A/N: I don't claim ownership of MHA
Kai was normally disgusted by a lot of things other people did, especially when it came to quirks and the whole heroes versus villains debacle that has been too overdone since the emergence of quirks and quirk usage laws. Too many horrible people could gain the title of hero and run the real meaning of the word through the dirt.
However what he had just witnessed was definitely something that was far more disgusting than anything he had ever seen before. A man, one of the heroes, beat his child and abandon the boy, who looked no older than five or six. Kai was too frozen in disgust at first to actually stop the man but snapped out of it only moments after the man had left to check on the boy. Thankfully the boy wasn't too badly hurt, which didn't really matter considering Kai's quirk could reassemble people and heal any injuries like they never happened.
Studying the boy he was disgusted to see the burn mark on the back of his neck most of all among the injuries. The boy was awake but not looking at Kai, he was instead crying and looking at the ground.
"What is your name?" Kai took off one of his gloves, something that was a rare occurrence for him. The boy continued to cry and flinched hard when Kai put his fingers against the burnt back of his neck.
"Please don't hurt me." The boy tried to move away.
"I'm not... I'm not a villain like that man." Kai really didn't know another word for someone who would hurt this kid like this so much. "I'm here to help."
The boy calmed down a little. "I'm... Izuku." He still flinched when the man out his hand back against his neck, even though it was placed gently.
"It will only sting for a second." Kai said as he used his quirk, manipulating the wounds to be gone and the boy in perfect health. "See? Good as new."
"Thank you Mister Hero." The boy Izuku finally looked up at Kai, and he could the boy's hurt emerald green eyes. It actually made Kai hesitate when this boy called him a hero. It was an odd, good feeling. One that felt better than all the years he was part of the Yakuza. He definitely wasn't a hero or anyone good by normal standards, but somehow to this kid he was a hero.
"Why..." Kai wanted to ask what made him a hero but instead asked another question. "Why did he do this?"
"My dad says... I'm worthless." Izuku looked back down again.
Kai grit his teeth, how could someone's father just tell them that. "Why?" Wasn't that man supposed to be one of the Pro Heroes?
"Because I'm... quirkless." The boy muttered.
Kai had definitely murdered and killed people before, he never really cared while doing it for the most part. However this kid's father was definitely someone he would love to tear limb from limb over and over again with his quirk. How can you judge a child as worthless because of a condition of their birth they had no control over!? He never really felt as much hate as he did for that man
"Am I... worthless?" The boy asked carefully, looking up into Kai's gold eyes with his own broken emerald eyes.
Something changed in the man at the action of the boy, the man that was described by others in the Yakuza as ruthless, sadistic, cruel and evil... felt the urge to protect that boy. "You are not worthless." He stated, so sure of those words. This boy made him feel different and stronger emotions than Kai has ever felt, that alone made the boy not worthless.
"I'm not?" Izuku sounded way too surprised by that.
"You are worth something." Kai nodded. "He isn't."
"But Kacchan says that he is a Pro Hero, and matters more than me." If his father was worthless doesn't that make him less than worthless?
"Well this man just acted like a villain." Kai wasn't even questioning himself using those oversaturated terms at this point anymore. "He is worthless for attacking you like that."
"Really?"
"Really." Kai nodded. "I see a spark." He really did. He didn't know what the spark was but this boy definitely had it.
"What does it do?" The boy was confused about this spark he apparently had.
"I don't know. Do you have anywhere that is a good place to stay?" The man really didn't want to leave the kid until he knew wherever the boy was out at was a place he would be safe.
The boy shook his head. "I only had my dad."
"No mother?" Kai asked.
"I never met my mom. Dad said she was a disgrace."
This father was sounding more and more of a pathetic human to Kai. He wondered if the father had anything to do with the mother not being there. He also couldn't just leave the boy here. "You're coming with me."
"What?" The boy looked up again in confusion.
"You're coming with me. You have nowhere good to go so I am going to find you a place where you are safe." Kai took a few steps back the way he came through the alley, but stopped when he noticed the boy hadn't followed yet. "Come on let's go."
"Okay Mister Hero." Izuku shook his hesitation off and got up to follow Kai.
"I'm not a hero. My name is Kai Chisaki."
"Sorry Mister Kai Chisaki." The boy apologized.
That day was definitely a day the Yakuza weren't prepared for. Kai had shown up through the door many times in different ways, covered with blood, dragging bodies with his quirk and the such, but none of them were expecting him to open the door and guide a five year old boy into their main building.
Kai ignored the looks of slight confusion the others gave him and walked through the building to his bosses office, the young boy following him like a duckling looking at every person he saw with wide eyes.
Kai walked into the open door of his adoptive father's office. "Hello Father."
"Ah Kai, how are you doing today?" The aged but still powerful man asked, he noticed the kid who was hiding partially behind Kai. "Who is the little one?"
"He is Izuku. I'm going to keep him with me."
"Did you... take this Izuku?" It wouldn't be out of the question for Kai to do something like that, even if he hasn't before.
"No. He has nowhere and no one."
"Rival group?" It also wouldn't have been out of the question if Kai murdered a rival group and found a kid of those he murdered and just take them. He hasn't done it before but Kai was very sadistic and a sociopath, so it wasn't entirely impossible.
"No. He is actually the son of a Pro Hero." The golden eyed man didn't hide his disgust saying that term. "The real father abandoned him saying he was worthless but I believe he isn't."
The boss of the Yakuza nodded, while also noting how this was similar to how he had met Kai himself, finding the lad as a young boy who was abandoned. "Well welcome to the Yakuza Izuku."
"What is the Yakuza?" Izuku spoke for the first time in the office. Something felt off to Kai about this situation, making him think hard.
The boss decided to answer the question. "We are a group of-"
"I'm sorry for my rudeness, but I don't think Izuku belongs here." Kai motioned to the shady business going on just outside the door in the main area. "In this."
The boss raised an eyebrow. "Surely he will grow into it." Hell Kai definitely grew into it, becoming the main reason their group was as feared as it was at that point.
"I'm sorry father but something in me... it's telling me that something like this... it's not him."
"I can be it." Izuku didn't want to lose the one person who believed in him, actually tugging on Kai's pants leg to get his attention.
Kai looked down and saw those emerald eyes again, and felt that same odd feeling if the urge to protect this kid. The boy had kindness in his eyes, even if it was buried under the sadness they also held. The Yakuza was not a place for the boy, every action Kai has ever done for the name of this group flashed through his mind, making him realize for the first time how twisted he really was. This boy couldn't be like that. "I'm sorry but that's not what your spark is."
"I can make it that!" Izuku argued.
"Kai..." The boss if the Yakuza knew exactly what was going through his adoptive son's head. It was something he almost felt when he first took Kai in. Perhaps he should give him time to come to terms with it. "Why not let him see if he does fit here?"
Kai mulled it over for a second. "I suppose."
"I can do it!" Izuku declared, earning a soft smile from the Yakuza boss.
"Is it possible for me to forge the documents to adopt him so that it won't be questioned at all?" Kai asked. "As well as run a medical test on him to make sure he is healthy?"
"Of course. That will only take a second to get going."
Kai learned a lot from the checks on Izuku. He had surprisingly perfect health, despite early signs of malnourishment that were present, save for the injuries, had type O blood, and found the actual file on him.
His last name was Midoriya. He was the son of Hisashi Midoriya, also known as the Pro Hero Spitfire, and Inko Midoriya. It turns out that Inko Midoriya had passed away shortly after giving birth to Izuku due to heart complications. Hisashi never made it public he had a son at first, which was something Kai found odd. The whole relationship between Izuku's parents was odd to Kai because after he did more digging it looks like there were signs of abuse and such, all with Hisashi being the guilty party. Kai only had his hate for this man grow, this man was a so called Hero? Even if Kai found the whole heroes and villains debacle that had been created in the past few decades pointless and idiotic it sickened him that this man was getting labeled a Hero by the public just because he had the title of Pro Hero. No one bothered to look under the curtain at this man who was not anywhere close to an actual hero, let alone whatever people believed them to be nowadays.
The boy was rather compliant with Kai, not questioning anything at all, which made the man frown because he didn't like how much the boy was just... so trusting of him. Kai was definitely not someone a boy like Izuku should trust, but yet the boy did. Granted Kai hadn't done anything yet to make the boy do anything but trust him, it still bothered him, especially the fact that just a small number of interactions with this boy made him realize all of a sudden how twisted he was. It was confusing how this boy made him reevaluate his life like this.
"You're in mostly good health." Kai said to the boy as he gave the boy a bandage to out over the point on his arm where they drew blood. "However you really need to eat."
"I haven't eaten in two days." The boy replied.
Kai wanted to find this Hisashi and slam him against a wall a few couple hundred times. "Which is why you need food. You should have three meals a day."
"I only had one."
"Well that's changing." Kai stated. "Things are going to be different from how that man raised you." Raise was definitely not the proper word but it was what Kai used.
"How?" The boy looked confused.
