How Fallout changed us
Casablanca, November 2020
Raindrops were streaming down the window. Ilsa stood in front of the window and tried to follow the path of the drops with her index finger. She was doing that since she was a child.
Suddenly the rain increased. The drops smashed themselves against the glass and it wasn't possible anymore to see the paths of the drops. Heavy rain was rare in this part of the world. But Ilsa, who apparently grew up in Great Britain, was kind of a fan of the rainy weather. She was used to it and the unique sound of rain calmed her.
"There's something about rain that attracts you."
Ilsa didn't even have to turn around to know who was approaching her. She knew that voice by heart.
"What can I say? I'm British, it's in my blood", she answered with a smile on her lips.
"Do you like rain?"
"What do you think?"
Ilsa hesitated. She knew him well, but she wasn't quite sure whether she knew him well enough to get this right.
Ethan waited. He knew that she was debating her answer.
"Should I give you a hint?"
"No", she answered quickly, "I think you like rain, but you're not as fond of it as I am. You like it when it rains sometimes but you couldn't live in a place where it rains daily."
"Why am I not even surprised that you got it right?"
Ilsa smiled and shrugged.
"Because you know that I am a former MI6 agent who is trained to know everything about her target."
"Am I a target?"
Ethan smiled sheepishly.
"Don't think so much of yourself", she answered.
She turned around to face the window and the raindrops again. Her thoughts wandered back to London, where she would be now if here account with Mi6 wasn't over. She couldn't quite believe it that she would never have to work for MI6 again. She spent half of her life there, accomplished mission after mission and took down people who were dangerous for England. She's been used to be away from London and work in different places on this earth, all on her own, but now that was about to change.
She was still thinking about the offer she received from Sloane, the new secretary of the IMF. Her thoughts flew back to the conversation they had after Lane was handed over to the White Widow.
"Agent Faust, I talked to Agent Clifford. I'm pretty sure you know him."
"Yes ma'am, he's the boss of the MI6."
"Correct. We had an interesting conversation about you. He told me about the missions you accomplished in the last few years for British Intelligence. Your skills are impressive and the IMF needs people with those skills."
"That is very kind of you ma'am, but I'm not sure whether I'm returning to that kind of work. It's been a great time at MI6, but I think it's necessary for me to think about my future. I spent most of my life as an agent, it's kind of time for a change."
"I get that, believe me Agent Faust. I totally respect your wishes for your future. Just do me a favour, think about my offer. If you reject it, I will respect it, but I think you are very dedicated to your work. Let me know when you decided whether you take my offer or not."
Sloane smiled. Ilsa had that feeling, that Sloane knew exactly how her decision would turn out.
"You're still thinking about Sloane's offer, right?", Ethan asked carefully.
Ilsa lowered her head. Usually she was hard to read, not even her boss at MI6 was able to do that, except for Ethan.
"How do you know that?"
"I guess I just know."
"I'm not sure whether I should accept. Don't get me wrong, Benji, Luther, you and I would make a great team. I think we proved that in Kashmir, but…"
"You're not sure if you're tired of living in constant danger."
And he did it again. He read her like a book. She glanced over at him. Ethan stood still and admired the rainbow outside.
"I would never ask you to take the offer. I just want you to decide with your heart", he said and turned to face her for the first time since he entered the room.
They locked eyes. Ethan lost himself in her ocean blue eyes. He loved her eyes. He loved a lot about her, but her eyes were his most favourite part of her. He never got tired of admiring them.
Same goes for her. His green eyes contained so many emotions and feelings. Right now, she saw hope and a little excitement, but she knew well that those eyes could express coldness and fearlessness perfectly. She knew that they could show pain and hurt, but there was something she saw a lot lately. Unfortunately, she didn't know for sure what it was because he never talked about it, although she had an idea what it could be, but it was Ethan, so she could never be sure if she was right.
"You know that I always decide with my heart", she responded with a shaky voice.
The tension was thick between them, but neither one was willing to make the first move. Although both were thinking nonstop about each other since Kashmir, things were complicated. They were agents, possibly working for the same agency soon. The very first lesson every agent learns is about dating colleagues. That was the most dangerous thing any agent could do because as soon as your loved one is in danger you lose the distance to the situation and make irrational decisions. This puts everyone else who's involved in danger and then the mission can be thrown in the wind.
That's why almost every agency has the strict rule that their agents are not allowed to date a colleague.
But how do you say so beautifully? Rules are sometimes much simpler in theory than in practice.
"I know", he whispered.
He pulled her into a tight hug. She melted into his arms and placed her head on his chest. She could hear his heartbeat and it calmed her like the rain did before. He placed a kiss on top of her head and let go again.
"You know where to find me", he said and then he left.
It was almost as if this conversation never happened. Now it was her turn to admire the rainbow. And suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do next.
Hey guys, this is my first story. Firstly, I would like to apologise for any mistakes in grammar because english is not my native language. I'm from Switzerland, so I can only use the words and the grammar that I learn in school.
I am a big fan of Mission: Impossible and an even bigger fan of Ethan and Ilsa. Their chemistry is undeniable, and I really hope that McQuarrie brings these two together. I think that it was okay that there was no kiss in Fallout, although I wouldn't mind.
But still, I think Chris, Tom and Rebecca know the characters better than we do and I'm sure that they will make the best decision for them.
Who's as excited as I am for November 2021?
