Here is the first chapter of Naruto's adventures through the multiverse. After creating the tachyon matrix with the help of Earth-2 Wells and his parents along with his fight against Zoom, Naruto's increase in speed gives him the confidence to try and open up a breach to get home but he runs into a few snags. His little adventure sends him on an adventure to multiple earths where he meets new friends and discovers a lot of unique takes on earths that would make great concepts for TV shows. Enjoy!
Everything I grew up believing in was a lie. My parent's work, Dr. Wells, all of it was not at all what I thought to be. The day I was struck by lightning, it restarted my life and I protected my city with the help of my friends and partner, The Flash. Over the course of a year, I learned the truth about my parents and their work that got them killed. I avenged their death, but the mastermind is still out there. Unfortunately, things got even more complicated as Dr. Wells turned out to be the Reverse Flash, an evil Speedster from the future who came back in time to exact revenge against Barry but in the process, the people he hated ended up being his ultimate lifeline home. In his final act, Central City was nearly destroyed and, in an effort, to save it, my friend and I were thrown into an alternate world. With no way back now, I will use my speed to help the people of Earth-2 until I find a way home. My name is Impulse, and this is my story.
Adventure through the Multiverse: Part 1 Meeting a new friend
Central City Earth-2 2015
It had been a few months since Naruto and Ronnie had arrived on Earth-2 and was under the attack of all the Earth-2 metas and Zoom. Having now gained the trust and help of Earth-2 Harrison Wells along with his Parent's doppelgangers, Naruto now was ready for the next step. With their help, he made a tachyon matrix that managed to increase his speed to Zoom's level. With his increase in speed, Naruto should be fast enough that he can past between the vibrational dimensional barrier that separates the 52 known and billion unknown different earths of the multiverse. It was a crazy idea but Naruto needed help to stop Zoom, if he was still alive, and he needed to let everyone know he and Ronnie were ok.
He was in Earth-2's STAR Labs as Dr. Wells and Minato finished adjusting their system for Naruto's breach test. Naruto would run fast enough to create a breach and then get back to his earth. They were synching the Impulse suit scanners to the STAR Labs system with Naruto's new multidimensional theorem equation. He designed it as a method of transmitting data from one earth to another because he wasn't sure what was going to happen and wanted to have some way of letting his parents know he was ok. A sort of interdimensional anchor that would be able to track his speed force signature and his suits vitals via electromagnetic waves. So, it would still transmit his vitals to them no matter what earth he was on so they would know he was ok. Naruto was dressed in his friction-proof sneakers, dark blue jeans, a dark-red shirt, black button up and jacket over that and his goggles were on his head. Naruto was packing dozens of high calorie energy bars, some extra clothes, his Earth-2 tool kit which had tools and medicine, and Gideon's AI neuromorphic system which was still in his phone. There was a second holographic interface on Naruto's modified Earth-2 all-purpose smart watch. Naruto packed all of those things in a specially made STAR Labs single strap backpack.
Once he was finished packing, he made his way into the makeshift testing room where he would attempt to open the breach. Dr. Wells, Minato, and Kushina were already in there setting up their system for the test.
"Ok, your suits all set up and synched to our system." Minato said, tossing Naruto his Flash ring.
"Thanks." Naruto replied as he put it on his right middle finger.
"Do you really think you're gonna need all that?" Wells pointed to Naruto's bag.
"Better to be prepared." Naruto replied and Wells just shook his head in response. "Hey, you end up on another Earth and see if the next time you aren't prepared. Luckily, I came with Gideon, she's been a godsend."
"You're welcome Naruto." Gideon said from his smart watch.
"Well, we're all set on this end." Kushina came over with the tachyon matrix. "The matrix is set up for one more speed enhancement. Anymore and it'll damage the speed force in your cells."
"Right. Hopefully one more boost is all I need." Naruto replied before she hugged him and he hugged back. "I'll be careful, mom. I promise."
"You better be. We just got you back. I don't want to lose you all over again." She told him.
"You won't." Naruto promised as she wiped away a tear and nodded. She moved over to Minato and Dr. Wells as Naruto held up his ring and it shot out his Impulse suit. One blur and whoosh of air later and he was suited up with his mask on and his goggles resting on his head. He put his goggles on and set the Tachyon matrix on his chest as it began energizing the speed force in his cells. "Whoa…still feels incredible."
"Ok, tachyon absorption at optimal levels. Let's do this." Minato reported.
"Hey, Naruto." Ronnie said, standing off to the side. "Don't forget about me."
"I won't, Ronnie. One quick trip to our earth to make sure I can do this and I'll be back to get you. It'll be like I was never gone." Naruto assured him. "Ready, Gideon?"
"Ready when you are, Naruto." Gideon replied as Naruto's eyes flickered with electricity before he began running around in a circle of white and crimson lightning. Dr. Wells monitored his vitals and his speed as it shot up to Mach10.
Naruto ran as fast as he could with his speed further increasing to Mach12. As he raced around in a circle, he began to draw on power from the speed force. A blue portal began to flicker into existence in the center of Naruto's speed circle. "That's it, Naruto. Keep it up! Concentrate!" Dr. Wells shouted as he kept running until a blue breach solidified in the lab. "NOW!"
Naruto raced through the poral and it shut right behind him. Minato walked forward and waved his hand over the spot Naruto just was in and it was clear which meant that it worked. "He did it. Are his vitals still transmitting?" He asked as Wells looked them over.
"They are. Strong vitals and a clear signal. Let's just hope he got to the right earth." Wells said, not knowing that Naruto didn't.
Naruto raced through a wave of blue breach energy feeling the vast emptiness of the multiverse, yet it was alive with life itself. His eyes were flickering with lightning as he began to see glimpses of passing earths and people like you would see passing cars as you drive down the road. He saw various worlds with varying levels of advancements and different scenarios. As he was racing through the multiverse, the blue breach energy began to blueshift to the lightning filled aura of the speed force. He didn't know it at the time, but as he was racing through the multiverse, he was also traveling through time to a few months in the future of this new earth. He then saw another breach open up and raced through it.
Earth-38
On Earth-38, its newest hero, or actually heroine, Supergirl was flying through the sky and enjoying the breeze. It's been a week since she used her powers and came out to the world as Supergirl and she was enjoying the feeling of finally being free.
'When people see that red cape, they expect to see a certain someone. Someone they know. But this isn't his story, it's mine. It's been a week since I revealed myself to National City. So far, things are going pretty well. I think I might actually have a handle on this.' Supergirl thought to herself as she quickly nose-dived to avoid a missile to the face. She then swerved through the air to avoid another missile as she adjusted herself in the air.
"Is that the fastest you can go?" Director Henshaw asked, watching her training from the DEO makeshift testing ground.
"Are these tests mandatory for everyone or just because I'm a…" "It's not because you're a woman, Miss Danvers. The DEO requires rigorous physical and psychological evaluation for all of its prospective field operatives." Director Henshaw told her.
"I was gonna say alien." Supergirl replied.
"A novice superhero could be a liability in the field. I need to know you're in complete control of your powers. Stamina, strength, speed." Henshaw said so Supergirl kicked it into overdrive and made a sonic boom as she flew by.
"My sister just broke the sound barrier, sir." Alex reported.
"Fire again." Henshaw ordered as two more missiles were fired at Supergirl and were on her tail. She saw them closing in, so she flew up and they collided mid-air and destroyed one another. Supergirl then landed on the ground and walked over to Director Henshaw.
"So, did I pass?" She asked.
"I see your share your cousin's appetite for wanton destruction, Miss Danvers." Henshaw told her as Alex joined them.
"You know, I am starting to answer to Supergirl." She said but saw that Henshaw didn't look amused. "It's cool…we'll find our thing." He walked away as Supergirl shrugged and Alex chuckled. "Is all of this really necessary? I am ready, Alex, for all of it. I can do this."
"You know, believe it or not he's just looking out for you. You know, we both are. I had a full year of training before he even let me in the field. But I'm really glad that you know now. I hated keeping this whole part of my life from you." Alex admitted.
"And growing up, I always thought you were such a bad liar." Supergirl told her.
"That's what a good liar makes you think." Alex pointed out when Supergirl's earpiece went off.
"Supergirl. Come in, Supergirl."
"Winn, what is it? I'm kind of busy right now." She told him.
"Kara, there is a huge fire raging down at the National City port. It is bad."
"All right, I'm on my way. Fire at the port. I gotta go." Supergirl walked away but Alex chased after her.
"Hey, you've been dodging missiles and pushing your endurance for the last two hours. Even you have your limits." Alex told her.
"For the last twelve years I hid who I was. I don't have to anymore. And I don't want to waste a minute of it. Besides, this sounds like a job for Supergirl." She took off like a rocket and flew to National City.
The Police and Fire Department had rushed to the port in full force to stop a raging fire from getting out of control. They did their best to put the fire out, but it kept getting hotter. Supergirl flew by and landed by the Fire Chief.
"What can I do, chief?" She asked.
'That ships holding almost a million barrels of crude oil. If the fire reaches it, it's gonna go off like a two-ton bomb. And the tugboat won't get here in time." He told her as she began thinking of what to do. "What are you waiting for? Superman would have blown it out by now."
"Right. Ok. Uh, you've got this." She said to herself before using her super breath to try and put it out, but it accidently stoked the fire and made it bigger.
"You're making it worse!" One of the firefighters shouted. She tried to come up with another idea on the fly.
"I'm gonna try and move it." Supergirl decided, using her heat vision to cut the ropes holding the ship to the dock. She then flew to the front of the ship, grabbed it, and began moving it away. Everyone watched as the ship was slowly being moved away from the dock. Supergirl let out a guttural shout as she managed to pull the ship away, but she yanked too hard and part of the ship cracked open and crude oil began spilling into the harbor.
Supergirl realized she made a big mistake but before she could even think of doing something to fix this, she heard a huge sonic boom and the next thing she knew she saw a blur of white and crimson lightning race from the city to the docks. The blur ran into the water and around the ship in a circle. The blur created a vacuum that sucked all the oil from the ship into the air like an oil tornado. Even the oil contaminated water was sucked into the mini tornado as the blur threw a vial at the ship's crack and it instantly cemented over, stopping any more oil from leaking out. The blur slowly moved the mini oil tornado onto the docks and slowed down where the oil and water splashed down, saving the sea but drenching everyone else. The blur then raced around the fire and sucked up all the oxygen, putting it out before racing away from the city and heading to the desert.
Everyone cheered at the fire being put out and the National City harbor being saved while Supergirl was confused. "What was that?" She asked herself, flying after the blur.
Said blur was Impulse who ran from the dock to the desert a few miles out of the city and slid to a stop. "Whoa. That was a lot of running." Naruto said to himself as he caught his breath. "Always something but never dealt with an oil tanker spillage before."
"Well done for your first attempt, Naruto. I believed you saved the water and local ecosystem." Gideon told him when he sniffed his suit and gagged at the smell.
"Down side, I'm gonna smell like burning oil for a week. And I thought the sweat smell was bad enough." It was at this point when he realized where he was…or more accurately, where he wasn't. "Now, where am I?"
"I believe you're on another Earth." Gideon quipped.
"Right, but what earth am I on?" Naruto asked when he heard a sonic boom. He turned and saw a flying blur land near him and it was a beautiful blonde woman in a red cape and blue S-symbol shirt, red skirt, and boots. "How did…how did you do that?"
"I'm Supergirl." She said and Naruto was confused.
"You're who now?"
"Supergirl. I know I'm not as famous as he is, but you should know who I am." She said.
"Sorry, I don't. But how did you do the flying thing?" He asked.
"It's one of my powers. Better yet, how are you so fast?" She asked.
"I'm a speedster. The name's Impulse." Naruto introduced himself.
"Sorry, who?" Supergirl asked.
"Have you not heard of me?" He asked as she shook her head no.
"Should I have?"
"Ok, what about the Flash?" He asked but she shook her head no. "What about Zoom? The Arrow? Black Canary? Reverse-Flash? Firestorm? The Atom?"
She shook her head no at all of them. "Sorry." She said as Naruto sighed.
"Huh, I'm back to square one all over again." Narut took off his goggles and pulled his mask down so Kara could see his face and she blushed a bit but kept it down. "My name is Naruto Namikaze and I'm a superhero from another earth."
"Excuse me?" She asked.
"Yeah, I know. Crazy right but it's the truth. I'm was running back to my earth and I think I took a wrong turn." He said. "I could use your help."
Supergirl decided to take Naruto to the DEO base where she said they could help him. Which resulted in him being put in an interrogation room with his hands cuffed to the table. Naruto sighed as he was sitting at the table with his head resting on his arm, bored while Supergirl, Alex and Director Henshaw looked at him through the two-way mirror.
"A superhero from another earth?" Henshaw questioned.
"I know, it seemed crazy to me. Are we sure he's not from Fort Rozz?" Supergirl asked.
"So far we went over the registry of all prisoners there and no inmate matches his description or powerset." Alex replied.
"That we know of. Some of those records were damaged so he could be one of the escapees and we might not know it." Henshaw pointed out.
"I don't think he is. When I mentioned my name and he saw my symbol, he didn't recognize it. If he was from Fort Rozz, he would have known like Vartox did." Supergirl suggested.
"He could be a very convincing liar." Henshaw said.
"No, I looked in his eyes and his reaction was genuine." Supergirl told him only for Alex to raise an eyebrow.
"Really? His deep blue eyes?" Alex asked in a suggestive tone.
"What?" Supergirl hid her blush as best she could but wasn't doing a good job.
"Did he give you anything we can use?" Henshaw asked.
"He said his name was Naruto Namikaze." Kara told him. Alex did a quick search on the name and got a hit.
"I got something." She showed them some images on her tablet. "And I think his story is started to sound less crazy."
"Excuse me!" They heard Naruto shout in the room. "Can I have some water?! Or a Soda or something?! Stopping an oil spill is thirsty work?! Hello?!"
Naruto laid on the table, bored out of his mind and a minute from undoing the handcuffs when the door opened and Director Henshaw and Alex walked in. "I don't suppose either of you brought water, I'm parched." Naruto said as Alex handed him a bottle.
"Thanks." He drank with gusto and finished it within a few seconds. "Whew. Sorry about that but I was thirsty."
He put the bottle on the table and Alex took it while Director Henshaw sat across from him. "Why don't you tell us who you really are and what you're doing here." Henshaw told him.
"I told Supergirl and I told you when I got here. I'm a good guy." He answered, holding up his handcuffed hands. "And are these really necessary?"
"They are until we ensure you're not a threat." Henshaw said.
"I'm not a threat. If I was, I wouldn't have stopped the fire or saved that oil spillage. I willingly came to where you guys have me locked up and slapped these cuffs on me and stuck me in this room. By the way, this chair is really uncomfortable." Naruto commented, adjusting himself in the chair.
"Who are you?" Alex asked.
"My name is Naruto Namikaze." Naruto told them.
"You see, we looked and there is a Naruto Namikaze. He's 23 and a recently published author who lives with his family and fiancé in Central City." Alex said, showing him a picture of his doppelganger and they looked exactly the same and he was with this earth's version of Linda Park. "Care to tell us why you look exactly like him?"
"He's my doppelganger. Or I'm his if you want to be technical." Naruto explained but they were confused. "Did you say author? Huh, never thought of writing as a career path. Who would have guessed?"
"What do you mean doppelganger?" Henshaw questioned.
