Chapter 4- Stick to the Status Quo
"You totally have the hots for Elijah" says Caroline.
"No I don't" I say.
"Just admit it, Kat" says Bonnie.
"Okay, he's a little pretty" I say.
"He has that romance novel stare. Elijah looked deep into her eyes piercing her very soul" says Bonnie.
"Okay, can we stop discussing this? There's cheer tryouts today and I don't want to mess up" I reply.
"Look, you've been distant lately, not letting anyone in except for Bonnie, Jenna, Jeremy, and I. I think it's because you're scared, you're scared that if you let him in, you'll lose him" says Caroline.
"Look, this just, can we please stop talking about this?" I ask, sincerely.
"Don't worry. Caroline's the captain. I'm sure she'll let you in" says Bonnie, changing the subject.
"Hey, that is, okay fine that's true. Let's just continue. Let's start from the top. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. You got it?" asks Caroline. Suddenly, the bell rang.
"Yeah, I think I do, thanks. Come on let's head to spanish" I say. After spanish and geometry I head to the locker room and change. I take my bra off and toss it into my bag.
"Well, hello darling. I thought I smelled you in here" says a man behind me. I turn around.
"Oh my god. Kol, have you ever heard of privacy? What are you even doing here?" I ask, taking my jacket and covering myself up.
"Well, I wanted to check out this school if we're gonna stay here. I mean Rebekah and I are technically "teenagers" he puts his hand near his mouth and whispers.
"Might I say, though you have some nice..." he pauses, holding up his hands making boob-like shapes.
"Kol get out of here" I say, shooing him away.
"Well, I'm trying out for the football team. I thought you might direct me to the men's locker room" he says.
"You, what are you gonna play, QB?" I question.
"Actually, I'm going for wide receiver" he replies.
"Well, where's Rebekah?" I ask.
"Well, she's trying out for the cheer team" replied Kol.
"Well, where's..." I ask.
"Elijah. I thought you might ask that. I see you've fallen under my brother's charms" interrupts Kol, smiling wickedly.
"I haven't fallen under his charms. We're just friends" I say.
"Well, that's great to here because I don't think he's gotten over the last one. Nearly destroyed him" he replies.
"The last one?" I question.
"Yeah Tatia, his girlfriend" replies Kol. I give him a confused look.
"Oh, you two haven't had the weird exes conversation yet" says Kol, awkwardly.
"Nope" I say.
"Oops. Well, I'm sure it'll come up now. Or maybe he didn't want to tell you because he didn't want you to think he was on the rebound. We all know how those relationships end" he says.
"You say it like every relationship is doomed to end" I say.
"Well, I'm a fatalist darling" replies Kol.
"Well, we're just friends. Now go find the locker room by yourself" I say.
"Well, I'll see you later, Kitty Kat" he says, walking away.
"Did you just call me Kitty Kat?" I ask.
"Yes, do you have a problem with that?" he asks.
"No, I'll just need to come up with a name for you" I say. I finish changing. Then, I head outside and see Rebekah and Caroline fighting and decide to head over to Bonnie.
"Bonnie what's going on?" I ask.
"Well, Rebekah and Caroline are fighting over who should be captain. Where were you?" asks Bonnie.
"Well, I just ran into Kol. He saw my boobs" I say.
"Oh my god" she says, laughing.
"This is not funny" I say. She gives me a look and I start laughing.
"Okay, it's a little funny" I say. During cheer tryouts Rebekah tells us that her brothers purchased a new house. So after tryouts, Rebekah drives us there with her new, red car.
"Oh, no. I'm not going in there" says Caroline.
"What's the matter Carebear?" asks Rebekah.
"This is the Old Salvatore Boarding House" answers Bonnie.
"I'm not seeing the connection here" says Rebekah.
"Caroline used to live here with her mom before the accident" I say.
"Oh, now I see. Well I'm just gonna go" says Rebekah, walking away. I jump up as I here Rebekah pound on the door.
"Let me in, Elijah!" yells Rebekah. The door opens to reveal a solemn looking Elijah.
"Rebekah, sister. How lovely of you to grace us of your presence. We've been waiting for you to arrive back from school. You can come in" says Elijah, looking outside. Rebekah walks in and plops down on the couch. "Katerina, Miss Gilbert, Miss Salvatore" he calls.
"Oh um, Bonnie can you go in? I'm gonna stay with Caroline. Make sure she's okay" I say with pleading eyes. Bonnie gives me a wink as she walks inside.
