I was five when I found out about the gods and monsters. A man had snatched the dolphin plushie that my mom made me when I was three and used it to lure me away from where I was waiting for my mom to pick me up from school. After I had followed him into an alleyway he had revealed himself to be a cyclops. I tried to run, but another one was blocking the entrance.
"Looks like we got ourselves an easy meal this time brother. And with how strong her scent is she'll be delicious." The first one grinned at what his apparent brother had said. His teeth were all kinds of crooked and yellow, not to mention sharp.
"I hear they taste better when they're young anyway. Let's get to it." He pulled out a knife and the other one grabbed my arms and held them behind my back. I tried to get away, but he was too strong.
"Please don't hurt me, I didn't do anything." They simply laughed and the one with the knife pressed it right against my chest.
"Don't worry little girl. It'll only hurt for a minute." He began to press harder, but suddenly disappeared in a poof of golden dust.
"It's bad enough that you beasts eat people, but to go after a child… despicable." It was a native american (not that I knew what that was at the time) man, with a strange feather wove into his ponytail and holding an axe. The cyclops growled and threw me into a wall.
"Gods aren't allowed to interfere, leave." The man gave a hollow laugh.
"I'm not one of those lazy bastards. I actually help people." He vanished, and the cyclops disintegrated, before reappearing in front of me with my dolphin. "Let's get you somewhere safe little one." Though still scared he had saved me, so I took his hand and he led me out of the alleyway. We made it back to the school, where my mother was shouting at the teachers.
"HOW DID YOU NOT NOTICE MY DAUGHTER WANDERING OFF! IF ANYTHING HAS HAPPENED TO HER IT'S ON YOUR HEADS." The man led me over to her.
"Excuse me miss, I believe this is yours." Her head whipped around to look at us, and upon seeing me she scooped me up in a hug.
"Oh thank the gods, I thought something had happened." I hugged her back, and the man cleared his throat.
"The thing is, something almost did happen." She looked ready to begin interrogating him. "We should probably take this to a more secure place, this isn't something you talk about in public." She nodded in understanding.
"We'll take it to my place, would you like a ride." He shook his head.
"I'll follow on foot." She didn't question it as she loaded me into my booster seat.
"I'll see you there then."
We were sitting in the living room with the man, Mom holding me in her lap.
"I guess you're here to say that Perci needs to go to camp." A disgusted look flashed across his face.
"Not at all, in fact I would advise against it unless you want her to end up as an expendable pawn." Mom seemed surprised. "I'm sorry, I should introduce myself. I am Running Wolf, though you may call me wolf if you want, and I'm a son of the god Raven(1)." Mom once more seemed shocked.
"That's not one of the greeks." He nodded.
"He's one of the native gods. I was found by a satyr when I was about ten after killing a hellhound. I went to the camp, and it was very obvious that I was different from the rest of them. The campers didn't mind, but the gods got angry, saying that I was a spy for the natives trying to corrupt their children. Of the twelve on the council only Artemis and Hephaestus protested. Artemis because she had been watching me, interested in learning about another hunter, and I'm not sure why Hephaestus supported me. They attempted to turn me into a monster, so that I could be killed over and over by other demigods, but my father intervened. Instead I have monster form, a demonic looking bird. Before you panic, I have never killed another demigod that wasn't threatening innocents. Now onto what happened today. Your daughter was lured away by a cyclops, and another one trapped her there. I arrived in time to save her."
"If monsters are already finding her, how will she survive without being in camp?"
"That's where I would like to give you an offer. I'll train her to sword fight, but that isn't always enough. I suggest that you pull her out of the school system, I have contacts that can teach her the things she needs to pass the tests that the state says a child needs to pass, as well as contacts to teach her things like martial arts, gymnastics, and I'm sure that I know someone to teach her most other extra curricular that she may want to learn."
"I wanted her to have as normal a childhood as possible. Have friends, go to school, and the like."
"Mom, I don't like school anyway. All the other kids make fun of me because it's hard for me to read." She sighed before smiling at Running Wolf.
"I'll do it. How can I repay you? Surely you wouldn't do this for free." He smiled at her, a nice, friendly smile that made her blush.
"I need no payment, but if you insist I would love to have a shower and sleep in an actual bed. And Perci, you may not believe me, but you're going to hate me with every fiber of your being."
It had been five years since that day, and I had become a well known name in gymnastics, martial arts, and sword fighting championships, as well as in the classical music scene. Wolf hadn't wanted me to participate in tournaments, but I talked him into it with the help of my gymnastics teacher Miyazaki, a daughter of Ishtar(2). The deciding factor for Wolf was the amount of money they would bring in so that Mom didn't have to work as much. At this point it was hard to leave the house without being recognized by someone. I was brought out of my thoughts as a wooden sword was slammed into the top of my head.
