Summary: What if Bella is Emmett's little sister from his human time. What happens when Rosalie saves him and after he wakes from his change, immediately tries to go get her because she's home alone? (Bella is sixteen, almost seventeen to Emmett's eighteen.) What happens when Bella and Edward meet in the 1930's instead of 2009?
AN: I have tried to set this story in the late 1930's, but as I wasn't alive during that time and no longer know anyone that was, I based my story off of generic research. It will probably come across as sounding like times are even older when I reference chaperones and general stores. Thank you in advance for reading. I haven't published in a long time and I want to also add that all mistakes are mine. I tried to self proofread and I will admit that I don't catch everything.
I stood in the kitchen watching my sister Bella sew the final touches on my new cap. Wearing a small animal skin like a skunk or a raccoon helped keep the bugs away while I was in the woods. I was in the woods a lot to provide for me and her. Our parents died last year on a trip to visit some relatives across the state. Bella is two years younger than me and she's all I have left in this life. We're close and I will do anything for her. I have a job so that I can pay for the things she needs to take care of the house. She tends a garden and makes do the best she can with what I give her, and it isn't much. She cooks, cleans, and does the laundry. I do the shopping, chopping wood and hunting.
As soon as she finished a minute later, she smiled at me and held it up.
"What do you think?" She asked.
"It looks great. Thanks for making this for me." I said and plopped the hat on my head.
"Are you going on a trip?" She asked and got up to make some food for us.
"Yeah, I'm going to leave in the morning. It'll probably be a couple of days. Do you have everything you need for a few days?" I asked. It was still early enough that I could go to town to get her what she needs. She checked our meager pantry.
"I could use more flour, cornmeal, oats, salt, and sugar. I'll get milk from the cow and eggs from the chickens." She said. I nodded.
"I'll take care of it. Do you need fabric or thread?" I offered.
"I don't need it yet, but if you're buying, I'll take it. I was going to ask in another month anyway so I can make your winter clothes." She said.
"You take good care of me. Thank you. If I was a proper big brother, I would be bringing you to town to find a husband." I said, filled with remorse.
"You take good care of me too. I'm glad you're not a proper big brother. I'm not ready for a husband anyway. We only just put away our mourning clothes." She said. I stood and pulled her into my arms. I kissed the top of her head.
"I'm going to head into town first and when I get back, I'll chop wood for you." I said. She nodded.
"Ok, thank you Emmett." She said and cleaned up her sewing. She followed me outside, but turned to head into her garden. She got her watering can and filled it at the well. I reminded her to keep the shot gun close and she nodded. I hated leaving her all alone, but she says she doesn't like going to town. I'm not in the mood to make her.
I rolled into the town with my horse and wagon. I found a place to hook up the horse so I could do the errands for Bella. I got the things she needed. I picked out some fabric for both of us and then I decided to give her a blank book and some pencils if she wanted to draw. I also found a new book for her. Luckily, our mother had taught her how to read a little for cooking. Bella found that she enjoys reading and when I can, I try to spoil her. Plus, she reads to me at night after we're done with our chores. I enjoy some of the stories and I'm glad she has books other than the bible to read from.
After spending a little more money than I was used to, I was finally headed home. Bella was lighting the fire to make dinner. She smiled at me and waited until I had her supplies unloaded. I took her hand and led her inside. I showed her what I had purchased for her.
"Oh, Emmett, it's like Christmas. Thank you for the extra treats. This fabric will make a lot of clothes for us. Thank you so much!" She said and hugged me. I chuckled. I watched her move to put her treasures away and went out to chop wood as I promised her I would.
That evening, Bella treated me to beef stew. She always makes sure that I have a hearty meal before one of my hunting trips. After she cleans up dinner, she'll make me a sack of food to take with me. That way, I can leave in the morning and not disturb her. It's also her signal that I've left and she doesn't need to worry about me. She packed a sack that should last for three days if I ration it. Rationing food is difficult for me, but I always try. I set my own supplies near the door like a nap sack, my shot gun, extra ammunition, and my jacket. We settled in the house near the fire and Bella tried to read her new book. There were a lot of words that she was stumbling on though.
"It's ok, Bella, if you want to read it to yourself first and then read it to me when I get back." I said.
"Thank you Emmett; I'll practice while you're gone." She said and I smiled. We turned in shortly after that, which meant we went to the loft. Our house had two rooms and a loft. Bella and I slept in the loft. Neither one of us had the courage to go into our parent's bedroom. I went in once to make sure there was no money hidden because I was now the man of the house. I found a small stash and after I closed the door, it hasn't opened.
In the morning, I added a log to the fireplace to spruce up the embers and warm the space up. I grabbed my gear and left the house. I walked into woods to go hunt big game. Bella was an expert at preserving it and making it last for a few months. It took me all morning to get to a place that I can get comfortable and wait. By nightfall, I hadn't seen anything worth bringing home to Bella and ate some of my food. I lit a very small fire and went to sleep.
I was woken up sharply by something poking at my feet. I opened my eyes to see a large bear. I sat up, reaching for my shot gun, but I never got my shot off. My sudden movements startled the bear, who then attacked. The large paw sliced my chest open and it knocked the wind out of me. I cried out and the bear growled, taking another swipe. I swung my rifle and hit the bear in the head, but all I did was piss it off even more. It now came to me that the bear could smell the food Bella packed for me. I had tucked it into my nap sack while I slept to keep it safe. I knew I was about to lose this fight, but I had to be strong for Bella. She'll be wondering where I am if I'm not home by tomorrow night. We have no phone and no neighbors. I don't even know if she knows the way to town. I have to fight to get back to her. The bear swiped again and got my head. My attacks were getting weaker. I had given up, sending a mental prayer to Bella, telling her that I'm sorry and that I love her. When I opened my eyes again, the bear was gone. I looked around and saw it in another fight, with a woman? How is that possible? Sure as I'm about to die, she just killed the bear! I was gasping for breath. She looked up at me and I saw something on her face. Blood? Was she drinking from the bear? In the blink of an eye, she was in front of me, lifting me off the ground. Who was this woman and how is she so freakishly strong?
"It's going to be ok; I'm going to try to save you." She said and then one side of my body was getting blasted by wind.
"Bella, don't let me forget Bella. She needs me to protect her." The woman slowed down.
"Is she your wife?"
"No, my…. She's… She'll…worry. I'm…all…she…has." I was panting at this point.
"I'll do the best I can. I need to save you first." She said and was running again. I don't know how long the wind blasted me when she finally stopped.
"Rosalie, what the hell did you do?" Someone asked and he was angry.
"He was losing against the bear. He can't die. Please Carlisle. Change him for me. I'm begging you." She begged. I didn't even have the strength to hold my head up or my eyes open.
"If it will help you ease your pain, I will change him for you." A new male voice said. Suddenly, the pain the bear caused was nothing. It felt like I was on fire. I screamed.
"I know it hurts, but when it's over, you'll feel much better." The girl, I guess, Rosalie said. Bella, where is Bella? I can't lose her! This hurts, she'll know what to do.
"He's thinking of some girl named Bella." The angry voice said. How the hell did he know?
"She's not his wife, I asked him before I brought him all the way here." Hell the burn is spreading. It's not getting better. My chest feels like it exploded off my body.
"I can't take this, he's going to scream the whole time." The angry voice said and left the room, slamming the door behind him. Someone, please make the pain stop.