"Well for one, you don't have to worry for your safety. You'll have a good home."
"This is where you will staying Izuku." Kai said as he opened the door to a modest house, near the edge of the city. The house had two floors, four bedrooms and was kept completely clean.
"It's nice." The five year old responded.
"Your room is the first one on the right side up the stairs." Kai pointed to the stairs. "Come back down after you get situated. I will prepare a meal." He then kind of realized he doesn't know that many meals to make. He would have to actually look up a good diet for the five year old in his care, that and he realized this house didn't actually have food. Perhaps he could go get some from a store.
Kai would never say it out loud but he felt like an idiot right there in the store, looking at frozen food realizing he really didn't know what was good food for a five year old, the said five year old standing silently next to him. He genuinely didn't know what he should be getting at all. It was something he felt was obvious, given maybe the fact that humans probably ate the same type of healthy diet their entire lives, but he also wanted to be sure on this. He found it annoying how he was a feared Yakuza but was clueless on something that he would consider trivial the day before.
"Do you need help?" A soft feminine voice asked, gaining the attention of Kai and Izuku. They both looked to see a woman with chin-length blonde hair, which was swept back with a headband, a long fringe over the right side of her face, covering her right eye. She had thin, yellow, inward-tilting eyes with slit pupils and notably sharp teeth, giving her some reptilian like features. She had on a basic pair of pants and a red sweater. she looked to only be a year or two younger than Kai.
Kai would have normally told anyone talking to him to go away coldly or glare at them, but he did really need help when it came to this. He really didn't want to screw up Izuku. "Yes I actually do."
The woman gave a small smile. "What are you looking for?"
"I want to make sure Izuku gets a proper diet." He answered, wondering why this woman looked just the slightest bit familiar.
"Hi Izuku." The woman took that chance to give a nice smile to the child, who was hiding behind Kai at first but stopped when the woman was being nice and not mean.
"Hello." Izuku said weakly.
"What do you like?" She figured she could help them base something around whatever little Izuku liked.
The question looked like it confused the boy. "I don't know?" He was worried she would lose the smile when he answered.
"That's okay." The woman didn't lose her smile at all. "I didn't really like anything until I was ten."
"Really?"
"Yep." She nodded.
"What did you like?" Izuku asked. Kai let those two talk because this woman was being kind to Izuku and it looked like she was helping.
"I first liked Katsudon, this pork dish."
"Can I have that?" The boy looked up at Kai.
"I don't see why not." Kai looked to the woman. "Is that something good for him?"
"It is." she nodded. She noticed how the man did seem like he wasn't just lost getting food for the boy, but had no idea at all. She would definitely help them. "I can help you find more food as well."
"Thank you." Kai replied, thankful for the woman at that point.
"I'm Ryūko Tatsuma." The woman introduced herself.
Kai suddenly realized how he knew her, she was a Pro Hero, one who had made news recently over the raid of this Maruta Shiga person. He felt a little concern at that fact. Of all people why does he run into a Pro Hero? He had to stay calm and not cause a scene however, and she didn't know he was part of the Yakuza. "I'm Kai Chisaki." He didn't have to worry about using his real name at all, he already had managed to keep a low profile while in the Yakuza.
Ryūko smiled. "Nice to meet you Chisaki, you too Izuku."
After helping them get food Ryūko offered to help Kai cook it because he really looked like he did not know what he was doing. Kai agreed to let her help this one time, figuring he can just watch how she does it and do that on his own after that.
"It'll be ready soon Izuku." The woman said to let the boy know. "You should go wash your hands." The boy nodded before he left to use the sink.
"Thank you for this help." Kai said as he turned to the blonde woman as they entered the kitchen.
Ryūko smiled. "Any time. Izuku is a nice boy and you are a good father to him for trying."
Kai would have done a double take at that part, but it did make since that she would think he was the boy's father. "It is definitely an experience."
"May I ask where his mother is?" Ryūko was hoping she wasn't poking a wound asking that, she was just curious.
"She had some heart complications and passed away." He technically wasn't lying.
"I'm sorry for your loss." The woman turned on the oven.
"It's okay now." He replied. "So what do we do first?" He was wondering in the back of his mind how in the hell he was in a situation like this, which was something that probably the day before would not be something he would do in a million years. Especially the part about being in close proximity to other people, given his normal mysophobia, which was oddly not making him break out or even on his mind around Izuku or this woman.
The meal was surprisingly good to Kai, who wasn't one for pork but it was cooked really well. Izuku loved it which made Ryūko happy for him. She noticed the boy had a bit of sadness to his eyes and wanted to make that go away.
Kai was actually mentally questioning Ryūko, she was a Pro Hero and he figured they all were arrogant shits but she hasn't mentioned her title at all, or even hinted at it. He wanted to guess he had the wrong name and she wasn't a Pro Hero but using a spare minute earlier he did find out she was a Pro Hero, and a surprisingly humble one.
Once the food was done Ryūko bid farewell and left.
"It was nice to meet you both." Ryūko said as she was leaving the front door.
"It was a pleasure." Kai was surprised he actually meant that a little bit, why was he thinking different from before? Was meeting this little kid really making him behave so vastly different from what he was just the day before?
"Bye Miss Tatsuma!" Izuku waved happily.
"Bye Izuku." Ryūko gave a warm smile before she left.
Now it was just the two guys, Izuku looking up at the man who had taken the rope of his caretaker. "What do we do now?"
Kai was not liking how much he didn't know about raising a child. Then again he had an excuse when he was a 24 year old sociopath who spent a majority of his time doing shady business and crimes for the Yakuza. What did he want to spend his time doing at five? At five til seven he was homeless so not have to live in alleys was the answer he had.
"What do you want to do Izuku?" The man figured the five year old would be a better expert on things he would like than Kai.
"Hmmm." The five year old thought hard. "Can we watch the news?"
Was the news something kids enjoyed? Kai didn't know but he still turned the TV on to the news. A report of the weather was on at that moment. The boy actually watched it with interest and Kai was finding it a little amusing when the news swapped to a news report of a contest in Hosu that had taken place that day. Sure it was about Pro Heroes and he despised them but the boy was more focused on the contest itself, not really caring about the heroes. Anytime it swapped from the events of the contest, which was a regular team event that barred quirk usage, to talking about participating Pro Heroes Izuku would lose that look of interest.
"Do you not find the heroes interesting?" Kai asked, wondering if the boy had an opinion this early in his life.
"Some of them know dad." Izuku said quietly, pointing at one person with flaming hands. "He is actually dad's sidekick. They're jerks."
"They treated you poorly too?" Kai figured he should get a list going of the people he would disassemble.
"They didn't know. He did. He didn't stop dad."
"So do you think all heroes are bad?" Kai was trying to figure out where Izuku's head was at that moment.
"No. All Might is a hero."
Kai didn't really like All Might, but that might be the biased criminal in him not liking the strongest hero of Japan. "What makes him a good hero?"
"He is a hero. Dad isn't." Izuku responded. "All Might tries to protect everyone for the sake of them being happy and safe. Dad wanted the title of number one."
"So to you just because someone is a Pro Hero that doesn't make them a hero?" Kai asked.
"Heroes don't hurt the people who can't protect themselves. They help them, like you." Izuku answered.
This kid still really thought Kai was a hero still? "I don't really think I qualify as a hero Izuku."
"What do you think makes a hero?" Izuku asked with curiosity, the five year old focusing on Kai.
Kai never even liked Pro Heroes so he never really guessed what made a good one. The closest thing to a hero to him was the Yakuza boss who saved him from living on the streets and gave him a home. That was exactly what he just did to Izuku earlier that day, and he also saved Izuku from those injuries his father gave him. By Kai's own logic that made him the most heroic person he knew, but that didn't sit well with him given his previous beliefs. He didn't want to not answer the boy, he wanted to tell the boy what was the closest thing to the unbiased truth. What did make a hero? A real one and not those fakes who wanted attention and glory. Or was that the key to what made a real hero? Going into those situations not because you want the glory and praise of people, but because you genuinely wanted to help those who needed the help? If that was what made a true hero to Kai then that makes All Might one of the only ones he could think of that fit a real heroes mold.
"I guess someone like All Might, someone who doesn't want the praise or doesn't do it for the praise as a primary goal. Unselfish reasons make them not a bad hero."
"Dad doesn't like All Might. He says he is a fool and doesn't deserve to be number one."
"Izuku forget what your dad said." Kai figured he should get this message in now and early. "He clearly doesn't know anything if he called you worthless."
"Okay."
A news report showed a criminal attack that was just ended by a familiar woman to the two. It was Ryūko, who had just stopped a man from attacking who was revealed to be an ex of theirs.