"Look, guys I'm not a clone, or an evil twin or some weird laboratory experiment. I'm Naruto Namikaze from Earth-1. I'm from a parallel earth." Naruto told them but saw they didn't look convinced. "You know the multiverse theory? First suggested by Isaac Newton, the idea of endless possible earths where every potential outcome of every possible situation has an earth where it occurred. And as such, there exist multiple versions of the same person. Obviously, this earth's version of me is enjoying life as a civilian whereas on my earth I'm a superhero."
"You really expect us to believe that you're from a parallel earth?" Director Henshaw asked, not believing this story at all.
"I can prove it." Naruto said as they looked at him. "All earths vibrate at unique frequencies as does their inhabitants. Put me next to a hertz reader and I can prove I'm right."
Henshaw and Alex left the interrogation room to go over what they learned and if there was a possibility that Naruto was telling the truth. "He was telling the truth. His heartbeat was steady the entire time." Supergirl told them.
"Which either means he's telling the truth or he believes he is." Henshaw said.
"You still don't believe him?" Alex asked. "It's not that crazy. The multiverse theory is something scientists have been trying to prove for years. Maybe on his earth, they actually did."
"Maybe, but I also have a hard time believing a 23 year old kid is able to travel between parallel worlds while the greatest scientific minds on the planet haven't been able to crack it." Henshaw pointed out.
"Is it any crazier than a super powered alien from another planet or a top secret government organization that monitors for alien activity?" Supergirl asked as Alex chuckled.
"Touché. All right, let's see if he's telling the truth." Henshaw said so Alex brought Naruto out of the interrogation room but kept him handcuffed.
This gave Naruto a better look at the hidden base he was in. "Whoa, nice place. What is it? ARGUS?"
"Not exactly. So, you said you can prove that you're from another Earth. Prove it." Henshaw said as Naruto looked at Supergirl.
"Just a bag full of sunshine, isn't he?" Naruto asked and she chuckled. "Ok, where's the Hertz reader?"
Henshaw held one up and handed it to Naruto. He made some adjustments to it to detect for the natural vibrational frequency of the earth and it did at about 67.9HZ. Naruto held it over to Alex and a few other agents and even Supergirl and it read their vibrational frequency at this level. He then placed it near himself and it read as 90.5HZ. "See. All of your frequencies are different than mine and the only reason that's possible is if I'm not from this earth." Naruto said, tossing it over to Alex unaware that Director Henshaw's eyes glowed red.
"All right, maybe your story is starting to make sense but there's still more we need to know." Henshaw told him.
"Of course, and I'm happy to help however I can. Believe me, when I first found myself on a parallel earth, it took me a week to figure out what the hell happened." Naruto said. Alex walked over with a key to the handcuffs but he stopped her. "Oh, no need."
Naruto vibrated his hands and the handcuffs slid right off. "Ah, much better." He rubbed his wrists, relishing in the handcuffs being off.
"How did you do that?" Alex asked.
"I'm a speedster. A metahuman."
"A metahuman?" Henshaw asked.
"People who acquired superhuman powers after being exposed to Dark Matter from the STAR Labs Particles accelerator explosion on my earth. I was hit by a dark matter lightning bolt and put in a coma for 9 months. When I woke up, I learned I have the ability to run really fast." Naruto told them.
"How fast are we talking?" Alex asked and Naruto got an idea.
"Back in a sec." He super sped away in a blur of wind and lightning and returned 15 seconds later in a whoosh of air. This time he was holding an ice-cream cone and also gave one to Supergirl, Alex, Director Henshaw and pretty much everyone in the DEO.
"Yes!" Supergirl was happy to see the vanilla ice-cream cone in her hand.
"That fast. I haven't reached my limit yet and my speed only increases with time. Last I checked I was at Mach12. And after I discovered my powers, I've been helping people on my earth ever since." Naruto said as he licked his ice-cream and Kara did as well, happy for the ice-cream and happy to meet another superhero.
"And I thought aliens were crazy enough but this definitely takes the cake." Alex commented.
"Wait, Aliens? Aliens are real?" Naruto asked.
"Oh, yeah. I'm an alien. And the place you're in right now is a secret government organization that specializes in monitoring rogue alien activity." Supergirl said when she realized she said that out loud. "And I probably shouldn't have said that out loud."
"No way, Aliens are real?" Naruto walked up and looked at Supergirl closely. "But you look human."
"You'll find that aliens often look like humans before humans did." Supergirl said blushing a bit with Naruto so close to her face.
"Sorry, but this is crazy. I mean, parallel earths and metahumans are one thing but aliens are another. I don't think we have aliens on my earth. So, how many other aliens are on earth?"
"Enough that our organization exists. Now while I'm beginning to believe that your story is true, we're going to need more proof." Henshaw told him when Naruto got an idea.
"Do you have my pack?" He asked and Alex handed it to him. Naruto began rummaging through it while Henshaw and Alex kept their hands on their guns until he found what he was looking for. One high-calorie energy bar and his phone which he placed on the table. He pressed a button on his watch which made Gideon's face project from the phone. "Gideon, mind helping me explain?"
"I'd be happy to." Gideon replied. Suffice to say that everyone was a little shocked.
"What is that?" Henshaw asked.
"Meet Gideon. Gideon, say hello." Naruto said.
"Greetings, I am Gideon. An interactive artificial conscious created by Naruto Namikaze himself."
"You created her?" Supergirl asked.
"Sort of. It's a long and complicated story." Naruto replied.
"Greetings, Kara Danvers. It is good to see you again." Gideon greeted as she looked at Supergirl while Supergirl was confused.
"How do you know my name?" Kara asked.
"Gideon, you know Supergirl?" Naruto asked.
"Yes, I have an extensive knowledge and backlog of all the people you've encountered in your long history. Ms. Danvers is one of your closest friends and allies." Gideon said, bringing up an image of Naruto and Kara out of costume. They were smiling and posing for a picture in regular clothes in front of what looked like the Catco building but they were a little older than they are now.
"Whoa, this is freaky." Kara commented.
"You don't know the half of it." Naruto told her. "Gideon, why didn't you just tell me about Kara and this earth? It would have made things a lot easier."
"You never asked." Gideon quipped making Naruto look at her funny.
"Remind me to adjust your neuromorphic matrix when I'm done here." Naruto said. "Anyway, just bring up the multiverse map."
"Of course." Gideon replied, projecting a picture of space and hundreds of interconnected earths.
"This is a rough idea of the multiverse. Probably since the big bang and the very existence of reality and matter, billions of earths were created with infinite possibilities to outcomes. There are 52 known and categorized earths but there are billions more that aren't. Like on my earth, earth-1 where I come from, I'm a superhero. But on your earth, earth-38 I'm an author. And the Supergirl on my earth might not be Supergirl, she might be someone else entirely. There are infinite possibilities out there." Naruto explained to them.
"Wow, this is amazing." Kara said as she looked at the map.
"How do you know all of this?" Henshaw asked.
"Gideon helped with some of it but I'm also a physicist and engineer by training so a lot came naturally." Naruto replied.
"Even so, this is beyond anything the scientists on our planet deal with." Alex pointed out.
"Yeah, believe me I had a hard time believing it but it's true. There are a million possibilities out there. One earth where the Nazis won World War 2, another where Kennedy was never assassinated, one where the Russians won the Cold War, or an earth where the Dinosaurs never went extinct. All of them exist in the same place in space and they all share the fundamental laws of physics. But they all exist at differential vibrational planes so they can't see or interact with one another." Naruto told them.
"Then how were you able to get from your earth to this one?" Henshaw asked when Alex realized the key.
"It's your speed. You ran so fast that you were able to vibrate your body to a different vibration frequency and opened a portal to another earth."
"Breach would have been a better word but that's about it. I've been increasing my speed lately and I just managed to get fast enough to attempt to open a breach. I've been trying to get back to my earth for some time but clearly I still need some practice." Naruto said.
"Back to your earth? What happened?" Kara asked.
"On my earth, my partner, the Flash and I were fighting against an evil speedster, someone like me who caused a lot of death and grief in our lives. We managed stop him but, in the process, a black hole opened up over Central City. When we closed it, I was sent through and landed on Earth-2. I've been stuck there ever since and trying to get back. This was my first attempt."
"How long have you been gone?" Kara asked.
"Almost 3 months. Hopefully, now you'll understand that I'm telling the truth."
"We believe you, Naruto. And we'll help you get back to your earth however we can." Kara promised.
"Thanks. Now, first things first, do you guys have a bathroom because I need to wash up." Naruto said so Alex pointed down the hall which resulted in him speeding past them in a whoosh of air.
"That's going to take some getting used to." She said as she looked at Director Henshaw, not noticing his eyes had glowed a faint red. "What do you think, sir?"
"He seemed to be genuinely honest but time will tell. For now, it's probably a good idea that we keep him here at the DEO."
"Well, I heard his heartbeat and he was telling the truth the entire time. And he wants to get back home. We should help him." Kara said.
"It's not something we normally handle, Kara but he's welcome to rest here for the time being." Alex promised when Kara looked at the clock on the wall.
"Oh my god, I'm late!" Kara flew out of the DEO as fast as he could.
Line Break xxxxx
Kara changed into her regular clothes, took three showers to try and get rid of the smell of the burning oil from the docks but it was still there. She walked into the elevator as the local news was doing a story on Supergirl's actions down at the docks and the mystery appearance of a white and red blur.
"Miracle or Menace? That's what the citizens of National City are asking themselves after the latest attempt at heroics by Supergirl nearly left the bay facing an ecological disaster if not for the arrival a mystery hero." The news reported with the headline, Mystery Hero saves Super Blunder.
Kara walked out of the elevator to the relief of the people who were with her as she walked onto Catco's main floor. Winn walked up to her and got a whiff of the burning oil smell. "Ah, god is that you?" He asked.
"I took three showers and I still reek of burning oil. But thank god things didn't get worse after that and there wasn't an oil spill." Kara said.
"Yeah, because of some mysterious blur. Did you see who it was?" Winn asked. "Did your cousin send one of his super friends to steal your mojo?"
"Winn, no one says mojo anymore." Kara told him. "And no, my cousin didn't send him. It's kind of complicated."
"So, you do know him?" Winn asked as they walked over to his desk.
"Sort of." She replied. She was both happy he did what he did but she was also upset at the end result. "If it wasn't for him, I would have gone from superhero to eco-terrorist faster than I can fly."
"Hey, you're just like a week into this superhero thing, you're going to make some mistakes. Like, when you first started working here and Cat asked you to get her lunch and you went to Chipotle." Winn said, chuckling at the memory.
"Yeah, except now I'm making mistakes in front of the whole world." Kara replied when they saw Maxwell Lord, local businessman, entrepreneur, and billionaire talking to the news about Supergirl's latest hero attempt.
"Forget about Supergirl's lack of experience, I'm talking about the trouble she'll bring to National City. Her and this mystery hero. Look at Metropolis. Since Superman's arrival, a veritable super bad guy war has been waged on that city. Their maintenance budgets have quadrupled. National City does not need Metropolis' problems. Even more so, we don't need another superhero who's too cowardly to show his true face. I'll give this to Superman and Supergirl, there brave enough to be seen by people but not this new blur. Whoever he is, he's not here to help." Lord spoke and Kara was pissed at the things he was saying about her, her cousin, and Naruto. They were heroes, they risked their lives to save people.
"Don't listen to him, Kara. Who cares what that guy says?"
"You do. Isn't Maxwell Lord your personal hero?" Kara asked him.
"I own a couple Maxwell Lord watches and his biography. And his autobiography." Winn said when Kara's super hearing picked up the sound of Cat in the elevator, complaining about drinking too early in the morning.
"She's here." Kara said as she subtly used her heat vision to heat Cat's coffee.
"At least now I know how you do that." Winn commented, standing straight up at his desk. The private elevator opened up as Cat walked in and everyone stood at attention.
"Here's your latte, Ms. Grant." Kara handed it to her and Cat took a small sip.
"It's hot."
"Just how you like it." Kara said.
"A concern you didn't seem to share before today. Content meeting, two minutes, my office." Cat ordered and Kara quickly got to work, spreading the word to the important people.
Everyone of importance for the media of the company was gathered in Cat's office as Cat stood by her desk, upset. "We're all aware of Supergirl's nearly disastrous debacle, yes?"
"She nearly rendered the water around the city inhabitable for the next 10,000 years." One of Kara's co-workers said as she did her best to hide her shame.
"And the appearance of this mysterious blur. It was the lead story on the Daily Planet homepage, their fifth in as many days. Which annoys me because the Daily Planet already has a go-to superhero, now they're trying to steal mine and poach a new one." Cat said as she pressed a button on her remote and all the screens in her room stopped on a stilled image of a white and red blur of lightning. "A new hero in National City. One, who is apparently so fast that even our best cameras can't get a clear shot of him or her. And yet this superhero was able to undo Supergirl's tanker debacle and put out the fire in a matter of seconds. This is front page news and direct competition for Supergirl."
"Do they have to be competition?" James asked which made Cat think for a moment.
"Perhaps a sidekick? It might be what we need. When I branded Supergirl, there was an inherent promise that she would be at a minimum, above average. But in the past week she has proven herself to be, oh what's the opposite of super? Hashtag Terriblegirl." Cat stated and Kara felt hurt at that.
"You know, Superman made plenty of mistakes when he first started. At least she's saving lives." James said, making Kara feel a bit better.
"In the sloppiest most awkward way imaginable, James." Cat countered getting him to shut up when she got an idea. "James, your big blue boy scout pal wouldn't to have mentioned a mysterious super friend who moves really fast?"
"Like this guy? Not that I know of." James replied.
"Shame. Well, he or she is mine now and like Supergirl, I will announce his or her presence to the world. So, it is left to us to take control and craft a narrative for Supergirl and this mystery blur. Save her from self-immolation, scope the Planet, and get another superhero under my belt. I want an interview." Cat said causing Kara to snicker on reflex which everyone saw. "Yes, Kara?"
"Sorry, sorry. I just…I just started to think about this kitten video I saw online earlier. It's so funny what they make those cats do. I'll send it to all of you. Or not." Kara said as she tried to cover herself but only looked like an idiot.
"James…perhaps your friend in blue would be useful in arranging a sit down? Maybe you could broach the subject, the next time you Bro Hang." Cat suggested.
"It, uh, doesn't really work that way, Ms. Grant." James replied.
"Well, let me assure all of you. Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and all of the hags over at the Daily Planet are working day and night to get this exclusive. We need to get it first. I want a sit down with Supergirl. A girl to girl talk, but more importantly, I want a clean image of our mystery superhero. I want a picture of the Blur. And I want it by the end of the week. Go, go." Cat ordered them. "Uh, not you Kiera."
Everyone left Cat's office while Kara stayed behind. "Do you really think I don't know what's going on with you?"
"You do?" Kara asked.
"Well, no. And honestly, I don't care. But whatever it is, it's affecting you at the office. Now you need to join a gym, uh, see a shrink, whatever, but get your head out of the clouds and back behind the desk where it belongs." Cat told her Kara nodded and left. She walked out of Cat's office and up to James.
"I am not doing that interview. No, I can't. I mean, I can't. Ms. Grant's not stupid. She'd recognize me in, like one second." Kara said as they walked to James' office.
"She will look at Supergirl right in the face and not even see her assistant." James told her.
"Well, how can you be so sure?" Kara asked.
"Because she doesn't see you now. I watched it happen for years with your cousin. Why don't you think that people recognize him as Clark Kent?" James asked.
