Chapter XXIV: Senate Spy.

A True Heart Should Never Be Doubted.

Treachery in the Senate! The Jedi Council suspects that Senator Rush Clovis is secretly taking part in a Separatist conspiracy. But to find out what the Senator from Scipio is up to, the Council will need a spy of its own. Meanwhile, Jedi Anakin Skywalker has been away from Coruscant on a lengthy tour of duty leading the clone army. Now Anakin returns for a long-awaited reunion with his wife, Padmé Amidala.

Coruscant, Padmé's Apartment.

Anakin walked into the large apartment holding a blue box before seeing C-3PO walking up.

"Master Ani! What a delight to see you. I shall tell Mistress-" The droid stopped as Padmé walked in from the balcony in a blue dress and a blue and purple headdress

"Anakin! That will be all, 3PO."

"Are you sure, my lady?"

"Yes, 3PO. Now go."

The droid nodded before walking away "Oh. Very well."

The two then embraced each other before spinning. "I brought dinner." Anakin aid looking at the box

"How did you manage this?"

"I had to hitch a ride on a cargo freighter."

Padmé looked up at him at that. "What happened to your military transport?"

"It blew up." He replied walking to the curved couch in the middle of the room. "Anyway, the freighter captain was bringing a shipment to a restaurant here, and he gave me something to bring home. We just have to…" He trailed off as he saw her looking at him. "What?"

"You called this 'home.'"

"What else would I call it?" He asked before kissing her as she walked over to him.

"The Naboo ambassador gave me something. I think I still have it here somewhere." Padmé said as they went to the couch.

Anakin sat down and placed the food on the armrest. "Must be something good."

"It is. It'll be perfect. Five-blossom bread, my specialty."

"You have a specialty?" Anakin asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I know how to make lots of things! When I was little, I cooked every day. I've been saving it for a special occasion." She replied sitting down with him.

"An evening alone with you? I can't think of an occasion more special."

Jedi Temple, Council Chambers.

"Involved with the Separatists, the Banking Clan is," Yoda said to the others who were in the room. "Discover the truth in this matter, we must."

Obi-Wan nodded at that. "I couldn't agree more, Master Yoda. But if Senator Amidala has already refused to spy on Senator Clovis of the Banking delegation, I'm not sure how we can change her mind."

"That is why we asked you to summon young Skywalker," Mace said leaning back in his seat.

"I have been signaling him all night. I don't know where he could be."

Later in the conference room, Anakin jogged in to see Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Mace around the holo table. "Sorry, I'm late. What's going on?"

"We believe Senator Clovis is conspiring with the Separatists. We need to find out what he's planning." Mace explained having Anakin nod.

"Do you want me to interrogate him, Master?"

Yoda shook his head as he walked up "No. Treat Senator Clovis as a criminal we should not."

"The slightest misstep could cause a major incident." Obi-Wan continued after Yoda.

"You feel if we provoke him, we'll never find out what he's up to." Anakin mused looking at his Master.

"Exactly. We need someone who is not a Jedi to get close to him for us. Someone he won't suspect." Mace explained

"If not a Jedi, who?"

"A fellow Senator."

"Selected Senator Amidala, we have," Yoda explained, getting Anakin's attention.

"You want her to spy on Clovis? I don't think that's a good idea. There has to be someone else who's more qualified for this. What about Naruto? Wouldn't he have someone?" Anakin asked as Mace shook his head before explaining.

"No, he has no one in the Senate who could do it without raising suspicion. We chose Senator Amidala because she and Clovis entered the Senate in the same year. They served on the same committees. They were good friends.

"I didn't know that," Anakin said, crossing his arms.

"Personal matters for the Senator, these are. Know them, why would you?" Yoda asked as he put both hands on his cane.

"It's just that I wouldn't expect Senator Amidala to have a friend in the Banking Clan," Anakin replied before leaning on the table as Mace looked over.

"Master Yoda has already asked her to spy on Clovis for us, and she refused."

"Trust you she does, Skywalker. That is why convince her, you must."

"Yes, Master," Anakin said before walking out of the room

Next Morning, Senate Building.

Anakin walked to the Senate building and saw Padmé walking out of her room where he saw a circular platform with two seats.

"Senator Amidala."

"General Skywalker. You finally found some time for me." She said while walking down the hall with him following after.

"Are you still mad about last night?" He whispered to her.

"Why would I be mad? I'm not mad."

"Good. Now tell me about your dealings with Senator Clovis." He asked her as he looked around.

"So, you're here on Jedi business." She stated as she looked forward. "(Sigh) I already told Master Yoda I don't want to spy on a colleague and an old friend."