"It's Miss Tatsuma!" Izuku got interested in the TV again, seeing the nice woman he grew to like. Kai looked also because he figured this would help him determine more on what type of hero Ryūko was. The reporter keep trying to praise Ryūko and her dragon based quirk for getting the criminal into custody but the hero kept saying it was a team effort, actually praising the hero who also has stopped the crime, who was someone called Gunhead, saying that it was all due to Gunhead that the criminal was stopped. The reporter even asked about the raid on that scientist Maruta and again Ryūko didn't mention herself at all when she said it was thanks to the leading officer Tsukauchi and new hero Kamui Woods that the man was apprehended. It actually made Kai respect her a little bit because she never once took credit for anything, even though it could be seen as annoying when the clip of the villain attack was replayed and everyone could see her dragon quirk, which made her transform into a western dragon with some of her characteristics, was clearly the thing that stopped the villain, who had four arms. She was really humble and had that same smile she had given Izuku while speaking, before trying to let Gunhead take the spotlight.
"Miss Tatsuma is so cool!" Izuku said after the interview went to Gunhead, who wasn't as interesting as Ryūko to Izuku. "She never said she was a dragon!"
"It wasn't asked." Kai stated. "Some people just don't say their quirks unless people are interested in them."
"What's your quirk!?" Izuku asked really excitedly.
Kai figured that this was one of the things he would need a minute or two to explain. Even if he didn't like quirks he could at least explain his to the boy "I call it Overhaul, I have the ability to disassemble anything I touch, as well as reassemble it in any configuration I desire, effectively giving me full control over matter."
"Whoa." Izuku had wide eyes. "That's so cool."
"It's what healed you." Kai replied.
"You're the best hero!" Izuku exclaimed. "You could fix destroyed homes, and heal people!"
Kai raised an eyebrow. This boy really thought over and over again about Kai being a hero. "Never thought to use it like that."
"You would be so cool!" Izuku nodded to his own statement.
Kai got a gut feeling, something he was finding odd sense he never got those ever, save the one that led him to cut through some alleys earlier that day that made him meet Izuku. He didn't know what it was for but it felt like it was trying to push him to think about something, something that was right there on the edge of his mind.
The next day was a odd day because for the first few minutes Kai had forgotten about the previous day's events and being in the house he did have as a hideout before. After remembering everything he looked up something to make Izuku for breakfast and had made bowls of rice and strips of fish with egg. The boy was happy for the breakfast and soon Kai went back to the main Yakuza building with Izuku following. Izuku had also gotten newer clothing that was a smaller sized outfit of Kai's outfit, that black dress shirt with matching dress pants, a pale gray tie around his neck and white lace-up sneakers. Izuku not getting a similar jacket or plague mask at that point.
It was another odd day for the other Yakuza members when their sociopathic acquaintance reappeared with the little bit, who was taking more after him, actually trying to mimic the way he walked too. Kai walked past the main area back to his father's office much like the day before.
"Hello father." Kai greeted the man who was like his actual father at this point. He had a lot on his mind and was wondering if the man would be helpful in deciphering it. The problem was he didn't want to discuss it with Izuku there.
"Hello Kai, Little Izuku." The man smiled.
"Hello." Izuku replied, not as scared as the day before.
"Father I have matters to discuss. Is their a place to keep Izuku safe during that?"
"I can ask Zenitsu to watch him for a few minutes." The man offered.
"He is fine." Kai didn't mind the guy as much.
"Zenitsu." The boss had pressed on an intercom. "Watch Little Izuku for a minute." The man released the intercom and looked at Izuku. "He is the blond outside. Don't worry, he is rather kind with children. He is actually my son-in-law."
"What's a son-in-law?" Izuku didn't know what that meant, but it sounded like a son so he guessed family.
A blond man opened walked into the open doorway. "This little Izuku?"
"Yes." The boy nodded.
"Okay. Follow me little guy." Zenitsu waited to start walking until Izuku followed.
"Now what is the matter Kai?" The Yakuza boss asked.
"I'm confused." Kai sat down across from his surrogate father.
"On what?" The aged man asked even though he had a good idea.
"This boy, Izuku. I have lived a very particular way for so long that is all suddenly being shaken just by a five year old and his words. It's confusing me why that is happening. I actually got a gut feeling yesterday and those don't happen for me."
"I went through something similar when I found you." The man stated. "I reevaluated myself because I was thinking deep down if I should let this innocent boy be tainted by what I did."
"But what we do isn't that-"
"While I don't want to be rude, I must point out that while we do have the code it wasn't easily followed. I reinstated it when you joined the family."
"Is that why you always get on me about my more questionable actions?" Kai asked.
"Truthfully yes. I felt ashamed of myself that what I was trying to avoid was what you have been starting to become." The man was hoping this wouldn't anger his adoptive son.
Kai thought for another minute. He didn't want Izuku to end up a violent sociopath like him, and doing the exact same thing as his own father will likely bring out the same results as with Kai. He would have to take an even bigger change of scenery and such to make sure the boy was not as twisted in the end like him. "I don't want him to be like this. He is... special."
Kai got that gut feeling again it told him one thought. "I don't think I can be part of the Yakuza anymore."
His adoptive father nodded, understanding the thoughts behind Kai's words without needing to hear them. "I understand. My door will always be open anytime you need to talk Kai. Take good care of Izuku."
"Thank you." Kai nodded. "I still owe you such a large debt though." Kai felt that he owed the world to this man for taking him in off of the streets.
"I believe that taking care of Izuku, much like how I did for you, would be more than enough for that."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive. Remember you always have help here if you need it. Bye Kai." the Yakuza boss had a smile.
"Thank you for being my father." Kai said with a smile. "I will visit."
"I will be looking forward to it." The boss of the Yakuza replied, having no negative feelings about Kai's decision. The man wouldn't sell them out, or join another group. His only priority now was Izuku and he wouldn't jeopardize that.
Kai left the office and found Zenitsu with Izuku near the entrance. Zenitsu reading a book while Izuku held the man's phone, having been given it as a distraction. Kai looked and saw that the boy had used the web browser to look up Ryūko, although with bad spelling. Kai nodded to Zenitsu as Izuku got up, making sure he hand the phone back to the blond man, and began to follow Kai again.
Just as oddly as Kai showed up to the building with the young boy he left, no longer a Yakuza.
For the first day of no longer being a Yakuza Kai sure didn't know what else to do with his time. It left him with all this time on his hands, which was good for watching Izuku, who liked the company. He also had to find a good education system for Izuku, he wouldn't dare send him to public schools as he remembered the one month he was in public school and it did not end well. He would find a nice private school and put Izuku there for a normal education, adding his own for Izuku after that. He also couldn't just not get a job, as much as he disliked people he also couldn't rely on the ill gotten money he had. Eventually that'll run out so he should make more money to support Izuku before that.
But what would he do? His quirk wasn't necessarily useful for most jobs he could take that requires staying out of the spotlight like he wanted. He could probably become a doctor. The environment was well sterilized which would be nice and his quirk actually would be perfect for that. He would have to take a few classes and such in order to do that however. He could become a rescue medic, helping during villain attacks and medical emergencies, his quirk would be helpful there and the money could help with Izuku. Maybe put his medical expertise into research of some kind? He didn't know what to go for but he guessed he had a bit of time to think on it.
Later, since Kai had thought about his own situation for a good while he decided to see what the boy in his care felt about his own situation. Sure Izuku was five and probably wouldn't know a good concrete thing to do, but the boy might have a general idea of something to go for. "Izuku do you know what you want to do in life?"
The five year old looked up from the shoe he was trying to teach himself how to tie. "Um..." He looked lost for a second before he answered. "I want to prove my dad wrong."
"You do?" Kai raised an eyebrow.
"He said I was worthless. You said I have a spark. I want to use that spark to show that I'm not worthless."
"Do you know how you would like to go about that?"
"Ummmm... I guess no matter what I do it will be not worthless." Izuku was thinking hard on what he really wanted to do and Kai was patient, curious about where the boy would take his words. "All Might."
"All Might?" The man asked, trying to decipher what the boy meant.
"All Might." The five year old nodded. "He tries to make sure people are safe, I wasn't. He stood up during that huge amount of villains and made bad guys scared. But some good guys are actually the bad guys in disguise, like dad. I want to show people like dad what a real hero is, and make all the bad guys pretending to be good get exposed."
"So you want to make people notice the errors of the hero system and fix it?"
"Uh huh." The five year old nodded.
"That's a big goal." Kai stated as he thought about how difficult it would be, especially with Izuku being Quirkless. "I will help you do that regardless. I believe you can do it." Those words made the five year old smile widely.
The next day Kai did something he never thought he would do, but then again a lot of what he was doing recently was things he wouldn't ever do if he had the same mindset he had not just a week ago. He called a Pro Hero, and not one of the fake heroes as Izuku called them, he was calling Ryūko, hoping she would help him in a situation he didn't know what exactly to do with at first. Izuku wanted to go for being a hero to make change from the inside, but Kai being a Yakuza for so many years made him not really know the process. He only got the number because she thankfully left it the other day as a gesture of kindness.
"Hello?" Ryūko picked up the call.
"Hello Miss Tatsuma. It's me Kai Chisaki."