"Reading glasses and a good slouch?" Kara suggested.
"No, he's able to hide because the world can't believe that there's really a hero in their midst." James told her.
"Yeah, and I'm sure there's a good reason why my cousin keeps his job at the Daily Planet instead of flying around as Superman all the time, which would be so much easier." Kara commented.
"Yeah, well, one he's able to pay his rent." James pointed out.
"She's going to keep pressuring you about that interview." Kara told him.
"Oh, I can handle, Cat Grant. Besides, my bigger issue is trying to get a picture of this new hero. I don't suppose you know who he is?" He wondered.
"Sorry, James. It's not my secret to tell." Kara said and James nodded.
"And I respect that. Don't suppose you'll give me a heads up on when he makes his next move, so I can get a photo?" James asked as Kara chuckled.
"That I can probably do. If he sticks around long enough." Kara replied.
Speaking of Naruto, after getting a shower and change of clothes he had settled into his temporary residence at the DEO base. They had living quarters there so Naruto had a place to get some rest. Director Henshaw was talking with Alex as they were going over reported Alien activity but there wasn't anything at the moment.
"Keep monitor of all the activity in the area. Something tells me we'll be getting an uptick soon." Henshaw said.
"Yes, sir." Alex replied.
"How's our visitor from another earth?" Henshaw asked as they looked at Naruto sitting in their tech lab working on something. "What is he doing?"
"Let's ask." She replied and they walked over to see Naruto working on the wiring of his watch and a thick watch-like bracelet-band. Naruto was using some precision tools to adjust the wiring when Alex and Director Henshaw walked in.
"Director. Alex. Thanks again for letting me stay here for the time being."
"It's not a problem so long as you don't cause any issues." Henshaw said.
"Well, don't worry. I solve problems, don't make them." Naruto joked as he finished his maintenance. "I've got to say, this place is awesome. Although, your computer system is a bit outdated and your security could do with some improvements."
"This is one of the most advance and secure places on the planet." Henshaw told while Naruto just looked at him.
"In this universe. There were people on my earth that thought the same thing, but no one is secure. You're running the TG-9000x computer system but those computers have an inherent coding error that makes long-term coding, monitoring, and hacking slower than it should be. Not to mention the connection to satellite grids is not as stable if you run a reverse-helix algorithm. Plus, a well-placed Trojan variant virus could cripple your system's operating speed." Naruto pointed out, stumping Henshaw, and making Alex chuckle at the site. "Science, engineering and computers is in my blood."
"How did you know all that?" Alex asked.
"On my earth, I pretty much got into science since I could think. I graduated with a degree in theoretical physics and mechanical engineering but I'm also well-versed in bio-medical, nuclear, electrical, weapons, and pretty much every kind of engineering. I'm kind of a genius on my earth." Naruto said with a chuckle. "I'd be more than happy to help upgrade your system while I'm here. Think of it as repayment for letting me stay."
"I'll think about it. This STAR labs you mention, they monitor metahumans like you?" Henshaw asked.
"Not exactly. STAR labs doesn't officially monitor metahumans but it's the only place on the planet that can stop the bad ones from causing havoc." Naruto corrected him. "You have the DEO to stop aliens, the Flash and I had STAR labs to stop and capture rogue metas."
"How long have you been a superhero?' Alex wondered.
"About a full year. But it's felt like longer as each new Meta we stop is a new science problem. But luckily, science is one thing I excel at. I've had some friends and teachers to help me along the way and STAR Labs is my home. I was raised there and half of it happened to be mine before I left. We've done some pretty extraordinary things there." Naruto told them, remembering the fond memories.
"Like what?" Alex wondered so he put his phone on the table and pressed a button showing them a holographic image of the Arc reactor.
"The Arc Reactor. A self-sustaining, clean energy reactor that is miles beyond nuclear power. This one powers STAR Labs and all of Central City. And with some more tweaks, could do a lot more." Naruto explained and they were impressed.
"Impressive." Henshaw commented.
"And I've done a lot more with weapons and other things of such nature." Naruto pressed a button on his smart watch and a small dart vial popped into the air which he caught. "This is the thing I used to seal up the crack in that ship."
Naruto tossed it to Alex who looked it over and it was a small blue dart/vial the size of a nickel. "What is it?"
"Polyurethane foam or Liquid cement. Useful for trapping metahumans and ceiling up cracks in ships apparently."
"Impressive." Henshaw looked it over. Something like this could come in handy. "What are you working on now?"
"It's something I was working on back on Earth-2. My last ones were damaged so I needed to make some adjustments to my new models along with making them smaller." Naruto put the watch on his left wrist and the band on his right. "Activate voice command."
"Voice command authenticated." Gideon replied.
"Deploy." The watch and band opened up and extended around his hands, encasing them in dark red metal armor like a gauntlet. The metal encased his entire hands in armor with a glowing blue circular plate in his palm. Both gauntlets extend to the middle of Naruto's forearm but on his left one there as high-tech touch pad, sensor system, and dart launcher. (1)
"Whoa." Alex said.
"Cool, right? Repulsor gauntlets. Uses my own body's kinetic energy and the lightning I generate when I run to fire high-charge concussive pulse beams. These ones are made up of a retractable Nano-material of Promethium metal." Naruto demonstrated the metal's strength by picking up a screw driver and snapping it in half like it was a chopstick. "And the metal's heat and abrasion resistant along with poly-memetic so it can take the force of running at extreme speeds."
"Very impressive, Naruto." Henshaw said as the gauntlets back into the watch and wrist band.
"Thanks. I'd be happy to create a few things for the DEO while I'm here. I like to keep busy. In exchange for some money to buy food."
"If you're hungry, there's a commissary here." Alex told him.
"Yeah, but one of the down sides of being a speedster is that I need to consume about 10,000 calories to keep my metabolism up. And that's when I don't use my powers." Naruto explained. "I don't want to empty your entire food stores in a day."
"Right. We'll figure something out." Henshaw assured him.

Kara was at her desk, diligently doing her work while Cat and everyone else were invested in trying to track down Supergirl and the Blur for a picture or better yet, an interview. Kara was so invested in her work in helping Cat that she didn't notice someone walk up to her desk. "Wow, guess print media isn't dead after all." Kara heard so she looked up and saw Naruto in regular clothes standing in front of her desk holding a soda from Big Belly Burger and a coffee.
"Naruto, what are you doing here?" Kara asked.
"I was running by and figured I'd check in. Here, Spiced Pumpkin with extra foam and little cinnamon sprinkled on top." He handed her the coffee.
"That's my go to. How did you know that? And how did you know I worked here?" Kara asked.
"I'm a mind reader as well." Naruto said, noticing the look Kara was giving him which make him laugh. "Just a joke. Alex told me."
"Oh."
"Yeah. I got washed up and needed something to eat so came to the city. Glad to know there's a Big Belly Burger here." Naruto casually sipped his soda. No matter what earth you went to, Root Beer always tasted like Root Beer. There was a nice…universality to it.
"How did you pay for that?" Kara walked over to put some mail in the outgoing box.
"Lucky enough our two earths have the same currency." Naruto replied, looking around to get really see the place and it was impressive. "Wow, so this is one of your world's biggest media empires. It's impressive."
"Yeah, ever seen a place like this on your earth?" Kara asked.
"No, nothing on this scale. I think that office is bigger than my bedroom." He joked which earned a chuckle from Kara. "So, what got you into Print media?"
"Well, originally I thought that this was my way to help people. Ms. Grant's voice reaches a lot of people and this was before I became Supergirl. And I've been here for two years now." Kara explained.
"So, do people really not recognize you because you do your hair up and your glasses?" Naruto wondered and she messed with them a bit.
"Not yet." Kara said and to her word, no one in the office gave them a second glance.
"Huh, guess you don't always need a mask to be a hero." He commented when Winn walked over with some files.
"Hey, Kara. Hey, guy I don't know." Winn greeted them.
"Hey back, guy I don't know as well." Naruto joked. "Name's Naruto."
"Huh, odd name." Winn said.
"It's Japanese." Naruto told him.
"And this is my friend, Winn." Kara said.
"And you say that my name is odd?" Naruto joked causing Kara to chuckle.
"Touché. So, what brings you to Catco?" Winn asked, noting how close he and Kara seemed to be.
"Oh, just popped in to say high to a friend." Naruto replied.
"Kiera!" Cat shouted.
"Oh, boy." Winn sat at his chair and did what he could to avoid being seen or draw attention.
"What's wrong?" Naruto asked as Cat walked out of her office.
"Kiera, I need you get me our head of distribution. And cancel my dinner with the head of Fox. The less time I spend with their brand, the better. Tell them something came up." Cat said and Kara wrote everything down diligently.
"Wow." Naruto said to himself. "And I thought Captain Singh was tough."
Cat looked and saw Naruto there. "You don't work for me. I know that because I would recognize your bright blonde hair and spiky porcupine locks prancing through my floor, now who are you?" She asked as he touched his hair.
"Is it really that spiky?" Naruto asked Winn who shook his head no. Kara quickly introduced him to Cat so she wouldn't throw him out.
"This is my friend, Naruto. He's visiting."
"Nice to meet you, Ms. Grant." Naruto held his hand out but she didn't look interested and he put it down. "Realizing now that wasn't a good idea."
"A quick learner and the whiskers on your face, were those a poor attempt at a tryout for Cats the musical or did an animal maul you when you were a child?" Cat questioned making Naruto feel like Ra's al Ghul was interrogating him.
"Uh, there birthmarks, actually." Naruto replied, hiding his face while he drank his soda.
"Right, Kiera I need to talk to you in my office." Cat ordered. She walked in and Kara whispered sorry to Naruto before following her.
"Wow." He felt like he was just put through a ringer and he talked to her for barely a minute. "How do you work for her?"
"The money's good and I don't actually have to talk to her." Winn answered.
"Lucky you." Naruto said as he looked at his reflection in a TV and touched his hair. "Is my hair really that spiky?"
Winn looked at Naruto and his hair once more. "No. No, you're fine." Winn replied, not convincingly and it was started to make Naruto a little concerned.
Kara walked into Ms. Grant's office as Cat looked at the blonde man on her floor. "Yes, Ms. Grant?" Kara asked.
"I need those layouts from the design studio for tomorrow's issue. Contact James and have him expedite them immediately and tell him that I'm still waiting on my photo of the Blur." Cat told her and Kara wrote it all down.
"Yes, Ms. Grant." Kara replied.
"And call my lawyer to set up a meeting. I want the Blur trademarked as soon as possible before someone else does." Cat said, sparing a second look at the spiky haired man standing near Winn's desk looking over the computer setup. "So, who's your friend?"
"Naruto? He's a…friend from college who came to visit." Kara told her.
"Your friend is named after a Japanese fishcake used to decorate noodles? That's horribly tragic or tragically horrible; I haven't made up my mind yet." Cat said, causing Kara to snicker a bit. "But I now know what's been going on with you."
Kara looked at her and then realized what Ms. Grant was implicating. "Oh, no Ms. Grant. It's not what you think. Naruto and I are just friends." Kara assured her with an unconvincing flush on her face.
"Is that flush on your face supposed to convince me or yourself? Kiera, I make it a point to keep out of the affairs of my employees and it's something that I take great pride in but in this case, I'll make a small exception. Whether you find yourself attracted to your friend over there with the unnaturally spiky hair or to a certain photojournalist is up to you, but the longer you don't act on it the longer it will affect you at work. So, make up your mind and cast your fishing pole to scrounge up something before they both swim away." Cat said, imparting her own brand of wisdom on her assistant. "That'll be all."
Kara nodded and walked back to her desk to see Naruto talking to Winn. "Hey, you ok? You look a little flushed." Naruto commented as Kara cleared her throat and readjusted herself.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Cat just made some colorful comments about your hair." Kara told him, causing him to touch it in response.
"Is it really that spiky?" Naruto was now concerned about it as he looked at his reflection in the TV.
"Maybe." She said as Naruto sighed.
"It's not my fault. I tried having it cut short once in middle school and I looked horrible. Really, it looked like a blonde-colored bowl-cut." Naruto told her. Kara then got a text from her sister about an alien related attack at the Plastino chemical factory.
"Alien attack at a chemical factory." Kara said.
"Race you there?" Naruto asked with a smirk making Kara smile.
"Definitely."
They left the building and stepped into an alley with no cameras. Kara opened her dress shirt to reveal her suit underneath while Naruto held out his ring and his suit popped out. He quickly changed and they super sped through the city, Naruto running on the street while Kara flew above.
Kara flew down next to Naruto as they raced through the city to the chemical plant. Naruto looked over and smirked as Kara smiled, having fun. "All right, Supergirl. Show me what you got!" Naruto shouted, quickly speeding up to Mach 6 and leaving her in the dust.
"Oh, you're on." Kara then kicked it up a notch as she and Naruto were neck and neck the entire way when they arrived at the chemical plant just before the DEO did.
Naruto slid to a stop outside the factory just as Kara landed on the ground next to him. "Oh, nice try girl of steel but I take that round."
"Are you kidding me, I had that one." Kara told him as they walked in.
"Really, because I distinctly remember hearing the flutter of your cape behind me in our race." Naruto said.
"Yeah, well I remember seeing your lightning flicker behind me a few times during the race." Kara replied.
"Keep telling yourself that, Girl of Steel but we both know I won that race." Naruto joked.
"We'll see about that, Crimson Speedster." Kara said, waking in to see a bunch of DEO agents going over the crime scene and the body. Naruto and Kara walked over and they saw a large orange spike in a security guard's chest.
"Whoa. That's a nasty way to go." Naruto knelt down to get a better look.
"Aren't they all?" Kara asked.
"Some more than others. Jeez, must have been some kind of alien to throw a spike with this amount of force that it went through the bone." Naruto commented, noting the angle of depth, impact wound, blood splatter, and penetration length.
"You sound like you've done this before." Kara commented.
"Yeah, before the whole earth jumping thing, I worked part-time with the Central City Police Department as a CSI. Granted, it was a short internship but I worked with one of the best and I've picked up a few things." Naruto replied.
"CSI, scientists, and superhero. How did you manage all that?"
"Once I found my rhythm it wasn't that hard. Besides, when you can do things super-fast like we can, it's a lot easier." Naruto said.
Director Henshaw and Alex then walked in and saw Kara and Naruto in their suits. "What are they doing here?" He asked.
"I called her. We hunt aliens, she is one. It was a resource we didn't have before. Don't know what he's doing here though." Alex replied.
Naruto and Kara stood up at attention when they saw Alex and Director Henshaw walk over. "I was in the neighborhood, figured I'd lend a hand. I have some CSI background knowledge so I know my way around a crime scene."
"What else can we do to help?" Kara asked.
"Try not to cause any more oil spills." Hank told her.
"Take a look around but don't touch anything." Alex told her before she and Director Henshaw walked away.
"He's really just a pile of sunshine, isn't he?" Naruto joked causing Kara to chuckle. "Come on, let's see what else we can find."
Naruto used his gauntlet to scan the spike that killed the guard when Kara remembered seeing something like that back on Krypton. Alex and Henshaw walked to the side to talk about what happened in the plant. "Alex, this whole factory specializes in chemical manufacturing. Sodium hypochlorite, ammonium nitrate."
"Ingredients for a chemical bomb?" Alex asked.
"Yeah. We need to find this alien, fast."
Naruto scanned the rest of the facility and picked up some foreign prints and impressions over the ceiling and the walls which meant that this thing was agile and moved fast. After they finished at the chemical plant, they went back to the DEO to find out what kind of alien they were dealing with.
