The Elite were down to the final two, Arya and June. Sawyer sighed as he read over their forms again. He knew who it would be, but he hated to break someone's heart. Especially someone as sweet as she was. There was a knock at his door, and Everleigh entered the room.
"Hey," Sawyer greeted his sister.
"So, who is it gonna be?" Everleigh asked.
Sawyer smiled, "Oh, you'll just have to wait and see."
"Come on!" Everleigh complained. "I'm your sister."
Sawyer shook his head, "You'll find out at the same time as everyone else, I can't have you running off and telling everyone."
"I won't tell anyone," Everleigh insisted.
"No, Everleigh, go to bed, it's getting late." Sawyer said with a sigh.
"But you have decided, right?" Everleigh asked.
"Yes." Sawyer said with a smile. "I have decided."
"Okay," Everleigh said.
"Bed, now, you need your rest for the baby." Sawyer said.
Everleigh pressed a hand to her stomach, "It feels weird, having his kid."
"I know." Sawyer said. He stood and wrapped his arms around his sister. "But there was no alternative, you know if there was, we would have done it, right?"
"I know…" Everleigh trailed off. "I just, I wish there was another way, or that I hadn't of slept with him in the first place."
"I know you'd take it all back if you could, and that means that you've learned your lesson." Sawyer said. "You were really out of control, are you still ignoring your therapist?"
Everleigh shook her head, "I want to be a good mom to my baby, and that starts with me. I need to fix myself if I'm going to be a good mother, like mom was to us."
"She was pretty great, wasn't she?" Sawyer said with a sad smile.
"Oh, mom was the best, the complete opposite of dad, I don't understand how they ever wound up together!"
"I don't understand it either," Sawyer agreed. "Anyway, enough of that, off to bed."
Everleigh nodded and hugged her brother, "Good luck tomorrow."
"Thanks, I'm a little nervous." Sawyer said with a laugh.
"Why? It's not like she's gonna say no," Everleigh teased.
"I know, it's just nerve wracking." Sawyer said as he ran a hand through his hair.
"You'll be fine, I believe in you," Everleigh said. She winked at Sawyer, then left the room.
Sawyer knocked on the door and waited a few moments. The door opened to reveal Arya dressed in a night gown.
"Sawyer, what's going on?" Arya asked worriedly, wondering why Sawyer would be visiting him so late at night.
"We need to talk." Sawyer said as he stepped into the room. "Tomorrow I decide who my queen will be, and I'm really sorry to say this but I'll be proposing to June."
"Oh," Arya said, she felt deflated. Tears welled in her eyes.
Sawyer took her hands, "It's a decision that I've thought carefully about, and I'm only telling you because I didn't want you to be blindsided tomorrow." Sawyer said as he rubbed his thumb across her hand. "But there's more, I'm not just going to send you back to your mother either. That seems unnecessarily cruel."
"Then what are you going to do?" Arya asked.
"I have arranged for you to attend university, this way you can study to become a teacher, all tuition paid by the palace. In addition, I have paid for one year's rent on an apartment in Belcourt so you won't be out on the streets." Sawyer replied as he scratched his neck. "I know it's not much, but-"
Arya threw her arms around Sawyer, "It's perfect, thank you so much!" She said, this time crying tears of joy. "I never thought that I'd get away from her."
"I'm glad I could help." Sawyer said as he pulled away. "And I'm really sorry that things didn't work out between us."
"It's okay, I'm just glad I was your second choice," Arya said.
Sawyer smiled, "So am I. I need to go to bed, but I'll see you in the morning."
"Goodnight, Sawyer," Arya said with a smile.
"Goodnight, Arya." Sawyer said, then left the room. He felt relieved that she had taken the news rather well. It could have gone a lot worse. Now all he had to do was propose to the love of his life tomorrow, how on earth was he supposed to sleep?
The next day all of the eliminated Selected were gathered in the studio, sitting in the audience, with the exception of June and Arya who sat on stage at a table. Sawyer entered the room and greeted the former contestants with a smile. He approached each one and shook their hand, thanking them again for their participation in the Selection.
When he was finished his father approached him.
"Are you sure about your decision, son?" Elon asked.
Sawyer nodded, "I'm positive, I just, I can't wait to propose."
"I don't suppose you're going to tell us who it is?" Jase asked, coming up beside his brother.
"Not a chance, you'll find out soon enough." Jase said as he ruffled his brother's hair.
"I told you he'd say that," Everleigh said. She hugged her older brother and kissed him on the cheek. "Good luck."
"Thanks," Sawyer said as he approached the stage. He sat down at the table between Arya and June. He took a deep breath to steel himself as the he got the signal from the cameraman that the camera was rolling.
"June, Arya, I just wanted to say that it was wonderful getting to know you over these past few months, but unfortunately only one of you can win my heart." He stood and got down on one knee, facing June. "June, you have this huge heart of gold, you're kind courageous and hilarious, I love you more than I can express and you make me want to be a better man, a better prince. Will you do me the honour of being my bride?" He asked as he pulled a small black box out of his pocket. He opened it to reveal a ring with a white gold band adorned with tiny diamonds, complimented by a huge glittering stone in the middle of it.
June squealed in delight and stood, "Of course!" She exclaimed.
Sawyer stood and swooped June into his arms and spun her around in the air. When he set her down the pair kissed, each wrapping their arms around each other. The room broke out into applause and a few people whistled.
"I love you so much, June," Sawyer said in her ear.
"I love you too, Sawyer." June said, then kissed him on the cheek.
"I think you might want this?" Sawyer said as he held up the ring.
June laughed as she held out her hand, how could she forget her own engagement ring? She smiled as Sawyer slid the ring onto her ring finger.
"I'll do my best to be a good queen," June said with a smile.
"I know you will," Sawyer said. They stared into each other's eyes for a moment longer before the camera cut and the Selected erupted onto the stage, each congratulating June and Sawyer on their engagement.
"She's not the choice I would have gone with," Elon said to his son.
"I know, but she's right for me and for the people," Sawyer said.
Elon grunted and nodded, "As long as you're happy, son."
"I am." Sawyer said with a smile. He knew he had made the right decision in June. He had feelings from her since day one and he liked the way that she challenged him and pushed him to be better and to do better for his people. She was the Queen that he and his people deserved.