"Oh Hello Chisaki." Her voice got happier. "How is Izuku?"
"He is actually the reason I called. He wants to be a Pro Hero, and I think you know more about it than I do by bounds. Would it be too much to ask for help?"
"Not at all. I know a few programs that will take in young children."
Kai smiled. "Excellent."
"I can come over and help with the paper work if necessary."
"That is a nice offer. We could actually meet you somewhere if this is too far if a travel for you." He wasn't even questioning his sudden shift to being way nicer than he used to be.
"Okay. You guys are actually on the other side of Musutafu from me, do you know where the Cherry Waters are?"
"I do." He only did because he actually killed someone there just a few months back. "That is a good spot to meet up."
"That's great." Ryūko replied.
Izuku had never been to Cherry Waters before, which was evident when the boy was looking around the park with wide eyes.
"Why is it called Cheers Water?" Izuku asked Kai as they entered the central part of the park, which was by a decently sized pond that had a single cherry tree growing in the center of the water.
"It's Cherry Waters." Kai corrected. "It's called that for the Cherry tree right there." he pointed to the tree growing out of the water, it's trunk reaching down past view to the bottom of the water. "It's a tree that managed to survive drowning in the water and grow past it to let it's cherry blossoms get air. People actually believe it might be a quirked part of nature."
"Nature can get quirks?" Izuku asked, thinking it wasn't fair that a tree got one but he didn't.
"It isn't really known how the tree survived and grew healthy. No one wants to touch it and ruin it. It's actually considered an offense to go past the edge of the water here." Kai motioned to the water on the other side of the railing that circled the body of water. He never really stopped to appreciate this spot, it was nice and quiet.
"Wow." Izuku replied while looking at the tree again.
"Hello Mister Chisaki." Ryūko let them know she had arrived. "Hi Izuku."
"Hi Miss Tatsuma!" Izuku got happy to see the lady.
"Hello Tatsuma." Kai gave her a nod as they all went to go sit at a table, Izuku couldn't really focus on much with the paperwork since he was a little kid and they were known for shirt attention spans.
"So what are the different programs?" Kai asked as he looked at some of the papers Ryūko brought.
"Each actually leads to a recommendation slot at one of the four big schools of Japan. Izuku can't really apply for Seiai Academy since that's an all girls school." She moved that paper aside. "I kind of just grabbed every paper I could." She explained seeming slightly embarrassed by it.
"Thank you." Kai actually liked how much effort she put into this. It helped separate her from what he considered to be fake heroes. He looked at a paper and frowned. "Are quirks a requirement?"
"Not that I believe." Ryūko answered.
"Half of the prompts have to do with quirks." This would make Izuku's chances way slimmer because he didn't actually have a quirk.
"I'm sure whatever Izuku's quirk is they won't mind." Ryūko tried to reassure Kai.
"I'm... Quirkless." Izuku said quietly, thinking that Ryūko might be like her dad or Kacchan when it came to his Quirkless status.
"Oh." The blonde woman responded, understanding why Kai was as upset about the quirk prompts now. She also saw how Izuku lost his energy revealing his quirklessness, she knew what to say however. "Well it doesn't take quirks to be a hero." Izuku looked up at her with that. "If you want to be a Hero that's all it takes. Heart and will."
"Really?" Izuku asked with growing happiness.
"That's what I believe." Ryūko nodded.
Kai smiled. "Heart and will... that does make a good hero."
"But won't the schools pick the kids who have quirks to take the spots of the program?" Izuku asked.
"They would. But that doesn't mean you don't have what it takes to be a hero also." The woman thought for a second. "How about this? I can teach you."
"Really?" Izuku got excited.
"Wouldn't it bother your schedule?" Kai didn't want Izuku to miss an opportunity like this, but at the same time she was a Pro Hero and enforcer of the law, and Kai was a Yakuza member up until the day before and he had done a lot of things that would definitely out him in jail quicker than he could blink. Being around her might actually be dangerous for Kai, despite how much if a good thing it was for Izuku.
"It will actually be okay." The woman said happily. "Plus he has heart and that is the defining trait of Heroism." She noticed a slight bit of hesitation in Kai's eyes. "Is it fine with you? I'm sorry if this offer is too much, we did just meet two days ago."
"Can I do it?" Izuku looked at Kai with his big emerald green eyes, a look that worked in the boy's favor.
"It's fine." Kai was going to have to learn to look away from Izuku at times like this if that look was enough to make him agree.
"Yay!" Izuku got happy, which made both adults smile.
Four years later
A lot has changed for both Kai and Izuku over the past four years. Kai had become even more, domesticated as he would call it. He had gotten a research job on quirks, something that seemed outlandish to him and anyone who knew his beliefs more than a year prior, but he only did it for one reason and one reason only, to get Izuku a quirk. Not just any quirk however, but Kai's own Overhaul. He felt that if quirks were part of the brain functions of that person, and a script of DNA in everyone's blood, than quirks that are emitter types that cause no physical changes than theoretically it could be possible to find a way to transfer quirks like that from one person to another, or copy it entirely. That was a side project he worked on, mostly working on projects the lab he worked at gave him. It was fairly easy, especially when some of the projects he was given were to help people who had lost limbs grow them back, which with Overhaul was a five minute procedure. Local hospitals actually would request for Kai from time to time because news of his quirk in the medical field spread like wildfire in Musutafu and then half of Japan. He didn't mind it as much as he thought he would, gaining some enjoyment from it, especially with how much pride Izuku had for him. The boy still considered Kai to be one of the best heroes, even after learning that he was a feared member of the Yakuza before Izuku came along.
Ryūko had become a stronger presence in Izuku's life and Kai's as well, them seeing each other more than twice or three times a week when he would come check in Izuku's training. The woman was one of maybe five heroes Kai could think of that he had met that honestly deserved to be known as heroes. She had taught Izuku some advanced taijutsu, saying that he had a natural talent for hand to hand combat, even at his young age.
Izuku himself had changed drastically from the unsure boy left abandoned in the alley four years before. He had confidence in himself and the two adults he looked up to, Kai and Ryūko. He had cut his hair shorter to mimic Kai's style, and kept the signature outfit he had mimicked from Kai with some changes. His black dress shirt had changed to dark red, and he had taken to having dark green ties. His shoes went from black to a dark golden yellow. He had finally gotten a bomber jacket like Kai, making it dark green like his tie with a much thinner lining of dark red fur than Kai's own thick purple.
Izuku was currently in Kai's lab with him, looking at some papers the man had. Izuku had shown a lot of growth in his intelligence as well, taking after Kai in that regard. Shogi was something that Izuku actually managed to after a while challenge Kai at. It was something they would do on the daily to improve Izuku's skill.
"What's this?" Izuku looked at a binder labeled Project Overhaul.
"Oh that?" The golden eyed man looked up to see what binder Izuku had. "That's a side project of mine."
The nine year old boy opened the binder and read a section. "It's about Overhaul?"
"Yes. It's also about passing it on to you." The man said.
The boy looked up. "Really?"
"I believe you are deserving of a quirk Izuku. More so than most people. You actually understand what it means to look at people for them and not the quirk. I was going to try and surprise you with this when I was finished it."
"It's still a nice surprise." The boy smiled. "Can I help? I think I should earn this."
Kai already believed the boy had more than earned Overhaul when Kai could find a way for the boy to have it. However Izuku had gained a bit of Kai's stubbornness and he knew the boy might try to help either way. "Of course. However this shouldn't get in the way of your training with Ryūko."
"I promise."
"Or your school work. I don't want to see your grades drop."
"They won't."
"I know they won't." Kai grinned. Izuku to him was truly a genius and a prodigy of his generation. The boy was leagues above kids his age and despite his young age the boy was in good condition physically. He wasn't overly strong but was fit enough it put him above people his own age. The boy had perfect grades across the board and should be a person that all the high schools and prestigious schools of heroes should be working hard to get to go to their places. However they stopped with Izuku once they saw that he was Quirkless. That fact made Kai mad, the boy was more than just better than some kids his generation that would get spots in these programs, but those kids got picked for promising quirks and nothing else.
"How far did you get into the research?" The boy opened the binder to another page of notes.
"Not far. We can discuss it this weekend." Kai was serious about it being a weekend task. "Right now however we need to be getting you to training with Ryūko."
"Miss Tatsuma said she was going to start teaching me one of her three forms this week." Izuku responded as Kai began to put away some of his notes.
"Really? Which one?"
"The one she calls Breath of the Dragon. She says it is focusing on attacking areas that would limit the opponents breathing while staying on my own toes and it requires speed. Miss Tatsuma says I have more than enough speed for it."
"You are quite fast." Kai nodded, remembering one time he sparred with the boy and he managed to completely avoid Kai's touch. Granted Kai was holding his speed back but it was still impressive.
"She says if I master it fast I might get to learn her Fist of the Dragon form. That one targets limbs of the opponent. It's the one she used on you the one time you guys sparred."