"Whatever kind of alien you're dealing with is an interesting one. The prints I picked up showed it was able to move around with excellent skill and agility all along the plant including the ceiling. Not to mention those stinger things you pulled out were thrown with pinpoint accuracy from a distance. He hit the heart so death was instantaneous and it was with enough force to break bone." Naruto said.
"Where did you learn all that?" Henshaw asked.
"I worked with the Central City CSI department back on my earth and with one of the best doctors at STAR Labs." Naruto explained.
"Huh, jack of all trades?" Alex asked.
"Sort of."
"You're looking for a Hellgrammite. That stinger you pulled out, I've seen it before on Krypton. My mother sent one of their kind to Fort Rozz." Kara said as Alex brought up the DEO files they recovered from Fort Rozz.
"According to the data we salvaged from the wreckage of Fort Rozz, there was a Hellgrammite prisoner." Alex said.
"What do we know about his species?" Henshaw asked so Alex brought up the image to show a creepy bug-like alien.
"Not much."
"It's basically a large insect, but he can camouflage himself into any shape he wants. Humanoid included." Kara explained.
"Yeesh and I thought regular bugs were bad." Naruto muttered.
"A giant insect trying to steal bomb-grade chemical compounds. This job never ceases to surprise." Henshaw remarked.
"You guys track him down and I'll take him out, just like we did with Vartox." Kara planned, confidant she could handle the Hellgrammite.
"Sure thing Ms. Danvers. If you can prove to us you can handle yourself without getting killed." Henshaw told her. Naruto noted how similar Henshaw sounded like Oliver when he trained him and Barry. He didn't say the same thing, but the underlying meaning was the same: you had a lot to learn before you went out in the field.
"I know someplace where we can do that." Alex told him.
"Maybe I could help with that, hero to hero." Naruto said as they looked at him. "I've been doing this a lot longer and I've dealt with some really strange metahumans."
"Follow me." Alex led them through the base until they arrived at one of the small enclosed rooms in the facility.
"What is this place?" Kara asked.
"A specialized training area. When I joined the DEO, I spent 12 hours a day for five straight months in this room. We need to know that you're prepared to fight any threat out there." Alex said.
"Alex, I can bend steel with my bare hands and last week, I kicked Vartox's butt. I'm ready enough." Kara told her.
"You sure about that?" Naruto asked as he stepped onto the training floor.
"Yeah, I am." Kara replied when Alex actually punched Kara across the face and knocked her onto the training floor as green colored lights powered up around the room.
"Ow." Naruto commented as he helped Kara back up to her feet.
"How did you do that?" Kara asked as Alex stepped onto the training mat.
"Kryptonite emitters. They're only at 18%. Not enough to permanently harm you but enough to sting." Alex warned her.
"I just found out last week that Kryptonite exists. Only the DEO knows it can hurt me." Kara said.
"This is exactly the point, Kara. You may have powers but so do the Fort Rozz aliens you'll be faced with. Now only do they have the element of surprise, but they have also had time to master their abilities. We may not always have time so we need to be prepared to face anyone. Now, hit me." Alex told her so Kara charged and threw out a punch, but Alex grabbed her arm and threw her over his shoulder. She hit the ground like a sack of potatoes and groaned in pain.
"That hurt. Believe me, I know from experience. Never wind up for a punch. It leaves you vulnerable for a counter attack." Naruto instructed as she looked at him. "Your attacks need to be precise and deliberate. You throw out an attack with 50% effort into it, it could cost you everything."
Kara got back up and attacked Alex but she ducked and dodged each attack while Naruto watched. Kara's punches were sloppy and uncoordinated, a lot like his when he first started training with Oliver. Alex then grabbed her punch, twisted her wrist, and forced her to her knees. "You're hesitating."
"Of course, you're my sister." Kara told her.
"Well, don't hesitate. Come at me with what you have." Alex said, as Kara threw out another punch which resulted in her getting thrown to the ground.
"Mind if I tagged in?" Naruto wondered as Alex nodded, helping Kara up to her feet. "Now, I know from personal experience that this may seem like a complete waste of time but this is a valuable skill to hone. Believe me, I know."
"You've done this?" Kara asked as she rubbed her arm.
"Yeah, I've had mentors and teachers who've explained to me dangers people like us face out there. And one crucial lesson they've always taught me is patience and keen observation. You never go into a situation blind or without doing recon first." Naruto instructed. "Kara with our speed, we have the extra time to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. Never run into a situation blind. Like at the docks."
"What do you mean?" Kara asked.
"At the docks, when you pulled the freighter away you used too much strength and it cracked. Now, while moving the freighter was a smart idea, there were other ways to take care of the fire. Every time you go to a situation, you need to take a second to analyze the environment before you act. If you make a mistake, people can die." Naruto said, motioning her to come at him.
Kara hesitated for a bit but Alex motioned her to go so she attacked Naruto who ducked and dodged all her strike. He saw that Kara was still relying on her strength too much and he could tell from her stance and fighting. "Living this kind of life is dangerous, Kara. Especially with the aliens you'll be facing and sometimes powers alone aren't enough. You need to know how to use them. There's a difference between having powers and having precision. It's not enough to be strong or fast, you need to be smart. Discipline is key here." Naruto said, continuing to the duck and doge.
Kara was beginning to get frustrated as her swinging got more violent and erratic. He ducked under a swing and did a leg sweep, knocking her on her back. She growled in frustration as it seemed like Naruto was doing this just to humiliate her. "When you fight a superior opponent, you use their strength against them. Exploit it and it'll turn the tide in a fight." Naruto held his hand out for her to grab. She did and tried to throw him to the ground, but Naruto saw that coming and did a reversal, throwing her over his hip and sending her to the ground with a loud thud.
"That's it. Enough, you made your point." Kara said in anger, getting up and wiping her hands clean of dirt. Alex turned off the Kryptonite emitters as Kara made her way to the door.
"Kara, Naruto's right. This is important." Alex tried to explain but she just walked past her.
"Maybe I'm not DEO or Speedster material." Kara said. "I think I know why my cousin prefers to work alone."
"Kara, its training! It's important!" Naruto shouted as Henshaw walked in.
"Ms. Danvers." Henshaw greeted Kara just as she walked out.
"I hate that you made me do that." Alex said to Hank.
"You should be thanking me. You may have just saved your sister's life." Henshaw told her.
"Maybe we could have gone at it in a different way though. Everyone trains different. The training that worked for me didn't work for my friend. Quite frankly, I'm not sure if those lessons really sunk in. When you have powers, it's hard to let someone without them tell you you're doing it wrong." Naruto pointed out, knowing from personal experience.
"Still, quite some impressive footwork and skills." Henshaw commented.
"Where did you learn all that?" Alex asked as Naruto jumped from the training mat.
"Oliver Queen. He's like me…well, he does what I do but in a different way. He's one of the best hand-to-hand fighter I know, and he trained me. I'd be dead or in worse shape by now if it wasn't for his training." Naruto explained.
"Well, let's test that theory. Show me how superhero training differs from DEO training." Alex made her way onto the mat with a smirk that she was ready for a challenge. Naruto was more than happy to oblige and got onto the mat across from her.
"Show me what you got." Naruto challenged as the two charged at one another.

It's been two days since the training incident with Kara and she hadn't come back. Naruto felt bad for how things turned out but Alex told him to give Kara some space. This turned out to be a good thing as Supergirl was now going around National City and performing some miraculous saves and quickly earned back the city's favor. Despite this, Naruto still wanted to talk to Kara and he'd do it along with a box of crullers from Kara's favorite place.
Naruto had stayed at the DEO base in that time, working on some new things for Director Henshaw including new body armor and weapons along with upgrading his entire system. Naruto just finished a prototype for a new project when he decided to go apologize to Kara. He stopped by the Cruller place Alex told him about and picked up two boxes, one for her and one for him. He was dressed in his casual clothes and walked up to Kara's apartment which Alex gave him the address to. She was a little apprehensive about giving him Kara's address, but Naruto had proved himself trustworthy. She said something about his face made it easy to trust him, which he took as a compliment.
Kara was having a good day, having gotten back from her recent trek into the city and was watching the news with James and Winn about Supergirl's recent heroic exploits. "A dazzling display of heroics by the Girl of Steel now has a grateful National city asking, What Blur? Watch out Metropolis. Looks like we're about to give you a run for your superhero money." The newscaster said causing Kara to clap in glee.
"I can't believe it. It's working. People are really starting to believe in her."
"In you." James told her.
"Well, I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you. Both of you." Kara said as Winn and James smiled. They then heard the door knock so Kara x-rayed the door and saw Naruto standing there with two boxes.
"God, what did you order more pizza? You're a beast." Winn said as Kara walked to the door.
"Kara! Kara, the cape!" Winn and James tried to stop her before she opened the door, but it was too late. She opened the door to see Naruto holding two boxes with a sorry look on his face.
"Hey, Kara. Can we talk?" Naruto asked, holding up the two boxes. "I brought a peace offering."
"If I x-rayed that box, would I see a cruller?" Kara asked.
"You'd see a dozen crullers. I managed to get the last of them." Naruto replied as Kara moved aside so he could see Winn and James. "Oh…you have company. I'm sorry, I can come back later."
"No, it's fine." Kara motioned Naruto to come in and he slowly entered.
"Wow, nice place. Guess being Cat's assistant must pay nice." Naruto said.
"Sort of." Kara replied when she saw the confused looks James and Winn were giving her. "James, this is Naruto Namikaze. Naruto, this is James Olsen. Winn you already know."
"Right, hey." Naruto put the boxes on the kitchen counter and waved at them.
"Hey, Kara he knows who you are?" Winn asked.
"Better yet, how does he know who you are?" James added.
"It's a long…and complicated story." Kara said as she looked at Naruto who shrugged.
"But in simple terms." He super sped behind them in a blur of lightning. Winn and James saw Naruto disappear when they heard the sound of eating behind them. They turned and saw Naruto eating a donut. "I'm the Blur from the docks."
"Ok, I was not expecting that." Winn said.
"So, you're a superhero?" James asked and Naruto nodded before finishing the donut.
"Yeah, just stopping through National City on the way home and lent a hand at the Docks. Would you guys mind giving Kara and me a second to talk?" Naruto wondered.
"Uh, sure." James replied, still not sure about the guy as he and Winn left. Kara then super sped and got changed into some pajamas.
"Coffee?" She asked, walking over to get herself some.
"Yeah, that'd be great thanks." Naruto replied and Kara poured some in another cup. "So, Winn knows you're Supergirl? And that James guy?"
"James already knew I was Supergirl. My cousin told him. And Winn's my friend. I'm allowed to have friends, right?" Kara wondered as they sat down at the kitchen counter and she handed him his cup.
"Hey, everyone needs some friends in this line of work. I have some at STAR labs who helped me and the Flash keep Central City safe. And I've also made some new ones in this line of work." Naruto said as Kara looked at him. "I've found that as a superhero, your secret identity is never that good of a secret when it comes to the people you're closest to."
"So, how did you know where I lived? And where to get Crullers?" Kara asked, taking one of them from the box.
"Alex, told me. After I told her what I wanted to do she said it was fine but threatened to shoot me in the head if something bad happened. And coming from her that was terrifying." Naruto explained which made Kara chuckle.
"Yeah, she's always been looking out for me since the day my cousin dropped me off at her house." Kara thought back to her childhood and remembered some fond memories. "I remember the first time I was scared of the popcorn maker and she crawled under the table next to me. Showed me some melted butter and salt and the scariest thing turned into a love affair with popcorn."
Naruto chuckled as he heard the story. "Must have been awesome growing up with a sister like Alex."
"Any siblings?" Kara asked and saw him hesitate for a second.
"Technically no. Only child and…my parents died about three years ago." Naruto told her.
"Oh, Naruto. I'm sorry."
"It's fine. But…I did end up making new friends who became like family. Caitlin Snow, she's our resident doctor at STAR Labs and she pretty much became an older sister to me. Not like Alex, more of the nagging ice queen type sister." Naruto joked causing Kara to chuckle. "But she's the best."
Kara looked at Naruto and could tell he missed his friends and his earth. "And like Caitlin would nag me to do if she knew what happened, I wanted to apologize for what happened at the DEO. Alex and I probably could have handled that a bit better." Naruto said.
"Yeah, you sure could have." Kara added.
"And I'm really sorry about that. If I hurt or offended you in any way, I want you to know that wasn't my intention." Naruto sincerely told her. "And to be fair, I never really trained anyone before. I kind of just did what my trainer did for me when I first started."
"Who was that?"
"Oliver Queen, or as his alter ego goes by, The Arrow." Naruto said.
"The Arrow?" Kara asked.
"Makes sense when you see him in action. But he's the one who trained me to fight. Without his training and guidance…I'd be dead or in worse shape by now. I owe him a lot." Naruto said and Kara noted that he spoke about him with admiration.
"So, he's a superhero?" She asked but Naruto shook his head no.
"Super implies powers and the only power that Oliver has is his sheer determination and body of will. He's human. And by human, I mean regular human, not metahuman."
"Wow." Kara replied.
"He's unique. Oliver is…well, was someone born into privilege. His father owned a multi-billion-dollar company and, while I don't like to speak behind someone's back, he was kind of a spoiled, rich playboy." Naruto said. "To be honest, I'm not sure if I knew the old Oliver that we'd even be friends."
"So, what happened?" Kara wondered as she took a bit of her donut.
"He got shipwrecked on a hellish island for 5 years and pretty much went through hell and back until he was rescued. Oliver changed during his time away and when he got back home, he made it his mission to keep his city safe at the expense of his own life. He does what you and I do every night except he doesn't have any powers or abilities. Just sheer force of will, skill and training. And he's not the only one."
"He sounds a lot like a guy my cousin worked with once. A vigilante. Tons of gadgets, lots of demons, he was a little weird by how Clarke described him. Even though Clarke said he became something of an ally." Kara said as she looked at Naruto. "Not that Oliver is like that."
"I'd like to say your way off, but I'd be lying. Oliver has his issues, but above all he always put his city before himself. And he's taught me a lot about doing this and that's what I was trying to teach you. But I think I channeled too much Oliver." Naruto admitted. "I was just looking out for you, superhero to superhero. Friend to friend. I've learned some pretty valuable and…painful lessons doing this."
Naruto rubbed his shoulder as he remembered a lot of the painful lessons and reminders in his job as a hero. "And I'm grateful for that. Really, I am, but I'm ready for this Naruto." Kara said, confident she was ready to be Supergirl. "I know I still have a lot to learn, but James and Winn believe in me."
"And so, do I." Naruto assured her. "Sometimes the most important thing is having someone believe in you. It makes all the difference."
"Yeah, it does." Kara replied, smiling at Naruto. "Thanks, Naruto. For coming to tell me this. You didn't have to."
"No, I did. I can't expect to train someone the same way I was, I get that. And I didn't want to ruin a new friendship, especially with someone who it turns out will become a good friend in the future."
"Yeah, that was a bit weird." Kara told him.
"Believe me, time travel is weird and complicated even for a super genius like me. I still have hard times believing it to be true but…my world has gotten weirder with time. I've just learned to embrace it." He stated. "Something tells me that your world will be getting weirder as well, considering your dealing with aliens. But you're already on the right path. National City is loving Supergirl."
"Yeah, they're really starting to believe me. Was it like this for you when you started?" She wondered.