When it's over, we walk back to my house.
"He didn't call, huh?" asks Bonnie.
"Or text" I say.
"That's an important milestone in any relationship" she says.
"Isn't it? "The timing is wrong, anyway" I say.
"When is it ever right?" I give a questioning look to her. "What, I needed something to take my mind off it" says Caroline, shrugging.
"I'm not ready, okay" I say.
"Who is? All I'm hearing is reasons why you can't" says Bonnie.
"So, what did they say?" I ask, changing the topic.
"Well, they said they're staying in Mystic Falls. Kol and Rebekah are going to be going to school with us. Oh and Kol wanted me to tell you that he says hi. He was imitating and making boob shapes. He was telling me I had a nice ass and when I turned around I saw him looking at it" says Bonnie.
"Oh, Kol is insufferable" I say.
"We need to figure out who daggered us" says Kol.
"We're only staying here as long as we need to. People here still remember the animal attacks. We don't need them to know that we've come back" says Elijah.
"So to blend in we're going to school, while you do what?" questions Rebekah.
"Well, we need to find out if the Council is still happening and who's on vervain. I'm sure all the parents of the Founding Families will be there tonight" says Klaus. He claps his hands. "Now, don't you guys have a game to get ready for tonight?" he smiles mischievously.
Drums were playing, the fire was blazing, people were cheering, and the voices of cheering were heard.
"Quiet down, quiet down. Quiet down a little bit. Ok? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Now let's be honest here. In the past, we used to let other teams come into our town and roll right over us!" said Mr. Tanner. Then, everybody started "booing". "But that is about to change. We've got some great new talent tonight starting on offensive. And I'm gonna tell you right now, it has been a long time since I have seen a kid like this with hands like these. Let's give it up for Kol Mikaelson" I stick my tongue out at Kol and make "booing" sounds at him, while the crowd goes wild.
He puts his hand up to his mouth, "Oh, darling. I know you secretly love me." I make strangling motions at him and he makes heart signs back at me.
I mouth back, "You're such an ass."
"You do have a nice ass" he mouths back.
"You little..." I say. Tyler walks behind the crowd to his girlfriend Vicki.
"Is that Jeremy? he asks.
"Wait, no! Ty! No. Leave him alone" says Vicki.
"Oh, what do you care? Don't look so down. You can have her when I'm done" says Tyler. All of a sudden, Jeremy punches Tyler. Tyler grabs Jeremy and pushes him up against a car.
"Tyler, stop it! Tyler! Stop, you're hurting him! Tyler! Tyler, stop!" says Vicki. They went flying back and forth on the ground, rolling each other.
"Hey, he's down! Enough!" intervenes Elijah. Tyler gets up and punches him. I run to where he is and see Jeremy pick up a piece of glass.
"Jeremy, no!" I yell. He swings it and it hits Elijah's hand.
"Hey, Tyler! Knock it off!" says Matt, pushing him away.
"What the heck, Jeremy?" I ask, running over to him. "Put your head up, you're bleeding" I say, placing my hand on his chin and putting it up.
"I'm fine!" he says.
"Yeah. You smell fine!" I shout back.
"Just stop, ok?" he says, walking away.
"Come on, man. Come on" says Matt, pushing Tyler to the locker room.
"Oh my god. Your stomach" I say, walking to Elijah.
"No, no, no. It's fine" says Elijah, pulling it away.
"Is it deep? How bad is it?" I ask.
"It's okay. I'm okay" he says, pulling up his shirt and showing the now-gone gash.
"Elijah" I say, but he walks away. I follow him. "Look, Elijah. I'm sorry" I say.
He stops and turns around, "What for?"
"It's, uh it's complicated" I say.
"Always" he replies back, smiling.
"Kol told me about your ex. Tatia?" I say.
"What did he say?" asks Elijah.
"That she broke your heart" I say.
"That was a long time ago" he says.
"When you lose someone, it stays with you, always reminding you of how easy it is to get hurt" I say.
"Katerina" he says. He walks closer to me, but I look away.
"It's okay, Elijah. I get it. You have no idea how much I get it. Complicated brother? Check. Complicated ex. Check. Too complicated to even contemplate dating, double check. It's ok. We met, and we talked, and it was epic, but then the sun came up and reality set in. So..." I say. I shrug my shoulders and walk away.
"Hey, Kat. Where u been?" asks Bonnie.
"Oh it, it was nothing. So who's winning?" I ask.
Back on the bleachers...