"I remember that." Kai thought back to the spar, which only happened because Her normal sparring partner was out of town and Kai was there, which led to Izuku begging them both to spar. They hadn't used quirks and Ryūko definitely made it a fun challenge. Since then they would actually spar every once in a while because they both enjoyed it. "It is definitely a good style."
Later Kai was tapping a pen against his beak like plague doctor mask, in the middle of a dilemma. His Project Overhaul had hit a snag and he couldn't find a way around it. He had found a big difference between quirkless people and people with quirks. Their blood is different. Quirkless people actually had a missing layer to their blood that quirked people had, if you took out the part of the blood that held the coding of one's quirk. A quirkless person's blood could be defined in this sense as smooth, whereas people with quirks had blood that could be considered jagged, that extra layer almost like a puzzle piece, a really complex puzzle piece. That layer was unique to every quirk he had looked at so far, a few others at the lab were interested in this project. That layer itself wasn't the quirk but was the connecting piece to quirks. They saw it as a way to help identify quirks earlier on for children but Kai kept seeing it as the way he could give Overhaul to Izuku.
If he could learn how to make that layer that Izuku's blood was missing he could theoretically make it the one that connects Overhaul to blood for Overhaul and add both to Izuku's blood. However that had so many different variables that could be bad for Izuku. It didn't help that the extra layer to a quirked person's blood was almost as complex as the quirks themselves. Kai felt like he had barely scratched the surface of this study and he had been working on it since he joined the lab three years prior. To say this frustrated him would be a big understatement. He wanted Izuku to have Overhaul so bad. It would help the boy on his goal to change the status quo of the hero society for the better so well. Kai didn't believe that it would be easy as Izuku is now, a quirkless person in a society that practically worshipped quirks, which was something that still rubbed Kai wrong. He didn't despise quirks the same way he used to. He actually began to think they were nice puzzles to look at while working in the lab, but he would be a damned liar if he said that he liked how they were viewed by most people.
Kai exhaled slightly as he tapped his computer to awareness and turned on the browser. There were more experienced scientist in quirk research and perhaps one might be able to help Kai. After a bit of clicking around he found an article on a name he hadn't heard in a while, Maruta Shiga, the scientist turned mad villain that Ryūko actually had a hand in arresting just before he and Izuku met her. He got curious and looked at the article and then more on Maruta. The man was actually a leading figure early in his life on quirk research, right up until he started to become a twisted person and did his research with more... disturbing means. Torture and testing on people who definitely were not willing were just the tip of the iceberg with things that were revealed on this man when he was outed and the police and heroes put to act the raid that put him behind bars. He was actually put in a high security prison not that far away from Musutafu. It made Kai question whether he should see if this man, even if Kai found his methods disgusting and something he would never do, had any tips or helpful knowledge for Kai.
He looked it up and grabbed his office phone to call the warden of the prison.
Kai was later sitting in a conference room at the prison, able to get a interview with Maruta that day since the crazed man actually was interested in a scientist wanting to talk to him and it turned out the warden had a nephew that Kai had helped survive his cancer just a few months prior, by removing the cancer from his heart with Overhaul. The warden did it as a thank you to Kai, who was actually happy to know he had helped this person, and not just because he got this interview.
The crazed man known as Maruta Shiga was escorted into the room with no less than four guards watching him. It felt like overkill to Kai when he had found out that Maruta actually had no more access to his quirk, which made his fingers enlarge into bone like claws. He didn't have access because it turned out that Ryūko was one of the people who fought this man during the raid and he was insanely violent about his last stand, wounding several heroes before Ryūko used her claws from her dragon form to cut off his arms, as well as give him that jagged cut that lined the left side of his jaw and run down the man's neck on the left side. It actually surprised Kai to read that Ryūko got... vicious during the fight when others around her got hurt. She was always so gentle so reading that was shocking to him. The man had unkempt gray hair shooting everywhere on his head and was visibly blind in his left eye, the pupil and iris looking foggy. He had wooden prosthetic arms so he could do basic things like eat but the man was currently handcuffed, once he sat down he got handcuffed to the table as well as to the floor with his legs. The guard's took no chances at this prison and the man was one of the most dangerous prisoners they had, even if he didn't have his quirk and real hands.
The crazed scientist gave Kai a look of curiosity silently for a second, wondering why Kai had his plague doctor mask that covered the lower part of his face. "So... to what do I owe this pleasure."
"I am a researcher on quirks and despite your more... disturbing methods I was wondering what intelligence you might be able to offer to my project."
The man visibly lit up. "Finally someone appreciates my genius. What is this project about?"
"To put it simply my goal is to find a way to give my quirkless son my quirk." Kai rotated a paper on the table so Maruta could read it.
"Quirkless? Not going to happen." The villain didn't even bother to read the paper after he heard the word quirkless. "Evolution has passed him by."
"Explain." Kai narrowed his eyes.
"Do you know when quirks first began to appear?" The imprisoned man asked.
"Almost two hundred years ago."
"Wrong!" The man seemed excited to say that. "Quirks have actually been studied to appear way farther back. As far back as the middle ages during the plague. It's proven fact that the disease riddled rats gave us the plague, but that plague unearthed quirks, most people dying during the plague because they were not ready for that next step of Evolution." Kai didn't like how the man said the word evolution, like it was an idol or obsession of Maruta's. "After that quirks were always in our blood, but it didn't have that bridged layer that connected it to our blood and kept it going and powered on. Like a lamp, we all had that ability to light up but the cord to put it in an outlet was missing. World War Two, and the cold war, with all the nukes and radiation going off soon just that sliver of radiation necessary filled the air of the world, bridging the gap and making us evolve, finally ready for that step of Evolution. Quirkless people are just those who aren't worth of the next step of Evolution."
Kai grit his teeth at hearing this guy say indirectly that Izuku was worthless. He wanted so bad at that moment to just disassemble this man's face, but he wouldn't because that wouldn't be good for Izuku in the long run. "What is the point of this?"
"Your son can't get a quirk." Maruta said with the slightest bit of condescension. "Find something worthwhile to do with your quirk research."
Kai frowned. "Are you telling me that with all of the disgusting things you did there wasn't a single way to create that bridging layer in the blood?"
"Do not call my work disgusting." The villain glared at Kai.
"Answer my question."
"No."
"No you won't or no there isn't a way to make it?"
"I spent thirty years perfecting my craft. There is not a way that a god like me could find so some stuck up scientist like you won't find a way to make that." Maruta spat.
"If there isn't a way than I am done here with you." Kai stood up. "You and your work were pointless." He said that just to be petty. He walked with the warden out of the room.
"When I get out of here that dragon bitch is first and than I am coming for you!" Maruta shouted darkly. He never forgot the face of that dragon hero who was the main reason he lost all of his work. This random ass scientist trashing his work? He was definitely second on the list now. And he will get out and make sure everyone knows him as the reason humanity got to the next stage of Evolution.
Kai was lost in thought while driving back to the city. That trip was not helpful at all. He didn't learn anything that could further help him with his Project Overhaul. Perhaps he should just try that idea he had at first a few years ago. The man he was thinking of was definitely the worst villain imaginable. Also a myth but Kai was willing to go to myths for help on this. Even if it was a myth apparently there were rumors that this guy apparently had gained respect for Kai during Kai's time in the Yakuza. The rumors of what he did with Overhaul to increase his groups standing were something of a legend to other criminals, a man with the ability to touch you and instantaneously disassemble you to your bare cells and effectively kill you, and a second later remove evidence that would incriminate himself with another touch was something above note worthy. Luckily Kai was never visibly seen in a way that would expose his identity, which was especially good after he dropped from the Yakuza to raise Izuku. It was a very small chance he had to find this person but he actually knew one name he could call in hopes of finding this person. Giran, a handler of villainous and criminal people's and gear. A man who would most likely have info for Kai on where the man he actually wanted to meet was at.
Kai still had that man Giran's number, they had crossed paths one time, when Kai was masked, due to Giran selling the Yakuza a set of gear at one point. He dialed the number and it picked up after two rings.
"This is Okuta." The man answered his phone they way he would for anyone, cop, criminal or random call. Kai would have to actually make it clear he was calling for seedy business.
"It is Overhaul."
"Overhaul? That's weird since I heard he stepped out of the business." Giran had disbelief that this was the Overhaul. No way would he believe that the real Overhaul would suddenly return just like that.
"You have a missing front tooth." Kai stated.
"Anybody who has seen me can tell you that."
"I told you that if you touched me I would blow your arm off with a touch and to get your disgusting smoke away from me."
"I'll be damned. It's been quite some time since we met like that but I wouldn't lie when it was definitely memorable." Giran accepted this as the real Overhaul, no one else was there when these two met and had that altercation. "How might my business be of service to you?"
"Do you have contact with the man that is referred to as All For One?" Kai had never associated himself with villains on levels of, well villains, but All For One was what could be classified as Super Villain as an understatement.
"I cannot divulge information on who is in my clientele."
"I want to make a deal with him and this is the only way I know to contact him."