"Not really. When the Flash and I started, we were obscure. No one really knew we were around because we thought it'd be best if the city didn't know about Metahumans. It wasn't until months later when they learned about us. But…when they did, yeah, it was kind of the same." Naruto took a sip of coffee as Kara looked at him. "The Flash and I didn't do this for public adulation or acceptance. We do what we do for the same reason you do this, to help people. But I've also learned how quickly the people can turn on you when they need someone to blame."
"I've gotten an inclination as to how that works?" Kara asked as Naruto reached over and took a cruller from the box. "Believe it or not, it was my boss who told me I was doing too much. That I needed to take things slow."
"That's the universal truth for superheroes." Naruto added which made Kara look at him funny. "And I know how incredibly ironic it must sound to come from me, but with this kind of thing sometimes slower is better. Just keep doing your good work and don't worry about the rest, it'll come to you."
"How can you be so sure?" Kara asked.
"Because the same thing happened to me. Sometimes we can't solve a problem with brute strength, or in my case super speed. It's hard to accept that there are things out of our control. But also humbling in a way. And believe me, when you stop trying to force a solution or trying to fix it all at once, it'll happen on its own."
"When did you get so sagely?" Kara asked.
"Just time and experience." Naruto replied.
"I sorry you didn't get home, Naruto. But I'm really glad you're here." She told him.
"Me too." Naruto said, grabbing another donut from the box. "And not just because this place has amazing donuts."
Kara chuckled as she reached over to take another one and they cheers their donuts. "It does but wait until I introduce you to sticky buns. You'll love them."
"Looking forward to it." Naruto said as he sipped some coffee.
"So, do you have any stories about your superhero adventures?" Kara asked which made him smile.
"I sure do. Let me start at the beginning and my first time working with the Flash. We were taking on a metahuman my friend Cisco dubbed, Multiplex." Naruto said as he began to tell Kara stories about his superhero exploits and the two new friends bonded over a night of good donuts and interesting stories.
He eventually returned to the DEO after a few hours so Kara could get some sleep before work. He walked back into the DEO base with a box of his leftover donuts. Kara tried to swipe a few but he was a bit quicker than her. He had a cruller in his hand and took a bite when he saw Alex walk up to him.
"Hey, Alex. Donut?" Naruto opened the box, but she shook her head no.
"I'm fine. How's Kara?" Alex asked.
"Kara's good. We had a really good talk. We're back as friends." Naruto replied. "Thanks for letting me to talk to her. I know it wasn't easy to trust someone new like that and I appreciate it."
"Well, you seemed genuine about what you had planned. And even if you are fast, I still would have shot you if you hurt her." Alex said.
"I know. Besides, we exchanged some pretty interesting stories. A few about you." Naruto said as he walked through the base with Alex following him.
"Like what?" Alex asked.
"Oh, nothing. Just some unique phases you went through. The tales of your punk rock phase was very entertaining." Naruto told her causing Alex to blush in embarrassment.
"She's so dead." Alex said. "Well, she's not out of this yet, because she has some skeletons in the closet. Do you know about her Twilight phase?"
"You have Twilight on this earth too? Good grief." Naruto commented when Director Henshaw walked in.
"Sir. What's the news on the Hellgrammite?" Alex asked as she walked up to the main monitors and Naruto followed her.
"We've confirmed six similar attacks on chemical plants across the country over the past year. He's been making his way to National city with enough chemical components to build a weapon of mass destruction." Henshaw said when one of the DEO scientists walked in.
"I'm not so sure about that, sir. The tests we ran on his blood indicated this alien DNA isn't carbon-based like humans. It has a chlorine foundation." The scientists explained.
"That would explain the chlorine foundation in the spike he used to kill the security guards." Naruto added.
"Each of those facilities stored confiscated DDT, which is a chlorine pesticide." Alex said.
"Well, if he's not building a weapon, what does he need DDT for?" Henshaw asked when Naruto put all the information together and came up with a logical conclusion.
"It's his food." Naruto stated and the scientists nodded in agreement.
"He's right. Given his home planet's atmospheric conditions, DDT would be the closest thing on Earth he could find to food." The scientist explained.
"On my earth DDT was banned, and the government's been destroying what's left." Naruto said.
"Same here. His food source is shrinking." Alex said.
"Well, if this thing is hungry, let's buy him some dinner." Henshaw and Alex then came up with a plan to catch this thing.
The next day, Kara went back to work as the reporters and photographers had given their stories and photos to the editors and layout people for Cat's new issues. Supergirl's recent heroics made them busy. Kara was at her desk on her computer when she saw an email show up from Spikyr0 drunner and was confused because it wasn't familiar. She opened the email and saw some text as well as an attachment.
Kara, it's Naruto. I made this email up to send you a message. Don't ask where the username came from, it just popped into my head. I overhead Cat wanting James to give him a picture of me in action. And seeing as how he would never catch a glimpse of me, I figured this would work. Tell him, the first ones free. If Cat want's another, he'll need to work for it.
Kara chuckled as she read the text and then opened up the email attachment to see it was a still image of Naruto running through the city in costume. The photo was taken at the right time, so it captured Naruto in his costume with the flicks of crimson and white lightning trailing around his suit. Kara smiled as she sent the email to James with the message, from a new friend you met. The first one is on the house.
Soon after Kara sent him the email, he gave it to Cat and the first clean image of the Blur made its way onto the Catco website and every single news station in the city and pretty much the entire country. The news was having a field day and Cat was a bit happier but not completely.
After about 2, Naruto stopped by Catco with a small box of donuts and hung out with Kara. Cat didn't seem to mind but she kept sending glances to Kara which made her flush a bit while Naruto was oblivious to the whole thing, more focused on the name that Cat gave him. He wasn't too thrilled with the Blur.
Cat finished talking with an editor as she was checking some messages on her phone when James walked up to her. "Ms. Grant, you wanted to speak to me?" James asked.
"Yes, James. I wanted to see how the hunt for the interview with Supergirl is going." Cat told him.
"Oh, she's doing a little better, so I wasn't really sure if you were still interested in controlling the story."
"Oh, I want a sit down with her before the Planet. Maybe I was beating around the bush too much earlier." Cat said.
"No, you were pretty clear." James replied as they walked into her office and Kara used her super hearing to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"The S is not some who wore it best fashion faux pas. It's a team logo."
"What's she saying?" Naruto asked as Kara looked at her.
"She's saying something about my costume." Kara told him.
"Maybe Supergirl is his sister, maybe she's his girlfriend, but there's definitely a connection. And because you are famously his pal, I have to wonder why you haven't exploited that relationship to get me what I want."
"I have a policy against using my friends for business reasons."
"And I have a policy against losing. Whose policy do you think means more to me? No, I get it. You're an honorable guy. So, I'm asking you to do what's right by me and this company and get me in a room with that girl. You have 24 hours."
"Or?"
"Or the Planet gets their beloved photojournalist back." Cat held his job over his head, threatening to cut him loose unless she got what she want. And this put James in a bind. James left her office as Naruto and Kara watched him leave.
"I'm guessing she just threatened to fire him unless she gets her interview." Naruto remarked and Kara nodded.
"What am I going to do?" Kara asked him. "I said I wouldn't do that interview because Ms. Grant will recognize me, but I can't let James get fired."
"Kiera?!" Cat called out as she strolled out of her office with her bag and phone, paying more attention to it than Kara. "I'm going off for a meeting, I want those rating reports once I get back."
"Yes, Ms. Grant." Kara replied but saw Cat didn't give her a second glance and just left.
"You sure she'll recognize you? She barely recognizes you now." Naruto joked and it managed to elicit a chuckle from her, making her feel a little better. "Kara, whatever you decide to do, I'll support you. Besides, you can fly so do the interview from a distance."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know. When the Flash and I first started, a friend of ours who hadn't learned our secret yet was an aspiring journalist. When she went to interview us, we kept our distance, kept running around her every now and then and changed our voice. Maybe you could do something similar. Put her on a cliff and keep your distance so she can't get close enough to see your entire face." Naruto suggested and Kara actually liked that idea. "And if you feel compelled to push her off said cliff to scare her, then I'd support that too."
Kara chuckled as Naruto took a sip of his coffee, hiding his smirk. "Naruto, superheroes are supposed to be the good guys. That's down right evil." Kara joked while he kept a calm and stoic demeanor.
"I don't know what you're talking about. Just giving some helpful advice and should Cat Grant get scared a bit…I see no harm in that." Naruto replied, giving her a sly wink.
"Thanks, Naruto." Kara said and he smiled back.
"More than happy to help, it's what friends are for. We're a small bunch so we superheroes have to stick together." Naruto told her.
"I guess Kryptonians must think the same way." She remarked. "On Krypton, I was taught that to accept help from people is not a shame, it's an honor. It also a fundamental belief of my family. It's what our S stands for."
"It doesn't stand for Super?" Naruto asked.
"No, just a happy coincidence. But the S also stands for a Kryptonian phrase, our family motto. El mayarah. It means stronger together." Kara told him.
"Stronger together. I like it." Naruto said as Kara smiled. He turned his head and looked at James's office. "Then we should embrace the stronger together motto and you should tell James this. Friends stick together."
Kara smiled and took his advice so Naruto decided to head back to the DEO. He arrived at the base and saw that Director Henshaw and Alex were busy with something. He offered to help but they said it was official DEO business. He got back to work on his projects and began making more high-calorie energy bars in case of an emergency. Alex, Hank, and a bunch of the DEO agents left for a mission. Naruto was on his way back from the bathroom when he saw Director Henshaw and his agents come back from the field with some of them needing serious medical attention.
"Director Henshaw, what the hell happened?" Naruto asked as he saw a lot of the agents being taken to the med bay.
"Our trap for the Hellgrammite didn't work." Henshaw told him when Naruto noticed they were one short.
"Where's Alex?" He asked and Director Henshaw's grimace gave him his answer.
"The Hellgrammite took her." Henshaw replied.
"Kara isn't going to be happy." Naruto remarked and he was right. He called Kara and told her what happened, and she came to the DEO based dressed in her Supergirl costume. Naruto had quickly gotten changed into his Impulse suit as Kara walked up to Henshaw.
"I should've been there. If I was there…if you trusted me instead of putting me through your tests, I could've stopped this." Kara told him.
"Or maybe you'd be captured and dead too." Henshaw pointed out.
"I know to you she's just an agent but to me, she's my family. Does that mean anything to you? Do you have a family?" Kara asked as Henshaw had a somber look on his face.
"I did." Henshaw replied with serious pain in his voice.
"Kara, easy." Naruto walked up to her as she backed up a bit. "Don't worry. We're gonna find Alex and bring her back.
"He's right. We have every satellite and tactical drone up in the air, searching this whole city for her." Henshaw said.
"And now you have me too." Kara added.
"And me." Naruto said as Kara looked at him. "You take the sky, I take the ground."
She nodded as Henshaw handed her an earpiece. Naruto synched her earpiece to the communication system in his mask. He pulled up his mask and goggles as he and Kara super sped out of the base and through the desert in a whoosh of air and blur of lightning. Naruto super sped through the city, going building to building to try and find her as Kara flew above and used her super hearing to listen for Alex.
"Alex. Director Henshaw, I got her! A warehouse at the corner of 78th and Washington. I'm going to get her back!" Supergirl shouted as she kicked her speed into overdrive and flew out to Alex's location.
"Supergirl, wait!" Henshaw shouted.
"I got her!" Impulse shouted as he super sped to her location when he heard a loud boom in the distance and saw Supergirl crawl out of an impact cater so he super sped over and helped her up. "Hey, are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." She replied. They looked back and saw a woman who shared a resemblance to Kara but was older and had a white streak in her hair. She was wearing a black body suit, some kind of tactical military clothing.
"It's been a long time, little one. Look at how much you've grown. So beautiful." The woman said as Kara slowly walked forward.
"You died…when Krypton exploded." Supergirl uttered. "Everyone died…you died, Aunt Astra."
"Oh, this is a bad time for a family reunion." Impulse remarked when he saw Alex laying on the ground.
"Except I wasn't on Krypton when it perished, I was a prisoner aboard Fort Rozz. Did your mother not tell you how she sent me away? Banished her own blood, imprisoned me for speaking the truth while she told only lies!" Astra had a lot of pent up anger in her voice.
"Why did she send you to Fort Rozz?" Supergirl asked.
"For being a hero, for trying to save our world." Astra said as she walked over to Kara.
"I remember so many nights, sitting on your lap and listening as you told me all the names of the stars."
"Then let me educate you again, dear niece. Your alliance is misplaced. Do not stand against me. I let one planet die; I will not do so again." Astra told her as Impulse walked over to Alex when a blast of heat vision hit near his feet. He looked and saw Astra's eyes were glowing. "I would advise you not to do anything stupid, human."
"Leave him alone." Supergirl told her.
"You know, I'm not getting a real friendly vibe from you if you really wanted to help protect this planet like Supergirl. I'm getting a more, I want to take over the planet and kill all the humans, vibe." Impulse remarked. She growled in anger and fired another heat vision blast at him. He raised his hands to block it and the impact sent him flying.
"NO!" Supergirl grabbed Astra and slammed her into the wall.
"It's seems you've made the wrong choice in aligning with the humans instead of your own family. Now you can die with them!" Astra grabbed Supergirl and threw her through the wall as the two Kryptonians got into an epic fight.
Impulse sat up in his impact crater and looked down at his hands at the small crimson and white barrier around them. His speed force armor saved him from any damage of the heat vision. "How about that? I'm getting a better hang of that ability." He said to himself as the speed force armor went away and he ran over to Alex. "Alex!"
"I thought you were dead?"
"I'm not that easy to kill." He hoisted her up and helped her out of the warehouse. He put one of her arms over his shoulder and helped her walk as he contacted Director Henshaw. "Director Henshaw, I have Alex. She's hurt but alive."
"Roger that, we're on our way. Where is Supergirl?" Henshaw asked as part of the roof was blown open. Guess that's what happens when two Kryptonians get into a fight.
"She's tangling with her aunt." He sat her down against the wall and looked at her leg wound. "I'm activating a beacon. You'll find Alex there."
He pressed a few buttons on his wrist computer and Gideon activated a distress beacon that the DEO would be able to track. "We have your beacon. ETA, two minutes!" Henshaw told him as another part of the roof exploded from their fight.
"You might want to pick up the pace." He picked Alex up and super sped her away into another area, so she would be safe. He looked over her wound and was checking the damage when Alex saw the Hellgrammite.
"Look out!" She shouted as the Hellgrammite fired his spikes but Impulse turned and caught the spikes with his gauntlets.
"Nice try." Impulse said as he fired a repulsor blast at the Hellgrammite but it jumped onto the ceiling and scurried away like a bug.
"Go. Go get him and help Kara. I'll be fine." She assured him. He was a little hesitant to leave her by herself, but the DEO would be here soon. He deactivated his right repulsor gauntlet as it shifted back into the small band and put it on Alex's wrist.
"Activate Gauntlet." He said as the gauntlet encased Alex's right hand and forearm. "In case it comes back."
He walked around the warehouse, ready for action as he was waiting for the Hellgrammite to show himself. "Come on out, you ugly excuse for a bug. And let me tell you something, I've fought plenty of ugly things in my superhero career but I've got to say that you are one of the weirdest." He shouted to try and bait it into coming out. The Hellgrammite then jumped down from the roof in an effort to kill Naruto easily, but Naruto looked up and saw him coming down and his powers gave him enough time to act. He rolled out of the way as the Hellgrammite landed on the ground and fired spikes from its wrist at him. Naruto's super speed easily let him dodge as he leaned back like Neo in the Matrix and the spikes flew right over his head.
