James stood, looking out the window.
Even from where Lily stood she could tell that he was deep in thought. Biting her lip, she moved closer. "James? What's wrong?" She asked.
He startled, hands darting for his wand for a brief second before he recognized her voice. "Lily." He breathed, running a hand through his messy hair. Lily had only been marginally successful in taming it, anymore she only bothered for special events like the Ministry Ball or their anniversary dinner the month before. "I don't know... it's just. Just something Dumbledore said, I suppose." He sighed and turned back to the window.
She frowned. "He said we would be safe..." She said, but they could both hear the doubt in her voice.
He chuckled bitterly. "Yeah... yeah he did." After a beat of silence. "What happened, Lils? Not that long ago, I would have been the first one to trust him completely. Now..."
"Do you not trust him anymore?" She asked, already knowing the answer, but wanting him to say it.
"With my life." He answered immediately. "With our son, however..." He trailed off and frowned.
"I don't like the way he looked at Harry or Neville when he told us about the prophecy." Lily confessed. She hadn't liked it at all. He hadn't looked at them like the kindly grandfather figure concerned for their safety. His look had been too calculating, far too calculating considering he was looking at two babies.
"Neither did I." James sighed again, wondering what to do. "I'm going to Gringotts, I think. I still need to update my Will to include Harry." He finally said, thoughts racing through his head.
"Neither have I. I haven't had a chance, not with the Order and taking care of Harry." Lily confessed. And wasn't that part of the problem? Her and Alice had both tried to step back from the war so they could focus on taking care of their sons, who were too young to be separated from their mothers for long, but Albus Dumbledore wouldn't hear of it. Instead, when they announced their intentions to focus on their sons for right now, he'd said they needed every wand and instead set up a baby-sitting rotation. That was probably the moment she'd started to lose faith in him, she'd certainly lost some of her respect for the old Headmaster.
"Well, might as well go now." He finally muttered and stepped away from the window to get his things, while Lily turned to gather Harry and make sure his bag was refilled from the last time they took him somewhere.
"And James? What happened, is you became a father." She said from the door with a smile before leaving the room.
He blinked after her, stunned, before he smiled and shook her head. When she was right, she was right.