There was a pause for a second. "Let me call you back in a minute."
"Take your time." Kai said as he heard the call end. He looked to see his gas was getting down there in level and a gas station was just a few seconds away. He decided to get gas while waiting, for all he knew he would have to drive away to a meeting spot if All For One did in fact want to meet. This also all confirmed to him that All For One was indeed a real person. He didn't know if that should make him worry at all, a shadowy figure controlling Japan from the darkness that could just remove and steal quirks away from people as he felt was definitely something that would bother most people. This meeting actually could go completely bad for Kai and the man could kill him and keep Overhaul for himself. Was Kai too quick to do this? He was mulling that thought over when he got a call from the untitled number he knew was Giran.
"How is it?" Kai asked.
"He is very interested. Can you meet him now?"
"Yes." Kai had a gut feeling telling him to stay on his toes if he would really be doing this.
"That's good news. I'll send you the address." Giran hung up the call.
Kai felt his nerves work up for the first time in a while, wondering if he was really making a good call here.
Kai drove into Musutafu and towards the factory distract. He had called Ryūko asking her to watch over Izuku for the next few hours and she thankfully was more than happy to do it.
Kai drove into a side parking lot and looked around, supposedly he was told that the parking lot would be where All For One would meet him but Kai felt like it was more of All For One checking if Kai was alone before they met. He parked the car and turned it off before he got out of the vehicle.
He was just closing the door when something blurred towards him in his peripheral vision. Kai acted fast and used Overhaul to manipulate the car to shift and block a knife that would have hit his face. The trajectory wouldn't have killed him but it definitely would have cut him. He looked past the car to see a person who had neon green hair and a black outfit that had multiple knives all over it.
"You must be Overhaul." The woman responded. "Follow me."
Kai exhaled softly. It was a test to make him use his quirk and prove for sure he was who he said he was. At least he knew he could react faster than a knife was thrown at him still. He made his car revert back to its normal state before following the woman, glad he kept his plague mask on.
He followed the woman as they walked into a building, going up the stairs inside and farther up the building.
"Speak with respect when you are here." The woman said suddenly and coldly. "Master has more than shown that respect is necessary for him."
"I will remember that." Kai responded. Truth was he was already planning on treading as carefully as he could. He didn't want to screw this up and leave Izuku without a proper father figure. That thought made him go back to thinking if this was even a good call in the first place. This was slowly feeling less and less like a good idea.
They eventually got to a set of double doors and the woman stopped before turning around. "Only you." She said before walking away.
Kai nodded before he opened the door and walked into an office. It definitely have off what could be described as a sinister vibe despite it looking look a basic office that had a window that overlooked a good portion of Musutafu.
In the seat of a desk facing Kai was All For One, a definitely imposing man despite his almost average appearance. He had short white hair, dark eyes that Kai felt were staring directly into his soul, and sharp cheek bones. The man had a simple black dress suit. He had his elbows on the desk and his chin resting on his hands. He waiting for Kai to sit down before he spoke.
"So you are Overhaul?" The villain asked with his voice that dropped with evil.
"I am Overhaul."
"It was surprising to get a call that you wanted to meet me for a deal." His voice set off something in Kai, like a warning that this man was something to be cautious of. "I actually thought you were arrested, killed or disappeared into the wind. A man of your talents just disappearing like that was odd. Then again I have heard about a lab that had a miracle working newcomer who put the best of doctors to shame with his quirk. A quirk that allowed him to just... touch a person and manipulate diseases and injuries away like they never existed. A man who made limbs regrew where they were lost. A quirk so close to godliness that sounded eerily close to the Yakuza Overhaul, who destroyed everything in his path to restore the strength of his group."
"How do you know this?" Kai got worried that maybe he was careless during his time these last four years.
"Overhaul... Kai Chisaki. I know everything in Japan. You can't sneeze without me learning of it." The man stated. Part of Kai knew this man was definitely trying to make himself more of an intimidating figure, but damn if it wasn't working on a level. "What I don't know yet however is what you, a man who had changed from a strong villain, to a miracle doctor, would want from me. It was a question I have had for the past hour since you had asked for my attention earlier today. However I have an idea... Is it Izuku?" Kai's skin crawled when that man said Izuku's name. "He is a unique kid isn't he? A child who just appeared one day in your life, made you question everything that made you... Overhaul, and as almost as soon as he is there in your life he becomes what your life is about. You even leave the Yakuza for this boy, just to give him what you think would be the best life that you could possibly give him." Kai was calm on the outside but it was knotting his stomach to talk not just about Kai's life like this, but to talk about Izuku like it was something he was educated on extensively. It was something that made Kai suddenly afraid for Izuku.
"He truly is special... a quirkless boy who shows intelligence and wisdom far surpassing some of the greatest minds at just the age of nine. A student of an up and coming heroine in Ryūkyū, or do you prefer Ryūko? This boy is nothing short of a once in a generation prodigy... it must anger you that despite how much promise and potential he has, he will always be held at a lower level by most people just because he has no quirk. A kid who can extend a single finger and make it glow is seen as better just because he has a quirk. If I saw this boy as my own blood like you I have no doubt I would also be furious, willing to do anything I could to make people see him for what he is, from Project Overhaul to digging up contacts from a past life to talk to someone regarded as a myth... me, a man who can take a quirk from one person, and give it to another person. Willing to make a deal with someone regarded as the Symbol of Evil, hoping he would give the boy with so much potential can get a quirk... and prove to his real father he isn't worthless, and to fix the hero system he believes is corrupt... but not just any quirk... Overhaul, the quirk that makes the world putty in your hands." The man paused for a second. "Am I correct?"
"Yes. I want you to give Izuku my quirk." Kai said.
"This is something that is an interesting situation to me." The man admitted. "A man I learned hated hero society and quirks, a real sociopath that could have put me to shame with time, went soft and raised a child to be a hero, and wants the boy to have a quirk? This is definitely something that is a sight to see. I will give it to the boy on a few conditions. He wants to change hero society and fix the corruption, so does my own prodigy. Your son will join and work under my prodigy as he goes about his path to fixing society. If he does not fulfill that condition I will take Overhaul for myself."
"Why would I say yes to that?" Kai asked. He wouldn't agree to this. The man knew so much that he had to know Izuku wouldn't cross into full villainy like this. He must have been trying to throw Kai off and make him agree to a deal that would inevitably give All For One full reign of Overhaul. Which was a little ridiculous when it can be remembered that All For One can take quirks.
"They both have similar goals do they not? Both being treated poorly at first because of their quirk status and cast aside to the trash, but a man finds them and helps them, seeing them as a child of pure potential with a true cause. Surely he would agree to that."
"Izuku is not like that."
"Ah yes. You only choose to see the hope in him, oblivious of his true resentment of society. Sure you know he doesn't like how things go but you don't acknowledge that growing hatred in him. The jealousy and hate of other kids his age getting attention by the world around them because of quirks, despite his immense intelligence and such that should make him the one everyone notices. It is there in the boy, and it will only grow worse until he gets to unleash it. Wouldn't it be wise to let him use that resentment with my prodigy to reshape society for the better?"
"This isn't what he believes to be better." Kai wouldn't let this man shake his belief in Izuku. The man was clearly trying to make himself appear all knowing to make his seem absolute.
The man sighed. "Father's really do sometimes ignore the negatives of their children." He stood up and Kai's instincts were screaming at him to move away. "I guess I can just take Overhaul for my pupil." The man was over the desk in a second with a hand reaching out for Kai's head.
Kai reacted just in time to dodge away, grabbing the floor as he rolled to create a wall in between the two.
"Kai do not insult me like this." The man punched a large hole in the makeshift wall.
Kai wished he had a future sight quirk so he could have seen how big of a mistake this was. He didn't know how he was going to get out of this horrible situation he had gotten himself into. Why couldn't he realize earlier on that of course the evil dude who can take quirks will end up deciding to take a powerful quirk like Overhaul for himself. What was worse that now he knew that even if he got out of this situation here the threat of this man coming for him.
As if God himself was intervening in Kai's favor a blue and yellow blur smashed in through the window, revealing another massive man that was actually the number one hero in Japan. It was All Might, who might not have been smiling like he normally was it was a good thing for Kai that the scowl that replaced it was aimed at All For One.
"All For One!" The Pro Hero spat.
"Ah if it isn't All Might." All For One forgot about Kai for a second. "Finally done crying over your precious mentor?"
All Might's scowl got bigger. "I'm putting you down once and for all!"
"Not if I and my associate have anything too say about that." All For One indicated to Kai, who had gained the attention of All Might with that.
This was a huge moment in Kai's life. One that would have drastic effects on the entire course of history all dependent on the simple reaction he gave to All For One's statement.
"You want to corrupt my son!" Kai spat. "I would never side with you!"
All Might dropped the glare he had for the man, realizing this person would be on his side and not against him. That was a big weight off of his goal of crushing All For One. Especially since as far as he knew this man might have a powerful quirk himself.