Naruto fired a repulsor beam which the Hellgrammite flipped to the side to avoid and fired more spikes. Naruto just leaned and moved to the side, dodging the spikes. The spikes were fast but his speed had increased tremendously from when he started. It was a piece of cake. The Hellgrammite jumped forward and extended one of its spikes from its wrists like a blade and swiped at him, but Naruto grabbed his hand, stopping the spike inches from his face. He locked his arm and wrestled the alien forward, applying pressure to dislocate the shoulder but the Hellgrammite bent his arm out of its socket with a sickening crunch and flipped over Naruto. It easily dislocated its shoulder but showed no signs of pain or irritation as it used its arm to put Naruto in a chokehold and edge its spike towards his neck.
"You put up a valiant fight. It's nothing personal. Just every species has a will to survive." It said, inching the spike closer to his target. Naruto vibrated his body, so the Hellgrammite phased right through him and now he was behind it giving him the edge. Naruto kicked out his leg with the distinct sound of bone breaking, then vibrated his hand to channel lightning and zapped him in the back of the neck before knocking him out with a bone breaking spin kick to the back of the head.
"Guess my will to survive was stronger." Naruto took out four instant cement pellets and smashed them on the Hellgrammite's body encasing it in enough concrete to keep it from escaping.
Kara and her aunt traded blows while hovering in the air as the two super-powered Kryptonians tried to gain the edge over the other but Astra has years of combat training and experience over the novice Kara. Kara managed to get a few good hits but Astra had the edge. She grabbed Kara by the neck and slammed her into the ground, making an impact crater.
"You chose for it to end like this instead of allying with your family. Now you can die alone!" She shouted and picked Kara up, ready to throw her into a wall when Astra was blasted by a beam of energy that knocked her away.
Kara looked and saw it was Naruto who blasted her with some kind of energy beam from his gauntlet. "She's not alone!" Naruto shouted as Astra fired her heat vision but he super sped to the side and she missed. She fired another blast but missed so she flew forward and was hell bent on smashing through the human but he managed to avoid her. He then began running around Astra in a circle as she and Kara saw Naruto's impressive speed. Naruto then slowed down and threw out his arm as a bolt of lightning struck Astra and knocked her out of the building.
"How did you do that?" Kara asked as she walked over to him.
"Not all of us have heat vision." He said before grabbing Kara and quickly ducked to avoid Astra's flying tackle. "Go get her."
Kara nodded and charged at her aunt, slamming her into a metal beam and began wailing punch after punch but Astra grabbed Kara's head and smacked it into the beam, disorienting her a bit and then punched her across the face. Kara then remembered some of Naruto's advice during their training session about using an opponent's strength against them. Astra threw out another punch but Kara grabbed her arm and threw her out of the building.
"Awesome! Nice job!" Naruto ran up to her.
"Thanks. Is Alex ok?" Kara asked and Naruto nodded when all of a sudden of gust of cold wind knocked them to the ground and encased their legs and arms in ice.
"I saw on the news you haven't quite mastered that one yet." Astra remarked just as Director Henshaw arrived and aimed his gun at her back.
"Stop! Stay where you are!" Henshaw ordered causing Astra to chuckle. Then in a blur of super speed she grabbed him by the neck and hoisted him up, ready to snap his neck or choke the life out of him.
"You possess no weapon that can harm me." She taunted.
"You are so wrong." Henshaw unsheathed a glowing green knife and it stabbed it straight through her arm. Astra shouted out in pain as she dropped Henshaw and cradled her arm. She looked at Kara for a second before flying away. "Anymore family I should know about?"
Kara broke free of the ice while Naruto vibrated super-fast and melted it off of him. The DEO team secured the area and once everything was squared away, they went back to base. Alex was taken to the med bay and her leg was bandaged up. Naruto watched as she and Kara had a heart-to-heart talk and Kara was showed the AI program of her mother the DEO recovered from her pod…as a reminder of her home.
Line Break xxxxx
The next morning, Kara met up with Naruto and the two got breakfast at Kara's favorite place Noonan's to try the Sticky Buns she mentioned before, and Naruto was open to any chance to eat. Naruto took that first bite and immediately ordered another one for him and Kara. It…was…amazing.
"Oh my god. I can't believe this isn't a thing on my earth." Naruto said as he finished his sticky bun and took a sip of coffee.
"Well, I guess that's one thing my earth has over yours." Kara smirk causing Naruto to chuckle. She finished her Sticky Bun as the waitress came by with fresh Sticky Buns and took their empty plates. "Mm, thank you."
"How can you eat Sticky Buns for breakfast every day and still stay so thin?" The waitress asked.
"I'm an alien." Kara joked causing the waitress to chuckle. She left just as Alex arrived.
"Hey, looks like you're feeling better." He said as she nodded.
"Yeah, that medicine you gave me sure did the trick." Alex said, sitting down with them. "Kara, are you ok? I called you like a bunch of times last night. Where were you?"
"I think I fell asleep last night. Yesterday was a pretty long day." Kara told her, cutting up her Sticky Bun.
"Morning! Hey." They heard as they saw Jimmy walk over with a coffee cup.
"Hey." Kara smiled with a noticeable blush on her face as she fixed her glasses. "Uh, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, this is the only place that makes this really hard to find drink I like, tea." Jimmy joked as Kara laughed while Alex and Naruto exchanged some looks.
"That's really funny." Kara then noticed the looks she was getting. "That's funny. Um, Alex, you remember James Olsen, my friend from work. And James, you remember Naruto."
"How's the covert alien hunting business?" James whispered.
"Not as covert as we would prefer." Alex gave Kara a look but she played innocent.
"I didn't tell him." Kara told her.
"Look, it's ok. I can be trusted with a big secret." James told her.
"Well, I hope you'll extend the same courtesy to my sister." Alex said.
"Always." James replied with a nod as he looked at Kara. "Meet up back at the office?"
"Yeah."
"Great seeing you Alex." James bid the trio goodbye as Kara got back to eating when she noticed the look Alex and Naruto were giving her.
"What?" Kara asked.
"You like Jimmy Olsen." Alex said with a smile.
"Stop it. Um, first of all, he prefers James." Kara corrected as Alex and Naruto fake nodded. "Second, we're just friends. Just friends."
"Sure, and the blush on your face, messing with your glasses, and laughter was to fool us or him?" Naruto asked as Kara kept eating. "Yeah, and this just a friend happened to be at the same place we're eating because there's nowhere else in the entire city he can't go to find tea. He likes you too and you were looking at him like he was a Sticky Bun."
"Naruto's right. And seriously, Kara, you have got to stop telling people who you really are. The less people know about Supergirl, the better." Alex told her and Kara reluctantly agreed when the TV switched to breaking news.
"In a shocker of a news item today Cat Grant, CEO of Catco Media, is reporting that Supergirl and Superman are in fact related." The newscaster spoke with the headline Supergirl and Superman are Cousins in bold.
"Oh boy. Too late for that now." Naruto said as he and Alex looked at Kara. She could feel the headaches coming while Kara ate her Sticky Bun.
Kara soon left and arrived at Catco with Cat's usual breakfast order and saw the only thing people seemed to be talking about or was on TV was the fact that Supergirl and Superman are cousins. She walked over to her desk as Winn gave her a look.
"Ah, interesting choice mentioning that in an interview. Isn't that a little dangerous?" Winn asked.
"I didn't mean to. I got confused and it just popped out." She said as she glanced at Cat. "She…she tricked me. She's like a villain. She's like a super interviewing villain."
"That is literally the most boring power ever." Winn told her.
"Kerah!" Cat called as Kara sighed and walked into Cat's office with her coffee and muffin.
"Morning, Ms. Grant." Kara walked over and placed her coffee down at her desk.
"It's a big day for journalism." Cat turned around in her chair to face her. "The Daily Planet can suck it. I scooped them."
"Yes, I…I heard. You told everyone that Supergirl and Superman are cousins. Do you think maybe she might've kind of wanted that on the down low?" Kara wondered.
"Bulletproof." Cat stated causing Kara to straighten.
"Uh, are you asked me if I'm bullet…" "Bulletproof coffee. It's made from unsalted grass-fed butter with an extract of coconut oil that improved brain energy. I will need a cup of it every hour. Crappy coffee has toxins in it that will rob me of my creativity and my vigor. I am going to need both…" Cat took her muffin and threw it away in the garbage. "…if I am going to write a kick-ass expose on Supergirl."
"You're writing it? Yourself?" Kara was not expecting to hear that.
"I'm a writer. Well, it's like riding a bike, or severe childhood trauma. You never really lose it. And I must be pretty decent at it because…" Cat gestured around her to the stack of monitors on the wall and her accomplishments. "We will be publishing a special issue of our monthly magazine, the day after tomorrow. It is going to make that Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair look like a Penny Saver pullout. We need a big party to launch it. Throw something together…uh, 1,000 guests. Rent out a museum or something."
"Um…" "And move Dave out there to another desk. I find his hair distracting." Cat said as Kara looked at poor Dave and his curly red hair. She got to work on the event and began compiling everything she would need to get it done in two days. A little later, she visited the DEO where Director Henshaw was not happy about the news of her and Superman's relationship.
"Have you lost your mind? What were you thinking giving interviews?"
"I wouldn't say it was an interview, exactly. It was more of a private conversation that's being published." Kara replied.
"What's next? A book deal? A reality show? Keeping up with the Kryptonians?" Henshaw asked rhetorically as he walked over to the monitors to get to work, in a very foul mood as Alex and Naruto walked over.
"Wow, he is pissed. Although, full honesty, I would watch a Kryptonian reality show." Naruto said as Kara and Alex looked at him funny. "What? It'd be ten-times more interesting than anything on TV now."
"Kara, why did you do that interview?" Alex wondered, wanting to genuinely know why she did it and expose herself.
"At first, I did it for James." Kara replied as Alex sighed.
"Of course, you did."
"But I also did it for me. I'm still trying to figure out what Supergirl means. Guess I just thought talking to Ms. Grant would give me some perspective." Kara said.
"Everyone wonders who they are at some point in their lives. You're gonna figure it out, Kara. You always have." Alex told her.
"She's right. And if I can offer a little advice as someone with a partner who has pretty much the same abilities…don't dwell on what makes you the same or that you're constantly compared to each other. Focus on what makes you unique." Naruto suggested and Kara smiled. "And maybe get a publicist. That would have helped me a lot when I first started out."
Kara and Alex chuckled when they heard an alarm go off. "Sir, we have a code grey." Vazquez reported, bringing it up on the monitors. "It's coming from the NCH."
She brought up satellite images and it was an accident on the highway. "Looks like a multiple car collision." Alex said.
"Highway Patrol officers and medical personnel are enroute. No sign of alien activity. We're clear." Vazquez reported as Kara tapped Naruto on the shoulder and he nodded.
"Run a thermal scan to be sure. And Ms. Danvers, the next time you feel compelled to talk to the press…" Henshaw stopped himself when he saw Kara and Naruto were gone. He looked at Alex who just shrugged.
"She's excited. It's her first pile-up." Alex replied with a smirk.
Supergirl and Impulse made their way from the DEO base in the desert to highway where the accident was. Supergirl flew through the air while Impulse super sped on the ground and they heard the wail of sirens and saw the flashing of lights in the distance. They soon arrived on the highway and saw the aftermath of the car collision. Impulse ran over to some cars to help the drivers and passengers out while Supergirl landed near a tipped-over bus and helped the driver out. She flew the driver out and placed her down on a gurney and the EMTs looked her over. The driver thanked Supergirl when she was blasted by some kind of energy blast all of a sudden.
She rolled on the ground as the crowd ran away in fear. Impulse looked over and saw a figure in metal armor land on the highway and saw the glowing energy core on the chest armor. Impulse put on his goggles and activated its scanner. "Gideon, scan the subject."
"Scan commencing." She replied as his goggles analyzed the armor and the energy core.
"Who are you?!" Supergirl questioned.
"I'm just a ghost." The man replied.
"What do you want?" Supergirl asked and the man took a few steps forward.
"I want the Man of Steel to suffer. I want him to know what it feels like to lose everything…starting with you." He raised his arm and fired an energy blast from his gauntlet and the impact knocked Supergirl into a car.
Impulse helped the remaining trapped civilians out of the cars and escorted them to a safe distance. "Get to safety! Go!" He shouted as they ran away to nearby police officers who ushered them to safety. He turned to see Supergirl fighting their mystery assailant. She kicked him back, sending him skidding across the ground but he quickly recovered and fired more energy bolts at her and knocked her back.
He raised his gauntlets to fire a barrage of energy bolts when he was hit with a small vial and encased in a blob of cement, restricting his movement. Impulse rushed over and helped Supergirl back to her feet. "Hey, are you ok?" He asked as she nodded, groaning in pain a bit.
"This guy really packs a punch." She said, rubbing her stomach. Those energy blasts actually hurt and she was supposed to be invulnerable to pretty much any kind of man-made weapon. Their attacker ripped himself free of the concrete and fired another blast at the two heroes but Impulse and Supergirl evaded it. Impulse and Supergirl raced around the attacker in a blur of lightning and wind to disorient and distract him. The lightning/super blur circle around the attacker began to constrict and heavy punches began to hit him all over. A punch to the back, the arm, the leg, the face and then repeat, repeat, and repeat. The attacker growled in anger as he threw out his arms to try and hit Supergirl and the mystery speedster but hit nothing but air. He kept getting punched so he began firing energy blast after energy blast with the same result.
Supergirl and Impulse then stopped in front of their attacker and punched him in the chest, sending him crashing into a parked car. The attacker managed to get back to his feet and tried to fire an energy blast from his gauntlets but the energy core on his chest was damaged and the energy feedback was preventing his gauntlets from working. The attacker glared at Supergirl before flying away as fast as he could.
"The bad guys always see to fly away during the first fight." Impulse commented. With their mysterious attacker gone, Supergirl and Impulse returned to the DEO where Director Henshaw had some information on the individual.
"Reactron. At least that's what the Daily Planet colorfully dubbed him when he showed up in Metropolis a few years back." Henshaw told them as the monitors showed information on Reactron including his armor, weapons, and previous attacks.
"Reactron, that's kind of a stupid name. Who named him that?" Kara asked.
"Jimmy Olsen." Henshaw replied.
"Oh." Kara really wished she didn't say that as Naruto and Alex chuckled.
"So, who is Reactron under that mask?" Naruto asked.
"Unknown. He remains at large after a string of very public fights with Superman. Neither of them ever came out on top and no one knows why he's so obsessed with killing Superman." Henshaw explained. Naruto looked over the data on the weapons and saw that Reactron used nuclear energy as his power source.
"So, what's the plan?" Kara asked as Henshaw gave her a look. "How do we stop him?"
"We don't." Henshaw told her.
"So, what are you saying? We just sit back and do nothing?" Kara asked.
"Reactron, whoever he is, is human which means this case falls outside the DEO's jurisdiction." Henshaw explained while Kara thought the whole thing sounded stupid.
"This guy flies around and shoots nuclear fireballs. How is that not extra-normal?"
"He's using advanced bio-medical tech. Man-made tech." Alex explained.
"I can't risk exposing this organization every time some human criminal shows up at National City." Henshaw told her as he walked over to file some paperwork.