He raised an eyebrow at that. "'Old friend'? How well do you know Clovis?"

"Why does that matter? That was before we were together."

He then directed her to another room to the seats and hit a button having the platform hover to the middle of the very large room. "I'm just trying to get a sense of who this guy is. I'll need to brief whoever does end up spying on him."

"Oh, I thought you were here to talk me into becoming an agent for the Jedi." She said as he crossed his arms at that.

"That is not a job for you. I don't agree with the Council on this. If Clovis is involved in a Separatist conspiracy, the last place you should be is anywhere near him."

"Clovis is conspiring with the Separatists? Yoda didn't tell me that! I can't believe Clovis would do that. This is terrible. I never expected that from him. Someone has to find out the truth."

"Someone does, just not you," Anakin said, having her look at him.

"Why not me?"

"Because it's going to be dangerous. Whoever takes this mission will be putting their life at risk.

"I've been in many tough situations before. It never seemed to bother you. I never stopped you from facing danger. You're constantly getting shot at." She said getting angry as he sighed.

"I've been trained for that. It's very different from spying on a traitor."

"You mean I can't handle the mission." She asked, narrowing her eyes.

"I mean I'm not gonna let you do it."

"You're not going to let me? It's not your decision to make. It's mine." She said crossing her arms.

"Lucky for us, you've already decided to refuse."

"I just changed my mind. You've convinced me that it's vital to learn what Clovis is doing. I accept the mission to spy on him."

Anakin frowned at that as he crossed his arms. "Even though I'm telling you not to."

"Don't take it personally, Anakin. Duty comes first, especially in wartime."

Jedi Council.

Anakin and Padmé stood in front of the others as she talked to them about spying on Clovis. "First, I'll need to get back in touch with him. Clovis and I haven't spoken in a long time."

"A surprise that is, given your past," Yoda said holding his hands out to gesture at her.

"What does that mean, Senator?" Anakin asked, turning to face Padmé.

"At one point, Clovis and I were close. It was my choice to return things to a strictly professional level. Clovis didn't take it well." She explained as Mace folded his hands together.

"Do you think you'll be able to rekindle your friendship with him?" He asked before Anakin turned to him and put his hands behind his back

"Master, Senator Clovis is a very dangerous man. If he realizes she's trying to trick him-"

"I'm aware of the risks, Master Jedi," Padmé said to Mace, interrupting Anakin. "But I know I can regain Clovis' trust."

"Good," Obi-Wan said from his seat. "The closer you can get to him, the better."

Padmé nodded at him. "I understand. I'll do whatever is necessary to succeed in my mission." She then turned to leave as Anakin addressed the others.

"And I'll do whatever I have to, to protect her."

Later, Padmé was with Clovis in a restaurant as a female robot walked to them with their food before leaving.

Clovis is a Caucasian man with short brown hair and two gold markings over each eye wearing yellow clothes.

"It's been good to see you again, Clovis. I didn't realize how lonely I was until tonight."

"Perhaps I can do more to ease your loneliness once I return from Cato Neimoidia."

"Oh, you're taking a pleasure trip?" She asked, causing him to shake his head.

"Hardly. I'm going there to put the fear of Scipio in those overgrown Trade Federation grubs. You know how they are. They love to borrow money from the Banking Clan, but they hate to pay it back."

"Maybe you can say a few words on my behalf. I'm on the Holo-Net with the Neimoidians every day asking for trade concessions, but I can't ever seem to make progress." She said before he straightened up in his seat at that.

"I've got an idea. Come with me to Cato Neimoidia and speak to them in person. I have leverage from the Banking Clan, you have diplomatic contacts. We can help each other."

"Are you inviting me for political reasons or because you want us to be friends again?" She asked, making him smile.

"Both, of course, although I'm far more interested in your friendship than your politics."

She nodded at that. "In that case, I'll be happy to go with you. It'll be like old times."

"On the contrary. I hope it'll be much better than the old times."

Morning, Hanger.

Anakin dressed like a pilot loaded the luggage in a silver ship before seeing Padmé with a silver headdress on and then saw Clovis.

"Senator Clovis."

"Padmé! You look exquisite." Clovis said before walking up to kiss her cheeks having Anakin grit his cheeks.

He then saw C-3PO and R2 go in as well before all three walked into the seats. "If you get tired, you can rest your head on my shoulder," Clovis said to his fellow Senator as Anakin walked between them and checked the three harnesses on the seats they walked to.

"Allow me, my lady." He then checked the one in the middle and broke it. And this one's broken. Too bad."

He then walked to the cockpit where he saw a dark-skinned man with an eyepatch over his left eye.