"All Might I'm with you!" Kai had found a way to at the least remove this massive threat to him and Izuku, defeat All For One with All Might.
"Is that so?" All Might asked. "Wonderful!"
All For One gave Kai a scowl. "You'll regret that."
"He wants my quirk." Kai announced as he stepped farther away from All For One.
"I suggest staying back if it can be helped." All Might charged All For One, the two clashed strikes.
"Got it." Kai took being part in what could be considered a huge battle rather well. He ran his hand along the wall and shot spikes out of the wall behind All For One to impale his back. The man had reacted fast enough to get out of harm's way, the spikes stopping before they would have hit All Might. Kai kept making spikes jut out trying to hit the villain, but he was too fast. All Might began to match All For One in speed and the two were close to blues for Kai, him deciding to stop his spikes so he wouldn't accidentally stab the hero.
All Might and All For One kept trading blows, each strike being countered and sending a shockwave around the building. Kai was amazed at how powerful the two were. The fight began to take a bad turn when All For One had his fingers turn into black tendrils with red cracked, jagged, spikes shooting out, all going for All Might.
Kai grabbed the floor and made the floor in front of All Might expand into a wall that blocked the spikes.
All Might wiped his brow. "Thank you for the breather."
"I should take away that quirk of yours." All For One stated as he destroyed the blockade and leapt at Kai again, but All Might intercepted him.
"Explain your quirk please." All Might asked Kai as he grappled All For One again.
"I can manipulate anything I touch." Kai responded quickly.
"I wish I could rip away One For All from you." All For One glared at All Might as his arm suddenly enlarged to twice his body's size and released a punch that sent All Might through the wall.
Wait. All For One couldn't take All Might's quirk? Why was All Might's quirk named the inverse of All For One? If One For All couldn't be taken then could Kai use that to find a way to make a unremovable version of Overhaul for Izuku. He shouldn't really have that as the most pressing issue at the moment when All For One turned his focus back to Kai.
Kai had to think quickly of what to do. He could just dissemble All For One with a simple touch but All For One was superior to Kai in speed and had strength that could destroy Kai easily. Plus he didn't know exactly how All For One takes quirks but it seemed like All For One had to be close so Kai should keep his distance.
"I'll be taking Overhaul now." All For One shot in front of Kai and was about to slam his fist down on Kai but thankfully Kai still hand his hand on the floor. He manipulated the floor and made it shoot up in a spike that was meant for All For One's face but the man's fist and arm blocked it, the spike impaling the fist and split his forearm in half as All For One's momentum made his arm go farther down the spike. All For One cursed in pain as he pulled his ripped apart arm away. "Damn you!"
All Might reappeared in the room and struck All For One's back while he was reeling from the pain of Kai's attack. The villain got sent towards the window that All Might had entered from. "Overhaul? As in the criminal from years ago?" He looked at Kai. Overhaul was a villain that no one could find out anything about and law enforcement and heroes were glad he just fell of the face of the Earth years back. Was this the same villain for real?
"I changed." Kai defended himself before All Might turned on him.
"And yet you were found here talking to me." All For One stated, planning in distracting All Might by making him turn on Kai.
"Where does your allegiance lie Overhaul?" All Might asked as he kept his eye on All For One.
"Against All For One."
"So you would put your own stubborn beliefs over Izuku's future."
"Don't act like you care about Izuku." Kai scowled. "You won't get in my head anymore."
"Who is Izuku?" All Might got confused.
"A young boy this man had captured-"
"That is a damned lie!" Kai wouldn't let this villain use a lie about Izuku like that. "I found him abandoned and gave him a home."
All Might now understood partially why Overhaul must have disappeared, he found a child and must have choose to care for the boy over his own criminal lifestyle. "Your manipulation won't work here anymore All For One." All Might charged the villain again.
"Ah yes. The stubborn willpower I remember from Nana." All For One said as he and All Might clashed.
"Do not speak her name!"
"She was stubborn until the end, holding onto that poor idealism of hers." All For One sent a blast of powerful air at Kai that sent him into a wall and stunned him.
"SHUT UP!" All Might made an error as his anger made his make a sloppy strike, which gave All For One the perfect window to use multiple quirks at once. All For One's left arm enlarged with bulging muscle as well as gaining large chunks of metal work and he slammed his super powered fist into All Might's side, the impact and force actually blowing apart the Pro Hero's side and splattering the walls and floor with All Might's blood and innards.
"You were always so naive." All For One laughed as he looked at the man who would die in a matter of minutes from that strike alone. He took his time catching his breath to rub his sure victory in All Might's face.
Suddenly a spike came out of the floor and pierced All For One in the abdomen. Kai had recovered and manipulated the floor to make the spike that now made a large hole in the evil man's midsection.. "All Might don't let your hate get the better of you!"
All Might snapped out of his anger, the blow that tore his side wide open and the words of Kai made him realize how he had almost failed his goal completely because he let All For One get in his head. He summoned his will and stood up, putting as much strength as he can into one more punch that he sent right to All For One's face, the blow shaking the building and sending All For One through the wall and into the parking lot below. All Might fell to his knees, the pain from his wound sapping his strength.
Kai rushed over to All Might, ignoring the blood flowing from his own head. "All Might don't worry."
"My side is gone." The man coughed. "I think worrying is the right thing to do."
"My quirk let's me manipulate people down to their cells too." Kai stated as he out his hand on All Might, manipulating the man completely to replace the wounded side. After not even two seconds it looked like All Might hadn't even gotten hit there save for the missing part of his suit.
All Might looked from his side to the ex-villain in awe. Such a quirk was indeed powerful and it was good that Kai had decided to side with him and not All For One. "Thank you Overhaul."
"It's Kai Chisaki." The Overhaul user's gut was telling him he didn't have to worry about All Might turning on him. "What about All For One?" He then actually used Overhaul on himself to patch up the wound on his head.
"If the man had somehow survived that blow he shouldn't be up for more fighting." All Might stood up and went to the broken wall overlooking the parking lot.
"His followers?" Kai got his answer before All Might spoke when he realized he could actually hear the sounds of police sirens. A raid had happened just moments after Kai came here. What were the chances of that? Kai had to consider himself lucky for this outcome however as he got away from All For One before the man could steal Overhaul from him and leave him to be arrested by the police.
"They should all be getting arrested at this very moment." All Might frowned when he couldn't spot All For One in the parking lot. He could see a crater covered with blood but he couldn't see the evil man anywhere. He must have been dragged away by one of his subordinates that wasn't arrested. the man had to be dead. A blow of that strength would kill anyone. Right? He shook that negative thought and turned to Kai. He wondered about the man who was revealed to be a massive underground criminal years prior. Was this man truly turned around? He had to be if he would willingly heal a hero who could arrest him and work against a villain who had something he wanted. "Stay with me when the other heroes sweep the building. That way they don't go after you."
"So I am not getting arrested?" Kai asked.
"You had a part in putting down the biggest evil to ever corrupt Japan, and saved me from a wound that surely would have been my end."
"You know I am Overhaul."
"Overhaul hasn't done anything in a long time. He disappeared." All Might patted Kai's shoulder. "He is gone and in his place is Kai Chisaki. I actually have heard of you being an excellent doctor as of late. I don't know what for sure caused your change to good but you are clearly working on redemption and I can't just ignore that. However I want an explanation of why you are here."
"It's my son." Kai began to explain, telling the truth.
Once Kai finished explaining why he was meeting with All For One there was silence for a moment.
All Might didn't have children of his own, but he did understand how much Izuku meant to Kai and why he would even do this. He was glad that Kai had stated he was aware of how poor of a choice it was to even contact All For One. "This boy of yours sounds like he is a good kid."
"He is." Kai agreed. The Overhaul user had to follow All Might when the man returned to another Pro Hero who reported that the entire complex had been swept and every villain was in custody.
"You should become a real hero." All Might said. "It would help redeem you more."
"I believe getting Izuku Overhaul will be the best way to redeem myself."
"Passing quirks on like this is a impossible thing. This is certainly a challenge."
"How come he said he couldn't steal One fo-"
All Might cut off the man in a low tone. "I would much rather keep my quirk as much of a secret as possible... I can explain it to you as a returning favor of you saving me but later."
"My lab?" Kai offered. "It's the research lab close to Cherry Waters."
The Pro Hero nodded. "That is acceptable. I will be there as soon as this is all finished here. You are free to go now."
A little while later All Might had appeared at the lab.
"My quirk isn't something that is common knowledge." All Might figured to just outright explain it. Kai had saved his life and clearly sided with him against All For One, it had made him someone trustworthy in All Might's eyes. "It is called One For All, and I can guess you see it's similar name to All For One. It was made when that man tried to force his brother to take a power stockpiling quirk, the brother already had that they were both unaware of, a Quirk with no other power than that it could be transferred to another person. The transference Quirk and the power stockpiling Quirk merged into the one quirk that actually can't be stolen by All For One. It can't be forcibly taken and can only be passed on if the holder of the quirk decides willingly to pass it on."