"And I just can't let this man run wild." Kara said.
"Call your cousin. Superman fights for Truth, Justice, and the American way. Last time I checked, National City was in America." Henshaw told her, putting the issue to bed. He left to file the paperwork as Naruto walked over to Kara.
"Hey, you'll find the guy, Kara. Why don't you head back to Catco and I'll figure out a lead to find him." Naruto suggested.
"Thanks, Naruto." Kara smiled and super sped back to National City.
"Do you mind if I use your lab?" Naruto asked as Alex shrugged.
"By all means. Do you know what you're doing?" Alex asked and he smiled.
"Oh, of course. Finding another supervillain is just another day at the office." Naruto said as he super sped to the lab and got to work on finding Reactron.
Kara returned to Catco and got to work on organizing the party that Ms. Grant wanted for the release of her Supergirl issue. Cat Grant was busy working on her expose but some weird buzzing noise was distracting her. Kara walked into Cat's office with a clipboard of items she needed to go through with Ms. Grant for her party.
"Ms. Grant." Kara called out and saw that Cat looked like she was staring up at the ceiling. "I'm putting together the finishing touches on that party and I need your ok on…"
"Shh…do you hear that?" Cat asked as Kara looked up at the ceiling and didn't hear anything.
"Uh, no." Kara replied.
"You don't hear that loud, high pitched, incessant humming coming from the vents that is making it impossible for me to think straight, let alone string together one coherent sentence?" Cat asked, getting extremely frustrated.
"I have pretty good ears and I don't hear anything." Kara replied.
"Well, get maintenance to look into it because it's driving me crazy." Cat ordered as she tried to get back to work.
"Sure thing, I'll get them right on it." Kara added that to her to-do list. "I just need you to approve the appetizers for tomorrow."
"Kerah, I am very proud of the fact that in my many years of being a CEO I have never thrown a phone at an assistant. I would very much like to keep that record intact." Cat threatened.
"I'll take care of it." Kara quickly left Cat's office and felt like she had just had another fight with Reactron.
"She's pretty tense working on that article, huh?" James asked. "She always gets like this when she's writing?"
"People have been known to schedule their vacations around it." Kara told him. James chuckled at the joke when they heard Winn Psst at them like he was secretly trying to get their attention. "Why are you doing that? We're standing right here."
"Follow me and act natural." He told the two of them. Winn hurried to the elevator like he was in a rush while James and Kara were as calm as can be. They took the elevator to another floor and there were luckily no people around.
"Where are you taking us?" Kara asked.
"To your new office." Winn replied.
"I think Ms. Grant prefers me to be within yelling distance." Kara told him.
"Oh, no. Not for that job. For our other job. This used to be Ed Flaherty's office from Actuaries but after he died of a heart attack behind his desk nobody wants it which makes it perfect for our needs." Winn said, unlocking the door and letting them in to see a makeshift superhero lair with an expensive computer set up. "Now, we can't just crowd around your desk every time we want to talk Supergirl stuff so I loaded this office up with some state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line tech."
"Winn, I can't believe you did all this for me." Kara said, amazed and grateful for what he did.
"Um, believe it." Winn took his seat at the main computer. "Okay, so our first mission, Supergirl vs. Reactron."
"Ok, so his true identity remains a mystery. Right? We know Superman has fought him multiple times over the years." Winn said and Kara nodded.
"I know, I was there." James said.
"How could I forget? Anyway, he shoots these highly concentrated—Bursts of nuclear energy—from his gauntlets. Uh, his chest plate provides an increase in strength—and flight." Winn was getting a little ticked off that James kept interrupting him but kept moving forward. "Now, I've written an algorithm that will sweep the city for any variable changes in radiation and maybe we can use this to find him."
"And then what?" James wondered.
"And then Kara goes all Supergirl on him." Winn replied, confident that Kara could handle this and she felt the same way while James was more hesitant. He pulled her to the side to talk.
"Kara, you might consider calling your cousin on this one." He suggested. "I've seen what Reactron can do."
"James, if I call for help now, I'm done. We're done. Every villain out there will think of National City as an easy target." Kara told him.
"He nearly killed Clark once." James warned her.
"Clark?" Winn asked, turning to the two of them. Kara sighed and James just shrugged his shoulders. "Clark…Clark Kent is Superman?"
James cleared his throat and turned his attention to Kara. "I'm just trying to keep you safe."
"And yes, I appreciate that but of all the things the S stands for, safety is not one of them." Kara said to him.
"Clark Kent is Superman." Winn said, still freaking out about learning that.
"Winn." Kara said, getting him to stop. "I'm…I'm still trying to figure out what being Supergirl means. Who I am? And now I know. I'm not Superman's cousin, I'm Supergirl. And if I'm going to be defined it' going to be by my victories and my losses, and no one else's."
"I guess stubbornness runs in the family." James added.
Line Break xxxxx
They hadn't found Reactron yet but he was keeping busy. He had kidnapped some local tech genius Maxwell Lord and it's been about 24 hours since then with no clear sign of where he is. Kara feels responsible for that and considering she's been busy with helping get the release party set up for Ms. Grant, she had a lot on her plate. She was watching the news about Maxwell Lord while juggling all the party planning.
"Yes, yes, I'm still here. Yes, Ms. Grant wants all the hostesses dressed as Supergirl. Right, red and blue with the S. Thank you." She hung up and breathed a sigh of relief that was over but had bigger problems.
"Hey, this isn't on you, Kara." Winn told her.
"I have to find this man. How am I supposed to do that?" Kara asked.
"With some help from a friend." They heard and saw Naruto walk over to them. "Do you have someplace we can talk away from prying eyes?"
Kara glanced over at Winn who smiled. "Do we ever."
Winn, James, and Kara escorted Naruto to their little secret room. "Not bad." Naruto said, sitting down at the computer and plugging his phone in to upload the data he found. "After our fight on the highway, I did some digging and I think I found out who Reactron is. My suit analyzed the energy Reactron used and the power source came back as Thorium-232. There's only one place on this earth where Throium-232 was used as nuclear fuel. And that was at the Bakerline Nuclear Power Station."
"I remember this. Terrorists tried to start a full-on meltdown like five years ago." Winn said.
"But then Superman stopped them." James added.
"From the reports, he managed to prevent the core from going into overload and saved millions of people except for two. There were two reactor engineers who were killed when the facility was flooded with radiation. A married couple, Ben and Alyssa Krull." Naruto said, bringing up their pictures and then isolated Ben Krull before digitally adding in Reactron's mask and it was him.
"Ben Krull is Reactron." Kara said.
"Yeah. I don't know but he managed to survive the radiation exposure. One in a million lucky shot." Naruto told her.
"That's why he hates my cousin. He blames him for the death of his wife." Kara said.
"But Superman still managed to prevent an American Chernobyl." James pointed out.
"When you lose a loved one, vengeance narrows your mind to the point where nothing else matters." Naruto told him, speaking from personal experience. "I've got a tracking algorithm set up using the DEO satellites that'll scan the city. Hopefully, it'll lead us to Krull. When we find him, I got your back Kara."
"Thanks, Naruto." Kara told him. "I got to get back to work. Let me know when you find him."
Kara rushed out because she had to finish up the work for Ms. Grant's party. "She seems to be…carrying a lot today. Is she all right?" Naruto asked.
"She's just overloaded. Ms. Grant put a lot on her to set up a party for a new issue today." James said.
"Geez. She must have a lot on her plate." Naruto replied when he got an idea. "Winn, do you think you can get him a copy of the things she needs to get done today?"
"Yeah, sure. But why?" He asked and Naruto shrugged.
"Well, I figured that Kara Danvers could use some super powered help in her regular life and I've been known to be a fast worker." Naruto said. Winn smiled and quickly sent him a list. He looked it over and started ticking off items on the list with his super speed with Kara being none the wiser. Speaking of Kara, she was upstairs having just finished proof-reading Ms. Grant's article and walked into her office to talk to her.
Ms. Grant was on her couch having lunch when she saw Kara walk in with her article. "I finished proofing the Supergirl article." Kara said.
"Please begin my compliments." Cat remarked with a smile as Kara struggled how to word what she was going to say.
"Well, uh the writing is…beautiful. Lyrical. It's the kind of writing they'd make you read in journalism school." Kara complimented.
"Um, I detected a slight uptick in your voice which suggests a hesitation, a vacillation, and maybe an ambivalence?" Cat asked.
"Isn't the tone kind of…" Kara saw how Cat was looking at her so she just decided to say it. "…a little nasty? Uh, I mean, the headline. Um, okay: Millennial Falcon. Every Generation Gets the Superhero it Deserves. Supergirl didn't tell you how old she is. How do you know she's a millennial?"
"Well, if she's not then I want the name of her surgeon." Cat said, drinking her glass of champagne.
"What about this passage? Um…Supergirl embodies the worst traits of her generation. The earnestness without purpose, the unshakable belief that she has a right to be heard even when she has nothing to say." Kara read as Cat mouthed the sentence.
"That is a magnificent point." Cat told her.
"I transcribed your interview. She's not like this. You've taken her out of context." Kara said.
"I have given her context. I hate to break it to you, but the world is tough. What is she going to do when she has to face a real threat? Oh, I know, she'll call her cousin. Just like every other millennial who calls Mommy and Daddy the second things don't go their way." Cat told her.
"She won't do that." Kara stated.
"How do you know that?" Cat questioned.
"I think…I think maybe what she's trying to say…is that…when people are scared or hurt or in danger, they think of Superman. But that it's ok to think of her too, and not just as some consolation prize. She is every bit the hero he is. She just needs the chance to prove it." Kara explained.
"Well, I guess we'll find out." Cat replied when the door opened and James walked in.
"Sorry to interrupt, Kara it's the florist." James said and she gave him a confused look. "Uh, for the party."
"Right. I should probably handle that." Kara left the office and once they were clear of Cat's door they could talk.
"Naruto's algorithm found Krull. It picked up at a junkyard 60 miles from here." He said, giving her the address.
"All right, tell Ms. Grant I'm putting the finishing touches on her party." Kara told him, walking to the door but James stopped her.
"Kara, wait. Just get Lord out of there. You don't have to take on Krull." He told her.
"Krull is not some crazed alien. He's a human being who has been hurt enough. That's something my cousin never knew. And that's why I'm going to talk to him, the way I would want someone to talk to me." Kara replied.
"And if he doesn't want to talk?" James asked.
"Then I'll punch him real hard until he falls down. That always seems to work." Kara said, leaving in a hurry and quickly flying to the junkyard. James rushed over to the spar room Naruto and Winn were using to finish up the last things for Ms. Grant's party.
"James, what's wrong?" Naruto asked.
"Your algorithm found Krull. Kara's on her way over there now." He told him.
"All right, I got her back." Naruto said, putting his stuff down and heading to the door when James stopped him.
"Naruto, be careful. Reactron is not to be messed with." James warned him.
"Don't worry, I got the girl of steel as backup." Naruto said, super speeding away with no one the wiser. James was still worried so he flipped opened his watch to reveal a high-tech beacon with the Super S symbol. He pressed it and hoped backup would show up in time.
Supergirl arrived at the junkyard and freed Lord only for Reactron to surprise attack her. Lord ran for it just as Impulse arrived. "Where's Supergirl?" He asked.
"Over there. Reactron's with her." Lord told him. Impulse nodded and grabbed Lord by the shoulder.
"Keep your head still." He super sped away with Lord in tow and arrived at the police station where he promptly threw up. "Sorry, dude."
Impulse super sped away and arrived at the junkyard to see Reactron zapping Supergirl with nuclear energy blasts so he quickly super sped forward and threw a lightning bolt at him. The bolt knocked Reactron away so Impulse could look over Supergirl.
"Supergirl." He checked her over and saw she was pretty hurt, fading in and out of consciousness. Reactron got back up and fired a nuclear energy bolt at Impulse when Superman arrived and shielded him. Superman grit his teeth but covered the speedster from the energy. Impulse got back up and super spun his arms in circles and unleashed wind funnels, sending Reactron back but he dug his boots into the ground and skid to a stop. Superman breathed in and used his super breath to add onto the wind funnel and it sent Reactron flying away like a homerun baseball.
Naruto knelt to check on Kara and found that she was unconscious but breathing. Probably from the pain of the fight. "Is she ok?" Superman asked.
"Yeah, Kara's fine. Just knocked out." Naruto replied, standing up and getting his first good look at Superman. "So, you're the Man of Steel?"
"That I am. Superman, it's nice to meet you." Superman shook his hand and Naruto shook it back. "Seeing as how you called her Kara, you know her?"
"Yeah, we're friends. I'm Naruto. So, no one really recognizes Clark Kent as Superman just because of the glasses?" Naruto asked and Superman was confused as to how he knew. "Wasn't that hard to figure out and James might have slipped up and told someone who accidently told me. Don't worry, secret is safe with me."
"Thanks. So, you're the so-called Blur?" Clark asked causing Naruto to groan.
"Ugh, I hate that it's sticking." Naruto said, picking up Kara bridle style.
"Believe me, I know. It's what they first called me when I started." Clark told him and the two super sped back to Kara's apartment in National City. Naruto put her on the couch and contacted Alex to come and look her over.
"Thanks for the backup. How did you even know to show up?" Naruto wondered.
"Jimmy hit his signal watch and told me when I arrived. I'm kind of glad that I did because Reactron is no joke." Clark said.
"Yeah, he is. Kara's really determined to take him down by herself. I think the constant comparisons to you are getting to her." Naruto said as Clark looked at him. "I went through something similar on my earth and know the face. My partner has the exact same powers I do and I'm considered the sidekick. It's not fun."
"Guess I didn't realize being Superman's cousin had its downside." Clark commented.
"Don't take it personally, Clark. It's just been a bad couple of days for her. I know she's still happy to be your cousin." Naruto assured him and Clark smiled when he got an alert on his phone about some issue in the South Pacific. "It's all right, go. I'll watch over her until Alex gets here."
"Thanks. And tell Kara I'm glad she's ok." Clark bid him farewell and super sped away.
Alex arrived soon after and looked Kara over. She was hurt but nothing too serious. She just needed time to heal. James arrived too, worried about her but happy that she was alive. Naruto used a towel to wipe off some of the dirt on her face and some bruises when he saw her wake up.
"Whoa, take it easy Kara." Naruto told her as she sat up in a hurry.
"How long was I out?" She asked and saw James and Alex rush over.
"Just a few hours. I looked you over and your fine. You're already healing." Alex assured her.
"I was fighting Krull…my cousin, where is he?" Kara asked.
"He had to go. Volcanic eruption in the South Pacific." Naruto told her.
"Don't worry, Lord is safe." James added.
"I don't understand. How did he even know I was fighting Krull?" Kara asked, looking at Alex and Naruto who glanced at James. "You called him.
"Kara, he gave me this a long time ago." James opened his up his watch to reveal the beacon that contacted Superman. "If I ever got in trouble, I could contact him."
"But you weren't in trouble. When did you even call him? The second I left?" She asked.
"Kara, I made a promise to your cousin. If anything, ever happened to you—" "My cousin didn't have a get out of jam free card when he first started. Neither should I." Kara interrupted him, feeling insulted that he had to call her cousin to save him. "It feels like you don't believe in me."
"Of course, I believe in you. I wouldn't even be here if I didn't believe in you." James told her.
"Maybe you shouldn't be here at all." Kara told him. James took a moment and stood up, walking to the door but stopped to say one last thing.
