemed unfair that such loyal men and women who were given the title be denied inheriting or having any children. They were asked to be unquestionably loyal to the Crown, to the King and Queen and the royal children sired. By denying them one or two important things did not sit right with Aegon since such loyalty should be rewarded. As such, he stated the Kingsguard could marry, keep their family titles, and have children should they wish it.
"They get stronger with each passing day. What does the future hold for them, I can't help but wonder," said Margery with a smile while seeing both Aemon and Jaehaerys playing and laughing.
Aegon kept quiet while looking into the future with the Force. Seeing Yara Greyjoy sailing the seas with her remaining Iron Born, never truly settling down any one place. It was a harsh life, but she made it work and was surprisingly happy with it until the end. The end coming for the fleet of Iron Born ships eventually being consumed in various storms throughout the seas and brought to her Drowned God. Even when Yara met her end, the smile that was on it told Aegon she had died happy due to dying at sea was what she wanted most. The only thing Yara left behind was a child, a son, which she had left at an orphanage in some distant land. The boy would never know about his Father, Mother, or his heritage as a descendant of an Iron Born woman, but would grow up to be a good man, find and marry that special someone to keep her line going for years to come.
Tyrion would live a long life with Shae. Aegon saw a total of four children with Shae. None of them being dwarfs in terms of physical stature like their Father. But they did inherit his sharp wit and tongue with a hint of Tywin in them when it came to being serious. Fortunately, the last part wasn't enough to bring about one of them being Tywin Lannister reborn. The "Imp of House Lannister" would go on to be one of the greatest Lannisters within his House. Beloved and respected by all during his time. Living to an impressive old age of 90, yet still kept his wits and humor about him like he was a young man. Shae had passed away 10 years from the world prior to his own death, but their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren kept Tyrion centered during those remaining years into his life.
He died a happy man and with a smile on his face showing it. His final days involved telling a joke about a honeycomb and jackass being brought into a brothel.
Robb would live a happy life with Daenerys. Ordinarily, the Northern Lords would be hesitant to accept a woman not born of the North into the fold. Even more so after what happened with Eddard Stark's wife and what she tried to do during her time as Lady Stark of Winterfell. Fortunately, Daenerys was not one of those Southern Ladies who did not except sew, pray, and make babies with their husband. She was a Targaryen first and foremost meaning the woman was not weak willed either. Robb found the woman was quite helpful in helping run the North and despite some arguments on some things (and they would have them), the two would be happily married with a surprising number of six children as proof of it.
The same could be said for the other members of House Stark with Sansa, Arya, Brandon, Rickon, and all the major Houses who took part in the Game of Thrones with this generation. Each one he helped was happy and content with their lives while growing stronger, wiser, and better as time went by. The story of the White Walkers return would be told from generation to generation. The story about the corrupt Maesters, the bleeding of the Seven Faith, the fall of the treacherous House Frey and House Bolton, and Robert's Rebellion covering for what would be called the Falcon's Conspiracy.
Aegon would ensure history would tell the stories correctly, accurately, and make sure the realms of men knew of the players responsible for protecting it while playing the Game of Thrones.
"Indeed. The future is always in motion. There are many possibilities. Many outcomes. All we can do is try our best and see what happens in the end. But I know one thing above all else regarding the future of our children," said Aegon with a smile on his face.
"And what is that my love?" asked Margery curiously with Aegon looking at her and kissed the woman passionately.
"They will be loved by their parents. Loved and guided by us to help make sure the future is a bright one and continues to be bright long after we are gone from this world," said Aegon with Margery smiling.
"A bright future to be sure," commented Margery while watching their children play.
"Long may it reign," said Aegon with a smile on his face.
