p class="MsoNormal"To say they had started their relationship on the wrong foot was an understatement. Since day one, Caffery's existed off obfuscation, omission, and just general sneakiness trying to keep truth and justice at a hearty distance. It has been Peter's job to shorten that distance as much as possible, especially with this new deal Caffery managed to convince him was a good idea in one bad minute./p
p class="MsoNormal" /p
p class="MsoNormal"Peter usually starts his morning out pondering what a dumb decision that was./p
p class="MsoNormal"Today is the test – can he trust Caffery?/p
p class="MsoNormal"Peter winced as the gun barrel pressed painfully into his spine. Caffery's eyes shone with concern, but his face held relaxed as he tried to silver tongue his way to Peter's release./p
p class="MsoNormal"emGod, /emhe hoped he could trust Caffery. He came all down to this, didn't it?/p
p class="MsoNormal"emGod, /emhe wished he could have kissed El one last time. The barrel of the gun moved away from his spine, and in that moment, Peter breathed a sigh of relief and, perhaps with some amazement, as Neal had done it again./p
p class="MsoNormal"And then the gun fired, and blood spackled the ground, and Neal dropped like a stone onto the pavement. That one second was all Peter needed to break free. An elbow into his captor's face, a quick twist of his wrist, and suddenly Peter was the one with the gun handcuffing the shooter./p
p class="MsoNormal"The second he was secure, Peter rushed to Neal./p
p class="MsoNormal""Neal! Hey!" He moved the young man onto his back so he could see where the wound was./p
p class="MsoNormal""Gah!" Neal gasped, "Ow." His right hand grasped at his left shoulder. Blood seeped between his fingers./p
p class="MsoNormal""Let me see." Peter put pressure on the wound, causing Neal to flinch./p
p class="MsoNormal""You'll be okay. I think it's superficial." Peter called in for back-up on his cell, Diana and Jones were finally on the way with help./p
p class="MsoNormal""Easy for you to say." Neal's head slapped against the ground, "You suck."/p
p class="MsoNormal""No one told you to take a bullet for me."/p
p class="MsoNormal"Neal's eyes met Peter's. A look. What does that mean?/p
p class="MsoNormal""No one told you to get taken hostage, but here we are." A smirk./p
p class="MsoNormal""That's different." Peter sighed./p
p class="MsoNormal"It did answer his question, this whole charade. Could he trust Caffery? When it counted./p
p class="MsoNormal"Yes./p