"You know what, Kara? I'm sorry that you're mad at me. But I'm not sorry that you're still alive." James said before leaving.
Kara sighed in exhaustion and stifled a sniffle before standing up and walking to the kitchen. "He was just trying to protect you." Alex told her.
"I know, I know. It's just…it wasn't supposed to be this way. This is the reason my mother and father sent me to earth." Kara said.
"They wanted you to live, Kara." Alex said to her.
"No, it's more than that. I was supposed to be the one saving him, not the other way around. How am I supposed to really become a hero if Superman has to keep saving me?" Kara asked, upset that she was failing at the whole superhero thing.
"Kara…your story is literally just beginning and it's yours, not his. Sure, you'll stumble a bit but the only way this story stops being yours is if you let it. Now I know we've only known each other for a week but I know that you won't let that happen. Supergirl is going to soar above Superman soon, I know it and so does Alex." Naruto assured her. Kara breathed a tiny sigh of comfort only to realize what she needed to do.
"Oh, god! I…I have to be at Cat's party, like now. Like 10 minutes ago, now. I don't have my dress." Kara said only for Alex to walk over to the table and grab a garment bag.
"Yes, I figured you would not have the time, so I borrowed one from the DEO closet. Um, not that you really need it, but…it is bulletproof." Alex said as Kara smiled.
Naruto and Alex left so Kara could get ready. "Reactron's still a problem that Kara's gonna need to deal with." Naruto told her.
"I know. I'm gonna head to the DEO and see what I can find out. Hopefully, I can find something that'll help her." Alex replied.
"Nice, but do you think you have something in the DEO closet my size?" Naruto asked as Alex gave him a confused look. "I could do with a little party before I head back home."
"I'll see what we have." Alex replied.
Kara got cleaned up and put on a little makeup before getting dressed and heading to the museum that was holding Ms. Grant's launch party. She walked in wearing a green Guinevere Slip Dress by Noam Hanoch, Meteor ear jacket earrings and finished it off with her hair done in a bun and a small black clutch purse. She walked in to see everything with the event seemed to be in order which was good. She took a deep breath and walked in to see it was amazingly decorated, the servers were wearing Supergirl outfits and cover images of the magazine were set up around the room. Kara adjusted her glasses and walked in, breathing a sigh of relief that no one did a double take at her and think she looked like Supergirl. Cat saw Kara enter and walked over to give her a piece of her mind.
Kara said Ms. Grant and began to think of what to say. "Oh, um…" "You don't fool me. You're late. I noticed because there was no one mumbling and shuffling three paces behind me." Cat said.
"I'm sorry." Kara apologized.
"Where are the magazine?" Cat asked as Kara stammered. "The paper ones? The ones that can be framed?"
"Right, the magazine." Kara said, trying to figure out what to say when a magazine was held out in front of her and given to Ms. Grant.
"Do you mean these?" She heard and turned to see Naruto dressed up in a very smooth black two-piece fancy suit for the event that made him look very charming and handsome. Like if James Bond was a Japanese-American Speedster and standing right there. "They're set up at various tables around the event. Kara is just a little foggy because she was up all night autographing the magazines with the author's name and a small little blurb about the issue and the event."
"Ah. It's as if I thought of it myself, Kerah." Cat said before looking at Naruto. "I see you cleaned up very nicely but have done nothing about your whiskers and your unnaturally spiky hair."
Kara stifled a chuckle while Naruto just smirked. "Well, I like to think they give me a certain charm. Besides, with all the people in the world you need to stand out a little bit." He replied.
"Indeed. Well, Kerah, I don't think I'll be needing you for the night so enjoy yourself." Cat said before leaving.
Naruto watched her leave and shrugged. "I do believe that was a compliment from her."
"Oh my god, Naruto you saved my butt. How did you even know about that or get it done in time?" She asked.
"I had Winn forward me a list of what Cat needed done for the party. With everything going on, I thought I'd lend a hand. Just another day of work." Naruto told her and she smiled.
"Still, I owe you my life. I don't know how I'm gonna repay you." Kara said as Naruto smirked.
"Well, you could take care of that now?" Naruto held out his hand. "How about a dance with the prettiest woman in the room?"
"Sure." Kara chuckled and blushed as she took Naruto's hand and the two made their way to the dance floor. Naruto held Kara's hand while she placed her hand on his shoulder and he put his hand on her waist. The two danced together enjoying the night and having some fun. Naruto spun her around before pulling her close and doing a small dip causing her to chuckle before he pulled her back up. "Where did you learn to dance?"
"I picked up a thing or two from movies and I'm good on my feet." Naruto joked, spinning her around once more. "If we had some tango music then we could show everyone up here."
"Please god now. I may be super, but this is as far as I can go with dancing." Kara replied causing him to chuckle.
"Do you mind if I cut in?" They heard and saw James had walked up to them.
"It's ok, Naruto." Kara told him so he nodded.
"All right. It's time for me to scope out the buffet anyways." Naruto said, walking away so Kara and James could dance and talk out whatever problems they had.
Unfortunately, the party was interrupted soon after with Reactron smashing through the roof and landing in the middle of the museum. "This guy doesn't take a break, does he?" Naruto said to himself before ducking somewhere without camera footage and opened up his shirt to reveal his suit underneath like Supergirl.
"Where is Supergirl?!" Reactron shouted in anger as all the partygoers backed away in fear. Reactron fired an energy bolt at one of the magazine posters, causing it to burst into flames. Kara looked around and with all the people around she couldn't do anything Supergirl related for risk of being seen. People began to rush to exits and Reactron saw Maxwell Lord and made his way over to kill him when something slammed into him from behind and knocked him into the wall.
Everyone looked to see it was the mysterious blur had arrived. Impulse looked at Kara and began whispering at her which she picked up with her super hearing. "I'm gonna get him outside. Get changed and kick his ass." He whispered and she nodded.
"You know, I got to say when it comes to supervillains you are very persistent." Impulse said. "I'm sorry about what happened to you, but you are going to jail to answer for all your crimes."
"I'm sure one day I will…but you won't live to see it." He replied and fired a blast at him only for Impulse to duck. He was lucky it hit the wall, but he couldn't fight in here and risk a bystander getting hit.
"You know, Superman was right. You aren't that much of a challenge." Impulse quipped, seeing how angry that made Reactron. "Oh yeah, I'm friends with Superman and Supergirl. And if you can't hit me than what hope do you have against them."
He quickly ran outside so Reactron jumped through the roof and flew outside to kill him. Reactron flew in the air and fired at him from above but he kept missing. Then Supergirl blindsided him and they tumbled to the ground. He blasted her away and kept firing his energy blasts only for Kara to block it with her hand. She grit her teeth in pain but when Krull got close she ripped his energy core out with the lead she encased in her hand. He dropped to the ground, defeated and unable to use his suit with the energy core gone. Supergirl breathed a sigh of relief as Naruto super sped next to her.
"Told you your story was just beginning." Naruto said as she smiled.
Reactron was taken into police custody and was going to be transferred back to Metropolis. Given that pretty much all of his crimes dealt with him trying to kill Superman and all the collateral damage he caused it was no surprise there, but the National City DA would add to those charges.
After he was taken, Kara returned to the DEO base and they watched the news coverage on Reactron's arrest. Kara smiled in joy and pride at her accomplishment. She was able to take Reactron down, something that Superman was never able to do.
"Thank you for your help. Both of you." Supergirl said to Alex and Director Henshaw.
"Something tells me this isn't the last non-alien you'll be taking on. And since the threat of Federal Prison doesn't stop your sister from disobeying my orders, I guess in the future we'll just have to help Supergirl again." Henshaw stated.
"Glad to know this night finished on a happy ending." They heard as Naruto walked up to them with a plate of food from the party. He was dressed in his Impulse suit and had his pack slung over his back.
"Are you going somewhere?" Henshaw questioned.
"Well, as much fun as being here has been and the team up of the Multiverse's finest, it's about time I try to head home." Naruto explained.
"Now? But there's still so much we haven't done yet? We were supposed to head to that gelato place I told you about." Kara pointed out.
"True and while I do love ice-cream and hanging out with you Kara…I've got my own world to get back to. But…I shall not leave you empty handed because I've made gifts. Follow me, please." Naruto led them back to the lab he had been working out of the past couple of days and once they walked in, they saw it was filled with boxes and crates. "Tadaa!"
"Wow. That's a lot of boxes." Alex commented.
"What is all this stuff?" Kara asked, opening one of them to see it was filled with a bunch of items she had no context to understand.
"My contribution to the DEO to keep your agents and this planet safe. I told you I'd pay you back for allowing me to stay here and eating your entire food stores. Sorry about that." Naruto shrugged which made Kara and Alex chuckle. "But I believe I have made up for it. While I didn't build an Arc reactor, I have made enough weapons, gadgets, devices, and blueprints for anything that the DEO could possibly need. First things first."
Naruto took out a form fitting light vest and handed it to Alex. "What is this?" She asked.
"That is STAR labs body armor. Thin, form fitting, able to fit under regular clothes and capable of stopping and absorbing the impact of high-caliber rounds and impacts. My suit's made up of a more advance version of the same technology but this stuff is powerful enough to stop the impact of armor-piercing rounds and is tear resistant." Naruto placed it on a spare mannequin and took out a knife. "Observe."
He stabbed the armor and the armor absorbed the impact and didn't break. "Wow." Kara was impressed at what she saw. Granted she was bullet and knife proof but this stuff was easily more powerful than anything on their planet.
"I've also left some blueprints and data that will allow you to design undercover options. In Central City, STAR labs has designed a variant of the armor that can be stitched into the layers of clothing." Naruto explained. "This stuff will help keep your agents safe."
"Thank you." Director Henshaw said as he looked over the armor. "What else did you make?"
"Well, I built some ICER guns for you to use for non-lethal options when necessary and they'll help you prevent civilian casualties. Along with that are some enhanced explosives, flash bangs, gas grenades, those polyurethane foam pellets in grenade form, along with some new night-vision, thermal, and backscatter vision goggles. Plus, some new programs and general upgrades to your entire system." Naruto explained. "I like to keep busy."
"Clearly." Henshaw replied.
"The next time I visit, I'll bring some new stuff." Naruto promised.
"There'll be a next time?" Alex asked.
"Sure. Superheroes have to stick together and I still have to try that Gelato place." Naruto walked over to one of the boxes and took out a smaller black box. He opened it so Kara, Alex, and Director Henshaw could see what was inside and it was a high-tech black and silver watch. The only difference between it and a regular watch was that it didn't have a clockface on it. Instead, it had his Impulse lightning bolt symbol over the STAR labs insignia. "But I've saved the best for last."
"What is it?" Kara asked.
"The Extra-dimensional-communication-hardware device. I like to call it the E.C.H.O. I added the O at the end to make a snappy name." Naruto joked causing Alex and Kara to chuckle. "I was a little inspired by the watch your cousin gave Jimmy. It's a multiversal communications device. If something happens and you need help, just hit that symbol and it'll let me know."
"How did you manage that?" Henshaw was curious as he took the watch and looked it over before handing it to Alex for her to see.
"My multidimensional theorem equation." Naruto took out his phone to show them a complex mathematical/scientific physics/engineering equation. "After I wound up on another earth, I began devising a way to try and communicate between worlds. After a lot of studying, observing, and calculations we tested, we managed to arrive at the equation. The same equation is transmitting my vitals back to my allies on Earth-2."
"So even though we're on another earth, this thing will send a signal all the way to your earth?" Alex asked. "That doesn't seem possible."
"Not impossible, just…difficult." Naruto remarked causing Kara to chuckle. "If you guys ever need help or just want to hang out, let me know. Thanks again for letting me stay here. It was fun."
"Yeah, it was." Alex gave him a hug and when they separated, he shook hands with Director Henshaw.
"It was a pleasure."
"The pleasure was mine, Director Henshaw." Naruto replied as he and Kara shared a hug. "It's been fun, Kara."
"That it has. I'm still a little sad you can't stay longer but hopefully we'll see each other again." Kara said.
"Well, if I've learnt anything doing this job is that heroes tend to find their way to one another. Who knows, maybe we'll have another team up soon." Naruto replied as they walked to the exit of the DEO facility and stepped out into the dessert. "So, before I leave, I figured we could commemorate our friendship with a photo. What do you say, a picture in front of Catco?"
"Sure thing." Kara chuckled as the two super-sped into the city and appeared in the alley where they got dressed back in their civilian clothes. They managed to get a friendly bystander to take their photo. Naruto and Kara shared a one-arm hug with big smiles on their face in front of the Catco building just like the future photo Gideon showed them. They looked and it was a nice picture, almost exactly the same as the one Gideon showed them except, they were younger.
"I'm getting a weird sense of Deja vu, are you?" Naruto joked causing Kara to laugh.
"It's been a lot of fun, Naruto. When you make it back to your earth, if you ever need help just let me know and I'll be there to help." She promised.
"Likewise. And until we meet again, Kara Danvers let me give you a piece of advice." Naruto said causing Kara to look at him funny. "In our kind of lives, love and relationships isn't easy but definitely worth it. They're what remind us why we're fighting so don't wait for James to make the first move."
"What? Naruto—there's—there's nothing going on with me and James." Kara rambled.
"Uh huh. But take it from me and don't wait. It won't be easy but worth it. If James can't see that then he's an idiot." Naruto promised, giving her one last hug and kiss on the cheek. "See you soon, Supergirl."
"Catch you later, Impulse." Kara replied as Naruto gave her a wink before super speeding away and through the city. While he was running, he put his suit back on and raced outside the city limits before he raced around in a circle and opened up another breach before racing into it. He was gone but National City would see Impulse again.
And the funny thing about his advice to Kara was that it was good advice she would follow but James wouldn't be the man she would use it on. If Naruto or Kara decided to pay closer attention to the future photo Gideon showed them then they would have noticed some peculiar little things. Like a gear with a lightning bolt insignia necklace around Kara's neck, a small blue teardrop rock necklace around Naruto's neck and an incredibly beautiful engagement ring and wedding ring on Kara's finger. Suffice to say that their future would be interesting.
End of Part 1
1). Think Iron Man's emergency gauntlet he uses in Civil War when Bucky Escapes. It takes the place of Naruto's Earth-2 smartwatch and band but when activated, it encases his entire hands and upper forearms in armor. The watch on his left hand has a computer, sensor, and dart launcher while the one on his right is just a repulsor blaster with a retractable forearm blade and data spike.
I hope you guys liked the first chapter of the companion story to the Crimson Speedster, Adventure through the Multiverse. It'll be a little break from the Crimson speedster only because it involves Naruto's travel through the multiverse on his way back to Earth-1. Now that he's fast enough to open up a breach by himself, time to head home but a speedster opening up a breach is a little different then from someone who can vibe. Obviously his first attempt didn't go so well but he did meet a new/old friend of his, Kara Danvers. She and her earth will be playing a big role in the future.
The companion story won't be that long, just individual chapters of Naruto's journey through the multiverse and each chapter will be its own earth, ideally. I may combine some earths into one chapter but those instances he won't stick around for a long time. Might be quick pop-ins to get food or rest a little but they'll be interesting. Hope you guys enjoy it.
Next chapter, Naruto's adventure through the multiverse continues as he lands on an earth in the future. Unfortunately, it's not an earth where there's advance technology, flying cars, and world peace but the world nearly destroyed itself in nuclear warfare and those that were left to pick up the pieces got the short end of the stick. Until next time.