"Hey, Elijah. Where are you going?" asks Klaus.
"I'm going home" he says, speeding away.
I pause. I hear Bonnie and Caroline's voice in my head "All I'm hearing is reasons why you can't. I think you're scared that if you let him in, you'll lose him." I open my window quietly and climb down. First, I take hold of the roof and slide down. Then, I grab onto the pipes and slide down. I run as fast as I can to the Salvatore Boarding House. Knowing the house well, I check all the bedroom windows until I see Elijah's. I open the window and am surprised that it's open. I gaze at Elijah, he looks so calm and serene. He looks at peace and he has a small smile that grazes his lips. A few tuffs of hair are out of place and I lightly sweep a strand of it across his face. He immediately grabs my hand and pushes me up against the wall. He uses his other free hand and wraps it around my throat, strangling me.
"Elijah, it's just me" I say.
"What are you doing here, Katerina?" he asks, letting go of her.
"Shh, follow me" I say, gesturing out the window.
He pauses and just watches me. "Come on" I say and start running back to my house. He laughs and follows suit. By the time I get there, he's already there on the porch. "Come on" I say, gesturing to the back of the house and start climbing up the window.
"What are you doing?" asks Elijah.
"Climbing to the roof. What does it look like I'm doing?" I ask, laughing. Suddenly, in a flash I'm already up there. I smile. "You know, I can handle getting up to the roof myself" I say.
"I know, I just didn't want you getting hurt" he says, gazing at me.
"I know the feeling" I say, gazing back at him. Soon, I break away my eyes from his. "Come on, lay down here with me. That is if you're not afraid to get that suit dirty" I say. He chuckles and lays down with me. I turn my head to look at him and smile. He smiles back.
I sit up and pull my knees to my chest. "I used to sneak up here and write in my diary. You know and, enjoy the view of the stars or the sunset when I needed time to just get away from it all" I say, smiling. "Anyway, I'm sorry for barging in, especially after earlier" I say.
"No, no. It's quite alright. I'm glad you're here. The way we left things, I didn't like it. Plus, I enjoy the view, too" says Elijah, gazing directly at me and notices that I'm starting to shiver. "Are you cold?" he asks.
"Oh, no. I'm fine" I say.
"You know, you're not a good liar" he says, taking off his jacket.
"Oh no, really I'm, I'm fine" I protest.
"I insist" he says, wrapping it around.
"Thank you." I laugh and smile back, putting a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "See the thing is tonight, it was my fault. You didn't have to stop my brother and I just wanted to say thank you" I say.
"No thanks is required" he replies back.
"Well, I just, I mean how can you be so calm? I mean you could've gotten hurt" I say, starting to pace back and forth.
"Katerina" he says.
"I mean if it wasn't for your super vampire healing, you actually could've been injured" I continue, rambling on. He flashes over to me and puts a finger to my lip.
"I'm not hurt and I'm fine" he says. I bring my palm up to his cheek and gently stroke it. He closes his eyes, liking the feeling. I pull my hand away and turn around again, continuing walking.
"I'm sorry for barging in; especially after earlier" I say.
"No, no. I'm glad you're here. The way we left things; I didn't like it" replies Elijah.
"See, the thing is, I got home tonight planning on doing what I always do: write in my diary. Like I have been since my mom gave me one when I was 10. It's where I get everything out, everything I'm feeling. It all goes in this little book that I hide on the second shelf, behind this really hideous ceramic mermaid. But then I realized that I'd just be writing things that I should probably be telling you" I say.
"What would you write?" asks Elijah.
"I would write, Dear Diary, today I convinced myself that it's okay to give up. Don't take risks. Stick to the status quo. No drama, now is just not the time. But my reasons aren't reasons they're excuses. All I'm doing is hiding from the truth, and the truth is that, I'm scared Elijah. I'm scared that if I let myself be happy for even one moment that, the world's just gonna come crashing down and, I don't know if I can survive that" I reply.
"Do you want to know, what I would write?" he asks. I nod.
"I met a girl. We talked. It was epic, but then the sun came up and reality set in. Well this is reality, right here" he says, looking back at me. He smiles. We both lean in before he says, "I should go."
"Right" I say, turning back to gaze at the stars. Suddenly, he picks me up and I'm laying on my bed in a flash. He places a chaste kiss on my forehead. Before he leaves he says, "And thanks for showing me your top secret hiding place." I touch my forehead where he kissed me, stuck in a daze.
"Wait but, what about your jacket?" I ask, but he's already long gone.