"Focus child, we're not leaving today until you land a hit on me." We had already been going at it for two hours and I was drenched in sweat. I got back into my starting stance and charged. He dodged each of my swings with minimal effort, but I refused to get angry, instead looking for the right moment. About half an hour later he made a full dodge to throw me off balance, and instead of trying to correct my sword swing I dropped the sword and pulled out a knife. I spun around and slammed the handle of the knife into his cheek, sending him sprawling on the ground.
"I did it!" I ran over to where Mom and my other teachers were watching the spar. "I finally landed a hit on Wolf!" They all smiled and Mom gave me a hug. I gave Wolf a sheepish look as he walked over and ruffled my hair. "Sorry about fighting dirty." He smiled cheekily.
"There is no fighting dirty against monsters Persis. To be honest I expected you to start using those moves in our spars right after Coyote stopped by. Holding off until now threw me off guard. I'm proud of you." I mostly succeeded in holding my squeal of happiness. His expression turned serious. "I'm sorry to say this but we have to leave, all of us." My happiness faded away faster than a person could flick a switch.
"What do you mean you have to leave, I still have a lot to learn." He shook his head sadly.
"Not as much as you think, and you can figure most of it out by yourself. But we're not leaving because you've finished your training, that is never truly over. I was supposed to leave years ago, but I pushed it off as long as I could. I was never meant to stay in one place for too long, it's not in my nature. And I have a job to do." I felt hot tears beginning to build up in my eyes as my vision blurred. Miyazaki gave me a hug.
"Do not cry Perci-Chan, you will see us again. Just not as often." Wolf laid a hand on my shoulder.
"Think of it like this Perci, if I stay, I might not be able to save the next little girl about to be eaten by a pair of cyclops." As much as I didn't like it, I nodded in understanding. The goodbyes lasted about an hour, but after that Mom and I were alone in our house for the first time.
I woke up to a knock on my door and, after putting on a pair of shorts and a shirt, I opened the door. I was immediately punched in the face, and I fell to the ground where I was immediately wrapped in chains and flashed away. When my vision cleared, I saw Zeus smirking at me.
"Persis Daphnee Jackson, you are accused of betraying Olympus by colluding with Gaia. What do you have to say for yourself!" Looking at the rest of the council, I knew I was screwed. Ten of the fourteen(4) Olympians clearly didn't care if I was guilty or not, they just wanted me gone, including my father.
"Oh don't even bother! We all know that this is a farce, you're just afraid that I'm getting too powerful for you to control so you're making up fake crimes to get validation for killing me."
"Insolent brat! I should smite you where you stand, but I'm a generous king, and I say we put to a vote. Raise your hand if you vote for Persis to be turned into a monster as punishment for her crimes." All hands were raised with the exception of Hades, Hestia, Artemis, and Hephaestus. "And those against?" This was said mockingly, but they raised their hands anyway. "It has been decided." I shut my eyes as he threw his master bolt at me, but before it could hit me I felt a rush of heat and I opened my eyes to see that I was on Calypso's island once again.
"Perci, we don't have much time." It was Hestia. "It won't take too long for Zeus to realize what we did." Hades, Hephaestus, and Artemis were there as well. Calypso wasn't, as Leo had managed to take her off the island.
"We've known that they were planning something like this for a few weeks, so we've been working on a way to save you." This was Hades. "We managed to contact the gods of a different world, and they've agreed to let us send you there." Hephaestus spoke now.
"There are still monsters in this world, though they are different to the ones you are used to. I've reforged your sword and made you another." He tossed me two pens, one was bronze and gold, while the other was silver and black. "I've left it up to you to name them. And like how your original sword was imbued with the power of the ocean, the bronze and gold one has a small sliver of Hestia and my power imbued into it while the silver and black one has Artemis and Hades power imbued into it."
"Before we send you off, we were hoping that you would accept becoming our champion. It'll remove any connection you have to Posiedon, including your powers, but you'll get different powers as a result of being our champion." It didn't take me long to make a decision, I didn't want to go back to Tartarus or be killed, and with his betrayal I didn't want anything to tie me to Poseidon.
"I'll do it." They smiled at me.
"This will probably hurt, as we'll be effectively rewriting your DNA. You'll probably look different as a result as well." Each of them placed a hand on my head, and I was overcome by pain that was far worse than my dip in the river Styx or even my time in Tartarus where the air itself was trying to kill me. I passed out.
I groaned as I woke up, rubbing my head and yelping. I had animal ears, and some quick investigation revealed that I also had a tail, a deer's tail to be precise. Seeing a familiar bag next to me, I dug through it to find my handheld mirror. I had deer ears, my hair had changed to Auburn(Though I still had the white streak from holding the sky when I was fourteen), and my eyes were silver.