"Can I have a sample of your blood?" Kai asked abruptly.
"What?" All Might gave a look of confusion.
"I am not trying to trick you into passing it on to me. I just want to see the coding of this transference quirk."
"You believe you might be able to duplicate it?"
"A transference quirk is something I haven't heard of. It's essentially the easiest coding I should be able to do out of all of my options and if I find a way to duplicate it and make it fuse with Overhaul I can pass Overhaul on to Izuku."
All Might nodded. He noticed how much Kai cared for Izuku and that was his deciding factor. "I will give you a sample of my blood and extra funding for this project if you need it."
"Thank you." Kai replied happily.
Three weeks later
Three weeks. Three weeks of cracking down hard and so many hours of focus and he had done it. He had perfectly copied the exact DNA coding that made the transference quirk. He had to make a few tweaks so it would mesh with his blood and soon he had it. All he had to do was inject the pure serum that would add the synthetic quirk to his bloodstream and have Recovery Girl, who all Might had asked to join this project given her massive amount of medical knowledge, operate a machine to make sure that the two quirks do in fact fuse into one. Kai would use Overhaul once the transference quirk was in his system to manipulate it as best he could into his blood and make it connect to Overhaul and fuse. The procedure was definitely a risk to Kai's health but he didn't really care about that as much. he checked the variables and success was the only outcome he saw.
"Are you ready dearie?" the aged woman that was Recovery Girl asked.
"I am." the man nodded.
"Okay let's get going." The woman handed Kai the syringe with the synthetic quirk and turned to the monitor to watch Kai's vitals.
Kai paused just a second before the injection. He thought about how much has changed in the last four years. His was about to inject a serum made from scratch of a secret quirk to fuse it with his own and pass his quirk to pass on to a, as of that day, ten year old. This was definitely an odd situation to the man. However he accepted it and injected the serum into his arm.
Soon the whole procedure was done. the transference quirk had been added and as all of the tests showed it was one with Overhaul. He was happy it was such a success.
"So it is a success?" All Might asked from his spot at a table.
"It was. All tests show that I only have one quirk, not exactly Overhaul but Overhaul that I can pass on."
"Are you sure it can be passed on?" the Pro Hero asked. "One For All us a unique quirk."
"If you say that the transfer of One For All works based on the passing of the quirk willingly through DNA consumption, then the only way for it to happen and us know it was a success in that regard is for me to try to pass it one to Izuku."
"It might be a gradual transition of the quirk like One For All, but since Overhaul isn't an accumulation quirk like One For All he might get it instantly."
"He is actually coming here right now, he just finished a training session with his sensei."
"He has a sensei?" All Might asked in surprise. "Is he in one of the early programs?"
"He never got accepted because of him being Quirkless."
"That is a waste of potential on their part." All Might didn't like that a kid who had potential was ignored just because of one factor of his birth.
"With Overhaul he will be able to show his potential even more."
A little bit later Izuku showed up at the lab with Ryūko.
"Hi dad!" Izuku said happily as he entered, before he saw the massive hero that was All Might. "AlL MiGhT!?"
"Hello!" All Might said happily as he greeted the boy.
"All Might?" Ryūko raised an eyebrow.
"Hello Miss Ryūkyū!" All Might said. "It is nice to see an up and coming hero like you!"
Ryūko turned red from the praise. "I'm honored but I don't think I can hold a candle to you."
"Nonsense!" All Might laughed. "You are quite a capable young lass! I won't be surprised if one day you make it as the Number One Hero!" All Might truly believed that. Ryūko was a more than capable hero who was nice and kind to everyone, as well as humble.
"Why are you here Mister All Might?" Izuku asked.
"I actually was a helper on Project Overhaul." All Might answered. "I met your father and he talked you up quite a bit so I offered my assistance."
"Wow." The ten year responded.
Kai was glad Izuku didn't pursue how he met All Might, because Kai wasn't planning on ever bringing up the fact that he tried to talk to the biggest supervillain. "Izuku. Do you want Overhaul?" The golden eyed man asked.
"Wait you found a way to transfer it?" Ryūko asked. She had found out a month after knowing the man what Kai's quirk was, she wondered for a while why he never became a hero or anything with a quirk like Overhaul, not aware of the truth of his time as a Yakuza. She never connected the rumors of a evil Yakuza with killed with a touch to the man she considered a close friend who was a caring adoptive father who had a healing touch.
"I can get Overhaul?" Izuku got excited.
"If our tests and experiment were a success then yes."
"Awesome!" The boy had his bubbly energy that Kai and Ryūko both adored, the same energy that just made All Might melt as well. He had to admit the boy was as charming as Kai made him out to be. "What do I do!?"
"If we are correct it is given through DNA. A drop of blood should be all it takes."
"It is also theorized that the transfer will make Overhaul in its entirety move to you Young Chisaki." All Might said.
Izuku's happiness disappeared. "What?" He looked at his father figure. "You'll lose Overhaul?"
"It is most likely." Kai nodded.
"I can't take it." The boy said adamantly. "It's your quirk and you'll lose what makes you you!"
"Izuku." Kai knelt in front of the boy with a hand on his shoulder so he could be eye level with him. "My quirk doesn't make me Kai Chisaki. Your quirklessness doesn't make you Izuku Chisaki. It's this." He poked the boy where his heart was. "That makes you Izuku. My heart makes me Kai. My heart says that you will do so much greater things with Overhaul than I did. It will be a loss but a loss I am fine with. I said you had a spark, and I firmly believe that with Overhaul you can show how it is not just a spark but actually a star, bigger than the sun, of potential." At this point Izuku was crying out of happiness at Kai's praise of him. The boy grabbed his father figure in a hug, making the man smile.
"I'll take it." Izuku said firmly, regaining his want of Overhaul with renewed vigor. "I promise I will make you proud!"
"You already did." Kai smiled and patted Izuku's head as he grabbed a scalpel from the table next to him. "It's just one drop I believe." He pricked his finger and passed the scalpel to Izuku to let him do the same. Once the boy cut his finger and placed the scalpel back on the table they both nodded and pressed the cuts together. Kai wishing badly for Izuku to get Overhaul from this.
The room was silent for a minute while the two stood there, pulling their fingers away after a moment, no one saying anything.
Ryūko was the one to break the silence. "Did it work?"
Almost as soon as she said that a sound like thunder happened and Izuku's skin visibly glowed for a second and his hair stood on end, before everything went back to normal, almost. Kai saw a gold colored outline appear in Izuku's eyes that circled his pupils.
"Izuku... change the table." Kai asked.
The boy touched the table and tried to bend it and everyone was surprised to see the table change from a rectangular shape to more of a circular shape. Izuku lit up. "I have Overhaul!"
Kai smiled for Izuku as he placed his own hand on the table to see if he could change it back, not getting any results. He didn't feel that power or control in his mind and hands anymore. Overhaul was now completely Izuku's and Kai didn't have a trace, but he didn't care, believing it to now be in the best possible hands.
All For One breathed hard through the machines that were keeping him alive. He was now confined to these machines for the foreseeable future just to keep living. He was beyond pissed at that moment, feeling hatred for the two men that were the cause of his current situation. He was the most powerful man in Japan, it was an insult to his pride that he got defeated in such a way by a emotional idiot with strong punches and a Yakuza gone soft. He would bide his time, waiting in the shadows while he healed, but once he was on his feet he will get even with them both. Not just even, he will crush both of them and make their corpses examples to everyone who would even dare to think to oppose him.
A/N: That's the end of chapter one. I honestly wanted to end it right before the four year time skip but I also wanted to end the first chapter with Izuku having Overhaul.
Maruta Shiga is actually supposed to be the exact same guy he is in my story Clear Blooded, but obviously he never gets his golden egg, in this story since Izuku didn't get clear blood in this fic. I dead ass wrote him here because I feel like I didn't use him as much with Clear Blooded, and wanna use him more because he intrigues me.
To be honest, and this is a decently sized spoiler alert so skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want the surprise killed when it comes to this certain piece if info for the story if you don't want to know. Spoiler alert I don't plan on giving One For All to Izuku. That should go to Mirio here honestly or one of the other characters that when U.A. comes along will be part of that main group.
I hope everyone likes the family set up I gave Izuku. I feel a little bad about writing Inko out of the story but I felt like if she was alive then Kai would have given Izuku to her and this story wouldn't have happened. Hisashi will get what he deserves eventually don't worry on that. To explain Ryūko and Kai's age difference here since they are a different age from the actual anime. When Izuku was 5 Ryūko was 22 and Kai was 24. When Izuku is ten they are 27 and 29 respectively.
The pairing of this story is actually already decided but I won't reveal it at first because mystery is neat. Plus upon meeting her in this story it is kinda obvious that that's the pairing.
I have a Discord server for this story and my others if anyone is interested in that. We discuss my stories among other things there. The link is in my bio.
I hope everyone enjoys this new story of mine, let me know how it is and have a good day!