This is Gregar Typho

"We're ready for takeoff, Captain," Anakin said sitting in the empty seat. "All I have to do is fly the ship."

Cato Neimoidia.

As they arrived at Cato Neimoidia, the group was greeted by Neimoidian Senator Lott Dod. Padmé is shown to her quarters by two female droids while Dod and Clovis go to talk about the number of credits needed to build the new droid foundry with Poggle the Lesser. Clovis then refuses to lend them any more credits. Padmé walks down and attempts to spy on them while taking a "walk," but they shut down the holographic blueprints when they notice her.

As Clovis leads Padmé away, Dod and Poggle realize that she is Clovis' weakness and plan on poisoning her to force him to cooperate. While Anakin and R2-D2 wait outside for Padmé's signal, she gets ready for dinner with the other Senators. Dod then tricks her into sharing his drink after smearing the rim with poison.

Once dinner is finished, Clovis takes Padmé on a tour of the palace, both unaware of the poison. While Clovis goes to fetch a drink after Padmé said she was starting to get thirsty, Padmé attempts to access the palace's files but is barred by the computer's demand for a passcode. She soon figures out that it is her name, and sees the diagram from Dooku's new droid foundry in a red hologram.

She signals Anakin, who sneaks into her quarters. As soon as she takes the hologram disc with the plans, she hides it from Clovis, who then enters the room. When he asks to hold her hand, she spontaneously embraces him to hide the disc. She notices Anakin in the shadows, his face bursting with anger and jealousy, but she calms him down by brandishing the disc and dropping it as he uses the Force to pull it over.

As he slips away, Padmé suddenly passes out. Clovis reports this to Dod but is informed that Padmé is a spy. At first, he refuses to believe it but is convinced when he finds the disc missing. He angrily confronts her for betraying him, but then Anakin then enters, demanding that he step away from her.

Clovis realizes that he loves Padmé enough to save her, so he offers to get the antidote in exchange for the disc. As they carry Padmé back to the ship, they run into Dod and his aides. Clovis attempts to bluff his way out, but Dod refuses to let them leave, so Clovis pulls out a blaster. Dod is forced to give up the antidote, and the three then run away. However, Anakin purposely leaves Clovis on the planet, who is forced to "talk" with Dod, as he injects Padmé with the antidote.

A Few Days Later, Senate Building.

"Hey, Riyo."

Riyo, in her room, looked up to see Naruto with BD walking in holding a red box. "I was visiting Padmé and had some extra lunch, so I thought we'd drop by."

"Thanks, Naruto, how are you?"

"I'm good, you?"

"Bored. Not much happens here in the Senate I'm afraid." Riyo replied before Naruto started setting up the food as they started talking to each other with Naruto explaining he went back home while she explains she's been dealing with meetings with the others and other political missions as of late.

The Maelstrom.

Naruto was training Bats and the new droid who's also red with a white swirl on his chest. "OK Bats, Rusty, I've upgraded your chips and batteries so you'll aim better, faster, and last longer."

"Thanks, boss!"

"Yeah, thanks."

Naruto nodded before looking at BD. "Let's get you updated buddy."

Naruto walked to a workbench and put him down before picking up some wires and worked on BD. "OK, now you can pull me up zip-lines." He said as RC rolled over, "Hey, good timing RC got new wheels, thrusters, and battery for you too."

Knight's Billet.

Aayla walked up to Barriss sitting at a table. "Hello Barriss."

"Greetings Ayala." The Padawan greeted before Aayla spoke.

"There's something I wanted to talk to you about, but not here."

"OK, where at?" Barriss asked standing up as Aayla turned.

"A friend's place." She replied as they walked out.

Oola's Bar.

The two walked in to see Twi'leks dancing on their knees on top of tables before going to the bar. "Why are we here?" Barriss asked as Aayla turned to look at her. "To talk with a friend."

They came to the bar and saw Oola cleaning a glass. "Hey, Aayla, come for information?"

"No, I'm here to talk about Naruto." Her fellow Twi'lek replied, gaining both their attention. "He was able to get in touch and visit his home."

"Good, I believe you both said he was from a different dimension," Barriss said as Aayla nodded.

"And he's the last known male of his clan, he's being put into what's called a Clan Restoration Act."

"What's that?" Oola asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

"(Sigh) Naruto needs multiple women to have kids with to bring his clan back," Aayla explained, getting the two aliens to widen their eyes.

"Really?" Barriss asked, having Aayla nod.

"That's not too strange, a lot of other races out there do that," Oola said, putting her hands on the table.

"Yes, and I've seen the way you looked at Naruto and Oola, I've felt your feelings for him… Would you like to give it a try?"