"Somehow I feel like this had nothing to do with Hestia or the other three." I emptied my bag to sort out my supplies, if only to take my mind off the fact that I was now part animal. I had everything that I normally did: clothes, vanilia ration bars, water bottles, a flashlight, some mortal painkillers, and my dolphin plush. I took it everywhere with me, especially once I got to camp so that I would have something to remind me of her when I was on quests. My Nectar and Ambrosia were gone, but in their place was a note.
'Perci, we're sorry that we didn't have more time to explain things, but Zeus sensed the surge of power when we adopted you, and Poseidon felt his link to you shatter. As we told you, you are in a kind of alternate reality, with different gods and monsters. You've probably noticed that you look different, and have animal features. The gods of your new world intervened when we adopted you, giving you the animal traits. At least it was one of our sacred animals instead of some random animal though. We were informed that you would be placed in the middle of what is essentially a hero school's initiation. A message was delivered to the headmaster, and he has set up something for you at the ruin that is in the same direction of the cliff. No matter what you do, we will be proud of you.' I had to wipe a few stray tears at the last part, it was nice to have godly parents that cared. After packing everything back up, I shouldered my bad.
"Might as well try this 'hero school'. It'll be a new experience at least." I went in the direction of the ruin.
It didn't take me long to find the ruin, though I got delayed a few times by black werewolf looking monsters, and few bears, all of which were covered in bone plating. With both my swords it was laughably easy to kill them. As I approached, I saw various oversized chess pieces, but the one that caught my attention was the white queen. There was a plaque on it's pedestal that read, 'reserved for Persis'. With a small shrug I picked it up and put it into my bag.
Two girls walked casually up to me, a blonde and a girl with black hair and a bow.
"It seems we aren't the first to make it here." The blonde grabbed a white knight after giving me a smile.
"How about the little pony?" The other girl shook her head in exasperation, but smiled nonetheless. "Who are you? I didn't see you in the auditorium last night."
"I'm Perci, and yeah I wasn't there last night, I had a bit of a delay." At that moment a blonde guy flew through the air, impacting a falling redhead and sending both of them into a tree.
"Did your sister just fall from the sky?" This was followed by a roar, and one of the bear monsters fell into our clearing. There was a ginger on it's back, and a few seconds later a guy with black hair that had a pink streak came running.
"Nora, PLEASE never do that again."
"Did she just ride in on an ursa?" Nora darted past us to grab a white rook.
"I'm queen of the cas~tle, I'm queen of the cas~tle!"
"Coming Ren." at that point the redhead from the tree made her way over.
"NORA!" Nora shouted her own name as she came up between them.
"How could you leave me‽" I looked up to see a white haired girl falling from the sky after seemingly jumping off of a giant bird. The blonde boy tried to catch her, but he ended up on the ground with her on his back.
"CAN EVERYONE JUST CALM DOWN FOR FIVE SECONDS!" When the blonde girl shouted her eyes turned red and flames sprung up around her. Roughly five seconds later another redhead was thrown at our feet by a giant scorpion.
"Great the gang's all here, now we can die together!" The first redhead pulled out a scythe.
"Not if I have anything to say about it!" Before she could rush it, I grabbed her by the hood.
"Are you suicidal? It's exoskeleton should be far too tough for your weapon to penetrate. Does anyone have a way to freeze it in place?" The white haired girl pulled out a rapier and nodded. "Then get to it." I pushed the redhead and the blonde toward the ruin. "Grab your chess piece and get ready to go, the birds coming back."
"Run and live, that's a plan I can get behind." As he spoke, the white haired girl jammed her rapier into the ground, causing ice to shoot along the ground and freeze the scorpions legs in place. I heard a familiar roar/growl in the forest. Everyone else paled as several trees in the forest were knocked down.
"I'll take care of these, you guys go." They looked at me like I was insane.
"Are you suicidal‽ A fully trained hunter would have trouble taking on these two alone, and that's not even mentioning whatever monster is in the woods!" I gave them my signature lopsided smile.
"I've literally trained for this my whole life, I can do this, but I can't go all out with you here. Trust me." The redhead that had been chased by the scorpion caught looked me in the eye for a second before nodding.
"Come on, she knows what she's doing." They still seemed reluctant to leave me, but seemed to take her word word for it. They left in the direction of the cliffs, and I couldn't help the, probably scary, smirk that began to spread across my face.
"Bring it Bitches!"
(1) Raven Is one of the Native American Gods, He is a trickster god.
(2)Ishtar is the Mesopotamian goddess of War and Sex.
(3)The events of the original series happens, but Percy is a girl, is smarter, and never gets with Annabeth.
(4)I say fourteen because the gods actually honored Perci's request to put Hades and Hestia back on the council.
